Charif Benhelima Semites, the Album + artist book
Set of 2 hardback Volumes, 255x205mm, 176p, 180 colour illustrations. ISBN 9789490693305. Charif Benhelima (1967, Brussel) is een kunstenaar met Belgische, Sefardische en Arabische roots. Zijn hele oeuvre is een fotografisch onderzoek naar identiteit en naar het gevoel een buitenstaander te zijn. Naast het onderwerp is ook de reflectie over het medium een belangrijk gegeven in de artistieke praktijk van de kunstenaar. Voor de reeks 'Semites' (2005) koos Charif Benhelima de polaroidcamera als werkinstrument. De polaroid levert een 1-op-1-beeld af: het moment kristalliseert zich zonder omwegen in een foto. Deze foto is meteen het eindresultaat. 'Semites' omvat 135 polaroidfoto's van bestaande afbeeldingen (m.a.w. reproducties via de polaroidcamera), waarin de flits van de polaroidcamera duidelijk zichtbaar is. De reflectie van dit licht schijnt over het oorspronkelijke beeld en wordt zichtbaar op het uiteindelijke resultaat, het polaroidbeeld. 'In New York werd ik tot mijn verbazing geconfronteerd met het feit dat mijn naam, Benhelima, van Joodse afkomst is en dat heeft het werk "Semites" beinvloed. Met de Polaroid 600 als hulpmiddel en door het in vraag stellen van de begrippen identiteit en werkelijkheid ontwikkelde ik wat ikzelf een fake documentary work noem. Door op een paneel afbeeldingen van Joodse, Arabische, Sefardisch Joodse portretten en portretten van mezelf door elkaar te hangen creeer ik een persoonlijk document, een collage van afbeeldingen van strijdige identiteiten die tegenstrijdig verwarrend zijn. Om nog meer desorientatie te creeren heb ik licht aan de portretten toegevoegd, wat in plaats van het uiterlijk van mensen te benadrukken en te belichten eerder de details van hun gezicht vervaagt. Hierdoor wordt er een verband gelegd met de vage herinneringen die we hebben aan onze kindertijd. Ook de herinneringen die ik heb aan mijn ouders zijn eerder vaag.' Exclusief voor deze tentoonstelling in Be-Part, Platform voor actuele kunst, werd de volledige reeks van 135 polaroidfoto's omgezet in cibachromeprints, die hun plaats krijgen in een imposante 'muur', a wall under construction. Charif Benhelima (?°1967, Brussels) is an artist with Belgian, Jewish-Sefardic and Arabic roots. It is only during a visit in New York that Benhelima realizes his name also implies a Jewish background. His whole oeuvre thereafter is a photographic quest in search of identity and the sense of being an outsider. For his series 'Semites' (2005), presented in a limited signed book, Charif Benhelima chose the polaroidcamera 600 as a working instrument, enabling him to question issues of identity and reality that result in what can be called a fake documentary work. 'The Semites: The Album' comprises 90 (2 x 45) polaroid pictures of already existing images: they are reproductions received via the polaroidcamera, in which the flash of the camera is clearly visible. The reflection of this light shines on top of the original image and becomes visible through over-exposure on the final result. Benhelima's polaroids deliver a one-on-one image: the moment crystallizes itself without detours in the photo. The photo instantly becomes the final result of the research. In this way, the polaroid image is even more desorienting. Details of the faces become blurry instead of sharp and well delineated. Benhelima thus creates a link with vague memories we have of our parents during the time we were children. Apart from Charif's search of identity and sense of belonging, reflection on photography is an equally important basis of the artist's artistic practice. During the exhibition in BE-Part Waregem devoted to 'Semites', Charif juxtaposed 135 images of Jewish, Arabic and Sefardic portraits and portraits of himself on a panel. Not just because of their beauty, their elegance, and their sensuality. African men may well foster the illusion that they are the kings, an illusion is after all just that an illusion. The real cornerstones of African society, carved out of hard granite, are the women. Hard labour. Having children and raising them. Making a living and raking, raking and raking some more to keep your head above water. A little stall with three bunches of bananas, pineapple cut into strips, a handful of potatoes. A coin is money too, and those who save them might perhaps be able to pay the school fees. Maybe. The master of the house looks on passively, like an additional child, a little unsteady on his feet from being out all night. Where women gather, the talk turns to men and their odd ways. Like sisters the women whisper, listen, comfort, and encourage. But still. And yet they remain women first and foremost, a feeling so strong, stronger than the issues of the day it seems. Would it be an exaggeration to say that the need to feel desirable is a universal trait? Because in spite of the struggle for life African women want to be beautiful, appeal to the other sex, be young and stay young. There's not an ounce of difference between the countryside and the city. Hairdressing is a lucrative business there. No stone is left unturned in the battle against transience. Even there. Are they after the attention of men, of whom they have very little good to say? Surely not And life went on like this, without any important accelerations. Until the advent of the internet and smartphones. The world has become a village. A cliche that became a cliche because it?s true. What remained hidden before, has now become visible. In many respects, this new outlook on the world has changed and accentuated the desires of African women at lightning speed. It turned out that what the world has to offer exceeds even a child?s wildest dreams. Suddenly the clothes they had always worn, looked like rags. Black models like Alek Wek, Ajuma Nasenyana, and ? although not African ? Naomi Campbell dazzled on the international catwalks. Showing off their beautiful bodies, gleaming like ebony, ambassadors of millions of women in the black continent, they became a source of inspiration. And so they started to dream. Of a life far away from the pots and pans in tiny huts in tiny villages. Seen through those new eyes, their old lives seemed so small, so far removed from the glamour and the flashing cameras. A new era was born. It opened the eyes of many women to the beauty of their own bodies, and encouraged them to show it. To a greater or lesser degree, but always uncomplicated. But with the dreams came ambitions. Ambitions for a life out of the shadow of men, and freedom from the dominance of background. Studies are now approached differently. They are begun for different reasons and with other goals in mind. Why would what?s possible in other corners of the world, like Europe and America, not apply to them? Why allow exploitation? You can feel that the men are beginning to brace themselves, to dig in their heels. It?s a privilege to observe how these women are shaking off their chains, how the humble, downcast eyes of yesteryear are now filled with self-confidence. A work in progress, to be sure, but this has only just started. Here we are! ?African Queen? is like a dream. A drowsy ode to African beauties, tumbling over the present to the past and back again. Surreal like all dreams. It?s about tom-toms and Vogue, top models and women en route, lugging firewood on their heads, their eyes filled with a recent past when the world still had to discover the black continent. Look at how they have prettied themselves up to have their picture taken!

