Karel Fonteyne has built up an extensive oeuvre during a career spanning more than 50 years in art and fashion photography. In the late 1960s and 1970s he was a pioneer in the world of art photography. For more than 15 years, Fonteyne was internationally active within the fashion scene, both in Antwerp with early collaborations with Margiela, Dries Van Noten, Walter Van Beirendonck and Dirk Bikkembergs, as well as internationally, with commissions for prestigious magazines such as Vogue, Interview, Bazaar, Marie-Claire or Brutus Magazine in Japan. In 1996 he decided to quit fashion photography and focus exclusively on his work as a contemporary artist. For the group exhibition in the Handelsbeurs, a selection was made of some of his iconic fashion series for Vogue France and one image was realized for Giorgio Armani. Karel Fonteyne's narrative images transcend classical photography in which the artist creates a timeless, sometimes alienating and esoteric atmosphere. His work evokes paradoxical feelings and confronts us with cosmic and mystical elements, our internal world linked to forms of loneliness or isolation, often offset by a perfume of humor or surrealism.‎

‎?Signs of Life? is een fotografische zoektocht naar de kern van ons bestaan. Wie zijn we, waar komen we vandaan en waar gaan we heen? Reizend tussen verleden en heden probeert kunstfotograaf Eddy Van Gestel een antwoord te vinden op de vraag of de evolutie die de mens heeft doorgemaakt al dan niet een succesverhaal is. Met signs of Life houdt hij ons mensen een spiegel voor en dwingt hij met zachte hand om naar onszelf te kijken. De vier hoofdstukken ?Perpetuum?, ?Curves and colours?, ?A deal with god? en ?Just Imagine, die ogenschijnlijk los staan van mekaar, blijken bij nader inzien onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden. Door ze fotografisch met mekaar te verbinden, maakt hij duidelijk dat niets en niemand een eiland is. Want dat is juist het punt dat hij wil maken: we kunnen ons als mens niet los zien van onze omgeving, van mekaar en al evenmin van al het andere leven op deze planeet. De intensiteit en de kwetsbaarheid van zijn werken maakt duidelijk dat onze soort dan wel een uniek bewustzijn en gevoel voor esthetiek heeft ontwikkeld, maar tegelijk ook gebukt gaat onder de onzekerheid van het leven in het algemeen en onder de vergankelijkheid van het bestaan in het bijzonder. Of hoe we als woekerende, superieure soort het almaar moeilijker lijken te hebben om in harmonie te leven met onszelf, met de ander en met deze planeet die ons heeft voortgebracht. Met ?Signs of Life? cre ert Eddy Van Gestel een parallel universum, dat op zichzelf staat, ongrijpbaar en bij wijlen surrealistisch, maar nooit vrijblijvend. 'Signs of Life' is a photographic search for the core of our existence. Who are we, where did we come from and where are we going? Travelling between past and present, art photographer Eddy Van Gestel tries to find an answer to the question of whether or not the evolution that humans have gone through is a success story. With Signs of Life, he holds up a mirror to us humans and gently forces us to look at ourselves. The four chapters 'Perpetuum', 'Curves and colours', 'A deal with god' and 'Just Imagine,' which are seemingly unconnected, turn out on closer inspection to be inextricably linked. By linking them photographically, he makes it clear that nothing and no one is an island. Because that is precisely the point he wants to make: as humans, we cannot separate ourselves from our surroundings, from each other or from all other life on this planet. The intensity and fragility of his works makes it clear that our species may have developed a unique awareness and sense of aesthetics, but at the same time it is also weighed down by the uncertainty of life in general and the transience of existence in particular.
