WINSTON MARK L
Bee Time: Lessons From The Hive
Harvard University Press Cambridge Massachusetts and London England: 2014. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. Being among bees is a full-body experience Mark Winston writesfrom the low hum of tens of thousands of insects and the pungent smell of honey and beeswax to the sight of workers flying back and forth between flowers and the hive. The experience of an apiary slows our sense of time heightens our awareness and inspires awe. Bee Time presents Winston's reflections on three decades spent studying these creatures and on the lessons they can teach about how humans might better interact with one another and the natural world. Like us honeybees represent a pinnacle of animal sociality. How they submerge individual needs into the colony collective provides a lens through which to ponder human societies. Winston explains how bees process information structure work and communicate and examines how corporate boardrooms are using bee societies as a model to improve collaboration. He investigates how bees have altered our understanding of agricultural ecosystems and how urban planners are looking to bees in designing more nature-friendly cities. The relationship between bees and people has not always been benign. Bee populations are diminishing due to human impact and we cannot afford to ignore what the demise of bees tells us about our own tenuous affiliation with nature. Toxic interactions between pesticides and bee diseases have been particularly harmful foreshadowing similar effects of pesticides on human health. There is much to learn from bees in how they respond to these challenges. In sustaining their societies bees teach us ways to sustain our own. Mark L. Winston is Academic Director of the Centre for Dialogue at Simon Fraser University and Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. "In this personal and scientific journey into the history we share with bees Winston ranges over neonicotinoid pesticides and colony collapse the control of African 'killer' bees and more. The charismatic social insects emerge as both icons of societal cohesion and symbols of nature's paradoxically mingled power and fragility."Barbara Kiser Nature "Winston writes lovingly of the rhythms and quiddities of the apiary In a highly personal style Winston steps between reportage scientific exactitude and a deep poetically expressed love of bees beekeeping and the cultural forms that bees inspire. People and bees have been working together for millenniasynergy that Winston sensitized by his work as a communications specialist clearly feels brings out the best and the worst in humanity. His take on the situation makes Bee Time an insightful delight."Adrian Barnett New Scientist "Winston wants to acquaint his readers with the fascinating complexity of the bee world and he also wants to alert readers to the fact that the bee world is drastically endangered. He brings to this hybrid task a very smooth ability to simplify the complex bee-literature he's obviously mastered providing engaging glimpses into the world of the hiveand usually presenting them in parallel context of the human world Considering the enormous ripple-effects that would happen in the wake of the disappearance of these key pollinators Winston's wake-up call takes on an urgency that's belied by its friendly approachable tone. That clarion call makes Bee Time an important book even if you by chance suffer from a touch of apiphobia."Steve Donoghue Open Letters Monthly "Winston presents a stark picture of how much we expect from and rely on bees."Kristin Treen Literary Review "Thoughtful and eloquent Winston is an inspired cross-pollinator who uses the 'full-body experience' of being with bees to draw lessons for human hives."Sarah Murdoch The Toronto Star "Winston's lyricism inspires awe of these necessary insects."Temma Ehrenfeld The Weekly Standard "A recap of what's been going on in beekeeping over the past 10 years or so Winston has left no hive unturned in this work documenting all the good and the bad that has occurred There are indeed lessons to learn from a bee hive. This work will share some of them with you."Kim Flottum Bee Culture "Winston combines beekeeping work/research philosophical musings and his personal memories in this enjoyable book."J. M. Gonzalez Choice "No other book celebrates the long relationship between humans and honeybees as powerfully thoughtfully and enchantingly as this one. Written in lyrical prose Bee Time is a delightful and inspiring read."Thomas D. Seeley author of Honeybee Democracy "Bee Time is a unique book: in turn a touching memoir a warm paean to the honey bees that have fueled Winston's impressive scientific career and an insightful analysis of some of the serious environmental problems facing us today."Gene E. GOODYEAR III FRANK H
A President In Yellowstone: The F. Jay Haynes Photographic Album Of Chester Arthur's 1883 Expedition
