‎Photo album of a British Businessman's life in Ceylon with 3 Hong Kong Silvertone photos‎

‎1920. Hardcover. Very good overall. An interesting photograph album of about 88 photographs compiled by an unknown British businessman who visits Hong Kong Colombo & wider Ceylon. He visits Hong Kong as a bachelor and here there are several amusing snapshots of men in kimonos some parading with parasols. Arriving in Ceylon the businessman seems to have been involved with either rubber or coconut plantations. He appears to marry in Ceylon. There are also 13 vernacular shots of Colombo buildings and people including a lovely Sri Lankan woman and a Chinese street seller. There is a charming image of a young coolie asleep on the bottom rung of his rickshaw. A group of 4 photos show a large white ship from various angles includes one of the captain looking at native boats alongside by photographer Karl Lewis possibly related to the Great White Fleet. Then a group of personal family portraits and one of the Forth Bridge in Scotland.<br /> <br /> Lewis was an interesting photographer of the last century. Born in Kentucky in 1865 he started as a dock worker and eventually took to the sea living all over the world. He settled in Yokohama in 1901 had a common law wife and ran small photographic printing business issuing brochures postcards and covers that were sometimes hand colored. In 1905 his catalog advertised "take any photograph sketch or draw produce 100 elegantly colored postcards for $1.75 including shipping." Over the years he found sailors and the American Navy a popular subject possibly because of sales. His postcards & photographs have become very collectible. See great white fleet website.<br /> <br /> Photograph sizes vary 3 ¾ x 4 ¾"; c x 2 ¾"; 6 x 4 ¼";3 ¼ x 4 ¼"; 4 x 5 ¾"; 6 3/8 x 4 ¾". Most images are vernacular some have numbers/letters in the image but no identified photographer other than the Lewis images mentioned above. <br /> <br /> Thick oblong photograph album 11 ¾ x 9 ½ x 2 ½". Green two-tone cloth covers with thick album board varying between brown gray and dark green backing the photographs. Boards a bit speckled corners rubbed and a bit marked but firmly bound. <br /> <br /> An interesting vernacular album of Sri Lanka and the course of this man's life. hardcover‎

‎Purcell 1900. Unmounted gelatin silver prints and one mounted boudoir card most images measuring 8 x 5 and 7 x 4 ½ inches. Varying levels of fading else about fine. With gallery stamps of Fenn Gallery Santa Fe verso. Near Fine. In the years following the Land Run of 1889 which opened land in Indian Territory to Euro-American settlement professional and amateur photographers alike moved to the region. Their motives varied with some attempting to document the vanishing indigenous culture and others trying to capitalize on the Euro-American demand for photographs of Native Americans in both traditional and western attire. Some studios would use single sets of props for different tribes. Despite these issues the images from the period do illuminate the period of acculturation and displacement in the history of the Southern Plains Indians tribes and also provide a record of the motives of the Euro-American photographers behind the camera. <br /> <br /> William J. Lenny and William L. Sawyers were photographers working out of Purcell in the years immediately following the land rush. They photographed the tribes on the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache and Wichita-Caddo reservations. Lenny was a field photographer and likely took most of the photographs while Sawyer managed the studio. Offered here are a very extensive group of photographs taken by the duo - twenty-seven in total - giving a visual record of the Kiowa and other tribes during this period. Some of these images - though not these copies - were included in the Museum of the Great Plains Exhibition In Citizen’s Garb and we have included their reference numbers where applicable. <br /> <br /> Overall an uncommonly large group in fine condition with some fading. From the collection of Forest Fenn the noted Santa Fe gallerist. <br /> <br /> 1. Indian Police / Kiowa and Comanches Supplied Title. The images shows seven mounted police officers with the one furthest to the left appearing to be Euro-American. <br /> <br /> 2. Arko Captain of the Indian Police Comanche. Supplied Title Indian police commonly earned $8-$10 per month to work on the reservation where their duties included expelling intruders bringing children to the schools curbing crime and preventing the sale of alcohol. ‎1885. Very good overall. Large albumen photographs of the Grange station north of Hamilton which was first settled in 1838. The Wedge brothers established the Grange in what is now called Old Strathkellar on Mill Road. It was the first pastoral holding established in the area with a long history as a pastoral property and of note for its fine gardens.<br /> <br /> The imposing images include "The Grange" a photograph of the two story homestead with a man and woman seated on the ground floor veranda a sweeping drive in front and tall trees; "The Drive Grange" an image of the curved drive flanked by mature trees; "Stables the Grange" showing a large two story stable with horse & rider and carriage in front and a flock of sheep; "Pampas Grass the Grange" depicting a woman and man flanking the very tall grass; "The Blue Gum Avenue the Grange" showing a lovely avenue of tall gums; and "View on the Grange estate" a landscape view taken across an open field with rows of trees in the far distance.<br /> <br /> The photographs taken by an unidentified photographer; each titled in period ink at the lower right. 9 1/2 x 7 1/4" unknown‎

Photograph of the famed New York mansion which became George Washington's headquarters in Manhattan in the fall of 1776 and from which he won his first victory of the war the Battle of Harlem Heights. <br /> <br /> Accompanied by a lithographic portrait of the wife of the second owner of the house the shrewd socialite and real estate owner Eliza Jumel 1775 - 1865 who later married Aaron Burr. This connection to Alexander Hamilton led Lin-Manuel Miranda the composer of the Broadway musical 'Hamilton' to find inspiration in Aaron Burr's bedroom at the mansion writing some of the music there.<br /> <br /> Eliza and her wealthy wine merchant first husband Stephen Jumel purchased the Morris mansion in 1810. After Jumel died Madam Jumel married the 77 year old former Vice President Aaron Burr who famously killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel at Weehawken NJ. The Jumel-Burr marriage lasted a very short time with Madam Jumel filing for divorce on the grounds that Burr was after her money and hiring Alexander Hamilton's son as her divorce attorney!<br /> <br /> The lithographic portrait is titled "Madam Jumel" oval measuring 6 x 8" on thick paper 9 1/2 x 12". ca. 1860 The albumen photograph of the mansion titled in white at the bottom edge of the photo "80.
