Photography: Textiles: Lace
An Archive of Scranton Lace Company Sample Images
Scranton PA ca. 1925. 675 gelatin silver photographs measuring 3.25” x 4” approx. depicting lace samples against a black background item numbers pinned to lace. Some curling else generally fine. Plus 140 lace sample cyanotypes measuring 4.75” x 3” approx. Generally very good. Plus 31 additional images in black-and-white: eight 15” x 12” approx. others various smaller sizes. With: faux-leather album measuring 13” x 11” approx. and titled “THE SCRANTON LACE COMPANY / Corner Glenn Street and Meylert Avenue” on paper label to front cover. Interior marked “curtains/table coverings book no. 3.” Contains 273 images of various sizes cyanotype and gelatin silver mounted on black paper some captioned with names of product lines. Plus: two invoices for yarn and other textiles. Joints and edges worn several pages detached. Contents generally fine.

A sizable archive of over 1150 images from the Scranton Lace Company a major manufacturer that operated from 1890 to 2002 consisting of samples used in home decor — primarily window treatments and table linens -— likely photographed for internal purposes. Composed mainly of product sample photographs including images of intricate lace patterns against a dark background and with inventory numbers pinned to the sample. Several enlargements of full table cloths and settings also included with those mounted in the album cut — with striking effect — to create the illusion of a three-dimensional perspective. More than 200 of the images are cyanotypes which are notoriously fugitive to light and are here uncommonly well-preserved. The company was a leading producer of decorative lace throughout the 1900s. Notably the invoices and marginalia indicate at least some of these styles were made from Rayon which had only debuted commercially in the U.S. in 1924. Also noteworthy firm designer Hugh Rodham likely responsible for many of the patterns pictured here is the grandfather of Hillary Clinton. The bulk of the company’s extant archives are held by two regional museums: Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage and The Waverly Community House. A comprehensive representation of period lace styles ranging from traditional to contemporary and art-deco patterns all rendered in exquisite detail. We will note for purely self-serving reasons that two small lots of about 50 photos — both of a similar nature and from the same company — made more than $1000 each at the 2015 Swann vernacular photo auction. hardcover books

PHOTOGRAPHY BROADSIDE Paris 1860s
Photography Broadside advertising "Photography Universal Du XIX Cecile" Paris ca 1860s
Rare Photography Advertising Broadside for a Parisian photography studio operated by Allophones Lionel who was active in the 1860s according to Getty Images. Lionel advertises a guarantee that no photographer had offered: a proof - "epreuve" - of the image before the photograph is printed and if the client does not like the image the photographer will take a second photograph and offer a second proof for no additional charge.

A caricature of the famed French photographer Nadar appears to sit on a camera in the broadside's highly decorative design. The sheet measures 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches and is normally aged with slight chip in upper left corner else very good condition. Photographs of individuals in the carte-de-vi site style established in the 1850's became more popular in the 1860's with many photographers competing for clients. This richly designed broadside must have appealed to new customers. We have not found another example of this broadside. unknown books

New York Photography Reister Harry
Archive of 100 Photographs from New York Photographer Henry Reister advertising Remington Typewriters the New York Telephone Directory Other Various Products and depicting the People and Architecture of the New York Region c. 1915-1930
New York and Environs 1930. Excellent. We find scant information on Henry Reister a professional photographer operating throughout the New York metropolitan region in the early part of the century. His studio moved several times from the Bronx to Bridgewater New Jersey then to Woodlawn New York. This interesting and varied collection from his estate shows the type of work available to a professional photographer operating in New York during the period - architectural shoots product photography events and some portraiture. The opulent wealth of New York's upper classes during the 1920s is on display in Reister's architectural work which makes up a large portion of this collection. The burgeoning commercial age is also shown in his product photographs most notably a series of photographs of Remington typewriters a series of photographs of the newly created New York Telephone Directory two photographs of automobiles and a series of brightly-lit interior grocery store displays.

