‎Collection of eleven snapshots from the Middle East.‎

‎Iraq 1920. Kept in a clear plastic sleeve. With 11 snapshots all ca. 6 x 9 cm. Collection of 11 snapshots from the early 1920s likely taken by a British soldier stationed in the Middle East. It is difficult to pinpoint exactly where these photographs were taken but presumably in Mesopotamia present day Iraq. Great Britain was actively involved in Mesopotamia from 1914-1932. Prior to the First World War a large portion of the Middle East was in the hands of the Ottoman Empire. However when the Ottomans sided with Germany in 1914 Great Britain sent forces to Mesopotamia to protect the Anglo-Persian oil fields. The British army initially suffered a major defeat but eventually gained the upper hand and captured Baghdad in 1917. In 1920 after the Ottoman Empire was partitioned the United Kingdom formally established control in the region under a mandate of the League of Nations. However the Iraqi people resented this idea and revolted. In 1922 Great Britain and Iraq then signed the Anglo-Iraqi Treaty in which Iraq was given the right for self-government while Great Britain stayed in control of the country's foreign policy. This would last until Iraq's independence in 1932.The present snapshots were taken in the early days of British control in the region and depict the atmosphere at the time. They show the daily life of locals including women collecting water from the river men standing guard and the hustle and bustle in the streets. Also included are various group photos of British soldiers and locals. The photographs show some traces of wear around the corners and edges but are overall in good condition. unknown‎

‎Collection of thirteen press photographs.‎

‎1930. Kept in a brown kraft paper envelope. With 13 gelatin silver prints various sizes. A collection of thirteen press photographs from the 1930s showing Saudi Arabian leaders during diplomatic visits to Europe. The beautifully sharp and clear photographs give a good impressions of what these events must have been like at the time. Most of the photographs come with the text that would have accompanied them when they were published in a newspaper and are stamped on the back by the press agency that had the rights for publication. We have not been able to find any of these photographs in online archives.Four of the images show Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud 1906-1975 during a diplomatic visit to Great Britain. Faisal was the third son of King Abdulaziz the founder of modern Saudi Arabia. Faisal was very intelligent and was given numerous important duties as a result. He was sent on a five-month long diplomatic visit to Great Britain and France when he was just 13 and achieved his first military successes when he was 16. He succeeded his half brother as king of Saudi Arabia in 1964 and became a well-loved ruler. The present photographs however show his visit to Great Britain in 1939. In particular his visit to the Royal Air Force stations in Middlesex and Northolt where he viewed the Hawker Hurricane planes which he considered to buy for the Royal Saudi Air Force. After his return however he decided against it.The other photographs show Fuad Bey Hamza 1899-1951 the Saudi ambassador in France and Fakry Pacha dates unknown the Egyptian ambassador in France during an Eid al-Fitr celebration in Paris in 1939 a portrait of Sheikh Sir Abdullah al-Salim al-Sabah 1895-1965 the 11th ruler of the Sheikhdom of Kuwait and the Kaaba in Mecca during hajj. Some of the photographs are slightly discoloured or creased around the corners. ‎Two Bedouins hunting with birds of prey.‎

‎1880. Tipped onto a stiff paper mount ca. 40 x 30 cm. Kept in a clear plastic sleeve. One albumen print ca. 22 x 27.5 cm. Striking large photograph of two Bedouins on horseback carrying large birds of prey for hunting. Bedouins have a long history of falconry as it was difficult for them to catch live prey in the desert otherwise. They typically captured the falcons trained them for a few months then released them back into the wild before breeding season. This tradition no longer exists in this manner as hunting is now forbidden throughout most of the Arabian Peninsula. As such the present photograph offers a unique insight into 19th-century falconry in the Arabian Desert. The edges are somewhat discoloured and the corners are creased from a past mounting method. ‎Album with photographs engravings and drawings relating to Madeira Tenerife Brazil Argentina Uruguay and Chile.‎

