Paris Photography Brassai.
The Secret Paris of the 30's.

New York:: Pantheon 1976. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine copy in a Near Fine dust jacket with just a touch of edge wear. The Secret Paris of the '30s is one of the most evocative photographic memoirs ever published. For years it was known that Brassai had taken a series of 'secret photographs' which could not be published because of their daring nature. Alone or in the company of friends he discovered the forbidden Paris of the 1930s - its brothels whores pimps and opium dens - the sordid yet bewitching bas-monde where high society mingled with the underworld. Brassai's photographs reveal a milieu previously known only through books such as the novels of Henry Miller a frequent companion on his nocturnal rambles: the seamy grimy yet infinitely exciting reality that tourists still think of when they seek 'Paris by night'. These fascinating images are accompanied by Brassai's own text in which he describes the extraordinary conditions under which he took his photographs.
Pantheon, hardcover

PICASSO, Pablo; HALASZ, Gyula; BRASSAI.
Un apres-midi avec Picasso 85 ans. An Afternoon with Picasso at 85.
Cannes 1966. Unpublished and heavily corrected manuscript of Brassai's account of his visit to Picasso A superb unpublished and heavily corrected manuscript in French in which Brassaï recounts his visit to Picasso a long-standing friend at his home near Cannes. Brassaï who photographed much of Picasso's work in the 1940s had published Conversations with Picasso in 1964 in which he created an intimate portrait of Picasso covering their friendship and artistic collaboration and recording each of their meetings with minute detail. Picasso said of the volume "Read this book if you want to understand me". This account is written in a similar style and during the course of the afternoon Picasso speaks about his nostalgia for his old studios his health his enthusiasm for the recently invented felt-tip pen his opinion of his own writings his relationship with his wife Jacqueline and his views on feminism. Though unmarked as such it is from the collection of Brassaï's close friend and colleague photographer Stefan Lorant who founded Picture Post the pioneering pictorial magazine. Quarto 285 x 233. 20 typed sheets in French rectos only legibly hand-corrected throughout by Brassai in black ink. Housed in a black cloth album with each sheet in a separate clear plastic file. In excellent condition the final page a little creased and with minor loss to right-hand side affecting one letter. Overall fresh and clean. hardcover
