Western Photography. Travel
A Tour Including Some of the Garden Spots of the Arid West; Affording an Opportunity to See What Has Been Accomplished Through Irrigation. caption title
Various locations in the West 1909. Very good. Forty-seven leaves containing forty-one photographs 4 x 6 inches supplemented by postcards and a few newspaper clippings. Oblong octavo album. Original leather cover gilt black paper leaves. Spine perished but holding covers worn. Some leaves intentionally trimmed on fore edge. Two photos loose and laid in. Contents clean and fresh. An interesting album documenting a train trip to the Western United States taken by several businessmen from Chicago on a tour to study irrigation investments in Colorado Idaho and Wyoming. The album starts out with panels from the trip brochure pasted onto the first two leaves followed by newspaper clippings documenting the trip as well as a map of the train routes in the west and a sheet of stationery signed by all the members of the party. The trip was organized by Trowbridge & Niver a municipal bond company based in Chicago and one Denver newspaper headline notes "Half-Billion Dollars Represented in Party. Many are already backing projects here and are making trip to investigate." Each photograph is captioned with a typed label documenting stops along the route starting with Fort Morgan Colorado. There are several images of Eldorado Springs including the swimming pool and a large building whose roof says "Moving Pictures" which we presume to be an early movie theatre. There are many group shots of the "Buffalo Party" along the way all looking quite dapper in caps and touring coats out to spend their millions. One image shows the group on a tour by buggy captioned "Our party inspecting irrigated orchards at Palisade Colorado." There are three photographs of Salt Lake City followed by a series in Idaho which includes a charming photo of several women laughing captioned "Shoshone Indians at Pocatello Idaho." There is a series taken along the Snake River in Idaho and Oregon followed by several images taken in Boise. This cataloguer's favorite is a pair of photos taken at the local pool showing the men in their swimsuits: "Buffalonians in the Natatorium Boise." The final four photos depict the group at stops in Wyoming. Throughout the compiler has used postcards to set the scenery for the trip using the photographs to capture the group itself on tour. Altogether a wonderful album documenting a business trip yet assembled like a family vacation album or young woman's scrapbook. The format speaks to the novelty of such a trip even for businessmen in the early years of the 20th century. unknown books

Maritime Photography
Archive of Nearly 400 Photographs of Ships Published by the R.J. Waters Company of San Francisco
San Francisco: Waters Company 1915. Very good. 393 silver gelatin photographs each 8 x 10 inches. Each image annotated in pencil on verso corresponding to numbered index sheet. Formerly mounted with remnants of glue on verso. Images generally clean with minor wear and soiling. Several images lightly creased. An extensive photographic archive from the R.J. Waters Company of San Francisco depicting nearly 400 ships from the turn of the century. Vessels range from 19th century clipper ships to the seven-masted behemoths of the early 20th century together with a few schooners whaling barks and the odd steamer or two. Many are British with a good representation of American-built vessels as well as ships from France Germany Australia Sweden and other nations. The ships are sorted here alphabetically and correspond to a numbered print issued by the Waters Company and present here which is titled "Collection over 500 Photographs of Sailing Ships." A further note asks that you "Kindly Order by Number" as each ship is noted with a number next to its name. The images themselves are notated accordingly with name and index number with ships occasionally having more than one view. Ships currently under sail are denoted with an "X". Many of the ships are sailing vessels from the 1880s and 1890s and provide historic detail about the wide variety of ships coming in and out of San Francisco's busy harbor. The views have been taken from various vantages resulting in views of the San Francisco harbor and shoreline as well as at least one shot of Alcatraz in the distance. Many of the vessels have secondary "biographical" information with them adding to the research value of the archive.