‎1885. Contemporary gold-tooled dark purple quarter morocco brownish-purple pebble-grain cloth sides with a paper label "3" mounted on the front. Oblong ca. 38 x 27.5 cm. With 20 albumen prints 43 plates engraved and lithographed and 3 drawings. Remarkable album documenting the travels of HMS Calliope 1837-1883 a British warship in the first few years after her launch. The ship first sailed to Madeira and Tenerife after which she crossed the Atlantic Ocean to visit various harbour cities in Brazil Argentina Uruguay and Chile. Many of the illustrations and photographs include handwritten annotations about the ship's journey with the exact dates of when she arrived where. As such the album was likely compiled by someone who sailed on the ship during these years possibly a crew member. The album contains photographs drawings and plates relating to the places the Calliope visited between 1838-1840. It starts with photographs of Madeira and Tenerife like the Loo Rock in the harbour of Madeira locals carrying a tourist down the Pico Grande the town of Güímar in Tenerife and an age-old Dragon Tree. As the ship's next destination was Brazil the album contains a number of photographs and illustrations of Rio de Janeiro as well as a drawing of a picnic at the summit of the Corcovado. The Calliope then sailed to Buenos Aires and Santa Fe arriving in August 1838. This part of the album contains a drawing of a gaucho and 6 beautiful photographs by Samuel Boote 1844-1921 one of the most important photographers working in Argentina in the 19th century. His work shows the interior and exterior of the St. Felicitas Church in Santa Fe as well as daily life in this city. The ship then carried the British ambassador from Argentina to Montevideo arriving in June 1839 before continuing to Valparaíso. The final pages of the album contain a map of Montevideo views of Valparaíso and the mountains nearby and a drawing of a bridge. The plates in the album were taken from other works such as Journal of a voyage to Brazil 1824 by Maria Graham and A history of the Brazil 1821 by James Henderson. The photographs were taken in the 1880s which means the album must have been compiled several decades after this particular voyage of the Calliope. However as some of the annotations mention that a location looked different on the plate than when the Calliope arrived the album must have been compiled by a crew member. The Calliope sailed to China after the visit to Valparaíso to serve in the First Anglo-Chinese War 1839-1842. After she sailed to New Zealand and primarily operated in that region until she was converted into a floating chapel in 1855 and deconstructed in 1883. With the yellow bookseller's label of "A & N.C.S.Ld Stationery Dept. 105 Victoria St. S.W." mounted on the back pastedown. The leaves and plates are somewhat foxed likely lacking a plate or drawing on the recto of leaf 16. Otherwise in good condition. hardcover‎

‎[PHOTOGRAPHY - ALHAMBRA - ISLAMIC ARCHITECTURE]. LAURENT, Jean (photographer).‎

‎Photograph album containing pictures of the Alhambra and its Islamic architectural treasures.‎

‎Madrid 1870. Contemporary gold- and blind-stamped green leather with the intials "M.L.B." blind-stamped on the front board gold-tooled turn-ins green watered silk endpapers gilt edges. Oblong folio 62 x 46.5 cm. With 72 large size albumen photographic prints with architectural views including numerous views of Spanish and Western Islamic architectural treasures ca. 33.5 x 24.5 cm 3 large composite photographic panoramas the Alhambra and Granada Cordoba and San Sebastian and 5 photographs of people 3 handcoloured photographs of Spanish costumes and 2 portraits of a woman. 58 of the 72 photographs contain the name of photographer title and number of the image in the negative. An exceptional album with fine views of Sevilla Granada Cordoba San Sebastian and many more. The photographer Jean Laurent was born in France but opened a photo studio in Madrid in 1856. In 1858 the Spanish government commissioned him to photograph the construction of the railroad line from Madrid to Alicante. The results were published and exhibited in many places which brought him considerable success. From 1861-68 Laurent held the title of "Fotógrafo de S. M. la Reina" and produced photos of members of the Spanish royal family. His photo studio in Madrid became one of the best-known from his time which allowed him to open gallery in Paris where he exhibited and sold premium-quality prints from his work in Spain. Although he was interested in industrialisation and intended to convey the image of a modern and economically flourishing country his photographs of the more picturesque aspects of Spain became more popular. The present album contains 34 views of Western Islamic architectural structures and a large 4-part folding panorama of the Alhambra and Granada. Furthermore it contains two examples of photographs on leptographic paper a collodio-chloride printing paper which was sold ready to use. Its manufacture was perfected by Laurent in collaboration with Martínez-Sánchez in 1866.With some slight signs of wear around the spine and the corners of the boards the panorama views are mounted on grey cloth which is somewhat foxed not affecting the actual photograph the album leaves are very slightly browned. Overall in very good condition.l Hannavy Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography II 829/830. hardcover‎

