Hektographiertes Manuskript des namentlich nicht identifizierten Oberleiters der Wiener Hoftheater, der gleichsam am Vorabend der Eröffnung des von Semper und Hasenauer geplanten und im Jahr darauf eröffneten Neubaus am Ring in sorgfältig abgewägtem Für und Wider detailliert Kosten und Einnahmen der beiden vorhandenen Hoftheater in Beziehung zu einem projektierten dritten setzt. “Meine Wahrnehmungen und Erfahrungen innerhalb der achtzehn Monate, während denen ich nunmehr mit der Oberleitung der Wiener Hoftheater betraut bin, haben in mir die Überzeugung befestigt, das aus Gründen, welche ich in meinem Bericht über die Gebarung des abgelaufenen Jahres entwickelt habe, ein Deficit nur durch das zufällige Zusammenwirken vieler günstiger Umstände vermieden werden kann, und daß, wenn solche günstigen Zufälle ausbleiben, die Hoftheater u. zw. ebensowo[h]l das Operntheater, wie nach der Übersiedelung in das mit weit kostspieligerigem Betriebe verbundene neue Haus, das Burgtheater unter gravierenden [?] Betriebsabgängen zu leiden haben werde [...] Von diesen Überlegungen geleitet, habe ich die Errichtung einesdritten Hoftheaters mit der ausdrückliche Bestimmung, vorzugsweise den minder bemittelten Classen zu dienen, beantragt. Ich muß bedauern, daß ich mit diesem Antrage, dessen Grundidee mich schon bald nach meinem Amtsantritte beschäftigt hatte, der nach allen Seiten sorgfältig durchdacht, geprüft und überlegt worden ist, gerade in dem Augenblicke hervorgetreten bin, als von anderer Seite der Plan für ein Volkstheater aufgetaucht ist [...]”. - Bl. 1 an den Rändern etwas angestaubt, sonst in gutem Erhaltungszustand.

VI. 1964). In der Erwartung, Hupperts Werk "Münzen im Brunnen" zu erhalten, und mit Komplimenten: "Dein Aufsatz über die Kasmader hat mir helle Freude bereitet. Sept. 1920); ALS by the writer Georges Marlow (1872-1947) (Brussels, 19 Oct. 1926); ALS by the Marxist writer Charles Plisnier (1896-1952) (Saint-Germain-en-Laye, 30 June 1937); TLS by the Walloon politician Louis Piérard (1886-1951) (Brussels, 25 Nov 1945, with a few addenda). - A member of the Belgian Workers' Party, Hénault in June 1900 founded "Le Réveil des Travailleurs", a newspaper with anarcho-communist tendencies which had up to 1,200 subscribers. He contributed to "Le Libertaire" and "L’Effort écletique"; in 1901 he was expelled from the Workers' Party for publishing his possibly best-known work the pamphlet, "Le Parti ouvrier et l’Anarchie" (Fauvel-Rouif 73). In April that same year he apparently took part in the anarchist congress held in Brussels, which brought together around thirty delegates, including Chapelier, Mestag and Peuchot. Hénault emigrated to Brazil in 1902 and remained there for three years. After his return to Belgium he became head of service at the Hôpital de Saint-Gilles in Brussels. While still an anarchist, he was then mainly active in the Free Thought movement. In 1911 Hénault became secretary of the "Amis de l’Orphelinat rationaliste" and published the magazine of this association, "L'École franchisee", which appeared from September 1913 until his death. B.: brauner Storchenschnabel, Alpen-Aster, Heidekräuter), und ornamentalisierenden figurativen Darstellungen (4 Bilder, z. B.: Flötenspieler, "Denckmahl", Handelsschiff mit Insel-Landschaft) teilweise in Lochtechnik mit winzigen eng aneinander gesetzten Perforierungen, gliedern. Insgesamt vier Urheber unterzeichnen: Friedrich Huber (1. V. 1816), Shakespeare Boyes ("Auch wenn ich nicht mehr hier sein werde erinnere Dich zuweilen meiner [...]", 30. V. 1850), C. Werner (3. General Toshizo Nishio (1881-1960) was considered one of the most successful and ablest strategists of the Imperial Japanese Army. His card is postmarked 5 Sept. 1934. Kichisaburo Nomura (1877-1964), another former Imperial admiral, served as ambassador to the United States at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. His signature is dated 9 April 1941, eight months before that event, and is accompanied by a TLS cover letter by the Secretary to the Ambassador. Also included is a TLS from Goro Sakale, son of General Gaishi Nagaoka (1858-1933), who informs Zorrilla that his father, to whom the collector had applied for an autograph, passed away on the 23rd of April.

