New York: Magnum Photos 1969. 1969. Good. - An original 11 inch high by 14 inch wide black & white gelatin silver photograph by the American photographer Charles Harbutt. The 9 inch high by 13-3/8 inch wide image is a close-up of a tray labeled "Warrants To Be Canceled" next to what may be a teletype or possibly an adding machine with a roll of tape feeding from a spool through an unseen printer. The photographer's name and credits "Copyright by Charles Harbutt Magnum Photos Inc. ." are stamped in black on the verso. The photograph is further annotated in pencil on the verso: "69-55-17/12". There is minor darkening to the top of the right margin and the bottom corners are lightly creased. There is a light crease in the image near the top right of the print. Two small rectangular pieces of tape have been removed from the bottom margin leaving minor glue remnants and rubbing. <p>Born in Camden New Jersey the American photographer Charles Harbutt learned his skills from his membership in the Teaneck NJ amateur camera club. Influenced by modern photojournalism he contributed images to major magazines throughout the US Europe and Japan. While working for the Catholic magazine "Jubilee" Harbutt's documentation of social and economic disparities inspired the Castro underground to invite him to document the Cuban Revolution. A member of the international photography cooperative "Magnum Photos" Harbutt twice served as its president. He joined the faculty of New York University's Parsons School of Design as a full professor and was a guest artist at numerous other Universities including MIT. Very good. - A sienna toned photograph by The Misses Selby portraying a woman in a bejeweled white dress seated next to her young child a children's book open in her lap. The oval image within an 8-7/8 inch high by 6-3/4 inch high sienna background is printed on 13 inch high by 10 inch wide matte finish cream stock. The image is signed "Misses Selby N.Y." in the print. There is some minor spotting to the borders and image and a small ink mark in the right margin. The photograph is housed within a light grayish brown folder with the photography studio's paper label decorated with their logo "The Misses Selby 628 Fifth Avenue" mounted on the folder's front cover. The folder's covers are detached. Near fine in a good folder. <p>The photographers Emily and Lilian Selby collaborated together as "The Misses Selby". Circa 1840's-1850's. . Very good. - An original 7-3/8 inch high by 5-3/8 inch wide soft-hued oval portrait possible a salt or albumen print of the American historian and Hispanist William Hickling Prescott mounted on 12 inch high by 9-7/8 inch wide heavy buff stock with clipped corners. The photograph portrays Prescott in profile from the chest up formally attired in a white shirt with a dark bow tie around the raised collar. A dark vest and jacket complete the historian's attire. The oval photograph is set within an oval double-ruled printed gilt frame. William Hickling Prescott has been misidentified as "Wm. Henry Prescott" in gilt print at bottom. There is a tiny faint stain to the left edge of the photograph and some minor spots of foxing to the mount. Very good. <p>The author of "The History of the Conquest of Mexico" the historian William Hickling Prescott 1796-1859 is considered to be the first American scientific historian defining the field as a rigorous academic discipline. Primarily focused on political and military events Prescott was admired for his careful systematic use of archives and accurate recreation of sequences and events. He specialized in late Renaissance Spain and the Spanish Empire penning such works as "The History of the Reign of Ferdinand and Isabella the Catholic" "The History of the Conquest of Mexico" and "The History of the Conquest of Peru" among others. Near fine. <p>A wonderful association copy of the rare first and only edition.<p>Inscribed by Joe Schwartz on the front cover to his good friend and colleague Dave Robbins who inspired him to join the legendary Photo League: "To David Robbins and family - Joe Schwartz 1972".<p>An introduction by Lorser Feitelson precedes the illustrations. The manuscript for Feitelson's introduction dated June 4 1965 is located in the Smithsonian Archives of American Art.<p>The artist Lorser Feitelson 1898-1978 is known as one of the founding fathers of the Southern California-based hard-edge painting.<p>Born in Brooklyn NY the photographer Joe Schwartz 1913-2013 concentrated on commercial art as a student at Alexander Hamilton High School where he also began experimenting with an inexpensive camera. An activist engaged in street politics he photographed the condition of the poor and downtrodden. He was inspired to join the Photo League by his friend and fellow photographer Dave Robbins in 1936. As a member of the Photo League he shared a commitment to portraying the lives of America's working people with fellow League members Sid Grossman Eugene Smith Dorothea Lange and Margaret Bourke-White.<p>David Robbins 1912-1981 was a Photo League photographer from 1936 through 1951. The photograph is numbered 9/100 on the verso and signed by Kevin McDermott with the date 2003.<p>The elephant images that appear throughout the book were created by Gorey in 1985; the sketches and images on the endpapers were created by Gorey in 1995. Very good. <p>The Belgian photographer Pierre d'Harville b. 1939 is best known for his homoerotic images. He was the manager of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Charleroi.<p>Serving as a poetic preface the essay "Caresses par la Lumiere" explores the feelings of a nude male model as he is being photographed. The essay is by the Belgian writer and film director Nadine Monfils. Monfils b.1953 directed the film "Madame Edouard" 2004 and has written a series of detective novels based on her character Inspector Leon a policeman who knits.