‎Brohan, Augustine, French actress (1824-1893).‎

‎Autograph letter signed. [Paris, 25 Jan. 1851].‎

‎12mo. 2½ pp. on bifolium. Together with a letter of an unidentified sender. Concerning the premiere of Brohan's play "Les Métamorphoses de l'amour" at the salon of Sophie de Castellane, Comtesse de Beaulaincourt de Marles, on 25 January 1851. Brohan downplays the significance of the premiere that evening, as it is "for the benefit of nobody because only friends - not even mine are invited to it". She renews a promise to the unidentified recipient that if the play were ever to be performed on a theatrical stage, it would be only for her: "C’est à peine chère Madame, si j’en le tems de vous écrire un mot. - Brohan's comedy in one act "Les Métamorphoses de l'amour" was published in 1851 in Paris. - Slightly creased.‎

‎BROMFIELD, John (1922-2005)‎

‎Inscribed Photograph Signed‎

‎The handsome leading man is best remembered for television's "The Sheriff of Cochise" 1956-60 retitled "U.S. Marshal" though he also appeared in some Westerns and the 3D horror film "Revenge of the Creature." Stunning glossy IPS heavy stock 16" X 20" Chicago IL 1961 March 18. Near fine. Handsome half-length portrait of this he-man in his sheriff's getup leaning against a saddle and gazing soulfully at the viewer. In the large blank area at upper right he signed and inscribes large and bold in blue ballpoint: "To My Good Friend / Donald M. Burnell -- / Kindest Regards and Lots / of Luck -- / From / John Bromfield / U.S. Marshal / March 18 1961 / Amphitheatre -- Chicago." Ink adhesion begins quite strong though his pen began "spotting" or "dotting" during the last few lines -- still even those lines are easily legible. This incredibly attractive oversize item was likely created for some promotional purpose but it bears no photographer's credit or other markings recto or verso. Choice vintage piece signed just after the show's demise -- the pose is known though it's likely one of a kind in this format. Stunning for display. unknown‎

‎Bromfield, Louis, American writer (1896-1956).‎

‎2 autograph letters signed. [Paris, December 1935].‎

‎8vo. Together 3 pp. on 2 leaves. With autograph envelope. To the writer and publisher Maurice Delamain (1883-1974) about his rather boring but very productive summer, mentioning the writer Martin Roger du Gard, who praised two of his novels, and concluding with a lunch invitation: "This is just a line to say that I am still alive and to ask news of publishing plans. Also I am enclosing a note to Martin Roger du Gard. Will you please forward it to him? He wrote me a charming note about Vingt Quatre Heures et Hors la Famille. As you know I had my parents with me all summer and so was unable to go anywhere. And in addition I have been working very hard - two novelettes and the greater part of a very long novel which takes place in India. It will be published in England, America and Sweden in the late spring or early autumn. I hope you have both been well. I have been leading a very dull life save for a two week trip to England mostly concerned with business. I do want to see you again. Could you both come to lunch on Friday next? [...]". - To the same, in French, cancelling their meeting on Wednesday, as he needs to be in Paris to meet a sick friend arriving on train from Le Havre, suggesting lunch on Friday instead: "Quand je vous ai parlé justement j'ai oublié qu'il fait être à Paris Mercredi pour rencontrer le train [...] du Havre, parceque j'ai un très grand ami souffrant qui arrive. Alors, cela derange tout encore. Pouvez dejeuner au vendredi [...]". - Both letters on headed stationery of the Presbyterie St Etienne. With stamps of the Librairie Stock in Paris.‎

‎Brommy, Karl Rudolf, Marineoffizier und Konteradmiral (1804-1860).‎

‎Eigenh. Brief mit U. Kiel, 19. VII. 1850.‎

‎1½ SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-4to.

‎BROOKS, George S (1895-?)‎

‎Typed Letter Signed / Inscribed Photograph Signed‎

‎American editor author and playwright well known for his many "Saturday Evening Post" appearances. TLS 1p 8¼" X 11" Groton NY 1956 October 5. Addressed to George Gianetti. Very good. Bit of wear; minor tape stains on verso. Delightful note to an admirer: "While I hope you live as long as I have and longer I hope you won't get as beat-up looking and feeling. There must be some way of avoiding it if you begin young. some 20 years ago a magazine editor friend of mine asked me for a photo to run with some advertising. I sent him the best I had. Then he wrote back. asking me if I didn't have one with hair on. Since I was bald before I ever met him I decided to really surprise him. So I went to a photographer and had a picture made with hair on my head. Around the Saturday Evening Post editorial rooms this was considered rather funny. here is one of them. Like the girl who wasn't named Miss America I wish I were better looking." Bold full signature. Accompanied by the aforementioned photograph: IPS 10" X 8" n.p. n.y. Very good. Absolutely delightful closeup of a very bald Brooks in pullover sweater and tie at the right facing left and looking into a small wall mirror which faces the photo's viewer -- in which Brooks' reflection WITH A FULL HEAD OF HAIR gazes out! A superb example of dark room trickery. In a light area of his sweater at the photo's lower right he boldly inscribes and signs in black ink: "For / George Gianetti / with my best wishes / Geo S Brooks." The most fun and unusual signed photograph we've ever handled -- and we've handled a great many. unknown‎

