"Ich vernehme, dass Ew Hochedelgebohren nächstens eine theatralische Reise zu unternehmen gedenken, und Mannheim besuchen werden; es sollte mir angenehm seyn, wenn es ihr Wunsch wäre, einige Gastrollen auf hiesigem Curfürstlichen Theater zu spielen, wozu ich Sie hiermit einlade […] Sollte aber Ihre Reise bloß die Absicht haben, (wie vielleicht irrig verlautet) gute Subjecte von der hiesigen Bühne hinweg zu engagieren, so sehe ich mich, vermöge meiner Stelle genöthigt, Ewr Hochwohlgebohren, zu Erspahrung einer vergebenen Reise, folgendes zu erörtern. ‚Sämtliche Mitglieder des hiesigen Cur-fürstlichen Hoftheaters, sind ohne Ausnahme alle bis zu Ende des 1791en Jahres, […] hier engagiert […]". - Seit 1776 pfälzischer Geheimrat sowie Präsident des Oberappellationsgerichts, gründete Dalberg 1778 im Auftrag des Kurfürsten Karl Theodor von der Pfalz ein deutsches Nationaltheater in Mannheim. Dalberg engagierte die Truppe des Prinzipals Abel Seyler, die Freunde Heinrich Beck, Johann David Beil und August Wilhelm Iffland aus Gotha, gewann Friedrich Ludwig Schröder 1780 für ein Gastspiel und übernahm 1781 selbst die künstlerische Leitung des organisatorisch am Wiener Vorbild orientierten Nationaltheaters.

Dale's wife has passed away, and he himself has moved back to his native Weston-super-Mare: "At long-last I have 'got-down' to do that which I have not once but a dozen times wished, attempted ... yes, actually started to do ... To send you a line. Now, it is I read (in the 'Evening World', which seems to claim you as a bit o' property!) of MARY. THAT settled it ... there is a wee ditty in my very overstacked folio, that very truly belongs to MARY ... so I, at long-last again, send it. You are going to laugh at this. What I remember most o' you (& I remember, gladly, 'quite' a bit') is a meeting on the Cornish Cliffs & the three words 'THIS IS MARY' when 'presenting' the little maid to me [...] My doctor told me - in 1921 - it was either 'OOT O' LONDON' or 'CEMETARY' for me - NERVES. So, I, not being over keen about cemetaries, came down HERE. I rarely see Weston. I just DON'T LIKE ... That's all [...]". - With embossed letterheads. First leaf slightly yellowed.

This English educator and author served as principal of University College in Liverpool 1899-1903 and long-time vice-chancellor at the University of Liverpool 1903-19; in 1903 he revised and edited a history of English Congregationalism written by his father the noted Congregationalist church leader Robert William Dale. TLS 1p 7" X 9" Liverpool England 7 November 1908. Addressed to Reverend Oliver Huckel 1864-1940 American Congregationalist clergyman and author. Very good. Faint original folds; mounting traces on verso. On University of Liverpool letterhead Dale discusses some cryptic but clearly delicate issue regarding his and Huckel's mutual friend the noted Scottish theologian P.T. Forsyth 1848-1921. In part ".the Council and Educational Board of Mansfield College. came to no final decision so your judgment will still be in time to help us. I fully appreciate all that you say of Forsyth who is a close friend of mine and was a neighbour for many years; but we cannot run the risk of moving a man of his age to Oxford to begin new work under totally new conditions. He has never been a strong man physically." Boldly signed. Most interesting -- Forsyth had preached at Mansfield College in January 1908 but what the sensitive issue under discussion here is unclear. unknown

