Philadelphia: Mammoth Publishing Co. 1893. First Edition Thus. . Decorative Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. Truman a distinguished correspondent for the NY Times during the Civil War and author among other works of a classic study on dueling is the author of this history of the Columbian Exposition better known now as the Chicago World's Fair. The book covers in detail every aspect of the Exposition from its origin as an idea for the celebration of the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America; the innovative use of electric lighting for the first time at such an event; the assassination of Carter Harrison the World's Fair Mayor to its closing on Oct. 30 1893 and its record-breaking attendance. First Edition Thus several publishers produced editions of this book. About 8 1/4 x 10 1/2 inches 610 pages in light blue cloth-covered boards with a complex pictorial design in red and gold on the front cover and spine. Frontispiece of the Fair grounds and numerous photo-engraved reproductions of the Fair's exhibits and events. Boards show moderate edge and surface wear and light soiling. Spine ends are slightly frayed and color has faded though gilt lettering and decoration on front and spine is intact. All hinges are intact binding is firm. Text edges show moderate soiling and foxing; previous owner's signature on front end page. Text is clean complete and unmarked no tearing or creasing. A very decent copy of this account of a major historic event. Boards and text are clean and unmarked tight and square not remaindered. The dustjacket shows no more than a bit of minor surface wear and rubbing no tears creases or chipping not price-clipped. A collectable copy. Haim Chaim Nahum the last Hakham Bashi chief Rabbi Ottoman dynasty photographic portrait
Photographic Image. Very Good. No Binding. 40 x 30 CM possibly 1910's or earlier photographic portrait of the last Ottoman chief rabbi Hakham bashi who was one of the most eminent rabbis in the Middle East. Chaim Haim Nahum Effendi 1872-1960 was a Jewish scholar jurist and linguist of the early 1900s. He was born in 1872 in Izmir. He was sent by his parents to a yeshiva in Tiberias after which he studied at a French lycée for his secondary education and obtained a degree in Islamic law in Istanbul. Thereafter he attended a rabbinical academy in Paris from which he received his semicha. At the same time he studied linguistics history and philosophy at the Sorbonne's school of oriental languages. Upon his return to Istanbul Nahum occupied various teaching positions including at the Turkish military academy. While there he became acquainted with many of the leaders of the Young Turk movement who gained power in 1908. In 1909 Nahum succeeded Moses Levi as Hakham Bashi or chief rabbi of the Ottoman Empire. During the peace negotiations following Turkish War of Independence that followed World War I Nahum was a member of the Turkish delegation that signed the Lausanne Treaty. For his services to the Turkish government he was given the title of efendi. In 1923 he received an invitation from Moise Cattaoui Pasha head of the Jewish community of Cairo to become chief rabbi of Egypt. He was appointed a Senator of Egypt's Legislative Assembly and was a founding member of the Royal Academy of the Arabic Language. Among his many scholarly works was a translation into French of all Ottoman firmans or edicts sent to the governors and rulers of Egypt by the Sublime Porte from the Turkish conquest of Egypt in 1517 until the late 1800s. From Egypt Rabbi Nahum was also active in international affairs establishing contacts between Jews throughout the world. Early in his rabbinical career he visited Ethiopia and convinced that the "Falashas " were Jews arranged to have a few brought to Egypt and educated there. He was also eager to foster future Jewish leadership and sent young men to study at the Sephardic Rabbinical Seminary located on the island of Rhodes which at that time belonged to Italy. Naum Shoucair 1863-1919 intelligence officer and historian was educated at Beirut university and in 1886 came to Egypt where he joined the Intelligence Department of the Egyptian Army. In 1900 he was transferred to the Sudan Government and was appointed Director of the Historical Section. He served under Lord Kitchener and Sir Reginald Wingate and assisted in the arrangements for the escape of Slatin Pasha from Omdurman in 1895 for which he was decorated by the Emperor Francis Joseph. He became a well known expert on Sinai and due to his intimate knowledge he was sent to Sinai in 1905 on several important missions accompanying Captain Phipps-Hornby of HMS Diana on a mission to Akaba in 1906 and later he served as a member of the Sinai Boundary Commission. Shoucair wrote his History of the Sudan in 1903 History of Sinai in 1916 and at the time of his death was completing a history of Arabia. 0.
