Gossage John photography and Gerry Badger text
John Gossage: Berlin in the Time of the Wall 1982-1993: An Exhibition About a Book and its Photographs
Chicago: Stephen Daiter Contemporary. Near Fine. 2005. First Edition. Softcover. essentially as-new with just a touch of surface wear in the upper part of the front cover. B&W photographs Per an explanatory note this is "a customized edition of 'Berlin in the Time of the Wall' a book an artwork and a history offered by one of the most thoughtful and reflective artists of our time." In other words this is not the book itself published in 2004 by Loosestrife Editions but rather the catalogue that accompanied an exhibition about the book -- that is celebrating its publication -- that was presented in Chicago in early 2005. The brief introductory essay is by Gerry Badger who just to confuse things a little more had also written the text for the original book. And once more: don't confuse the two. This catalogue is 72 pages in length not including covers -- not 80 as I've seen stated elsewhere -- and contains about sixty photographs whereas the original book was 464 pages long. Includes "Publication History of John Gossage." . Stephen Daiter Contemporary paperback books

Slight fading and spotting crack in the glass negative appearing in lower left but still a clear image of the town; very good overall. By 1854 the town boasted a population of about 1000 and was home to five hotels a school a restaurant two stables two meat markets six carpentry shops four blacksmiths four clothing stores several general stores and of course many saloons. A telegraph line reached the town in 1855. Forest City suffered several devastating fires over the years with the worst one occurring in 1883. Although efforts were made to rebuild most of the mines had dried up and the town's population began a steady decline. Today it is a ghost town. Early images showing the still-prospering town are quite scarce. unknown books

Monument erected in honor of 12 men who were massacred by bushwackers sic during the Civil War at Trading Post Kansas manuscript note on verso of mount
1890. Photograph 7 x 4 1/2 inches affixed to larger mount picturing in the foreground an obelisk on which are engraved the names of the victims a grove of trees to the rear. The monument actually memorialized those killed at the 19 May 1858 "Marais des Cygnes Massacre" the "last significant act of violence" in the "Bleeding Kansas" conflict; on that day a group of marauders from Missouri kidnapped 11 unarmed free-staters and killed five of them an act widely condemned in the national press and used by John G. Whittier as the subject of a poem. Mount browned and chipped image quite faded in the lower left corner small chip in the left edge. Still a good example.

unknown books
