The photographs feature Kowal in his various priestly vestments in formal shots with family members and alone portraits of the Kowal family and group snapshots of St. Mary's Church parishioners and choir girls. Includes a color portrait of Kowal in an elaborate gilt frame with conclave glass measuring 12 by 18 inches. The photos are in very good condition and housed in folding clamshell boards save for two loose ones many of which bear the mark of Zaff Studio and Strauch Studio New Kensington photographers. Written almost entirely in Japanese with some English notations at the back on publisher etc. this first edition in slipcase was printed on January 20 1975 and published on February 10 1975. This is Volume 9 ONLY out of a 12 volume set focusing on the masters of Ukiyo-e art. <br><br>Ukiyo-e meaning "pictures of the floating world" is a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th to the 19th centuries. It primarily consists of woodblock prints and paintings that depict scenes of everyday life landscapes and theater often featuring bold colors and stylized designs. <br><br>Multiple artists are represented within this Volume 9. In addition to Utagawa Toyokuni I also included is artwork from Kunimasa Toyohiro Toyoharu Toyokuni II Kitagawa Utamaro known for his bijin-ga or "pictures of beautiful women; Katsushika Hokusai Hishikawa Moronobu Utagawa Kuninao and others. <br><br>This book reads from back to front. Bound in off-white publisher's cloth the front cover bears Japanese characters in black and a decorative silver foil border along the spine. Black Japanese characters on the spine also adorned with a red number 9. Illustrated dust jacket bears large illustrations in black and white on the front and back cover with a bright orange spine with black and white lettering. Endpapers are illustrated with brown ink against a light brown paper. <br><br>The first half of this book when reading correctly back to front contains beautiful full page plates of each artist's work with titles in Japanese some of which are fold-out. The second half gives a lengthy section of details of each art piece with dimensions signature name what collection it was from and the design and interpretation of each piece along with a black and white "thumbnail" picture of the artwork. A list of illustrations is at the back. 143 pp. The slipcase matches the illustrations on the dust jacket yet is in full color. The spine is black with white and red lettering. <br><br>Laid in is a document in black and white also written in Japanese with additional information on author Juzo Suzuki with his photo dimension information and more information on the artwork. In the slipcase this large folio copy measures 17 inches tall x 12 inches wide x 1.25 inches thick. OCLC #: 917528646.<br><br>ABOUT THE MAIN ARTIST: Utagawa Toyokuni 1769-1825 also often referred to as Toyokuni I to distinguish him from the members of his school who took over his go art-name after he died was a great master of ukiyo-e known in particular for his kabuki actor prints. He was the second head of the renowned Utagawa school of Japanese woodblock artists and was the artist who elevated it to the position of great fame and power it occupied for the rest of the nineteenth century. The dust jacket is near fine with some rubbing and light crinkling at the head and foot. Slipcase if VG with some scratching and wear particularly at the edges. Illustration plates are magnificent. ‎Robert Hunt geologist. Autograph Letter Signed 'Robert Hunt' to 'Mrs S. C. Hall' Anna Maria Hall describing three subjects 'upon which I could write fairly well' for publication in the St James's Gazette.‎

‎30 April 1861; Museum of Practical Geology Jermyn Street London. 3pp 18mo. Bifolium. In good condition on lightly aged paper with the reverse of the second leaf laid down on part of a leaf from an autograph album which carries a biographical caption in a contemporary hand. Mrs Carter Hall's connection with the St James's Gazette is unclear but she has evidently asked Hunt to contribute to the magazine. Hunt begins his reply: 'Dear Mrs Hall there is no scarcity of subjects - my difficulty is to select the subject which I can deal with in a satisfactory manner & which shall be at once instructive & entertaining.' He proceeds to give a short summary of how he would treat two subjects 'upon which I could write fairly well' 'The Balance of Nature' and 'Light and Life'. After the second he writes: 'A third subject strikes me. Just now the Scientific World are excited by the Discoveries made by Kirkhoff & Bunsen as to the Composition of the Sun. I could give you a readable paper containing all the new facts - which we might call The Composition of the Sun or The Sun and the Earth'. He concludes by stating that he is 'really desirous of aiding you - to the best of my powers. ‎Australia 1915. Two albumen prints of Australian soldiers one a group shot the other of men on horses in formation. Notes on the verso of an image of 20 mounted cavalry state the date erroneous "Rightmost rider is John G. Hamilton Australia 1920s" and a group shot of 54 men in 4 rows with the caption "John G. Hamilton with Egyptian Force of Australian Army Egypt 1920's and John may be on the 3rd row from the bottom 4th man from the right. " This photo is posed in front of a stone building. <br /> <br /> There is a record of a John George Hamilton of the 23rd Infantry Battalion embarking in Melbourne on 10 May 1915. The 23rd Battalion of the Australian Army was raised in 1915 as part of the Australian Imperial Force for service during World War I and formed part of the 6th Brigade attached to the 2nd Division. After being formed in Australia the battalion was sent to Egypt to complete its training before being committed to the Gallipoli Campaign as reinforcements in September 1915. They remained on the peninsula until the evacuation of Allied troops in December when they were withdrawn back to Egypt where they were reorganized before being transferred to the Western Front in March 1916. Over the course of the next two-and-a-half years the 23rd took part in a number of significant battles in France and Belgium before being disbanded in mid-1919 following the conclusion of hostilities. <br /> <br /> Images approx. 8 x 6" mounted on brown card.
