TNS 1p 7¼" X 10¼" Los Angeles CA 19 November 1940. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Fine. On buff imprinted letterhead Douglas thanks an admirer. In part: "As a matter of fact no thanks are really needed -- the results of the election compensated for anything I may have accomplished." Boldly signed in black ink. Douglas and his wife were both staunch Democrats and Gates likely thanked Douglas for helping securing a strong turnout for Roosevelt in California. Comes with a superb 10" X 8" glossy photograph a still scene from the 1936 film "Theodora Goes Wild" showing Douglas romancing Irene Dunne as a dog observes. An exceptionally early and choice Douglas letter with interesting political content. unknown

Outstanding TLS 1p 8" X 10½" Washington DC 1966 January 21. Addressed to Mary McCarthy and John A. Werner. Fine. On "Congress of the United States" letterhead the famed liberal Democrat writes to two educators at the North Chicago Community High School "about guiding the direction of your lives." In part: "You and your contemporaries will do well to contemplate the fact that although the future may seem wholly obscure to you right now the pattern of your lives is to a considerable extent already determined. Your character will not change greatly even though with the years you may acquire greater wisdom and experience. nd it is your character that determines your conduct at each moment of decision in your life. Certainly it is never too late to strive for self-improvement. But if at the age of seventeen or eighteen you are habitually dishonest or lazy or greedy or cruel you probably do not have any incentive to reform yourself. If you are honest and humane and unselfish now you have a set of standards that will guide you in the paths of righteousness and help you to shun false values." Goes on along these frank but inspirational lines - excellent original content not simply boilerplate politician pablum. Large bold full signature in blue ballpoint. Ein Stück schottisch-amerikanische Geschichte: Ein Gesuch vor dem Obergericht von Richmond County um Zuerkennung der amerikanischen Staatsbürgerschaft durch die Goldschmiede David Downie und dessen Sohn Charles aus Schottland, eingereicht nach Ablauf der vorgeschriebenen fünf Jahre nach der 1796 erfolgten Einwanderung. Enthält die Vereidigungsformel der Antragsteller und Bürgen, welche den tadellosen Charakter der Petenten bezeugen: "The petition of David Downie and Charles Downie, Humbly Sheweth, That they are natives of Scotland and subjects of his Britan[n]ic Majesty, and are desirous of becoming Citizens of the United States [...] Wherefore your petitioners pray that they may be admitted Citizens of the said United States [...], and each for himself maketh Oath and saith, that he will support the Constitution of the United Sates and that he doth absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State and Sover[e]ignty [...]. [T]hey have behaved as men of good moral character, attached to the constitution ot the United States and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the same [...]". - David Downie, den liberalen Whigs zugehörig und während der Französischen Revolution Verfechter eines Friedens mit Frankreich, wollte als einer der wenigen Katholiken der Edinburgher Goldschmiedezunft Reformen in der Stadtregierung durchsetzen, was zu Zerwürfnissen innerhalb der mächtigen Gilde und mit den konservativen Torys führte. Da friedliche Interventionen scheiterten, plante er 1794 gemeinsam mit dem Weinhändler Robert Watt und weiteren Gesinnungsgenossen einen gewaltsamen Aufstand ("Pike Plot"), wurde jedoch zuvor verhaftet. Im Gegensatz zu Watt entging Downie der Todesstrafe wegen Hochverrats, wurde begnadigt und nach einjähriger Haftstrafe in die Vereinigten Staaten abgeschoben, wo er weiterhin das Goldschmiedehandwerk ausübte und 80-jährig als angesehener Bürger verstarb. Der Ur-Ur-Großvater des späteren Präsidenten Ronald Reagan, Claud Wilson, heiratete 1807 David Downies Tochter Peggy. - Mit zweifacher Unterschrift David und Charles Downies sowie Gegenzeichnung des Gouverneurs von Georgia, George Walton, einem der Unterzeichner der Unabhängigkeitserklärung der Vereinigten Staaten. Ferner mit zweifacher Gegenzeichnung des Kanzlisten, Joseph Hutchinson, und weiteren Unterschriften der Bürgen, darunter der Politiker und Kurator der University of Georgia, Dennis Smelt, ein Kaufmann namens John B. Lary, ein Lewis Harris und zwei weitere Unterschriften. Rubrum verso, einige längere Einrisse entlang der Faltlinien, wenige kleine Tintenflecken und kleine Papierdurchbrüche.

4to (161 x 202 mm). 27 pp. Ink on lined paper, numbered in pencil in another hand. Fastened with brass tack at upper left corner. Stored in a quarter morocco clamshell case. (With:) The Strand Magazine. London, George Newnes, November 1921 issue (No. 371, Vol. 62), story published on pp. 380-388. The complete autograph manuscript of a work widely considered one of Doyle's best ghost stories. The macabre tale unites two of the author's great passions, boxing and Spiritualism, to create the tale of a sinister prize fighter whose physical brutality does not die. The present manuscript contains mostly minor edits, though a handful of pages include more substantial excisions and additions: on page nine, for example, "the man who accosted them" has been replaced with simply "him", and the description of "a surly red face" has been expanded to include "with an ill-fitting lower lip". On page 13, nearly twenty words have been crossed out. Includes a fine, bright copy of the "Strand Magazine" issue in which the story was first published. - Some spotting and soiling, most visible on first and final pages. Centre crease throughout. Ink a little faded in some places; final page with a little creasing and a couple short closed tears. Provenance: Sotheby’s New York, 10 Dec. 1993, lot 320. Latterly in the collection of the U.S. lawyer Edward R. Leahy (b. 1947).

To the Bristol brewer and businessman Frederick William Bennett (d. 27 Sept. 1941): "Dear Sir / It does seem most disgraceful / Yours sincerely / A Conan Doyle [...]". - Doyle in his later life turned to spiritualism and in 1918 published his first spiritualist book "The New Revelation". - Slightly browned due to paper.