To a friend with compliments on his article in Time Magazine, and offering him a chance to photograph his famous painting "Assumpta Corpuscularia Lapislazulina", a work of his "corpuscular" period which he considers historic and explosive, that is scheduled to be exhibited in New York at the end of the year: "Querido Amigo - Su noticia en Time muy brillante - A fines de Octubre se podra fotog[r]afiar mi 'Asomcion de la virgen' que sera expuesto fines de Diciembre en Nuewa York. Creo una oportunidad unica ya que es un cuadro 'corpuscular i explosivo' historico en mi vida [...]". Further, announcing a letter by his wife Gala Dalí (1894-1982), wishing her to receive the same treatment as he does: "Si recibieron una comunicación bastante sensacional de mi esposa Gala le ruego que la atienda como a mi mismo [...]". - The "Assumpta" was exhibited at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York in 1952 and commanded a record auction price of 4 million dollars in 1990. - With a small marginal flaw not touching the text.

With calligraphed title and 7 hand-drawn illustrations, comprising a dedication portrait of Marie Louise, Duchess of Parma, her coat of arms on the title-page, 4 scenic designs for the play, and a final vignette with motto. Contemporary giltstamped full calf with pink endpapers. All edges gilt. Beautiful dedication manuscript of Giuseppe dall'Argine's romantic drama that was set to music by count Germano Liberati Tagliaferri (1795-1870) and premiered in 1821 at the Teatro Sanvitale in Parma. Dall'Argine dedicated his play to the ruling Duchess of Parma and second wife of Napoleon, archduchess Marie Louise (1791-1847), who is represented in a fine pen drawing that serves as frontispiece. All illustrations are signed by the author. - This manuscript is probably the only surviving copy of dall'Argine's play. Himself largely forgotten, Giuseppe dall'Argine stems from a leading family of musicians and librettists in Parma, the most prominent members of which were the tenor Luigi dall'Argine (1808-69) and his son Costantino (1842-77), a highly successful composer in his time. Giuseppe dall'Argine is known as the author of another libretto, the comedy "Castello di Valbruno" that was published in Parma in 1825 and again set to music by Germano Liberati Tagliaferri. - Well preserved.

8vo. 1 p. Mounted on larger backing paper. The influential English natural scientist John Dalton is best known today for his work on atomic theory and his contribution to the ideal gas laws. A native of Cumbria, Dalton was also, however, an avid fellwalker who is estimated to have ascended the peak Helvellyn in excess of 40 times over the course of his life. The present autograph is a testimony to Dalton's pleasure in bringing together his passions for science and the great outdoors. It records the "Heights of Mountains in Cumberland, Westmorland, Lancashire and Yorkshire above the level of the sea, taken by barometrical observations" in a list of thirteen peaks and their altitude in feet: "Sca Fell [!] -- 3240; Helvellyn -- 3225; Skiddaw -- 3195; Rydal Head -- 3096; Grasmere [!] (NE. Crummock) -- 2865; Coniston (Old Man) -- 2571; Bow fell (Langdale) -- 3084 ..."). Dalton's work on the heights of the Lakeland fells would be standard until the late-19th century efforts of the Ordnance Survey. - After moving to the city of Manchester to take up a life of teaching and research from the age of 27, Dalton returned regularly to the Lake District during the holidays when he took the opportunity to measure the heights of the mountains as he walked. Earlier in his life, the scientist had perfected to this end the construction of a barometer, which he carried with him to record readings as he went. The best results were obtained from simultaneous pressure readings from a pair of inter-calibrated and temperature-corrected barometers. It was while climbing Skiddaw with his barometer in July 1812 that Dalton first made the acquaintance of the Lake District geologist and guide Jonathan Otley. Otley later accompanied Dalton as a companion and paid guide on many of his climbs between 1812 and 1836. - The well-preserved inventory of fells and altitude measurements is on a single-sided piece of note paper with absolutely minimal damage or marking. The title and list are in Dalton's hand. Two further hands (one in dark ink, a second in pencil) add six words of commentary on the object and its author. The small 8vo page is affixed to a larger sheet. Overall, a splendid piece of evidence for the ongoing scientific interest in the Lake District, which went hand-in-hand with contemporary Romantic idealisation of its landscapes. Cf. D. An den Maler Johann Heinrich Schramm (1810-1865): “Seit Gestern befinden sich [...] die Prinzessin von Bayern sowie [...] die Prinzessin Carl von Hessen, Töchter des Prinzen Wilhelm von Preußen, zum Besuche bei letzterem hier in Mainz. Es könnte vielleicht im Interesse Ew. Wohlgeboren liegen, wenn ich den genannten Damen das Bild meiner Frau zu zeigen imstande wäre, und bitte deshalb, mir dasselbe baldigst zukommen zu lassen [...]”. - Drei Jahre nach diesem Schreiben wurde Dalwigk hessischer Bevollmächtigter auf dem Frankfurter Bundestag; noch im gleichen Jahre Minister des Inneren, bald danach auch des Äußeren und des großherzoglichen Hauses. “Durch mehr als zwanzig Jahre war Dalwigk nun leitender Minister in Hessen bis zu der durch Bismarck 1871 erzwungenen Entlassung. Durchaus konservativ gesinnt, war Dalwigk entschiedener Gegner der Demokratie, der der Revolution von 1848 energisch entgegengetreten war, und einer der hervorragendsten Vorkämpfer des großdeutschen Gedankens und des Föderalismus, dessen Politik in Anlehnung an Österreich aufs schärfste den preußischen Plänen entgegenarbeitete [...]” (RGG I, 1773). - Johann Heinrich Schramm war bekannt für seine tls. in Bleistift, tls. in Aquarell ausgeführten Portraits von berühmten Zeitgenossen, darunter Alexander von Humboldt, Jakob Grimm, Friedrich Rückert, Heinrich Laube, Ludwig Tieck und Clemens Wenzel Fürst Metternich. - In altem Sammlungsumschlag.