University of Oklahoma Press Norman: . Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. On the morning of July 30 1883 President Chester A. Arthur embarked on a trip of historic proportions. His destination was Yellowstone National Park established by an act of Congress only eleven years earlier. No sitting president had ever traveled this far west. Arthur's host and primary guide would be Philip H. Sheridan the famed Union general. Also slated to join the expedition was a young photographer Frank Jay Haynes. This elegantand fascinatingbook showcases Haynes's remarkable photographic album from their six-week journey. A premier nineteenth-century landscape photographer F. Jay Haynes as he was known professionally originally compiled the leather-bound album as a commemorative piece. As only six copies are known to exist it has rarely been seen. The album's 104 images are accompanied by captions written by General Sheridan's brother Colonel Michael V. Sheridan who wrote daily dispatches that were distributed by the Associated Press. In his informative introduction historian Frank H. Goodyear III provides background about the excursion and explains the historic and aesthetic significance of Haynes's photographs. He then re-creates Arthur's journey by reintroducing Haynes's stunning imagesalong with Sheridan's original captionsincluding views of the Tetons and other landmarks; portraits of President Arthur General Sheridan and fellow travelers engaged in activities along the route; and images of the Shoshone and Arapaho leaders who gathered to greet the visiting party. Published on the occasion of the reopening of the Haynes Photography Shop in Yellowstone A President in Yellowstone offers a unique entry into the park's storied past. SOUTH AFRICA: PHOTOGRAPHY
The Progress of his Royal Highness Prince Alfred Ernest Albert through the Cape Colony British Kaffraria the Orange Free State and Port Natal in the year 1860
Cape Town: Saul Solomon 1861. Quarto. xii 180 pp. plus photographically illustrated titlepage and sixteen mounted albumen photographs. Modern three-quarter calf and marbled boards spine gilt with leather label. Light scattered foxing occasional faint offsetting from images. Photographs generally clean. Very good. With some of the earliest photographic images from South Africa with a striking portrait of a Basuto Chief. An early photographically illustrated book and the first such book printed on the African continent. The volume was made to commemorate the visit of Alfred Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha one of Queen Victoria's sons. The book was designed to showcase the colony which had hitherto been viewed in a less than positive light by the general British public. Prince Alfred was well-received by the colonists in South Africa and the volume contains many positive facts about the colony's usefulness to the British Empire. The book includes seventeen images by photographer Joseph Kirkman who was active in South Africa from 1859 to 1870. Some of the images in this volume are photographs of drawings or other artwork but others do capture live scenes along the Prince's route including a grand portrait of the African chief Moshesh and his advisors. The chief is pictured seated in the center of the image dressed in a top hat and suit holding a cane. The man seated next to him glowers at the camera and is draped in an animal pelt and holds a spear. Four men all in Western dress stand arrayed behind them. The images taken from life during the Prince's progress are as follows: Untitled image on the titlepage showing several men next to a rail car full of large rocks. In 1860 Kirkman and Frederick York were employed by the Government and the Harbour Board to photograph the tilting of the first truck of stone off the Breakwater by Prince Alfred. This is presumably an image from that scene. Graham's Town from the West The Reception of the Prince by a Burgher Escort near Queenstown The Prince's Interview with the Tambookies Moshesh and His Counsellors The Prince and His First Wildebeeste The Prince's Travelling Equipage A rare and interesting work and notable for being the first photographically illustrated book produced in Africa. KAPLAN DAILE; HINE LEWIS WICKES
Lewis Hine In Europe: The Lost Photographs
Abbeville Press New York. Hardcover no dustjacket. Good condition. There are two gift inscriptions on the title page. Only within the last two decades has Lewis Wickes Hine been acknowledged as one of America's principal twentieth-century photographers. Best known for his moving portraits of immigrants on Ellis Island of child laborers in factories and mines and of steel workers balanced on high girders of the Empire State Building Hine was far ahead of his time in using the camera to document social conditions in America. As this ground-breaking study demonstrates Hine was also one of the very first photojournalists. In World War I Hine became a photographer for the Red Cross assigned to record the devastation in Europe and to document the need for relief work. In the spring and summer of 1918 he photographed war refugees and hospitalized soldiers in France as well as glimpses of a prewar Paris and in November he toured war-torn Italy Greece and Serbia. Hine returned to Paris and then set out again to document the suffering in formerly German-occupied areas of Belgium and northern France. Some of these pictures appeared in Red Cross publications but most of them went into that organization's archives never to be seen again for sixty years. At the end of world War II the Red Cross deposited its photograph collection--some 50000 pictures--in the Library of Congress where Hine's work was effectively "lost" due to an eccentric filing code that baffled historians for nearly forty years. Author Daile Kaplan finally was able to break the code identify Hine's photographs and reintroduce to the world the best of this master's "lost" photographs--an event that not only brings to light a completely new body of Hine's work but gives him his due at last as a true pioneer of photojournalism. 240 pages 10-1/4" x 9-1/8". DALLAS SANDRA; ATCHISON KENDAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Colorado Ghost Towns And Mining Camps