Contents as follows:

Seven images advertising typewriters with five showing a young woman posed with a Remington typewriter; five images of the New York Telephone Directory; five images of brightly lit grocery store interiors most focusing on elaborate lighting on a dairy display; two images of automobiles one showing a man in fine dress posed alongside an automobile the other showing a close-up of a license plate; thirteen varied product images including proto-modernist images of radiators an image of the Cory Smoke Telegraph Indicator three floral still lives and an opulently presented bowl of ice cream; forty-six architectural photographs including a rather stark series of institutional interiors including lavatories extravagant gardens the interiors of a bank on Broadway and high end domestic interiors; six photographs of the Yorkville Social Center Baby Parade of 1916; seven portraits including one of a worker holding two bolts several military portraits and an outdoor portrait of a couple in a garden; Eight scenes from Reister's personal life most relating to an automobile trip made with his wife in 1930.

Overall a strong representation of pre-Depression New York with many iconic aspects of the city and its environs represented. Despite his low profile Reister was a proficient professional photographer and the images remain quite attractive and in generally very good to fine condition with a few showing small tears at edges. unknown books

Tintype of Two Men Seated circa 1875-1880
American 1860. 3 ½ x 2 ¼ inches uncased. A striking image featured on p. 79 of David Deitcher's Dear Friends: Photographs of Men Together 1840-1918. Images of men together from the nineteenth century do not necessarily suggest a sexual relationship as Deitcher explains in his book but rather a show of intimacy within the very separated realms of the sexes. A Remarkable Sixth Plate Tintype of Two Union Soldiers Holding Hands
1860. A striking photograph featured on page 89 of David Deitcher's Dear Friends: Photographs of Men Together 1840-1918. "Romantic friendship between American men acquired a different kind of social prestige and meaning within the Civil War. No sooner did young recruits leave the shelter and ties of home and family than they were thrust into mutual dependence care and collective terror of being comrades in arms. Intimate ties were tacitly encouraged as a result of the soldier's need to steel himself for battle to prepare emotionally for the prospect of injury and death and for having to inflict such suffering to others." - Deitcher p. 87. A remarkable image of two young soldiers holding hands. It shows the vulnerability and intimacy described by Deitcher. Provenance: From the collection of gay rights activist and Washington D.C. Councilman Jim Graham. unknown books

Civil War Zouave RegimentsVernacular Photography
An Unusual Outdoor Sixth Plate Tintype of a Zouave Soldier Possibly from New York
New York 1860. An unusual image of a Zouave soldier in an outdoor setting holding a horse. During the Civil War roughly 95 Zouave regiments formed adopting the names uni-forms and sometimes fighting styles of the North African Zouave brigades. The bulk - about 70 of the regiments - fought for the Union cause. We were unable to determine anything else about this soldier though the image was found in a New York estate. New York was home to two of the most famous Zouave brigades the 5th New York Volunteer Infantry and the 11th New York Volunteer In-fantry. A nearly fine image with a slight crease housed in a full case. unknown books