‎Brossard Le Grand (Monique)‎

‎Mourir dans l'amour.‎

‎français In-8 de 205 pp.; broché de l'éditeur. Bel envoi autographe signé de l'auteure en marge du faux-titre.‎

‎Brossard, Chandler, American novelist, writer, editor, and teacher (1922-1993).‎

‎5 autograph letters signed and 6 typescript letters signed. [New York, ca. 1953].‎

‎4to and 8vo. Together 10½ pp. on 3 bifolia and 8 single sheets. The ALS in pen and pencil. With typescript envelope. Amicable letters to the French artist and writer Boris Vian (1920-59) about his literary career, from which he struggled to make a living, as well as family affairs and Vian's writing. - Several letters mention a piece on the Maginot Line which Vian was doing for the US magazine "Reporter", where Brossard worked as a journalist: "There is a lot of European stuff they are interested in and maybe you could do it. Namely, they are very interested in seeing a piece on the Maginot Line revisited [...] What is happening with the Line now, are people living in it, has it been dismantled, have the rats taken over, and so on. It would be a semi symbolic visit, as though you were visiting an idea about life you held as a child and found, in the adult world, that is was totally impracticable [...]". - Having left the "Reporter", he refocuses on his novels, expressing confidence that Vian's 1946 crime novel "I Spit on Your Graves" would be a huge success in the U.S.: "Forget the Maginot Line piece. I'm no longer working for the Reporter. Hope the whole thing did not upset you [...] My novel - published about 4 weeks ago - is slowly selling but will not make me any dough. Meanwhile I am trying to write a sexxy little novel under a different name - maybe Vernon Sullivan! - to make some money. My second novel ["The Bold Saboteurs", 1953] is all finished, on it I will stand or fall as a writer up to now [...] would you ask [Raymond] Queneau how he feels about the second novel [...] please send me another copy of I shall spit on your graves [...] I want to turn it over to my agent, who is the best in New York. I am positive it would sell like crazy here [...] My personal life stinks, as usual. But that is my destiny at the moment. My child, however, is very rewarding. A completely adorable beast [...]". - Hoping to score a secure job with the international broadcaster "Voice of America" funded by the U.S. Congress: "I am trying now to get a big job in the government, in the Voice of America. It would pay well, about $10,000 a year, and if they hire me they would want to send me to Europe for a couple of years. I go to Washington D.C. this week to see if my family can pull some wires in the government [and] use some influence on my behalf. It is too hard and too nerve wracking to try to make a full time living as a writer or an editor [...]". - About his financial situation and literary productivity: "I have a new novel coming out in the spring [...] It was just sold to the reprint people [...] for $7500. This is what we're living on. I have begun a third novel, called The Double Dealers [...]" (no such novel was published; Brossard's third novel was titled "All Passion Spent"; his fifth novel is titled "The Double View"). - About his family's difficult situation: "Very little new with me worth talking about, lots of minor bad luck - wife broke her ankle, then we found out she was pregnant, so had to have an abortion, which took all the money I had left. Still waiting on a job. Sent Queneau the rest of my second novel, but have not heard from him [...]". - Wondering about Sartre's intentions to publish two works: "The next time you see Queneau would you ask him if Jean Paul Sartre is going to publish those 2 stories [...]". - A few tiny marginal flaws; small portion of one letter torn, not affecting text.‎

‎BROWN, Edward Scott "Ted" (1876-1942)‎

‎Signature‎

‎This American cartoonist supposedly created more than 24 comic strips including "The Inventor" which ran from 1904 to 1914 and assisted with four others; one cartooning historian describes him as "an absolute whirling dervish at the drawing board producing more material for the daily pages than anyone except the great George Frink'; he worked for the "Chicago Daily News" ca. 1908-24 and the "New York Herald-Tribune" 1925-42. On a heavy stock 5" X 3" card the cartoonist pens "Sincerely yours" and signs in cursive adding his cartoonist's printed stylized "T. Brown" alongside. Very good. Faintly age toned with mounting traces on verso. Along the bottom edge is typed "Cartoonist 'Chicago Daily News'. / April 29 1922." Very uncommon. unknown‎

‎BROWN, Joe E (1892-1973)‎

‎Signature and Inscription / Unsigned Photograph‎

‎American huge-grinned comedian and actor often remembered for his hilarious portrayal of millionaire Osgood Fielding III in "Some Like It Hot" 1959. Huge and bold "All good wishes to my friend / Donald Burnell / Joe E. Brown / 6/22/60" in blue ballpoint on an irregular-trimmed roughly-triangular 5¼" width at top X 4" height slip bearing "JOE E. BROWN" printed in green at the top -- presumably trimmed from a sheet of his letterhead. Very good. Other than odd shape quite handsome. Accompanied by a superb vintage sepia-tone heavy stock 5" X 7" matte-finish photograph bearing a preprinted signature and inscription at the bottom -- a head-and-shoulders portrait of a smiling young Brown as he appeared in the 1930s the kind of image sent out by the studios in bulk at the time in response to fan mail. A charming pair. unknown‎
