Braeckman is interested in photographs with imperfections, in empty interiors, everyday objects, evocative places or objects that leave much to the imagination. He has chosen from the FOMU collection functional photographs, made without artistic ambition. He recognised certain qualities and commonalities with his own work in these atypical images. Rephotography and experimentation have always formed part of Braeckman?s artistic practice, though the trajectory to the final image is always different. For the FOMU exhibition, he worked for the first time with an existing collection of photos. Braeckman took photos of the chosen images and printed them. He then over-painted, smeared or cut holes in the prints. He photographed the results and processed them further in his analogue and digital darkroom. The original meaning of the photographs has been altered through the removal of context, the change in format and the addition of titles. A functional document is transformed into a piece of art, a timeless visual poem that raises more questions than it answers. ?Echtzeit? refers to Braeckman?s bridging of the past and present. Simultaneously and in real-time, three perspectives: of the original photographer, of Braeckman and of us, the viewers come together. The Kaiserpanorama is again part of the collection exhbition this year: a highlight of the FOMU Collection, on display again after undergoing a complete restoration. The device was a modern piece of automated machinery when it was made in 1905 and presented a 3D photographic spectacle to the public. ‎Confrontatie met de nucleaire impact op The Polygon in Kazachstan Het nieuwe fotografische project van Eddo Hartmann richt zich op een van de eerste ?sacrifice zones?, in de laatmoderne tijd door regeringen bedacht voor de geheime productie, tests en onderhoud van allerlei soorten nucleaire en chemische wapens. De bewoners van deze locaties werden als proefkonijnen onbewust onderdeel van het hele experiment. Vandaag zijn deze gebieden voorbeelden geworden van ecocide: de onomkeerbare vernietiging van de natuur op grote schaal. Een afgelegen gebied in Kazachstan was ooit de thuisbasis van de belangrijkste nucleaire testfaciliteiten van de Sovjet-Unie. Het werd bekend als ?The Polygon?. Op deze locatie vonden van 1949 tot 1989 meer dan 450 kernproeven plaats zonder rekening te houden met het effect ervan op de lokale bevolking en het milieu. De volledige impact van de straling werd pas duidelijk nadat de testlocatie begin jaren negentig werd gesloten. Verlatenheid en verval tekenen deze hoek van de Kazachse steppe. ‎Dit boek beschrijft de carri re van de Belgische fotograaf John Vink, die in 1985 begon bij Lib ration. Zijn persoonlijke project Water in de Sahel won in 1986 de Eugene Smith-prijs en benadrukte zijn toewijding om de menselijke ervaring in moeilijke omstandigheden vast te leggen. Als medeoprichter van Agence VU documenteerde Vink wereldwijd vluchtelingenkampen. Dat liet hem toe om in 1997 volwaardig lid te worden bij Magnum Photos, wat hij zou blijven tot en met 2017. Zijn serie Peuples d?En Haut toont de veerkrachten culturele identiteit van berggemeenschappen, zoals de Mam in Guatemala en de Hmong in Laos. Na jaren van reizen vestigde Vink zich in 2000 in Cambodja, wat hem in staat stelde om zich dieper in een cultuur te verdiepen. Nu hij in Brussel woont, blijft hij inspireren met zijn krachtige visuele verhalen die thema?s zoals identiteit en menselijkheid onderzoeken. Met een tekstbijdrage van Rik Van Puymbroeck.
