Nachdem er sich durch numismatische Fachveröffentlichungen hervorgetan hatte, übernahm er 1910 die Direktion des Münz- und Antikenkabinetts des Kunsthistorischen Museums. Als Schriftsteller dem "Gral"-Kreis um Richard Rt. Kralik von Meyrswalden angehörig, veröffentlichte Domanig Erzählungen, Versepen und heimatverbundene Dramen wie die mehrfach preisgekrönte Trilogie "Der Tiroler Freiheitskampf". - Rabenlechner, als Gymnasialprofessor in Triest und Wien lebend und 1925 als Regierungsrat in den Ruhestand tretend, war Mitbegründer und Vorsitzender der Wiener Bibliophilengesellschaft, veröffentlichte zahlreiche literaturwissenschaftliche Schriften und trat auch als Herausgeber hervor. - Mit gedr. An den Pädagogen und Literarhistoriker Michael Maria Rabenlechner (1868-1952): "Heute komme ich mit einer Bitte. Ich bin, da ich eben eine größere Arbeit in Angriff genommen habe, ganz außer Stande dem in beiliegendem Schreiben ausgedrückten Wunsche zu entsprechen. Wollten nicht Sie die Güte haben, sich dieser an sich ja leichten Arbeit zu unterziehen [...]? Es handelt sich lediglich darum, aus einer Geschichte der Universität Wien ein kurzes lesbares Excerpt (für Couleur-Studenten) herzustellen [...]". - Aus dem beiliegenden Brief Werrs an Domanig vom 14. VII. 1890: "Ich habe die Absicht, die kurz gefaßten Geschichten der Universitäten nach dem Muster jener von Heidelberg in der Academia zu veröffentlichen. Es sollte nun zunächst eine österreichische Universität folgen. Darum ersuche ich Dich recht sehr, eine originelle Geschichte der Universität Wien zu verfassen, die in 3 oder 4 Fortsetzungen aufgenommen werden könnte [...]" (auf Briefpapier mit gedr. Folio and oblong 8vo. Together 1 p. and two lines. With an additional letter to the magistrate of Milan. The documents date to the term of Ferrante I Gonzaga as governor of Milan, who was Alvarez de Luna's direct superior. A note from 7 October 1548 confirms the dispatch of "letters for the governor of Cremona", probably Alvarez de Luna's predecessor. - In a letter from 27 June 1552, de Luna informs Ferrante Gonzaga that he found "the princess" in the thermal baths of the city with improved health, possibly referring to Ferrante's wife Isabella di Capua: "Yo ellegado aqui alos baños a donde e hallado a mo señor la princesa con harta mejoria. A me dado este pliego delantas para que yo lo encamynea [...]". - The letter from 1552 with address and papered seal. The 1552 letter with damage from ink corrosion and a clipped corner in the blank leaf (not affecting the address). Both documents with pinholes. - The additional letter to the magistrate of Milan from 20 December 1547 was written on behalf of the Milanese tax collector Paolo de Cela (folio, 1/3 p. with address and papered seal). A draft of the letter is enclosed. - Several deep tears to the upper and right margins affecting the text; somewhat brittle.

Charenton 1801. Fine. Charenton 1801 15 x 22.80 cm un feuillet composé deux papiers encollés Original autograph letter by the Marquis de Sade consists of 27 lines of relatively tight handwriting. Most likely written to his wife as evidenced by the letter's origin from Sade's family. The letter is physically composed of two glued pieces of paper. On the verso the Marquis wrote 19 lines and scrupulously crossed them out - a few words and letters are still quite visible. Cited in Maurice Lever's biography 'Donatien Alphonse François marquis de Sade' Paris Fayard 1991 p. 631. On March 7 1801 Armand de Sade the Marquis's son received a letter from the Minister of Police Joseph Fouché notifying him that his father had been arrested yesterday and that handwritten pages from the novel 'La nouvelle Justine' Justine or the Misfortunes of Virtue had been found on his person: “Nevertheless sensitive to your request for leniency and concerned to preserve the honor of your name I have decided to have your father transferred to the Charenton nursing home.”. It should be noted that for Fouché Charenton an insane asylum was nothing more than a nursing home a prison. It should not be forgotten that a large proportion of the population of these asylums did not fit into the social and moral field and psychiatry has long had no other aim than to normalize to make them fit for social life. Contrary to what has been said Sade fits in perfectly. However as soon as he entered Charenton Sade's attitude led to his expulsion to Bicêtre the Bastille of scoundrels but his family succeeded in getting him back into the Charenton asylum. Charenton was not only the Marquis de Sade's last incarceration but also the last place he lived in where he died in 1814. The 19 lines scrupulously crossed out on the back of the leaf reveal a few words or letters; in this respect we can conjecture that it's a coded message which Sade was quite fond of for if censorship had been behind these erasures absolutely everything would have been yet the message clearly shows that almost everything has been conscientiously crossed out apart from a few words or letters. We can still make out a few of them: 'Nécessaire' 'à tous' 'ger' 'ue' 'quel' 'je trouve' 'de'. As for the letter itself