Folio. 2 pp. on single leaves. Comprehensive letter to the choreographer and ballet dancer Léonide Massine, director of the "Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo", concerning Dalí's ballett "Tristan Fou". Dalí had started arrangements for "Tristan Fou" with Massine designated for the leading role in 1937. In the letter Dalí refers to "Tristan Fou" as "our spectacle", meaning Massine and him, and justifies the title with Tristan's mad love for Isolde: "Très cher ami: ge deja bocoub trabaille a notre espectacle [...] - Elle s'apellera TRISTAN FOU ge crois que cest un titre assez abile pour le public […] ge pense que les deux noms ensemble son d'un assez gran efet poetique - Mon heubre port du moment ou dans la legende Tristan de bien fou d'amour, l'obsesion du souvenir d'Isolde le devore l'entement jusqua la mort […]". For the characterization of Massine's role as a "mad Tristan" who would be hallucinating and depressed Dalí draws an interesting comparison with the comedian Harpo Marx: "Ge vois en vous un Role etonon, ebluisant du 'Tristan fou' allucine, plonge dans un etat de depresion et aneontisements totals […] un peu dans l'estile d'Arpo Marx […]". An important aspect for Dalí are the costume ideas of the french fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli who also collaborated in the play. She envisaged an overabundance of bobbin lace and rhinestones for Tristan's costume: "vous serez abille entierement dans des grandes dentelles, tres curieusement decoupes une perruque blonde decoife - Schiaparelly trouve tout le temps des idees pour tout magnifiques! Il i aura enormement de bijoux, naturellement des faux bijous!" In the closing paragraphs Dalí announces that he will do the theater placard himself and that he wants to keep the French title in a possible American production, as it would lose "violence and dramatism" in translation: "Ge pense aussi, que [...] ca serai tres importan que ge puisse faire moi meme l'ofiche de Tristan Fou, destine a la publicite - Dans le cas au le titre perdre en 'violonce et dramatisme' une fois traduit en anglais, ge crois que lon pourrai l'aisser le titre en Français meme pour L'amerique […]". - The ballet premiered in 1944 in New York under the title "Mad Tristan". - With some slight tears to the border.