University of Oklahoma Norman: 1988. Prospectors lured to the West in hopes of striking rich settled a thousand towns in the Colorado mountains. The cry of "Gold!" or "Silver!" or a few flecks of color in a tin cup sent them to remote often inhospitable locations to search for the precious metals. Close on the heels of the miners were the merchant the gamblers the prostitutes the washerwomen the capitalists and the con men. Together they turned the mining camps into bustling towns where saloons never closed and the safest place for a man to walk after dark was down the middle of the street with a gun in each hand. Colorado Ghost Towns and Mining Camps is the first new book in more than twenty-five years to document these mountain communities. Most of the early settlers are gone leaving few persons with any oral tradition to pass on to future generations. For many of the 147 towns and camps listed in this book not much remains to be preserved beyond what Dallas and photographer Kendal Atchison have recorded. The book is lavishly illustrated with 290 photographs. In addition to those by Atchison and early historical photographs rare photographs from the 1920s and 1930s are included many never published before. Some of Atchison's superb photographs evoke nostalgia with views of abandoned buildings deteriorating amid meadow wildflowers. Soon nothing will remain but the Colorado landscape with the eternal mountains towering close by. The town histories are traced from their beginning in strike-it-rich excitement and glittering boom years through the declines to the present day. Some of these hopeful towns such as Lulu were deserted as quickly as they were settled lasting barely more than a season while a few including Aspen and Breckenridge are as lively today as they were a century ago. But most of them like Animas Forks flourished until the gold or silver played out and were abandoned leaving a few lonely cabins or picturesque ruins. Towns such as Aspen Crested Butte Cripple Creek and Breckenridge have lived on to become popular ski resorts and these places warrant additional vignettes that add color and to the text. Written to inform and entertain the general reader this book will be a delight for armchair adventurers as well as invaluable for vacationers interested in visiting the sites of these Colorado boomtowns. Most of the places are no longer shown on modern road maps and special maps of the region have been prepared for this book. Softcover. Brand new book. Most of the places are no longer shown on modern road maps and special maps of the region have been prepared for this book. Kendal Atchison a talented young photographer is Sandra Dallas's daughter. Indeed these two may be the first mother-daughter team to produce a western history book. Sandra Dallas a reporter for Business Week for twenty-five years is the author of Colorado Ghost Towns and Mining Camps No More Than Five in a Bed also published by the University of Oklahoma Press Gaslights and Gingerbread many other books and articles on Colorado and the West and several best-selling novels. "Dallas's book is very readable beautfully illustrated and a perfect guide for anyone wishing to visit Colorado's ghost towns and mining camps. Some of the historic photographs gleaned from Colorado's excellent libraries have not been published before and offer new insights into the mining camps especially during the 1920s and 1930s." ---Colorado Heritage "It is a handy reference for a sojourn through Colorado as well as reading for the vicarious adventurer unlikely to leave the confines of home.I'm not sure what demons Dallas might have unleased but she sure can write an engaging story." ---The Bloomsbury Review "An altogether fine work of several years' undertaking it is a labor of love. Well written and informative it is also an enjoyable and entertaining read."---True West "The author combines careful research and lively vignettes to provide an informative often amusing well-rounded view of life in the Colorado Rockies a century ago." ---The Denver Post "Sandra Dallas an active writer of Colorado history brings her expertise and sense of humor to good use as she describes 147 of Colorado's more colorful communities that flourished at some time between early 1859 and 1899.Kendal Atchison's expertly executed photographs record the present appearance of most of the camps. Altogether this mother-daughter joint effort is a well-turned out brief introduction to these communities." --- Western Historical Quarterly "The rich heritage and stories told are very important in fully understanding the history. The reader will be advised that once you start with this search you will find you cannot put it down-just like the early prospectors-just around the next bend or the next page is that rich vein you need." ---Southern Genealogical Index University of Oklahoma, Norman: 1988. Finnegan analyzes a wealth of newspaper and magazine articles letters to the editor trial testimony books and speeches produced by viewers in response to specific photos they encountered in public. From the portrait of a young Lincoln to images of child laborers and Depression-era hardship Finnegan treats the photograph as a locus for viewer engagement and constructs a history of photography's viewers that shows how Americans used words about images to participate in the politics of their day. As she shows encounters with photography helped viewers negotiate the emergent anxieties and crises of U.S. public life through not only persuasion but action as well. Accessible and groundbreaking Making Photography Matter provides a new consideration of the impact of the still image on our public culture. Cara A. Finnegan is an associate professor of communication at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is the author of Picturing Poverty: Print Culture and FSA Photographs. "The author uses plain language and homey metaphors to excellent effect. A solid and enticing piece of scholarly writing."