it is remarkable for the homogeneity of its message. It is a lengthy complaint describing the physical ailments Sade has suffered. It is an account of the sum total of the symptoms that overwhelm the writer. In a hyperbolic style using among other figures of speech adverbs of intensity si tel très. Sade methodically spells out the violent pains his body is suffering with the whole of this violence constituting a system a structure in which all the parts are linked. In the writer's correspondence it can be said that each time he found himself incarcerated his letters mention uncontrollable physical attacks although we know of no other letter so uniform and systematic.The pain originates in the pit of the stomach radiating out to the periphery: head eyes legs all converging on vertigo loss of balance. .because that's what it's all about: Sade isn't suffering from any illness he's besieged by anguish whose ultimate meaning is vertigo the wavering of a reality from which his freedom to live as he pleases his freedom of movement and his name have been taken away. The loss of these fundamental elements of his existence sends Sade in turmoil. In addition and as regards the formation of these particular symtoms if we consider that the fulfillment of a certain sexual sadism is necessary to him the deprivation of this satisfaction turns this sadistic drive on itself which becomes masochistic. The impossibility of externalizing the destructiveness that inhabits him even if only through willpower makes his own body the tortured seat with Sade becoming both agent and victim of his own sadism. 1793. Fine. 1er avril 1793 15.60 x 20 cm une page sur un feuillet Unpublished autograph letter signed and dated written in black ink and addressed to a notary. On the verso probably in the hand of a secretary the inscription ""Sade du 1er avril 1793""; below this inscription a short sentence in the Marquis's hand: ""so that I may write to Gaufridy to send him money"". Some transverse folds from the original folding for posting. Lengthy letter addressed to a notary while the Marquis freed on April 2 1790 by the abolition of royal warrants is at liberty and attempting to put his affairs in order. After the Revolution his sons emigrated and he did not follow them. His name nevertheless appears on the list of persons who left France due to the revolutionary troubles: ""I hope that with all this I will manage to have my name erased from that fatal list of émigrés."" Anxious not to be considered a ci-devant Marquis in this period preceding the Terror he insists on the persecution of which he claims to be a victim despite his good will: ""It is an unparalleled atrocity that such a trick should have been played on me who have not left Paris since the revolution and who since that time have not ceased to give the most unequivocal proofs of my patriotism"". In this letter Sade also denounces the complexity of the workings of the French administration after the Revolution: ""I have just sent M. Lions the appropriate certificate of residence and I have attached a petition to the district which he tells me is . essential."" Impecunious he begs his lawyer ""to excite the zeal of those who owe him and to urge them to pay as much money as they collect immediately to M. Gauffridi sic"" and does not hesitate to show himself obliging in order to achieve his ends: ""spare no effort then I beseech you . always preserve for me your care and your friendship . I embrace and greet you with all my heart."" Sade's efforts would prove futile; in December 1793 he was imprisoned at the Madelonnettes before being admitted through the good offices of his friend Mme Quenet to the Coignard de Picpus establishment a nursing home sheltering wealthy suspects. Christmas Card for 1944. SIGNED BY DONITZ IN 1944
Single sheet of stout card measuring approx. 4.5 x 7.5 inches (12.0 x 19.0 cms), obverse with gilt edges printed with the insignia of 'Admiral Inspector of the Fleet' in gilt and black and seasonal text in black; reverse blank, the whole housed in custom-made solander case. The seasonal text, SIGNED BY DONITZ IN BLUE INK , reads 'Grossadmiral Donitz dankt fur die guten Wunsche zum Weihachtsfest und zum neuen jahr und erwidert sie herzlich'. Grossadmiral Karl Donitz (1871-1980), German naval leader and Hitler's successor, commanded the Kriegsmarine during the latter half of WWII and is remembered particularly for his promotion of the U-boat offensive. He also served as Reichspraesident following Hitler's suicide in April 1945. Having authorised the German surrender he became a prisoner-of-war of the British and was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment for war crimes (primarily for ordering unrestricted submarine warfare). Following his release from Spandau in October 1956, Donitz's reputation underwent a degree of rehabilitation and he took considerable pains to answer correspondence and to provide autographs when required (including a facsimile for historians and collectors of the Articles of Surrender which he co-signed with Montgomery). HOWEVER, DOCUMENTS SIGNED BY DONITZ DURING THE WAR YEARS ARE SCARCE.

