LGBTQ ART & PHOTOGRAPHY MAPPLETHORPE Robert photographs; SHANGE Ntozake foreword
Black Book Inscribed to Ken Moody
New York: St. Martin's Press 1986. First Edition. First Printing. Square quarto 29.25cm; full black cloth with titles stamped in silver on spine; dustjacket; 14914pp; illus. Inscribed by Mapplethorpe on the front endpaper to model Ken Moody: "For Ken - one of my favorite models - Thank you Robert Mapplethorpe '87." Some trivial wear along lower board edges else Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped priced $40.00 with some mild wear and a single closed tear along lower edge of front panel; Near Fine. Distinguished copy of one of Mapplethorpe's most astonishing and controversial works a full-length photographic study of black male nudes - an erotic fixation Mapplethorpe developed later in his life. Black Book is comprised of 91 images of male models many of whom he had intimate personal relationships with including his lover Jack Walls. Ken Moody the recipient of this copy was a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology and fitness instructor at a gay-owned gym in New York when he was connected with Mapplethorpe through a mutual friend. "I met him at his studio at 24 Bond Street and we started shooting immediately. He asked me to take off my shirt and I sat in front of the camera. It was then that he produced one of the most perfect photographs that we ever took together. When we met nothing struck me as odd or terribly different or even exceptional about Robert. He just seemed like a nice white man although he was very quiet. He was very very professional and I believe that's probably because I fell outside the category of man that he was attracted to. I knew what his tastes were and I also knew that I was not that.Robert and I shot together over three years - 1983 '84 and '85. I reckon we did it 12 times in each of those years maybe a bit less. I remember reading on the internet that I was his most-photographed subject.I didn't think it was exceptional at the time I had no idea. I just assumed that when a photographer found a subject that they liked they would work with them a lot. I knew that there was chemistry between us. I knew that from the first day. I could always tell when I have chemistry with a photographer and with Robert I knew immediately that he was going to produce incredible photographs" Stansfield Ted. "Being Mapplethorpe's Muse." Another Man. October 27 2017. Moody appears in Black Book on pp.84-91 more than any other model; the photographs of him are among the most celebrated examples of Mapplethorpe's work. The volume contains a brief moving foreword by the late poet Ntozake Shange along with the full text of her poem "irrepressibly bronze beautiful & mine. St. Martin's Press unknown books

They Became What They Beheld
New York: Outerbridge & Dienstfrey / Ballantine 1970. First Edition. First printing. Small quarto 21cm x 23cm; gray paper-covered boards hardcover; dustjacket; 157pp unpaginated; illus. Fine in the original printed mylar dustwrapper which shows some light rubbing and surface scratches still Very Good or better and rarely seen. Somewhat uncommon cloth edition of this experimental pastiche of Carpenter's aphoristic writings and Heyman's documentary photographs. Heyman b. 1930 is perhaps best known as Margaret Mead's long-time collaborator and co-author with her of the books Family and World Enough. Carpenter was a pioneer in the field of visual anthropology and a frequent collaborator with Marshall McLuhan to whose work the current volume clearly owes a debt. An easy book to find in softcover but the cloth edition is elusive especially in the absurdly fragile mylar dustwrapper. Outerbridge & Dienstfrey / Ballantine unknown books

Teacher's Album Photography
Teacher's Album of 124 Photographs from Rural Midwestern School in 1920s
Rural Schools Photo album from a teacher working in 1920s in several rural Midwestern America including Michigan Schools. 124 original silver gelatin print photographs detailing the lives of teachers students and community members around the one-room schools that served small farming communities. 124 black and white silver gelatin print photos various sizes from 2.5 x 1.5 in. to 4.5 x 6.5 in. Photos date from 1922-1929. Original paper boards. 7 x 12 inches. 58 pages. Album from teacher who worked at Pearsall School 1922-23 Eddy School 1923-24 Baker School 1924-25 Country Farm School 1925-26 Dye School 1927-28 and Dorr School 1927-29. In addition to photos includes 32 pieces of ephemera including drawings invitations valentines and numerous press clippings with updates on the various schools. Most of the photos identify the school and include group photos of the children. These one-room schools had few pupils often under 20 in the entire school so teachers had to be prepared to instruct students at multiple levels. Many of the group photos show children in working clothes such as overalls and simple cotton dresses. In some photos it's clear that children are barefoot while others taken in cooler months show them bundled up in jackets and work boots. In addition to photos of students posing by their schools there are images of special presentations and students at leisure. One image shows the children all dressed in capes as part of a musical performance; another shows two students and the teacher riding bicycles on a sunny afternoon. There are 47 individual photos of students from Dorr and Loomis Schools with their first and last names handwritten below. One particularly striking image of a young boy Ronald Bishop comes with additional information on his fate: "Killed by car". Some photos identify community members such as "Nora and Hazel" and "Mr. Barnes" who appears to be a delivery person in his official cap and horse-drawn buggy. <br/><br/>Newspaper clippings on the various schools provide updates on the institutions and students' progress. "Hazel M. Hummel Teacher. Our school closed for vacation with Christmas program at the schoolhouse. After the program.the ladies ten treat dus to popcorn balls and candy which we enjoyed very much. Santa Clause was there and we all received a generous share of the presents with with the tree was loaded." "We now have an enrollment of 13.Our percentage of attendance was 98 last month. We went flowering last week and found adder-tongues May flowers and a few lilies. The with graders have finished all their books and are reviewing now in preparation for the examination next week.Last Friday we celebrated Willard and Lucille Youngs' birthday with a potluck dinner at the school-house." "There are now 21 pupils.the primary grade pupils have made brownies lanterns and witches in the kettle for Hallowe'en seat work. The older grades made Hallowe'en posters for Friday's art class. The eight grade agriculture class have collected and mounted in a scrapbook the leaves of the trees in our neighborhood. We all enjoyed our vacation Thursday and Friday as Miss Hummel attended the institute." This is a clear reference to ongoing training sessions for the teacher to stay up to date on new pedagogy and educational topics showing the formalization and training required for women to pursue this profession. Very good condition. unknown books