The artistic side encompassed shows at the Pompidou Centre and La Maison Europeenne de la Photographie in Paris, the Whitney Museum in New York, and the publication of several books. In 1986 he was commissioned by the Musée des Arts de la Mode in Paris to photograph costumes from its collection. His signature imagery from that period included photographic fragments, paint, shards of glass and reflections. His influence then was the music of John Cage.

Er is vrijwel geen oeuvre zo eigenzinnig en merkwaardig als dat van Gerard Petrus Fieret (1924-2009). Deze markante Nederlandse fotograaf met zijn turbulente levensloop legde op obsessieve wijze alles vast wat op zijn pad kwam: mensen, dieren, straattaferelen en zichzelf ? maar vooral veel vrouwen: modellen, studenten, moeders, danseressen en serveersters, of alleen hun lichaamsdelen, zoals borsten, voeten of lange benen. Daardoor krijgen veel van zijn foto?s iets licht voyeuristisch of erotisch. Ce n?est pas une bande dessinee, mais un album avec des dessins splendides et des phrases profondes. Au debut, c?est blanc dans ma tete. Je ne pense a rien et ce rien parait blanc. Pareil a la page ou l?on a envie de dessiner. Ou semblable aux nuages les plus lents. J?ai un poids un milieu du cerveau ou les pensees ne passent pas. Premiers dessins sur fond blanc, un plan de moins en moins flou, on voit une main bandee. Seconde page, nous passons au fond noir qui continuera jusqu?a la fin de l?album. Les bandages de la tete laissent deviner des oreilles, chien ou chat ? L?etre se reveille. Il est dans une chambre d?hopital. Un policier l?interroge et lui apprend qu?il a ete victime d?un attentat et qu?il est un chien. Il va pouvoir retourner chez lui. ?« Chienne de vie, que fais-je dans cette ville ? On dirait que la haine commence ici ?». Il retourne dans un monde ou le voisin pourrait etre son ennemi, ou le chien domine et extermine le chat, tiens, ca titille du cote des reminiscences, un pays ou les reves de jour sont interdits !! Nous traversons des dessins qui pourraient faire penser, au ghetto de Varsovie, tout au moins comme je me l?imagine. L?angoisse et la peur suent, les regards sont fuyants. Chaque phrase de cet album est un coup de poing dans le plexus ou dans la memoire. Peu de texte, mais, il va droit au but, sans fioriture. Carl Norac, en phrases tres courtes, nous fait sentir le malaise de Rousseau, sa quete, son angoisse. Carl Norac et Stephane Poulin nous parlent de tolerance, du racisme, de la peur, de la quete et que ce soit les pages dessins ou les pages textes, l?emotion est toujours omnipresente et nous happe. La memoire blanche permet d?ecrire un nouveau livre de sa vie, de regarder les autres sans aucun a priori ni sectarisme. Oui, vraiment un tres, tres bel et bon album emprunt de beaucoup de poesie. Vous le relisez, une autre face apparait. Maintenant, il faut que je le rende a la bibliotheque, mais je l?aurais bien garde celui-la aussi. Je vous en recommande vivement la lecture.

Haar intuitieve werkmethode, de natuurlijke maar beladen expressie van de modellen, het licht dat de broosheid ervan nog meer lijkt te benadrukken, zijn wat haar foto?s zo ontroerend, poetisch en universeel innemend maken. Haar werk wordt vaak vergeleken met dat van de oude meesters uit de Renaissance, maar ondanks haar gebruik van het clair-obscur effect, hebben haar beelden een heel eigentijds gevoel. Ze weet de Zeitgeist te vangen met hedendaagse beelden die kalmte uitstralen en zo uitnodigen tot momenten van zelfreflectie. Is er een betere aanleiding voor een fotoboek dan een grote solotentoonstelling? Van 30 juni tot 15 oktober 2017 wordt Danielle van Zadelhoffs werk tentoongesteld in het Centro de Arte Contemporaneo in Malaga. Een luxueuze hardcover editie werd gecreeerd ter ere van deze expo, in samenwerking met Stockmans Uitgeverij. Het boek bevat 127 full colour foto?s, is gedrukt in Staccato raster om het meest gedetailleerde resultaat te bekomen, en werd in een minimal design jasje gegoten om de foto?s er nog meer te laten uitspringen. Het reproductieproces op luxepapier, het gebruik van intens zwart en de fragiliteit van de foto?s vragen om het gebruik van handschoenen die bij het boek horen. De handschoenen beschermen de foto?s en creeren tegelijkertijd een bijna rituele beleving van het werk van de kunstenares.

Zwangere wolkenpartijen boven Vlaamse hellingen, bijeengesmeten kasseien in Le Nord, de aparte sfeer van kermiskoersen en volkscafes en beklijvende portretten van de grote kampioenen.