4to, v,[i],166pp., large paper copy, signed by Donnadieu, presentation inscription from Puttick and Simpson to John Young, 17 extra inserted plates, some light foxing throughout, ruled in red with prices and buyers' in a cont. hand, cont. blue half morocco, rubbed, marbled sides, t.e.g. An unusual and important autograph collection formed by an anglophile Frenchman. Munby calls it "one on the finest collections of autograph letters ever to come under the hammer" and notes that the catalogue "with its long verbatim extracts from letters, still has a research value and it set a new standard in the description of such material in the auction room". It included the 'very important assemblage of English Royal Letters, formed by the late William Upcott, Esq., the principal portion of which were originally collected by the celebrated John Evelyn.' Post sale catalogue issued in large paper with the extra plates for private distribution. It realized ?1,610.6.6. The facsimiles reproduce autograph letters by Aretino, Cesare Borgia, Catherine Parr, Cromwell, Earl of Essex, Lady Jane Gray, John Locke, Newton, Raleigh, Raphael (with drawing), Rembrandt, Rubens, etc. Munby, The Cult of the Autograph Letter in England, pp.72-74. Fayard et Cie, Paris, 1933, 315 pp. Très bel exemplaire enrichi d'un superbe envoi autographe de Maurice Donnay "à Lucien Descaves, Au doyen plein de verdeur de mes plus chers amis, je confie ces "secrets", en attendant le prochain volume où tant de mes souvenirs seront mêlés aux siens ! Je trouve en rentrant à Agay votre lettre dans laquelle vous me faits le grand honneur de me demander de présider votre réunion conférence qui aura lieu le mardi 12 Décembre à Paris [...]". - Auf Briefpapier mit gepr. Briefkopf. - Donnay verfasste vor allem Komödien. Im Jahr 1907 wurde er Mitglied der Académie française. Er wurde auch mit dem Titel Großoffizier der Ehrenlegion geehrt.

Oblong 8vo (postcard). ½ page. Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - A student of the sculptor Ernst Rietschel in Dresden, Donndorf completed the Luther Monument in Worms after Rietschel's death together with Gustav Adolph Kietz and taught sculpture from 1876 to 1910 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. - Traces of a postmark. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.

"Nicht Qualität, sondern Stimmenmehrheit entscheidet in Deutschland. An seinem Marke zehrt die Zersplitterung durch Parteien u. dadurch zum Teil parasitenhafte Beamtenwirtschaft, die sich durch Rücksicht auf Parteimächte eingenistet hat. An dieser fruchtlosen Überlastung leidet der Aufstieg Deutschlands, dem ein rücksichtsloser Diktator fehlt [...]". Geschrieben als Beitrag für die von Friedrich Koslowsky im Berliner Eigenbrödler-Verlag herausgegebene Faksimile-Anthologie "Deutschlands Köpfe der Gegenwart über Deutschlands Zukunft" (1928). This NASA administrator served as Kennedy Space Center Test Support Officer; he directed the Apollo countdowns. Signed First Day Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled at Kennedy Space Center Florida on 2 August 1971 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Two joined 8-cent "United States in Space" and "A Decade of Achievement" stamps at upper right. Fine. Near lower left in black fineline Donnelly signs boldly adding "Assoc Dir Ops / KSC - NASA." An einen nicht namentlich genannten Zeitungsherausgeber als Begleitbrief zur Übermittlung einer Neuerscheinung: "Euer Wohlgeboren wollen gütigst erlauben, daß ich in der Anlage ein Exemplar der neuesten verbesserten Auflage meiner Übersetzung des Sophokles, welche so eben die Presse verläßt, überreiche. Die erste Auflage des Werkes erschien im J. 1839 und hatte das Glück, daß zwei Jahre hernach, im Herbst 1841, zwei Stücke daraus, zuerst Antigone, dann Oedipus auf Kolonos, in unveränderter Gestalt, ausgestattet mit der Musik von Mendelssohn, im Neuen Palais bei Potsdam, später auch, in den fünfziger Jahren, König Oedipus (die Chorgesänge mit der Composition von Lachner) auf dem Hoftheater zu München und auf anderen deutschen Bühnen zur Aufführung gelangten. [...]". - Donner beklagt, dass in der deutschen Presse die von Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy im Auftrag Friedrich Wilhelms IV. vertonte "Antigone" mit der Übersetzung des kürzlich verstorbenen klassischen Philologen August Boeckh (1785-1867) in Zusammenhang gebracht werde, und bittet, dies zu korrigieren: "Ich würde es nun mit besonderem Dank erkennen, wenn Sie Veranlassung nehmen wollten, diesem Gerede, das mir natürlich nicht gleichgültig sein kann, in Ihrem weitgelesenen Blatte entgegenzutreten. To his friend Étienne Villeneuve (1800-1882), professor of medicine in Marseille, expressing his regret of having missed Villeneuve's visit in Bordeaux, as he had been looking forward to reminiscence "our old memories of land and sea". Originally enclosed was "the solemn response of our faculty of theology" to a question that Villeneuve had submitted to Donnet: "J'ai été bien peiné en rentrant aujourd'hui à Bordeaux d'avoir manqué hier votre visite. Je vous aurais conjuré d'accepter ma modeste hospitalité. Nous avions rappelé nos vieux souvenirs de terre et de mer. Vous trouverez ci-incluse la réponse solennelle de notre faculté de théologie à la question que vous m'avez soumise." - On stationery with lithogr. letterhead of the Archbishop of Bordeaux. - Minimally creased.