<p>Tels Quels founded in 1979 is an LGBT association formed by gays and Socialist militants. Under the leadership of Luc-Daniel Dupire Tels Quels organized the first Gay and Lesbian Film Festival of Brussels in 1981. In that same year the monthly news magazine Tels Quels was founded in an attempt to present a positive image of the gay life style. The dust jacket is rubbed & chipped with tears to the edges of the rear panel including a longer 3 inch tear to its top edge. The jacket's rear panel is also soiled & stained. 192 pages with profuse full-page black & white illustrations from photographs by Paul Swiridoff. Very good in good dust wrapper. <p>From the library of Leonard Bernstein inscribed to him by his assistant the German conductor & violinist Alois Springer on the flyleaf.<p>The book is a collection of 90 photographic portraits of leading figures from German intellectual and artistic life among them Ernst Bloch Heinrich Boll Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau Gunter Grass Walter Gropius Hans Werner Henze Carl Orff and Walter Jens.<p>In 1966 Alois Springer born 1935 then violin soloist and second conductor at Luxembourg's Radio Symphony Orchestra was invited to Tanglewood by Erich Leinsdorf. He worked that Summer as an assistant to Leinsdorf and Adrian Boult. Alois Springer had met Leonard Bernstein at the festival the previous year and he subsequently went on to work as Leonard Bernstein's personal assistant and assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra from 1967 to 1968. He conducted the young 14 year old cellist Lawrence Foster & the New York Philharmonic for the March 31 1968 broadcast of Bernstein's "Young People's Concerts". There is a small tear to the top edge of the first leaf with tiny holes to the top edge of the next 2 leaves. Circa 1910. 1910. Very good. - sc - An original soft hued 5-1/2 inch high by 7-7/8 inch wide black and white photograph by this accomplished amateur woman photographer from Upstate New York. The image depicts a farmer standing on the long flat bed of his hay wagon in front of his large barn. Hay is flying off the end of his raised pitchfork into the barn's hayloft. A handsome white draft horse is depicted in profile. The rump and legs of another white horse can be glimpsed behind the first. Shadows from the overhanging branches hint at the majestic size of the tree which casts them. There is a one and a half inch scratch at middle right of the photograph probably in the negative and some slight browning at top right. There are glue stains and remnants of black paper from a scrapbook to the corners of the verso. Very good. <p>An accomplished woman amateur photographer Jeannette Vogt hails from Upstate New York. An illustration of her 1890s photograph of a woman photographing through a doorway is depicted in Naomi Rosenblum's book "A History of Women Photographers" Abbeville Press 2010. The caption next to the illustration reads "Jeannette Vogt Jean Bernard C. 1860 - date unknown". 1987. 1987. Fine. SIGNED LIMITED EDITION OF ONLY 20 COPIES - sc A superb 10-1/4 inch high by 3-1/4 inch wide photogravure at the top of a 24 inch high by 20 inch wide sheet of hand-made poster paper. The soft sienna-toned image depicts the river in a bucolic country setting with a lush willow in the foreground woods and brush on the bank of an island and with the far bank merely glimpsed in the early morning fog. The photogravure is signed in full by David Hanson in pencil and numbered by the photographer. Tastefully printed in sienna on two lines along the lower half of the poster sheet is the title "The Hudson River" followed by the photographer's name "David A. Hanson". A fine beautiful poster. <p>Limited edition of only 20 copies signed by the photographer.<p>A student of Minor White David A. Hanson is a teacher of photography at Farleigh-Dickenson University. The older woman is dressed in a black dress with black frill and a high collar hinting at white frill. A black frill-decorated bonnet adorns her head. At her side centered in the image is a younger blond haired woman attired in an attractive white blouse and black skirt. Branches of trees are glimpsed in the background at left and a vase of flowers is perched on a mantel at right. Identified as Marina C. Risse and Lia Risse of Garatshay=usen Germany and dated 1920 in pencil on the verso the women hint at familial affection. Mounted by the photographer on a 13-1/2 inch high by 10 inch wide cream mat with the photographer's studio "Fritz Thudicum / Bildmassige Photographie / Tutzing a. Starnberger-See" stamped on the verso of the mat. The photographer's name is additionally blindstamped at bottom left of the image and the photographer has also boldly signed his name "F. Thudichum" in pencil on the mat under the portrait at right. The mat is slightly foxed and the edges of the mat are browned. Very good. - sc An original 4-3/4 inch high by 7 inch wide albumen print by Carlo Ponti depicting the Palazzo Vendramin the residence the Duchesse de Berry purchased from the descendants of the Vendramin Calergi family in 1844. The image shows the palatial front of the Palazzo its balcony overlooking the canal and front door opening up near a gondola moored next to the columns at the foot of a few steps. A sculpture adorns the garden wall at right and the facade of another home can be viewed along the right of the image. Mounted by the photographer onto 8-3/4 inch high by 11-3/4 inch wide light green mat board with printed white double rules framing the image. The photographer's blind stamp "Carlo Ponti / Venezia" is embossed at the bottom of the mat and the image is identified in ink on the mat below the photograph. There are a very few tiny spots in the image possibly in the negative. The recto of the mat is slightly soiled with much offsetting to the verso. A very good beautiful photograph. <p>The Swiss-born Italian photographer Carlo Ponti c.1823-1893 moved to Venice in 1852 after having studied photography in Paris. Having opened his own studio which catered to tourists he sold photographs in all formats. He won many awards including one which he was awarded in 1862 for his invention of the Magalethoscope an apparatus which allowed photos to be viewed through a large lens which created the illusion of depth and perspective. It is not surprising given this invention that he was also the optician to Italy's King Victor Emanuel II. [Venice, circa 1860's]. unknown

