United Kingdom 1960. ALBUM. Very good condition. An impressive British album of circus performer photographs including 3 of the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus and images of some famous traveling menageries including Bostock & Wombwell's and Mander's Menagerie as well as acts many with manuscript captions. The album with front cover label reading "Stourpaine Bushes '74 Site and Vehicle Caravan". Stourpaine Bushes was the site in Dorset England where the Great Dorset Steam Fair took place starting in 1969.<br /> <br /> Many performers identified with captions including: <br /> Temple Mead Bristoff "The Cumberlands"; Vaclav Zelenka & Specially Constructed Trampoline; The Brockways Masters of Agility Balance and Comedy on Bicycles; Sally & Kevin McGrath Kevin the runner up in World Professional Skating Championship; Bert Stevenson & Joe Marshall"; "The Three Edigehs ; Jousson Bros Gerard & Philippe; Joe Jackson Jnr"; Bostock and Wombwell's Menagerie famous menagerie founded in 1810 including images of the three menagerie wagons "Rajah" "Pedro" and "Nero" with images showing drivers staff and children; the late Billy Smart & Sons; Jimmy Kaye's Freak Show; Mander's Family on the front of their "Grand Star Menagerie" the family in front of the huge caravan; this Menagerie was founded by William Mathers in the 1860s; he was considered the greatest showman of his day; and Harry Cody's Circus Front.<br /> <br /> Other images include 24 photographs of the trope performing on the rink ice in an elaborate ice shows; Lou Jacobs clown Gunther Gebel Williams Mani Niedermeyer with Polar bear Le Chabre Dorellos Sisters the Breuer Troop Trio Findai Berosini & Chimps "Franz Krefts brown bear the most difficult & dangerous animals to train"; Werner & Denyse Muller; Lucien Meyer's Skating Chimpanzees; and Ringling Bros. A wonderful large album of 127 post card size venacular photographs each captioned depicting the everyday life of people in the streets villages and country side; these are authentic images of real life in India at the time. Also includes images of Bombay and the Palace at Amber. The photographer is unidentified; probably an American couple on an Indian tour.<br /> <br /> The majority of the photographs concern life in India from people at work in a wide range of trades to women of different castes to wonderful marketplace scenes including children at play holy men wrestlers a carousel captioned "a Merry-Go-Round" and traveling artists.<br /> <br /> 40 images of rural India include: native houses village streets & centers a potter at work village shops village "bazarrs" sic showing all manner of sidewalk vendors and stalls village wells women walking to market with large baskets carried on their heads holy men sweet and bread sellers selling "pop" soft drinks from a cart burial of a distinguished person "a bride and her maids pay visits to relatives part of the 3 day wedding ceremony".<br /> <br /> 11 images titled "Women of India" show Hindu Jain and Mohammedan women women spinning women carrying goods stacked on their heads women with children and high caste women. <br /> <br /> 28 images of Indian men include an image title rather mysteriously "rural native police English Providence" porters young boys high diver gate keeper cook shoe mender snake charmer street musician clown traveler traveling artist traveling school teacher tobacco seller "by the puff" holy men of India "fakirs" wrestlers and a transvestite the image titled "an efeminate sic gentleman Indian man dressed in a sari.<br /> <br /> 21 images of the stunning Amber Palace and Fort in northwest India the oldest surviving palace in India built of red sandstone and white marble whose architecture shows a blend of Muslim and Hindu influences. Images include walls and grand entrances ceremonial elephants stunning interior views of the palace and its rich alabaster carvings and views of the surrounding landscape taken from the Palace walls. The Jas Mandir is also pictured; this is the most beautiful structure at Amber divided in three parts: the Hall of the Private Audience on the ground floor the Glass Palace and the Hall of Glory on the upper floor.<br /> <br /> 15 images of Bombay with : a native policeman 2 colonial police officials the harbor Bombay city streets including shots of a large double decker tram the "red light" district Hindu Caves at Garapuri and Elephanta Island interiors of the carved caves and vultures "who devour the Parsi's dead in the Towers of silence".<br /> <br /> 12 images titled "Travel in India" include an elephant with howdah for carrying passengers ox drawn carts horse drawn carts and carriages railway carriages including one with a train door marked "Servants" a train station and a colonial postal box.<br /> <br /> A large photograph album 15 x 11 1/2". Black stiff cloth covers cord bound. Hand lettered "No. 5" at upper left corner front cover. Images measure 5 1/2 x 3 1/2" laid down 3 or 4 per page with captions hand lettered in white. The first 2 leaves detached loosely inserted. The photographs in fine condition.<br /> <br /> An album of evocative images of the life experienced by Indians living in colonial India. Images probably taken by an American traveller as soda is referred to as "pop" harbor is spelled without the "u" and the album itself is made in the USA. unknown