‎Photograph album showing hunting society in Britsh India.‎

‎Cambridge Mumbai New Delhi: Scott & Wilkinson Clifton & Co Hamilton Studios and Kinsey Bros. 1933. Oblong half morocco photograph album by W. Johnson & sons London. With 105 photographs mounted in the album ranging from 16 x 28 cm to 4 x 6 cm 2 photographs loosely inserted and a watercolour mounted at the back 11.5 x 21 cm. Unique photograph album showcasing the vigorous "fox" hunting scene in British India in the early 1930s particularly around Delhi. Most of the photographs show members of the British upper class in India often mounted on horses or posing for a group photograph and accompanied by hounds. The album contains no titles captions or inscriptions and the photographs do not seem to figure recurring individuals which suggests that it was probably compiled to commemorate the hunting and or riding club and its activities in the early 1930s. Numerous photographs show groups of mostly men posing with hounds at lunches and possibly a hunt ball or mounted on horses at jumping events and even a few cup trophies. The very first photograph is by Scott & Wilkinson in Cambridge active before 1933 and was therefore probably taken in England. The other inscribed photographs are by Clifton & Co. and Hamilton Studios from Bombay and Kinsey Bros. which started in New Delhi in 1935.British life in India mirrored life in native Britain and included popular equestrian activities such as hunting. Starting in the second half of the 19th century foxhounds were imported from Britain and subsequently bred in India. Regiments and brigades kept their own packs but at the beginning of the 20th century these had morphed into local hunts. Hounds were kept at over 12 hunting clubs which included Delhi Meerut Narbuda Vale Jaora Poona Bombay Bangalore Ooty Madras Lahore Quetta Peshawar and Karachi. Although the Indian silver fox was sometimes hunted the most common prey was the golden jackal.A different type of hunting popular in India was pig sticking: the chase of a wild boar on horseback with the spear. Several photographs in the album show pig sticking parties either posing or in action and sometimes accompanied by spectators on elephants. In contrast to the jackal-hunt parties the pigstick groups are composed of more military looking men and also include Indian men as opposed to the British-only hound groups. Most photographs show the area around Delhi and include a hunt near Shah Alam's Tomb. A photograph of this event is loosely inserted in the album and dated 1933/34 on the back. Other photographs show the Rashtrapati Bhavan one group shows the Earl later Marquess of Willingdon India's Governor-General from 1931 to 1936. Two images show the monumental Gateway of India completed in 1924 in Bombay Mumbai which can also be seen in an aerial photograph. Several photographs show what is probably the airfield at Karachi as it shows two airplanes loading mail on apparently the first voyage of the Indian Transcontinental Airways. Imperial Airways liner "Hanno" departing from Croydon had left for Karachi on 1 July 1933 via Bahrain and Sharjah. In Karachi the cargo was transferred to the Transcontinental airliner "Arethusa" as can be seen on the photographs. It is unclear why only half of the album was used. It is possible the compiler transferred to Kut in British Mesopotamia Kut al-Imara in modern Iraq. A watercolour on the final page of the album is captioned "A river bank north of Kut".Binding slightly rubbed and worn at the edges. Album leaves foxed throughout but most of the photographs in very good condition. The paper of the large photograph of the group near Shah Alam's Tomb is heavily damaged at the top and left side but the image itself is undamaged. A unique collection of British-Indian hunting photographs in very good condition.l Cf. ‎Album containing photographs of Australia Egypt and France.‎