Altogether (1+1 =) 2 pp. 4to and 8vo. Rare testimony of the first Jewish-Arab dispute over the Western Wall in 1920, the letter signed by A. L. Yehudah of the Hebrew Palestine Exploration Fund requests additional security at the Wall to prevent the Arabs from continuing their repair works following a government decree. The Jews, while agreeing that the works were necessary, appealed to the British that they be made under supervision of the newly formed Department of Antiquities, because the Wall was an ancient relic. On headed stationery (17 May 1920). - Autograph letter signed by the Israeli artist Abel Pann, undertaking to employ Kurt Meier as a lithographer in the Bezalel University College of Art (12 June 1924). - Perforated; with small marginal flaws.

Italian manuscript on paper. 3½ pp. Rare manuscript of an anonymous report of the martyrdom of the Blessed Baltasar de Torres Arrias (1563-1626), who was burned at the stake in Nagasaki on 20 June 1626 together with eight other Jesuits. The report is largely based on a letter that Baltasar de Torres had managed to write during his imprisonment in Omura. It repeats details from the letter such as description of Torres's diet in prison, which consisted of "rice, a broth with herbs, and a cured sardine". The other "authentic writings" from Japan that are alluded to in the title of the manuscript have not been identified. The earliest known publication of Torres's letter with an extensive description of his martyrdom is in Juan Eusebio Nieremberg's "Vidas exemplares" (vol. 4 [1647], pp. 559-572). The manuscript at hand is not based on Nieremberg's version, as it wrongly states the 21st of June 1626 as the day of the executions. This grave error points to an earlier source, as the date would have certainly been corrected based on Nieremberg's widely read martyrology. - Torres had defied the Japanese ban on all Christian missonaries in 1614 and was among the Jesuits who took refuge in Osaka castle until its capture in 1615. He continued his work as a missionary and provincial of northern and central Japan in secrecy for more than another decade. In 1626, Baltasar de Torres was finally arrested near Nagasaki and imprisoned in nearby Omura. His Japanese catechist, the Blessed Michael Tozó (ca. 1588-1626), soon followed Torres to prison. On 12 June 1626 the governor of Nagasaki returned from the court in Kyoto with a death sentence for all Jesuit prisoners. For their execution in Nagasaki, Baltasar de Torres and Michael Tozó were joined by seven Jesuits who had been imprisoned in Shimbara, including the Blessed Francisco Pacheco (1566-1626), the provincial general for Japan alluded to in the title, and the Blessed Gianbattista Zola. - With a large old waterstain throughout and several deep tears partly affecting the text (without loss).