--David M. Lubin author of Shooting Kennedy: JFK and the Culture of Images "Fine historical research. An important contribution to photographic studies."--Miles Orvell author of The Death and Life of Main Street: Small Towns in American Memory Space and Community "An original and important book that has historical critical and theoretical significance. LIEBLING JEROME PHOTOGRAPHY; BENFEY CHRISTOPHER; LONGSWORTH POLLY & ST. ARMAND BARTON LEVI EDITORS
The Dickinsons Of Amherst
University Press of New England Hanover: 2001. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. A master photographer and three distinguished scholars document the physical world of Emily Dickinson. Jerome Liebling one of our foremost documentary photographers has created a remarkable photographic record of the domestic environment of Emily Dickinson. As a fellow resident of Amherst Massachusetts Liebling was naturally drawn to the Homestead the house in which Dickinson lived and worked. But more remarkably Liebling had the opportunity to document the opening of the Homestead's dark sister the Evergreens - an Italianate villa built for Emily's brother Austin which until recently was still inhabited but which had been preserved almost as a time capsule of the era of Emily and Austin. Though Dickinson lived as a recluse in the Homestead she did not live in the utter isolation that has been popularly imagined. Her life was intimately bound up with the affairs of her friends and family and the domestic situation at the Evergreens inevitably contributed to the environment in which she wrote her poems. Austin Dickinson's troubled marriage and his affair with Mabel Loomis Todd eventually gave rise to the bitter disputes over the disposition of property and the guardianship of Emily's poetic legacy that erupted after his death. In Liebling's evocative photographs the stark austerity of the Homestead and the decaying opulence of the Evergreens offer new insights into the home life that shaped a poet. Three of the foremost scholars of Dickinson's life and work have contributed essays that explore the history and legacy of these two dwellings. Polly Longsworth who wrote the definitive account of Austin's affair with Mabel Loomis Todd and who is at work on a major new biography of the poet reveals some of the information her researches have brought to light -- including a new recognition that Dickinson's anxiety problems were a real and integral condition of her existence an understanding that demystifies some of the more enigmatic aspects of her life including her refusal to publish. Barton Levi St. Armand meanwhile shares the remarkable and previously untold inside story of Mary Hampson the last resident of the Evergreens and of the lives connected with the house over the last century; it was through the efforts of Hampson -- the heir of Austin's daughter -- that the Evergreens was saved from destruction and is now like the Homestead open to the public. Finally Christopher Benfey offers an insightful appreciation of Liebling's photographs and the light they shed on Dickinson and her work; he teases out surprising but convincing affinities between the poems and the art of photography. The heart of this book is the one hundred plus photographs through which Jerome Liebling expands our understanding of Emily Dickinson's world and life. "You might say that the three essays are extended captions" says Benfey in his introduction "taking their prompting and provocation from the images." Includes 138 color photographs 11 x 11 ". . . When she died she Emily Dickinson left a drawer crammed with hundreds of poems that engage the shimmer between the living and deadas this book does. Unreachable through either words or pictures alone the effect of this multidimensional book is to break your heart."Atlantic Monthly "Mr. Liebling's evocative photographs . . . effectively capture the spirit of the two houses. They focus on poignant images like a light-struck glass knob at the Homestead which casts ghostly reflections on a white door; worn stone steps in Emily's garden; her plain white dress preserved in a glass case; a nest of scuffed children's shoes stored at the Evergreens; and the long march of picket fence along Main Streetnow gonethat once united the two homes."New York Times Weekend Excursion "The beautiful photographs and insightful essays in The Dickinsons of Amherst offer fresh retellings of the Dickinson story . . . The essays Liebling's photographs and older photos from the heyday of the Dickinsons in Amherst interact beautifully . . . the book illuminates the poet and her work in incandescent ways."Chicago Tribune "Visitors to either house who peruse the book will marvel at Liebling's artistry at the way he can home in on a detail and make it stand for something larger just as Dickinson did in her spare verses." Boston Globe "Life