R.J. Waters 1856-1927 was a California native who first opened a photo studio in Virginia City Nevada in 1886. He opened a commercial photography studio on Sutter Street in San Francisco in 1892 and ten years later added a business partner and changed the name to R.J. Waters and Company. The firm claimed to "photograph anything and anywhere" and as a result had a wide array of images on offer including handsome panoramic views of San Francisco both before and after the Great Earthquake. Maritime photography seemed to have been a matter of opportunity and Waters seems to have spent time both aboard ships and down at the docks making an effort to photograph every substantial vessel which entered San Francisco Bay. There was certainly a market for images of sailing vessels as evidenced by the present archive and its index card and the present archive may have been a shop file used for ordering prints. Altogether an interesting study of maritime history emphasizing San Francisco's importance as a port of call for international trade. Waters Company books

Waddell Clyde; Preston M. Charles
A Yank's Memories of Calcutta Photo Album with Interesting Provenance Ephemera Laid In
Houston TX 1946. Hardcover. Very good. Black buckram album 10" x 13" containing a one-page printed introduction by Preston and 60 gelatin silver prints by Waddell inserted into pre-cut corners rectos only each with a fairly detailed typed caption underneath. Very good condition. According to the Introduction Clyde Waddell was Chief Photographer for the Houston Press before entering the Army where he was attached to the Public Relations Staff of the Southeast Asia Command. After two busy years on documenting action on the Burma front Waddell took the photographs in this album while on leave in Calcutta. "By the time he completed this project which brought him into some of the remotest out-of-bounds areas" writes Preston "he was flooded with requests from Americans and Britishers for copies of his photographs. That is how this album came to be.As a documentary of Calcutta it's tops." The album includes wonderful views of the city and its people including many bustling street scenes buildings Hindustan Building Karnani Estates American Red Cross Burra Club Jain Temple Nimtolla Mosque the Stock Exchange billboards street vendors and performers among them a snake charmer and shops and markets--including a wonderful shot of American GIs browsing at a book stall. There are also scenes of poverty and struggle including striking tram workers homeless people sleeping in the streets an opium den and a woman dying on a sidewalk as people walk by indifferent to her plight. The captions are chatty offering both information and Waddell's personal commentary on the scenes. This particular copy of the album belonged to Lyle Oberwise 1908-1993. Like Waddell Oberwise was a an American Army photographer assigned to the China-Burma-India theater of operations. But he is better known as a prolific Milwaukee street photographer whose work was discovered only upon his death. More than 43000 slides he shot in Milwaukee between 1945 and 1993 now reside at the Milwaukee County Historical Society. There is a photo of Oberwise in his military uniform mounted on the verso of the title page of this album. Also tipped in or laid in are a Red Cross Guide Book to Calcutta Agra Delhi Karachi and Bombay 93 pp with folding maps; tickets and programs for two American Red Cross-Burra Club tours of parts of Calcutta; An American Red Cross Guide to Calcutta for Servicemen 4 pp including a double-page map; and an uncredited 8" x 10" photograph of the Taj Mahal. hardcover books

Women Massachusetts Boston Brahmin Photography
Photograph Album of roughly 1400 Pictures Taken by a Young Woman with a Connection to the Cabot Family of Boston Showing a Modern Eye for Composition Circa 1930
Boston 1930. Oblong quarto 49 pp. With appx. 1400 photos most measuring less than an inch square with roughly 175 in larger formats up to 3 ½ by 5 inches. Very Good. A wonderful labor of photographic love created by an unidentified young woman with ties to the Cabot family of Beacon Hill. The album composed largely of tiny contact prints glued in neat grids. Off-kilter compositions - a portion of a steeple against the sky the tail of a dog etc. - are mixed in with more traditional landscapes leading one to question whether the photographer had modernist aspirations or just took a lot of pictures.

The photographer is unknown but our best guess is that it was someone who was a friend of Ellen Cabot of Beacon Hill perhaps while both were students or just after. Ellen Cabot the most frequent subject of the album is shown in a variety of settings often accompanied by her dog Prowler. Aerial photography the New England coastline camping life in Cambridge and equestrian competition are all on display. Other highlights include a dog named Benito Mussolini and artful shots of a monk's torso. A portion of the photos perhaps five or ten percent are not present though the album is otherwise in excellent condition. Handwritten label on the front reads "Newport Races to Topsfield autumn 1930". Overall the album is a testament to the energy and spontaneity of youth and the possibilities of the photographic form as well as an intimate look into Boston's storied upper class. unknown books