‎1895. Oblong folio 28 x 39 cm. Contemporary gold-tooled black morocco gilt edges. With 58 photograph prints ca. 21 x 25.5 to 13.5 x 20 cm. Mounted on both sides of the leaves in the album. 60 pp. The album contains 15 silver albumen photographs of Melbourne taken mainly from the series C. Rudd's new views of Melbourne 1886-1887 by Charles Rudd 1849-1901. They show Collins Street Melbourne town hall the public library Parliament House the Court of Law Government House and various other buildings and infrastructure as well as botanical gardens such as Fitzroy Gardens. The photographs of Sydney were the work of the renowned Australian photographer Henry King 1855-1923 born in England in 1855 who emigrated to Australia with his family in 1856. He worked as a photographer at J. Hubert Newman's studio in Sydney before opening his own studio in 1880. King gained recognition for his photographic studies of Australian Aboriginal people and his scenic views of Sydney. He died in 1923 leaving behind his wife son and three daughters. His glass negatives were acquired by J.R. Tyrrell after his death and are now held by the Powerhouse Museum. King is one of Australia's most significant early photographers. The album contains seventeen of King’s photographs of the harbour including Farm Cove and the Circular Quay Government House and interior and exterior photographs of the town hall King and George Street the Mutual Life Association Building the General Post Office and the Ferner Botanical Garden. Rural New South Was appears in nine photographs including images of Illawarra National Park the Hawkesbury River and a series of outdoor photographs taken along the coast at Blackwall and dated July 1895.This curious album of 58 photographs from France Egypt and most importantly Australia opens with a section with six photos from Marseille showing street views the city harbour the Avenue du Prado and the castles. The ten photographs from Egypt depict both the cultural highlights of the country such as the Pyramids the Sphinx the Citadel of Cairo and the Palace of Gizeh as well as ordinary Arabian villages and street scenes. They stemmed from the ateliers of the Abdullah brothers of Constantinople. The Abdullah Frères namely Viçen 1820-1902 Hovsep 1830-1908 and Kevork 1839-1918 Abdullahyan were three Ottoman brothers of Armenian heritage who gained international fame as photographers during the late Ottoman Empire. Some evidence suggests that he may have collaborated with the Zangaki Brothers and he may have been the official photographer for the Universal Company of the Suez Canal. Later he worked in partnership with the British-Italian photographer Antonio Beato. With an owner’s inscription in pencil "a appartenu Alfred Schmid" some photographs are captioned in black ink or pencil detailing the places. With a small label from the bookshop that sold the album: "Papeterie Sauwen-Jehotte" in Antwerp. The edges are somewhat bumped and some browning and foxing throughout. Otherwise in good condition. unknown‎

‎Sydney Harbour and Circular Quay.‎

‎Sydney 1875. Ca. 8 x 46.5 cm. Panorama photograph consisting of three albumen prints joined together with white bookcloth. A long folding panorama photograph of Sydney Harbour in the late 19th century. It prominently features the east side of Circular Quay which at the time was a commercial working wharf dominated by the wool trade. The many wool stores that were built here have since been demolished. The large wool store of Hill Clark and Co at the end of the wharf which was completed in 1883 cannot be found on the photograph which means it must have been taken in 1882 at the latest. The photograph is not signed but is reminiscent of the work of Australian photographers Charles Bayliss 1850-1897 and Francis Whitfield Robinson ca. 1819-after 1882 who made similar panorama photos of Sydney around this time. The photograph is slightly discoloured one of the bookcloth hinges is partly torn. ‎[PHOTOGRAPHY - EGYPT]. ZANGAKI BROTHERS‎

‎Cover title: Aegypten 1891.‎

‎Egypt: Zangaki brothers 1891. Original gold-stamped bubble-grained maroon cloth over boards modern maroon cloth spine and leather corners. Gold stamped title and year on the front white watered silk endpapers. Oblong album 31.5 x 41 cm. With 34 large albumen prints mounted on heavy cardstock leaves. Most of the photographs are numbered and captioned in French in the negative and signed 'Zangaki'. The last one is signed Sebah & Joallier. The Zangaki prints measure 22.5 x 28.5 cm; the Sebah & Joallier one is 20.5 x 26.5 cm. A large German album with 34 albumen prints of Egypt. The Greek brothers G. and C. Zangaki were photographers who worked in Egypt in the second half of the 19th century. Due to increased tourism to this region after the opening of the Suez Canal there was a large demand for souvenir photographs. Photographers like the Zangaki brothers as well as Sebah & Joallier catered to this. The Zangakis were among the first commercial photographers to produce large-scale images of Egypt. They travelled through the country with a portable darkroom to capture high-quality images of famous monuments and daily life though the latter were usually posed. These images were then printed and sold to tourists either separately or compiled into albums. According to John Hannavy the brothers "produced some of the finest images of late Victorian Egypt". The 34 photographs include: the great pyramid Cairo and the Nile dervishes and other exotic looking locals Egyptians standing on top of the sphinx obeliscs the Ramesseum Karnak temple the temple of Dendera the Great Pyramid Egyptians climbing the pyramid the mosque and tomb of Muhammad Ali Saqqara and many others. With two small library stamps on the first page not affecting the photograph. The book has been rebacked. The left side of the front board has faded and the corners are worn. Minor browning around the edges of the leaves. Back flyleaf loose. The photos are crisp and clear and the book is otherwise in good condition.l Erdem Views of Egypt by Georgios and Constantinos Zangaki: Examining a late nineteenth-century photographic album at the Art Gallery of Ontario thesis 2006; Hannavy Encyclopedia of Nineteenth Century Photography pp. 1036 1093 & 1521. ‎[Texas Revolution]: [Photography]‎