at Home" section "The lives that Liebling describes here seem not finished but suspended. The inhabitants of these rooms and gardens have stepped out have been detained perhaps longer than they expected but their lives continue here. They continue as an emanation from the place a place defined by the myriad choices that formed it. It is not easy to dismiss as mere sentiment the feeling that these lives are better than oursnot easier but better. Their taste is more sure than ours their style more confident their passions more intense and more pure. Even the outgrown shoes of their children are more beautiful than the shoes in our attics. Or perhaps it is only the simple eloquent perfection of Liebling's photographs that makes it seem so."John Szarkowski Director of Photography Emeritus Museum of Modern Art New York City "The Dickinsons of Amherst combines text with archival images to produce a series of panoramic views of the larger familial social economic and cultural environments of Emily Dickinson. Edifying and revealing this book is a refreshing corrective to the many narrow probings into the secrets of the poet's psyche those glimpses as through the keyhole in her upstairs bedroom door." Billy Collins Jerome Liebling's photographs have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art Getty Museum Boston Museum of Fine Arts Minneapolis Institute of Arts and many other museums and galleries in the U.S. as well as England Spain Italy Germany and Japan. His work is in permanent collections of major museums throughout the world. He is a recipient of two Guggenheim Fellowships and has had many monographs of his work published. Christopher Benfey teaches in the English Department at Mount Holyoke College. He is author of Emily Dickinson: Lives of a Poet 1986 and Emily Dickinson and the Problem of Others 1984. Polly Longsworth is author of The World of Emily Dickinson 1990 and Austin and Mabel: The Amherst Affair & Love Letters of Austin Dickinson and Mabel Loomis Todd 1984. DAGGET DAN
Gardeners Of Eden: Rediscovering Our Importance To Nature
University of Nevada Press Reno: 2005. Softcover. Brand new book. Dagget challenges our culture's assumption that humans are separate from nature and our current notion that the best way for us to protect the land is to leave it alone. He demonstrates case after case of positive human engagement in the environment: managed ecosystems and restored areas that are richer more diverse and healthier than unmanaged ones. Much of pre-Columbian America he contends was not a pristine wilderness but an ancient garden managed over millennia by native peoples who shaped the plant and animal communities around them to the mutual benefit of all. Dagget proposes a radical change in the way we define land health and the ways this health can be achieved. He recommends a new kind of environmentalism where we resume our ancient role as gardeners and stewards of our world reviving damaged land facilitating the return of native species restoring the land's ability to absorb and store water and carbon. This book is essential reading for anyone concerned with the earth and anyone seeking a viable way for our burgeoning human population to continue to live upon it. Photography by Tom Bean. Distributed for Thatcher Charitable Trust/EcoResults. Dan Dagget has been an environmental activist and ecorestoration consultant for over thirty years fighting coal strip mines in Ohio and uranium mining near the Grand Canyon designating wilderness areas and working to resolve conflicts between western ranchers and environmentalists. He is the author of Beyond the Rangeland Conflict: Toward a West That Works and Gardeners of Eden: Rediscovering our Importance to Nature. He lives in Santa Barbara California. "Dan Dagget sees the world freshly in a way that may save it or at least save our capacity to participate creatively in its dynamics. This is the most important conservation manifesto since Aldo Leopold's Land Ethic." Gary Paul Nabhan "With this book Dan Dagget does more than just think outside the environmental box. He has torn up the old box and built us a new and improved one." Ed Marston "An important contribution to reframing Western issues past and present." - Journal of the West University of Nevada Press, Reno: 2005 paperback

KELSEY ROBIN
Photography And The Art Of Chance
Harvard University Press Cambridge Massachusetts and London England: 2015. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. Photography has a unique relationship to chance. Anyone who has wielded a camera has taken a picture ruined by an ill-timed blink or enhanced by an unexpected gesture or expression. Although this proneness to chance may amuse the casual photographer Robin Kelsey points out that historically it has been a mixed blessing for those seeking to make photographic art. On the one hand it has weakened the bond between maker and picture calling into question what a photograph can be said to say. On the other hand it has given photography an extraordinary capacity to represent the unpredictable dynamism of modern life. By delving into these matters Photography and the Art of Chance transforms our understanding of photography and the work of some of its most brilliant practitioners. The effort to make photographic art has involved a call and response across generations. From the introduction of photography in 1839 to the end of the analog era practitioners such as William Henry Fox Talbot Julia Margaret Cameron Alfred Stieglitz Frederick