The corners of the covers are slightly creased and the covers are rubbed with a few scratches and a serrated vertical crease. 96 pages illustrated with color and a few black & white photographs of 26 prisoners who were confined to death row throughout the country. There is a very small piece out from the bottom corner of 2 leaves. Good. <p>This 96-page magazine insert includes an essay co-written by Speedy Rice of the Gongaza University School of Law with William B. Moffitt President of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and an essay by journalist Ken Shulman. Full and double-page color photographs by Oliviero Toscani are accompanied by brief interviews with each of the 26 inmates. Also included are quotes about the death penalty from Pope John Paul II the Dalai Lama and Martin Luther King Jr.<p>Published by the Benetton Company as a magazine insert in the premiere issue of Tina Brown's "Talk". The publication was part of an advertising campaign launched by Benetton in January of 2000 which included billboards ads in major magazines including Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair and on-line images. It is not surprising that this controversial campaign against the death penalty generated protest as well as legal challenges and lawsuits. Sears which was about to carry the Benetton label in their stores pulled the line before it even hit the shelves.<p>The Italian photographer Oliviero Toscani b. 1942 is not a stranger to controversy. From 1982 through 2000 he designed controversial campaigns for Benetton photographing subjects which tackled important issues such as AIDS racism and war. One of his campaigns featured Therese Frare's photo of David Kirby dying of AIDS surrounded by his grieving family. Toscani resigned from Benetton following the controversy over this death row campaign but did not shy away from controversy. He tackled gay rights in 2005 in an advertising campaign for the men's clothing line 'Ra-Re' and tackled the subject of anorexia in 2007 with his photographs of a highly emaciated model.<p>Although Benetton's death penalty campaign drew protests and boycotts from various sources including Victims' rights groups the campaign did not seek to address the nature of the crimes nor that of the criminals or victims. In Toscani's words "This campaign is not about victims. It is about the death penalty. The death penalty is unreligious. The 10 Commandments say 'Thou shalt not kill.' It is against the law." Harvey Lee Green Carlette Parker and Christopher Simmons are included among the prisoners pictured and interviewed in the magazine. Christopher Simmons was a juvenile offender facing execution in Missouri. On March 1st 2005 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favour of briefs submitted by Simmons finding the application of the death penalty to those under eighteen years of age to be unconstitutional. Other inmates pictured in the book include:<p>Kevin Nigel Stanford who was 17 at the time of his arrest. His sentence was commuted to life in prison by the Governor.<p>Leroy Orange confessed after 12 hours of interrogation and alleged torture. Governor Ryan granted him a full pardon based on innocence.<p>Jeremy Sheets' conviction was overturned because the lead witness against him committed suicide. He was released in June 2001.<p>Joseph Amrine was released from prison in July 2003 for reasons of "probable innocence".<p>John Lotter is still on death row. His murder case inspired the film "Boys Don't Cry".<p>Carlette Parker was one of a few women on death row.<p>Steven Parkus was removed from death row in 2007 when the Missouri Supreme Court determined that Parkus is mentally retarded and therefore not eligible for execution.<p>RARE. Light green marbled boards backed with a tan cloth spine titled in brown on the spine. The edges of the slightly warped covers are rubbed. Illustrated with 57 superb full-page and double-page photographs reproduced on 60 pages. There is minor rippling to the pages possibly from humidity. Very good. <p>First edition limited to 5000 copies with text in Czechoslovak Russian and English.<p>RARE.<p>The brief English introduction to this book of stunning photographs consists mainly of a short biography of the photographer. It reads: "Karel Ludwig 1919-1977 today one of the best known Czechoslovak photographers became acquainted with the camera only by accident in 1939. Without any professional training he started to make publicity photographs for a periodical at Zlin. In 1940 he published his first picture in a Prague magazine and became a popular contributor to all leading magasines in the following two years. The pictures included in this first collection are mostly from this period. Karel Ludwig after an interruption commencing in 1942 resumed his activity in 1946 by preparing further publications." It is not surprising that many of Karel Ludwig's photographs have a theatrical and sometimes cinematic flair since from 1943 through 1948 he headed the photography department of the Lucernafilm Studios in Prague and was involved with cinematography magazines.<p>VERY SCARCE.
