She was one of the first women artists to make a major part of her living through the commercial press selling satirical and comic illustrations to more than half a dozen periodicals." <br> <br>This Claxton book is subtitled Several Hundreds of Num-nums and Nicy-nicies. Claxton did mostly illustrations for periodicals - she only produced two books which are quite rare. This book is filled with her often comic illustrations. <br> <br>Is this a first edition The second author Ross has a preface dated 1875. That is the only date in the book. With a lot of searching of the internet we found an image of a different title page - the different one is in color and lacks the subtitle Several Hundreds of Num-nums and Nicy-nicies. The color title page looks like it might be from a soft cover edition but that is not clear. <br><br>The book is half leather on brown cloth. The spine has five hubs and a label. First Tauchnitz Edition Todd & Bowden's fourth setting published the same year as First American and English Editions. 165 x 123 mm. 6 1/2 x 4 7/8". xii 292; vi 280 pp. Two volumes in one. <br/> Original vellum-like paper boards covers with gilt lacy borders smooth spine heavily gilt and with gilt lettering all edges gilt. Apparently IN THE ORIGINAL maroon pebbled paper DUST JACKET. With a total of 60 photographs including frontispiece mounted on stiff paper. Clark p. 252; Todd & Bowden 515 Db. Back board with a small stain near the bottom inexpensive paper faintly browned; jacket a little dampstained splitting repaired with white tape along the joints on the inner side. Even with defects a notable survival.<br/> <br/> Attractively bound and enhanced with photographs of Italian art and architecture this is the first Tauchnitz printing of Hawthorne's "The Marble Faun" as it is called in various American printings or "The Romance of Monte Beni" as it is titled in the Tauchnitz and early London editions. The work was Hawthorne's last completed novel the principal fictive product of the author's European residence from 1853-60 and probably the most brooding Romantic and distinctive major work in the Hawthorne canon. The present edition is part of an important continental publishing phenomenon that flourished for more than a century. The descendant from a line of two previous printer-publishers Christian Bernhard Freiherr von Tauchnitz 1816-95 founded in Leipzig in 1837 the printing and publishing firm of Bernhard Tauchnitz which became famous for its inexpensive reprints of English language books. Tauchnitz began his "Collection of British Authors" in 1841 and two years later he negotiated the sole rights to publish English books in Germany; among those authors whose work he issued were Ainsworth Dickens Disraeli and Thackeray. As is obvious from the present item Tauchnitz published American authors as well. His inexpensive paperbound editions a precursor to mass-market paperbacks eventually numbered more than 4000 and the business was continued by the Tauchnitz family until being destroyed by bombing in World War II. There are often a number of different Tauchnitz editions or impressions of any particular work; in the present case the bindings differ significantly and the number of photographic plates varies widely from copy to copy. According to Clark "The absence presence or sequence of inserted photographs has no significance in determining textual priority." The presence of the original dust jacket from the 1860s--which has done so much to protect the nearly virginal white binding--represents a remarkable survival. Bernhard Tauchnitz unknown

Collection of Photographs of Cars Trucks and Specialty Vehicles from a Pasadena Rental Car Company that Catered to the Movie Industry in the 1920s
Twenty-seven 27 8†x 10†photographs showcasing high-end vehicles for rent from the Iowa Garage in Pasadana California owned by former race car mechanic Eugene Lajunie b. 1885. Each photo is accompanied by a typed caption giving the model number color some specifications and the price per day to rent with a driver. Vehicles include many touring cars and cabriolets made by Renault Packard and Daimler; a Sunbeam roadster town cars taxis a limousine army trucks a French truck mounted with an anti-aircraft gun and several remarkable “camera cars†made with front or rear-mounted platforms to hold movie cameras and their operators. Rental prices ranged from $35/day for a camera car to $75/day for the Sunbeam Roadster or a 1926 Renault cabriolet. Many of the cars are “posed†in front of beautiful homes on tree-lined Pasadena streets. These photographs would originally have been in a sales catalogue or album and there are remnants of the original pages on which they were mounted on the back of each one. Some have the original typed captions taped to the back others are accompanied by recent copies of those captions. These photographs were acquired as a group from the granddaughter of Eugene Lajunie and we believe the family made the modern captions to replace damaged ones from the original album. The images themselves are all original and in very good condition. Born in France Lajunie emigrated to the United States to work as the personal mechanic of racecar driver George Heath. Heath won first Vanderbilt Cup race with Lajunie at his side in 1904. Lajunie later lived in Davenport Iowa before moving to Pasadena and opening his Iowa Garage on South Fair Oaks avenue. There he personally repaired restored and equipped the vehicles he rented to Hollywood studios. unknown