‎Large-Format Photograph Picturing the Last Reunion of the Final Five Survivors of the Battle of San Jacinto Posed with Colonel Fannin's Goliad Cannon and a Large Texas State Flag‎

‎Houston: Nelson Art Studio 1906. About good. Albumen photograph 9.25 x 7.25 inches on a printed studio mount measuring 14 x 11 inches. Substantial rubbing and soiling to printed mount with some loss of printed text top two corners chipped right corner chip costing a few words of text. Extremities of photograph worn and a bit chipped with some soiling to the image area. Overall a battered but charming survivor. A stunning original photograph of the final five survivors of the crescendo of the Texas Revolution the Battle of San Jacinto on a detailed printed mount which provides important information on the subjects. These five Texian veterans are all identified in the printed caption at the bottom. From left to right they are: William Physick Zuber of Austin John Washington Darling of Taylor Stephen Franklin Sparks of Rockport Levi T. Lawlor or Lawler of Florence and Alfonso or Alphonso Steele of Mexia. Each man's age is listed as well. The latter man Alfonso Steele was the last surviving participant in the battle when he died in 1911. Zuber stretches the Texas flag out from the flag staff while the other four men sit or stand at right facing the camera. One of the veterans sits on the cannon used by Colonel James Fannin at Goliad. The photograph was taken at the final annual meeting of the Texas Veterans Association on April 21 1906 the seventieth anniversary of the battle.<br /> <br /> According to the online Portal to Texas History: "The Texas Veterans Association an organization of those who had served prior to during and immediately after the Texas Revolution held its first convention in Houston on May 13-15 1873 with about seventy-five veterans present. After 1876 the annual meetings held in some seventeen different Texas cities always took place in the week including April 21 San Jacinto Day. The association dissolved in Austin on April 19 1907 during its thirty-fifth annual convention. With its dissolution its work was taken over by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas."<br /> <br /> The present card mount containing the photograph is printed with important information on all four sides though some of the information at the top has been chipped away. We would prefer to know the handful of missing words but we cannot find another example of this photograph on the same mount for comparison. Still the heading of the photograph identifies the subjects as survivors of General Sam Houston's Army from the Battle of San Jacinto fought April 21 1836. The caption in the left margin states that "This Picture Was Taken at Their Last Reunion. They Have Resolved Never to Meet Again Being Too Old to Travel. This Picture Can Be Had for One Dollar. Address V.C Terry Houston Texas General Delivery." A few words in the right margin are obscured but can be easily inferred: "These are the Remnant of General Houston's Army. Five Living Out of Six Hundred and Eighty-Six Who Captured Santa Ana and His Murderers Twenty Miles Below Houston." The last portion of text below the identifying captions at bottom addresses the other Texas war relic in the photograph: "This is Colonel Fannin's Cannon at the Massacre near Goliad where Two Hundred and Eighty Men Were Shot Next Day Two Weeks After the Fall of the Alamo."<br /> <br /> The present photograph is decidedly rare but not completely unknown. The only other version of the image we can locate measures roughly the same size but includes a sixth Texas veteran named Asa Collinsworth Hill who holds the flag staff but was not part of Houston's forces during the Revolution and is affixed to a different printed mount with identifying captions for the veterans but with a simple title reading "Veterans of the Mexican War -- 1836" above two lines of poetry. This other version contains a photo credit and copyright notice from C.A. Major of Goliad who apparently took the original photograph at the reunion.<br /> <br /> The present example pictures only the five surviving veterans of San Jacinto is affixed to a much more verbose printed mount with a blindstamp in the center of the bottom margin credited to Nelson Art Studio in Houston. Curiously Asa Hill may have been removed from the middle of this version of the photograph through photographic development methods. In any case these are the only two versions of this photograph we can find. We locate examples of the six-man version on the simpler mount at the Bee County Historical Commission in Beeville with an image hosted by the University of North Texas's Portal to Texas History the Texas State Library and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Library which may own more than one copy. We have been unable to locate any other examples of the present photograph on the same printed mount as seen here. This somehow appropriately-wounded photographic relic featuring the heroes of the Texas Revolution should positively sing to collectors of Texas history. Nelson Art Studio unknown‎
