Fifield Jr. The "Apostle To Millionaires" Created An Organization He Called "Spiritual Mobilization" Which Appears To Have Become With His Full Cooperation Something Of A Tool Of Industry To Promote Via Nationwide Pulpits The Idea That America Was Going To Hell In A Pagan Handbag And That Only Prayer And Unfettered Capitalism Could Save It-A Movement Which Gained Traction During The Ensuing Communist Witchhunts. Before He Was Overshadowed By The Much Cleverer And Less Condescending Billy Graham And Thus Had To Be Satisfied With A More Provincial Influence From His Perch At The First Congregational Church-To The Head Of Which He'd Been Drafted From Grand Rapids In 1935-And On The Radio Well Into An Era That Had Passed Him By Fifield Bought The First Of His Palazzos A Half-Timbered 1928 House At 111 North June Street." As Though It Was A Seaside Country Estate The June Street House Was Given The Name "Copper Harbor" And Would Be Featured In The Times's Rotogravure On February 19 1950. After A Few Years In An Apartment At The Chateau Elysee On Franklin Avenue Now Interestingly Scientology's "Celebrity Centre" The Fifields Moved To Another Copper Harbor The Name Traveling With The Family. Not One To Let The Catholic Church Upstage Him-That Faith's Archbishop Lived In Conspicuous Luxury At 100 Fremont Place-Fifield Bought #55 In 1956. The Name Copper Harbor-And Apparently The Real Family Funds And Perhaps Much Of The Taste For Grandeur-Originated With Mrs. Fifield's Family; Her Father Had Developed Mines Back In Copper Harbor Michigan At The Extreme Northerly Point Of That State. After Helen Fifield A Collector Of Children'S Books Died On November 15 1957 The Reverend Even Before Disposing Of #55 Bought Another House In The Neighborhood 118 Fremont Place. There He Maintained The Splendor Even If His Career Had Long Since Been Eclipsed. 118 Also Became An Office To Which Readers Of The Los Angeles Times Were Encouraged To Write For A Tract Produced By Dr. Fifield And His Daughter Mary Entitled "Does God Care" <br/> <br/> Whitman Publishing Company hardcover

The Book Opens With The Description Of An Amal Sniper Attack On A Young Boy. Cutting Wrote; "I Was Appalled By The Brutality Of Amal." By Mid-January 1987 The Camp Starving Some Feared A Repeat Of The 1976 Tel Al-Zaatar Massacre - When An East Beirut Palestinian Refugee Camp Had Been Surrounded By The Phalangists - Aided By The Syrians. The Book Is Also An Account Of Her Meeting The Dutch Doctor Ben Alofs And Of Their Growing Closeness - Signalled By Alofs Bringing Her A Copy Of Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell To Arms - The Story Of A Romance With A British Nurse. Though She Arrived For Humanitarian Reasons By The Summer Of 1986 She Says She Had Developed A Strong Sympathy For The Palestinian Cause. St. Louis: Published from 116 North Fourth Street 1877. First Edition. Hardcover. Front cover now detached and the spine largely lacking but the text block is tight and the book can be easily rebacked. Despite the defects Very Good and quite scarce. The first twelve issues of this scarce western photography monthly edited by J. H. Fitzgibbon one of America's finest daguerreotypists and well-known for his portraits of Native Americans. Bound in contemporary half morocco with the original front and rear wrappers for all issues as well as the ads bound in. Illustrated with 10 original photographs mostly mounted albumens including a portrait of Fitzgibbon by Bogardus an Adirondacks landscape by Stoddard and various posed studies. One image the Great Steel Bridge of St. Louis is printed directly on the paper; another is a chromotype of the Chicago Apollo Musical Club by Gentile. There is no image with the sixth issue nor is one listed in the contents. The albertype by E. Bierstadt for the eleventh issue is lacking as is a ferrotype specimen holder in one of the ads. The articles are informative and instructional covering both news and many different technical aspects of photography at the time with much longing for a return to the daguerreotype and a number of articles on new processes such as the Lambertype. This copy is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the editor to T. S. Lambert in January of 1878 on the inside front cover. Theodore Sarony T. S. Lambert was no relation to the creator of the Lambertype Claude Lambert but he did team up with Claude to sell exclusive license for the Lambertype process. <br/><br/> Published from 116 North Fourth Street hardcover