1932. PHOTOGRAPHY Imada KINGO editor. HANZAI KAGAKU Vol.3 #7 1932 JUNE. Published in Tôkyô by Bukyôsha. 8vo. size printed wrappers. This magazine was only published for a short time though it managed to include stories by important literary figures wonderful photomontage and avant garde photo foldouts strange erotica tales of urban life reports on "sexual life among the proletariat" etc. etc. Under the broad rubric of "ero-guro nonsensu" the literary and artistic scenes of pre-War Japan as embodied here in CRIMINOLOGY MAGAZINE explored the margins. This is the seventh number of the third year of its publication. As might be expected the editor Imada Kingo was a multitalented writer and artist both who became best known for his children's stories. With wear at the tail of the spine else very good. PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM WITH IMAGES OF THE 1927 SHANGHAI MASSACRE
A photographic album with more than 165 images of people and locations in Asia created by a young Dutch chef serving on a merchant ship in the mid 1920s. Notably the album includes two photographs taken on the streets of Shanghai at the time of the 1927 massacre. The presumed creator of the album appears in many of the photographs and is identified in several captions as a chef. In one image he is shown killing a chicken while other photographs show him working in the kitchen onboard ship. The album contains a wide variety of images from his travels mainly centered around Bali ranging from farmers in the rice fields to waterfalls and temples. Notably there are two photographs with extensive captions in Dutch on the verso concerning the conflict in Shanghai. One shows a bustling street scene while the second shows armed soldiers hunkered down behind sandbag barricades. The Shanghai Massacre of April 12 1927 was a violent suppression of organizations affiliated with the Communist Party of China by the military forces of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek and conservative factions in the Kuomintang Nationalist Party. Hundreds of communists were rounded up arrested and tortured; most were executed. The album also contains a variety of curious images including a Charlie Chaplin impersonator surrounded by a group of children ice and snow covering the deck of the ship "winter in Yokohama Japan" and a series showing a small water plane that appears to have sunk. Most of the black and white photographs are captioned in white on the gray paper album leaves and have extensive holographic captions written in Dutch on the verso. The photographs vary in size but are generally 4 1/2" x 5". Several dozen are secured with photo corners but the vast majority are pasted into the album with a few laid in loose. The brown paper album is secured with a silk yellow string tie. unknown books

VOYEURISTIC IMAGES OF A NEW YORK NUDE BEACH
1979. A collection of approximately 1000 color snapshots taken by an unknown photographer at a New York nude beach in August and September 1979 and June and July 1980. The 5" x 3 1/2" photos are printed on Kodak paper and include the date imprinted on the verso. This collection of images has a voyeuristic quality. The photographer captures personal moments such as a series showing a young woman shyly disrobing. Another group of images appear to show a bikini clad woman publicly fondling her nude male partner's penis. Several others appear to show a man sliding his hand between his nude female partner's thighs. There are numerous close ups of vaginas and the photographer captures shots of several women from the rear when they are bending over. The vast majority of the images are of women sunbathing applying suntan lotion playing in the waves tossing a frisbee and talking with friends. One grouping has a more familiar quality between subject and photographer. The women in these images who appear to be lesbians showing affection for one another pose for numerous photos. This beach appears to be Jacob Riis Beach in Queens New York City's unofficial nude beach as well as a legendary LGBTQ-friendly gathering place. In one image the bath house with its twin art deco spires can be seen in the background. The sand is populated by hundreds of people of all ages who are openly nude. A few photos show a police officer on horseback patrolling the beach. According to a New York Daily News report from August 26 1980 police made 107 arrests on charges of public lewdness at the beach since May 26. "The arrests this summer include charges of public masturbation sodomy and manipulation of private parts by those who sunbathe in the nude" the newspaper reported. According to a 1979 report from the New York Times about nude beaches the acceptance and proclivity of them seems to be in a state of flux tolerated in some communities and outlawed in others. At this time California had the greatest concentration of nude beaches while New York's cities and towns set out their own local rules. Police officials at Fire Island in New York wrote tickets to nude sunbathers along the Islip portion of the beach but not in Brookhaven Town where nude sunbathing was legal. Overall the photographs carry a light musty smell as if stored in a damp space. A handful have old photo corners attached suggesting they were once housed in an album; otherwise the images are in very good condition and help to illustrate the changing social mores related to publicly nudity. unknown books

Carte de visite photograph of Frances Coryell here spelled Coryel "a Hindoo girl buried alive by her heathen parents" sold to raise funds for the Women's Foreign Missionary Society. The Woman's Foreign Missionary Society was a Protestant woman's missionary organization founded by Methodists in Boston in 1869. The story of Frances Coryell raised in an orphanage nursed by a goat now learning to sing hymns is told on the back of the card by Clementina Butler a missionary to India and zealous supporter of the Society. By 1870 a woman in Ithaca NY had taken up Frances's cause and was paying for her education. Although you could purchase one for 25 cents in 1869 we have been unable to locate any other example of this card. books