Eight photocollage plates numbered and signed in pencil on verso by Rubenstein all with tissue guards. With pencilled signature and inscription: "For Arnold Horwitch with admiration and gratitude 7/15/95." The tiniest bit of soiling to label on portfolio otherwise in mint condition.<br/> <br/> This is a very rare portfolio based on Rubenstein's photo/text/video installation "Critical Mass" created between 1989 and 1993 in collaboration with Ellen Zweig with technical assistance from Steina and Woody Vasulka. According to the Exhibition description at the MIT List Visual Arts Center "The 50th anniversary of the atomic bomb developed at the Los Alamos Laboratory and first detonated in the southern New Mexico desert on July 16 1943 inspired artists Meridel Rubenstein Woody and Steina Vasulka and Ellen Zweig to probe the ironic juxtaposition of two very different elements of American society. 'Critical Mass' a multimedia installation examines the unusual meeting of J. Robert Oppenheimer and other Manhattan Project scientists with the American Indians of San Ildefonso Pueblo whose land adjoins Los Alamos New Mexico. Their worlds fused at 'the house at Otowi Bridge' Edith Warner’s Rio Grande riverside home where both groups patronized a small restaurant she operated during the 1940s." Born in Detroit Michigan in 1948 Rubenstein received her bachelor's degree in social science with a film-making emphasis from Sarah Lawrence College and a Master's and M.F.A. degree from the University of New Mexico. She is the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation the National Endowment for the Arts and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and has taught photography at San Francisco State University and the Institute of American Indian Arts. The New Mexico Museum of Art the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Smithsonian American Art Museum are among the institutions with her works in their collections. She currently lives and works in Santa Fe. Rubenstein inscribed our copy to its original owner Arizona collector Arnold Horwitch. <p>Woodstock NY 1920-1924. 1920-1924. Fine. - Two original photographs by Eva Watson-Schutze the first is an original 6-1/8 inch high by 8 inch wide brown-toned platinum print photograph of Federico Stallforth and his 2 daughters Anita on his left side and Gioja on his right side. Seated and portrayed from the chest up Federico looks upon Gioja who appears to be seated in his lap while Anita leans into him on his other side. The photograph by Eva Watson-Schutze is signed with her monogram in the upper right corner. The second is an original 8 inch high by 6-1/8 inch wide brown-toned platinum print photograph of Adie Estebena Risse the sister-in-law of Federico Stallforth. Adie is seated and portrayed in three-quarter profile from the hips up. Attired in a white lacy dress with a long pearl necklace with a silk head covering. The photograph by Eva Watson-Schutze is signed with her monogram in the upper left corner. Fine.</p><p>Eva Watson-Schutze 1867-1935 was a founding member with Alfred Stieglitz of the Photo-Secession movement. As a young woman she was most interested in painting and was a student of Thomas Eakins. After pursuing photography for some 20 plus years she returned to painting in the 1920's. She was known for her pictorialist style. She spent her summers and autumns at the Byrdcliffe colony in Woodstock New York from 1910 to 1925.</p><p>Federico Stallforth 1882-1960 was born in Mexico of German parents. He was involved with his brother in banking and in 1906 he married Anita Risse. With his family in 1912 he fled the revolutionary forces in Mexico and settled in the United States. For most of the remainder of his life he lived in Woodstock New York and worked as a successful investment banker. For many years he was a supporter of the German government but despite many attempts on the part of the American government he was never convicted of being a spy. In 1942 he joined the American side and worked in the OSS. His sister-in-law Adie Estebena Risse also settled in the artists colony of Byrdcliffe in Woodstock where she occupied herself as a sculptor.</p> Woodstock, NY, 1920-1924.