Shanghai: Commercial Press Limited 1912. Original publisher's orange-brown pictorial cloth marbled endpapers. Oblong 8vo 15 x 22.5 cm. 160 black-and-white photographic illustrations all protected by tissue paper guards. First and only edition of a very rare work with photographic illustrations of the Chinese Revolution of 1911 with captions in Chinese and English. It was published specifically for circulation in the West and consists of 14 parts. The present work contains the first 4. However any volume in this series is exceptionally rare as we have not been able to find another copy in sales records of the past 100 years.The Chinese Revolution of 1911 is an important event in Chinese history as it resulted in the establishment of the Republic of China. The Revolution was preceded by decade of revolts since Chinese citizens had already been dissatisfied with the rule of the Qing dynasty 1636-1912 for some time. The Revolution started in October 1911 with the Wuchang Uprising after which similar revolts broke out across the country. The Qing court then initiated negotiations with the revolutionaries. Both parties came to the agreement that the emperor who was just 6-years old had to abdicate in February 1912. Revolutionary statesman Sun Yat-Sen 1866-1925 became the first provisional president.The present work offers an authentic pictorial record of the first revolts. The work contains numerous portraits of important leaders of the Revolution and members of the Qing court grim photographic illustrations of the battlefields in Wuchang now the Wuchang District of Wuhan and Hankow or Hankou and images of the attack on Nanking now Nanjing including the preparations and the aftermath.The binding shows very slight signs of wear the gutters of the front and back endpapers are weakened causing the binding to be wobbly but the boards are still attached. Collection of 13 photographs of the Alhambra in Granada.
Granada 1865. All albumen photographic prints 18 x 24 cm are mounted on black card stock 29.5 x 21 cm. Collection of 19th-century albumen photographic prints of the Alhambra in Spain by Charles Mauzaisse ca. 1823-1885; fl. 1860s. The beautiful images show many different parts of the Alhambra especially of the court and palace of lions including the central fountain and the pavillion with the oriental dome that was added in 1859 and later removed. The Alhambra is a medieval palace and fort of Moorish or Muslim rulers of the Kingdom of Granada in Andalusia in the South of the Iberian Peninsula. Additionally the collection contains one photograph of the tomb of the Catholic monarchs which is located in the Royal Chapel of Granada.During the 19th century tourism was booming. Travellers wanted to take proof of their travels home and often did so in the form of photographs. Many photographers took the opportunity to sell their work to tourists. Charles Mauzaisse son of the painter Jean Baptiste Mauzaisse traveled to the south of Spain and fell in love with Granada where he would develop his professional activity alongside other renowned photographers such as Laurent Coutourier and Dubois. All of them - aware of the lucrative field of work that the image of the Alhambra offered - settled more or less definitively in the city just as Masson or Count Vigier did in Seville or Clifford and Laurent in Madrid.The prints are slightly yellowed and some images were possibly overexposed or have faded slightly all prints show clear signs of having previously been mounted on another surface. Some prints have small tears in the edges. The print of the 2 Moroccan women in the Alhambra is probably by a different photographer but the name has been cut off. The collection gives a beautiful insight into 19th-century photography in the Iberian Peninsula - showing off the beautiful Arabic- and Muslim-influences architecture in Granada. unknown

Remarkable collection of 34 stunning photographic prints of Egypt all numbered titled and signed in the negative by photographer Jean Pascal Sébah 1872-1947 who owned the leading studio for Orientalist photography. He was even named the official photographer of the Sultan of Turkey together with his business partner Polycarpe Joailllier 1848-1904. The majority of the images in the present collection show streets and buildings from lesser known Egyptian cities and scenes of daily life. Larger collections of Sébah's work are relatively rare on the market.Sébah continued the business of his father Pascal Sébah 1823-1886 one of the first photographers working in Egypt. Pascal rose to prominence because of his well-organized compositions careful lighting and quality of his prints. The majority of his photographs are of tourist destinations and locals. Jean Pascal inherited his father's good eye but was more interested in depicting lesser known locations. His photos of people also appear more spontaneous. The present collection includes photographs of El-Souroughieh street and the Khalig canal in Cairo the Virgin Mary's tree in Matariya a local with a buffalo a group of seated men in a mosque a sugarcane market locals working on a sugarcane field a group of boys fishing and the hustle and bustle along the Nile.With a small purple ownership stamp of an anchor in mirror image and the letters "S A" near the top edge of one of the photographs of the Nile. The cardstock is very slightly foxed and yellowed and has somewhat warped from past temperature fluctuations.