Sommer and John Baldessari built upon and critiqued one another's work in their struggle to reconcile aesthetic aspiration and mechanical process. The root problem was the technology's indifference its insistence on giving a bucket the same attention as a bishop and capturing whatever wandered before the lens. Could such an automatic mechanism accommodate imagination Could it make art Photography and the Art of Chance reveals how daring innovators expanded the aesthetic limits of photography to create art for a modern world. Robin Kelsey is Shirley Carter Burden Professor of Photography at Harvard University. "This intriguing study delves into a subject that has troubled photographers since the invention of the medium in the 1840s: how do the happy accidents arising from a mechanical process relate to human dexterity in creating artistic images Kelsey's subjects range from early practitioners including Fox Talbot and Stieglitz to modernist innovators and 20th-century news photography."Apollo "This ambitious text both scholarly and affecting combines art history psychology and the history of philosophy and science into a shrewd exploration of 'how meaning is produced in a medium prone to chance.' Though Kelsey's primary focus is the development of photography the end result is a wholly informative refreshing and rich perspective on photography and Modernism."Publishers Weekly starred review "Photography and the Art of Chance takes up a venerable question: how can a photograph be art when it is made with a machine that registers phenomena beyond the operator's full awareness With great originality Kelsey shows that photography's history is entangled with the history of chance and he complicates our understanding of the medium in a refreshing way."Douglas R. Nickel Brown University "A brilliant choice of theme for an encompassing revisionist history of photography that shows canonical figures at their best; chance is the flip side of techne and the motor of avant-garde aesthetics as well as a key subject in the history of modern consciousness. Kelsey's explanatory clarity and gift for concision meanwhile are no accident."Matthew S. Witkovsky The Art Institute of Chicago Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts and London England: 2015 hardcover

ODO DAVID; EDWARDS ELIZABETH FOREWARD
The Journey Of "a Good Type": From Artistry To Ethnography In Early Japanese Photographs
Harvard University Press Cambridge Massachusetts and London England: 2015. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. When Japan opened its doors to the West in the 1860s delicately hand-tinted photographic prints of Japanese people and landscapes were among its earliest and most popular exports. Renowned European photographers Raimund von Stillfried and Felice Beato established studios in Japan in the 1860s; the work was soon taken up by their Japanese protgs and successors Uchida Kuichi Kusakabe Kimbei and others. Hundreds of these photographs collected by travelers from the Boston area were eventually donated to Harvard's Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology where they were archived for their ethnographic content and as scientific evidence of an exotic culture. In this elegant volume visual anthropologist David Odo examines the Peabody's collection of Japanese photographs and the ways in which such objects were produced acquired and circulated in the nineteenth century. His innovative study reveals the images' shifting and contingent usesfrom tourist souvenir to fine art print to anthropological "type" recordwere framed by the desires and cultural preconceptions of makers and consumers alike. Understood as both images and objects the prints embody complex issues of history culture representation and exchange. David Odo is Director of Student Programs and Research Curator of University Collections Initiatives at the Harvard Art Museums and a Lecturer in the Department of Anthropology at Harvard University. Elizabeth Edwards is Research Professor in Photographic History and Director of the Photographic History Research Centre at De Montfort University in Leicester England. VALE THOMAS R. & VALE GERALDINE R
Walking With Muir Across Yosemite
University of Wisconsin Press Madison: 1997. Softcover. Brand new book. Does today's visitor trekking Yosemite National Park find it much different from what John Muir encountered a century ago Thomas and Geraldine Vale retrace Muir's path based upon journal descriptions of his activities and experiences during his first summer in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. From the foothills through Yosemite Valley and on up to the Tuolumne Meadows the Vales follow the present roads and trails that crossed Muir's route imagining his reaction to the landscape while reflecting on the natural world in both his time and ours. Illustrated with drawings by John Muir and drawings and photos by the Vales Walking with Muir across Yosemite emphasizes that current visitors to Yosemiteindeed to any national parkcan still experience the solitude wildness and romanticism of nature. They believe however that this modern exploration would benefit from a national parks policy that actively promotes nature study and encourages a more profound interaction between humans and the natural world. 42 black and white photos 17 drawings. Thomas R. Vale is professor of geography at the UW-Madison. He received his B.A. M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California Berkeley. Geraldine R.
