This newspaper journalist turned novelist and magazine writer authored "Almanzar" 1918 "The Chinese Label" 1920 and "The Road to San Jacinto" 1936 before becoming director of the Texas Writer's Project of the federal Works Project Administration during the Depression in which capacity he largely authored the 1940 "Texas: A Guide to the Lone Star State"; not to be confused with other Texas writers whose names begin with "J. Frank" Dobie Norfleet Norris. Two items: First a TNS 1p 7¼" X 10½" San Antonio Texas 1923 January 9. Addressed to Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work on the subject. Fine. In response to a request for a working manuscript page Davis notes: "The short story whose first page it is was scheduled the last I heard for publication in Hearst's International in the February number which will be out about the twentieth of this month." Boldly signed. Second a TMS 1p 8½" X 11" San Antonio Texas 1923 January. Near fine. Titled "Daniel Five Times" this neat double spaced typescript opens with "Colonel Rebel Lee Singleton whose name places his birth as not later than Reconstruction Days came out through the main doorway of the Federal Building to face across the palm-ornamented expanse of Alamo Plaza and paused on the upper step as he observed a haphazard meeting of friends on the sidewalk below him and not ten yards away." Several small minor pencilled corrections. Across the top he has inscribed and signed boldly in black fountain pen: "For Mr. Albert Johannsen with the good wishes of J. Frank Davis" along with place and date. An attractive and unusual pair. Accompanied by Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. unknown

LP, CBS, italienische Pressung, o. J. (1963). Das Cover an den Rändern mit unbedeutenden Gebrauchsspuren, sonst tadellos erhalten. Das 1962/63 in New York aufgenommene Studioalbum war die vierte und letzte Zusammenarbeit von Miles Davis und Gil Evans und wurde 1964 durch Columbia Records veröffentlicht (Kat.-Nr. CL 2106 and CS 8906). Nachdem in etwas weniger als vier Monaten, vom 27. Juli bis 6. November 1962, lediglich 20 Minuten an verwertbaren Aufnahmen zustandegekommen waren (genug für eine Albumseite, aber nicht für ein ganzes Album), entschloss sich der Produzent Teo Macero, eine Aufnahme des Miles Davis Quintet aus dem Jahr 1963 hinzuzufügen ("Summertime"), um die LP mit zumindest knapp 30 Minuten Spiellänge veröffentlichen zu können. Die Verstimmung zwischen Macero und Davis, der die Veröffentlichung eines Projekts ablehnte, das er als noch unvollendet ansah, sollte knapp zwei Jahre bis zur gemeinsamen Arbeit an "Miles Smiles" andauern. Das knapp über 40 Minuten lange Album wurde dann im Oktober 1966 in nur zwei Tagen eingespielt. - Davis' Unterschrift findet sich auf der Rückseite; auf der Vorderseite unterschrieben Gil Evans, George Coleman, Steve Lacy, Elvin Jones, Bobby Rosengarden, Jimmy Knepper, Jerome Richardson und Ron Carter. Am Innersleeve vermerkte der einstige Autogrammjäger zu jeder Unterschrift, wo und wann er sie erhalten hatte. Dass sich das Cover in fast verlagsfrischem Zustand erhalten hat, ist umso erstaunlicher, als es der Sammler zu insgesamt acht (oder neun) Konzerten mitgenommen hatte (zu Miles Davis' Unterschrift gibt es weder Ort noch Datum).

Davray fut un collectionneur de tableaux — notamment Dans le jardin de Vuillard —, de meubles et d'objets d'art, et un grand bibliophile ; la majeure partie de son importante bibliothèque est dispersée de son vivant, en 1961, le reste après sa mort en 1986 (ainsi que sa collection).

Davy") as President of the Royal Society, to one "Sir", marked "Private & confidential", explaining that, as President, he is unable to interfere in elections, mentioning that Fellows are divided into two classes, "working scientific men" and "Patrons of Science", going on to explain that professional men should offer "some paper or communication which may imply qualification" though "this rule has not been so strictly attended to as it ought to have been". - At this time, a year before Davy gave up the Presidency, the Royal Society was "teetering between remaining a gentleman's club and becoming an academy of science. Davy favoured judicious modernizing [...] He made publication an important factor in election, but, lacking the social status of Banks, he was unable to force his will upon the fellows, and found himself between hostile camps" (David Knight, ODNB). - Two light stains, and some slight damage to edges.

1 S. Kl.-8vo. "Amalien La Roche zur Erinnerung an den Weihnachtsabend 1864". - Bogumil Dawison, der 1849 "als Helden- und Charakterdarsteller (u. a. König Lear) am Wiener Burgtheater Triumphe [gefeiert hatte]" (DBE), verließ 1863 wegen zahlreicher Auseinandersetzungen mit Emil Devrient das Dresdener Hoftheater, dem er seit 1853 angehörte, und bereiste die USA und Deutschland. Über einen seiner Auftritte am Wiener Burgtheater begeisterte sich die zeitgenössische Presse und befand, daß Dawison "mit dem Franz Moor die erste Rolle seiner wirklichen Domäne" erhielt ("Wiener Zeitung", Oktober 1878, zit. n. Haeusserman, Das Wiener Burgtheater, Wien u. a., Molden, 1975, S. 59). - In lithographierter Bordüre.

This British poet father of actor Daniel Day-Lewis penned many verse collections over several decades ranging from his first book "Transitional Poem" 1929 to "A Time to Dance and Other Poems" 1935 "Short Is the Time" 1945 "Pegasus and Other Poems" 1957 "The Gate and Other Poems" 1962 and "The Whispering Root and Other Poems" 1970 meanwhile writing a handful of pseudonymous mystery novels; in 1968 he succeeded John Masefield as Poet Laureate. Bold signature on a 5" X 4" slip n.p. n.y. Near fine. Apparently a portion of a book's half-title page since his name appears in print at upper left. Day-Lewis never hyphenated his last name when signing and once noted "As a writer I do not use the hyphen in my surname - a piece of inverted snobbery which has produced rather mixed results. unknown

[...]". - Mit Siegellackpunkten alt auf Trägerpapier montiert, darauf zwei weitere Autographen von nicht identifizierten Verfassern sowie ein drittes am Trägerpapier selbst. - Insgesamt recht unfrisch.