Cassandre A. M. Adolphe Mouron Cassandre illustrator and designer. Typography: Maurice Frederic. Photography: Rene Message
Parfums Lucien Lelong
Paris: Agence Générale de Publicité et de PropagandePrinter: E. Desfosses. Wraps. Brochure. Near Fine. N.d. circa 1930. 8vo. 24.5 by 18.5 cm. Unpaginated 31 leaves all of a weighty card stock or over 60 pages about half with color plates we count 31 but one can quibble about whether one or two of them so qualify. Eleven of these are non-product illustrations -- attempts to capture concepts or abstractions -- the balance being exquisite depictions of the company's fine perfume bottles. The catalogue exudes an unalloyed dreamy luxury in every respects as befits high-end perfume marketing. Cassandre a name adopted by the Ukrainian-born Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron 1901-1968 -- his parents were French -- was a highly celebrated commercial artist theatrical designer magazine illustrator and poster artist. He worked heavily with the prestige printer Draeger as well as the couturier Lucien Lelong and others. In time he was awarded the French Legion of Honor. Lelong was a top Parisian couturier from the twenties til his retirement in the late forties. He was himself not a designer but rather relied on a stable of designers and among his proteges was Christian Dior. As this catalogue also shows dress designers were branching out into fragrances for a long time; this catalogue predates the creation of Chanel No. 5 by a few years. Light wear to the wraps -- a minor closed tear along the upper joint and some minor wrinkling or creasing to the cover paper. Otherwise clean and fresh.

Agence Générale de Publicité et de PropagandePrinter: E. Desfosses. paperback books

Mazursky Paul aka Irwin Mazursky; Alan Pappe photography; Betsy Mazursky Sesame and Don Buckner
Album of Paul Mazursky photos and related ephemera from Paul and Betsy Mazursky to Don and Sesame Buchner
Beverly Hills and Desert Hot Springs 1990. White leatherette three-ring binder photo album holding thirty-one sheets containing sixty photos mostly b&w 8x10 professional shots and film stills but also many candid b&w and color shots three contact sheets of Mazursky as an actor in various costumes from around 1961-62. Also laid in are five paper documents including an American Film cover a special screening invitation for "Moscow on the Hudson" and most interestingly his Varsity Masquers Kayfer Award for supporting actor for the 1949-50 season. Many of the photos in the album are by Alan Pappe several with his signature and date at bottom. The photos are mounted on self-adhesive backing. Thus they are well-preserved but would be difficult to remove. One depicting Donald Sutherland and Mazursky on the "Alex in Wonderland" shoot has large corner chips as if someone attempted to clumsily remove the photo from the page. Light wear and soiling to the binder several blank sheets at the end. Also included are 38 handwritten postcards from the Mazurskys to the Buchners almost all written by Betsy and signed by her or as "Betsy and Paul" or "The Mazurskys." Content is mostly your average friendly greetings and catching up on family activities. Also included are several cards from other artist friends and one handwritten letter from Richard and Pandora Lupino related to Ida Lupino signed by him and his wife Pandora a wedding invitation for the marriage of the Mazurskys' daughter Meg Purdy and a few film-related publicity pieces. Finally a 9x13.5 inch b&w studio portrait of Paul Mazursky from 1970 signed by Pappe with his studio stamp on rear loose rather worn. Finally Paul mazursky's autobiography "Show Me the Magic" cocked and well-read but a first edition with warm lengthy inscription signed by the filmmaker and a signed inscribed card laid-in. The photo album is a wonderful visual history of Mazursky's career from his Varsity days and appearance in "The Blackboard Jungle" through the 1980s with "The Tempest" "Moscow on the Hudson" "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" and other activities as late as 2003. One shot breaks this bibliographer's heart: Jill Clayburghe Paul Mazursky Robin Williams and Raul Julia - all gone now. unknown books
