[LUMIERE BROTHERS – COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHY]
Archive of 19 letters on the Lumière's researches on color photography

LUMIÈRE BROTHERS – COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHYArchive of 19 letters sent to the Lumière brothers and one offprint of their paper on colour photography.

An exceptional set of 19 letters expressing the enthusiasm of the scientific community and photographic societies following the production of the first colour photographic prints by the Lumière brothers more than ten years before their invention of the autochrome 1903-1904.

Louis Lumière achieved this exceptional result by improving Gabriel Lippmann's process which was based on "an interference method that enabled him to record the solar spectrum in its natural colours". Alphonse Berget one of Lippmann's students published a report on his discovery in 1891.

" Louis Lumière at the head of a flourishing photographic products company mastered every aspect from formulation to the industrial production of plates that could be used to make interferential colour photographs. As soon as Lippmann's invention was announced a correspondence was established between Gabriel Lippmann and Louis Lumière and after a year of fine-tuning Louis Lumière presented the Académie des Sciences with some surprising "Lippmannian" views : flowers oranges landscapes stained-glass windows a naturalised parrot flags etc. A plate depicting the solar spectrum was presented to the Société française de photographie. Any object with shimmering colours could be recorded on a plate as long as it was still : the exposure time could be counted in hours ! . They were reduced to thirty minutes and then to a few minutes and the first portrait of a young girl in "natural colours" was taken in the summer of 1893. " translated from Bertrand Lavédrine Peindre avec la lumière. Entre art et science les prémices de la photographie couleurs au XIXe siècle Nov. 2015 Paris France.

Post-1894 letters underline the Lumière brothers' efforts to promote their process.

The printed pamphlet is the Lumière brothers' last publication on their trichromatic method superposition of three monochromes - red yellow and blue before their discovery of the autochrome. It begins with a theoretical study of this method followed by a practical study of the process.

Provenance: Dr Paul Génard a great collector of early films and projection devices and leading authority on the Lumière brothers. Top edges gilt. 127 pages of text and 107 plates including five heliotypes and 9 color plates illustrating equine anatomy. Preface by Leland Stanford. Photo of book before rebinding laid in. An important book in both the history of photography and equine literature with a fascinating back story about how it was researched and written. Railroad baron California Governor and horse racing mogul Leland Stanford he also bankrolled the founding of Stanford University had a wager with some of his horse racing buddies about whether all four hooves left the ground at a point during a horse's trot. Stanford hired antiquarian bookseller-turned-photographer Eadweard Muybridge to provide photographic evidence of this split-second event which he did in 1872 with an elaborate set-up of multiple cameras and other equipment. In 1874 Muybridge shot and killed his wife's lover and was embroiled in a dramatic court battle bankrolled by Stanford in which he pleaded insanity based on severe head injuries received from an earlier stagecoach accident but which the jury decided was deserving of an acquittal as a justifiable homicide. Muybridge continued his equine photography projects for his benefactor until the present volume was published in which Muybridge's photographs were used as a basis for most of the illustrations but which only briefly mentions his name in the preface and appendix. Muybridge later published his landmark and comprehensive Animal Locomotion series in eleven volumes Parr and Badger vol. 1 p. 52. This 1887 opus contained 781 plates of animals and humans in various actions and contributed greatly to scientific and artistic knowledge of anatomy and movement. ; Folio 13" - 23" tall . James R.
