1919. Original photograph. Very Good. Contains head-and-shoulders portraits of eight young women in white nursing caps and uniforms arranged within a shield labeled "Great Falls Columbus Hospital 1919" with a white cross at the bottom. Image size is 10" x 8". Mounted in the original mat with the names of the eight women written boldly in pencil on the verso. Surnames are: Donat Youngren Hutcheson Oneal Lichter Allen Goodyear and Fromhart. Overall size is 13.5" x 11.25" Founded in 1892 by five Sisters of Providence nuns the hospital was named Columbus after the explorer. Those five nuns nursed more than 99 patients the first year made 43 home visits served 170 meals and wrote 475 prescriptions according to an article in the Great Falls Tribune. A nurses home was added to the hospital in 1903. By the time the young women in this 1919 photograph graduated the Wesley Van Orsdel Nurses Home had been built across the street. unknown

Sepiatone print on old stock a 3/4-length studio portrait of Colonel Simmons wearing a dark suit and vest high white collar with silk bowtie watch chain with pendant large ring on his left hand holding his spectacles. Image size 13" x 10"; overall 17" x 14". Margins toned; dust soiling on verso. Creases seen here were exaggerated by lighting and are barely discernible on the original. "Roscoe Conkling Simmons born 1878 or 1881 died 1951 was an African-American orator civic leader journalist and politician. He was graduated from Tuskegee Institute in 1899. He served as head of the Colored Division of the Speakers' Bureau of the Republican National Committee in 1920 1924 and 1928. He was an advisor to three American presidents. He worked for the Chicago Defender from 1916 through the mid-1930s and for the Chicago Tribune from the late 1940's until his death in 1951.The date of his birth is uncertain. Obituaries state his age in 1951 as anywhere between Simmons' own assertion that he was sixty-three and his oldest friends' statements that place his age nearer to seventy-five. A birth date of June 201878 in Greenview Mississippi is listed in the earliest inventories of his papers produced by the Harvard University Archives. A passport appliction holds a 1918 certification of birth signed by his parents that state the year and place of his birth as 1881 in Macon Mississippi." Harvard Archives dating this print as 1930. 1925. Original photograph album. Very Good. Oblong string-tied album of black cardstock leaves 11†x 13†photographs mounted on 35pp blanks at the rear. Bound in black flexible boards with an embossed sailing ship and gilt lettering Photo-Album on the cover. Pasted in are 116 albumen and silver gelatin prints ranging from small candids to 8 ½†x 10 ½†group portraits a few fading overall sharp and clean. Laid into the album are a Japanese news article a small head-shot of an older gentleman and a watercolor portrait 10" x 8 ¼†of a man’s face. Most of the photographs in this album. circa 1895-1925 were taken in Mie-Ken or “Mie prefecture†part of the Kansai region on the main island of Honshu. The group and individual portraits reflect new social and economic developments and cultural norms that emerged during this period. Subjects are shown in either traditional Japanese garments or in Western dress. Group shots often depict people wearing both styles within the same picture. There are many group shots of schoolchildren of both sexes young people in uniforms posed before buildings with Japanese signs on them as well as many formal group shots of families some “nuclearâ€â€”husband wife children— others extended by relatives. Individual shots of young children show them almost invariably in western dress one posed with his tricycle young boys in uniform a young girl in kimono showing a dance move while holding a fan infants in traditional robes and young men in business suits. Several birdseye views feature very large groups of rural people in traditional dress posed outdoors. Among the most striking photographs are: one 8 ½†x 10 ½†showing 11 doctors/ medical students posed around two corpses one smiling happily being dissected on two tables; four women and one man posed around a table doing handwork weaving tatting; men in western dress “strap-holding†inside a streetcar; and 5 actors 2 male 3 female on stage in costume. ~~ The Meiji period 1868-1912 saw the restoration of the Emperor this time with a centralized bureaucracy behind him after years of shogun rule. Japan was under heavy influence from Western political economic and educational models and the country became more capitalist industrial and progressively democratic offering free education to youngsters of both genders. Transportation and communications systems were modernized the feudal lords and samurai lost their power and a powerful national army and navy were created. By the early 1870s the government declared all classes of people to be equal. The Taishu period 1912-26 saw the continued influence of Western culture and values such as efficiency and individualism continued to replace more traditional ones. Japanese participation on the world stage continued to grow as the nation co-founded the League of Nations and emerged on the winning side in WWI. By 1925 there was universal male suffrage in Japan. Corruption in government increased however and the West began to form negative views of this newly-powerful non-white nation exacerbated by Japan’s poor treatment of China. unknown

IMAGES OF A MINNESOTA TOWN LATER DESTROYED BY A TORNADO
A collection of 190 real photo postcards circa 1910 from Fergus Falls Minnesota and the nearby cities of Alexandria and Garfield. Incorporated in 1907 Fergus Falls is situated along the Otter Tail River in the western part of the state about 60 miles from Fargo North Dakota. Scandinavian immigrants arrived shortly after the town was founded and today Fergus Falls is the synodic headquarters of the Church of Lutheran Brethren of America.<br /> <br /> Two major tornadoes hit Fergus Falls during the early 20th century the second on June 22 1919 killed 57 people leveled 44 city blocks including the business district and destroyed 159 homes. The only church edifice left standing after the cyclone which remains the second deadliest in Minnesota's history was the predominantly black Baptist church. This collection includes a real photo postcard of the memorial windows at Grace Methodist Church.<br /> <br /> The postmarks on some of the postcards indicate these images were captured about a decade prior to the disaster when the population of Fergus Falls was just under 7000. They show various residents as well as homes and businesses. There are several shots of young adults gathering along the river and four portraits of students at the Park Region Lutheran College including the baseball and basketball teams respectively. Another four images show floats in an Independence Day parade sponsored by local businesses. About ten percent of the images bear the stamp of a Fergus Falls photographer: Andrews Studio Bowman & Lyden A. Carlson or Rabajoff.<br /> <br /> Only a small number of the postcards were mailed. These bear holographic messages on the verso including one of the Mill Street Bridge in Fergus Falls from which the stamp has been excised. Others bear holographic notations on the verso identifying individuals or locations seen on the postcard. They seem to indicate the images once belonged to Beda Brita Edlund 1887-1947 a Swedish immigrant who arrived in America in 1889. The collection is accompanied by a sheet of handwritten notes identifying other individuals seen on the postcards.<br /> <br /> Some general edgewear and occasional soiling to the postcards. A few are creased or lightly stained but overall the images are clear and free of fading. unknown