Breve ragguaglio delle virtù, e morte del Pre Christoforo Storani della Comp.a di Giesù. N. p., first half of the 18th century.
4to. Italian manuscript on paper. 19 pp. Life of Cristoforo Storani (1682-1733), a Jesuit of noble birth from Ancona who served as rector of the Collegium Ragusianum (Dubrovnik) from 1719 to 1721. During his term, the later Jesuit priest and polymath Rugjer Josip (Roger Joseph) Boscovich studied at the Collegium Ragusianum. - As is typical for the genre, the text traces the biography of the recently deceased brother in broad strokes, focusing on his character, virtues, events of religious relevance, and death. We learn that even when he was among brothers who slept in beds, Storani always "put his mattress on the floor" and took his rest "without sheets or duvets", although he slept only little and spent "the better part of the night reading and studying". To preserve his "angelic chastity", Storani "never looked a woman in the face" and never visited women "except for taking confession". Ahead of his death on 18 April 1733, Storani was called to Rome to accompany the "Maestro dei Novizi". The Superior General Franz Retz and other important Jesuits were present at his deathbed and assisted in his last rites. The vita closes with the immediate aftermath of Storani's death and the veneration bestowed upon him. The mourners entered Storani's room "as if they entered the room of a saint", while a Jesuit who learned of his death exclaimed, "Saint Christopher pray for us". - With very slight damage due to ink corrosion and old water stains. Eulogies for Paolo Segneri and Francesco Maria Galluzzi. N. p., first half of the 18th century.
4to. Italian manuscript on paper. 2 pp. on a single leaf. Typical short Jesuit eulogies, composed to be read in Jesuit colleges on the anniversaries of the deceased. - Paolo Segneri the elder (1624-94) was a highly popular orator, ascetical writer, and preacher of the Apostolic Palace. According to the eulogy, Pope Innocent XII and Cardinal Giovanni Francesco Albani, the later Pope Clement XI, held Segneri in high esteem. Francesco Maria Galluzzi (1671-1731) was a Jesuit preacher, hagiographer, and teacher at the Collegio Romano. For most of his life, Galluzzi led the Jesuit "Missione Urbana" in Rome that focused on the evangelization and catechesis of farmers and others who visited the markets of Rome. This work earned Galluzzi the epithet "Apostle of Rome". - Some browning.

4to. Italian manuscript on paper. 1 p. on bifolium. Typical short Jesuit eulogy, composed to be read in Jesuit colleges on the anniversary of Ramos's death. The text was sent as a letter to the Jesuit Girolamo Mattia at the College of Recanati (Marche). - Francisco Ramos was a Jesuit in Carmona near Seville who died at only 28 years of age, "after a long and painful sickness", on 23 June 1719. Ramos is lauded as a powerful preacher and, according to the eulogy, his singular modesty earned him the general reputation as "another Saint Luigi Gonzaga", a Jesuit saint who died of the plague in Rome at an even younger age than Ramos. To recommend Ramos for beatification, the eulogy reports the vision of a nun in the moment of his passing: "In the moment of his death he was seen by a nun of well known virtue and far away from Carmona gloriously entering Paradise". - With a tear from breaking the seal, minor tears and browning.

Eulogy for the Bohemian Jesuit Franz Retz. N. p., first half of the 18th century.
4to. Italian manuscript on paper. 1 p. and 4 lines. Typical short Jesuit eulogy, composed to be read in Jesuit colleges on the anniversary of Retz's death. Franz Retz (1673-1750) served as the 15th Superior General of the Society of Jesus from 1730 until his death. Before he was called to Rome in 1725 to become assistant for Central European affairs to his predecessor Michelangelo Tamburini, Retz had served as Provincial of Bohemia (1718-20) and as Rector of the important Jesuit College of Prague (1720-23). The eulogy traces his life and emphasizes Retz's "renowned humility, rare modesty, and admirable placidity". With respect to his term as Superior General, Retz is lauded for promoting "with all his might the holy mission in all parts of the world", for achieving the canonization of Jean François Régis in 1737, but also for finding "many hours to spend with religious exercises" every day despite his many occupations. To recommend Retz for beatification, the eulogy states that at the moment of his death after "a long and painful sickness" his "happy passage to a better life" was "supernaturally shown to one of us in Germany". - With several tears to the somewhat brittle right margin and minor damage due to ink corrosion.

The text was sent as a letter to the Jesuit Annibale Magnalbo at the College of Recanati (Marche). - Francisco del Castillo (1615-73) was a Chilean-born Jesuit in the Viceroyalty of Peru. His preaching and evangelization work among African slaves in Peru earned him the epithet "Apostle of Lima". The text lauds del Castillo as the "communal father of the poor, the imprisoned, the sick, and finally of all of the most miserable in the city". To recommend del Castillo for beatification, the eulogy states that he died on the day he had predicted and that "his death was accompanied by miracles", such as a miraculous delay of decomposition. - With a tear from breaking the seal. Well preserved.
