In French to Louis Philippe I (1773-1850), King of the French, regretting that he does not hold a title distinguished enough to allow him to see the King in person, and about his shattered hopes for a promotion: "N'ayant aucun des titres qui pouvaient m'autoriser à me presenter chez Votre Majesté dans les instans où differentes circonstances m'en faisaient un devoir, j'ai dû m'en abstenir quelque peine que j'en eprouvasse. Le premier de l'année et au jour de la Sainte Philippe, j'avais esperé d'être plus heureux, mais forcé de renoncer encore à cette esperance. Votre Majesté voudra bien m'excuser d'un manque d'Egards bien involontaires de ma part et me permettre de lui en temoigner l'expression de mes vifs regrets au moment à m'absenter de paris [!] et n'ayant pas un occasion de lui renouveller l'assurance de mon sincère attachement et du profond respect avec lequel j'ai l'honneur d'être [...]". - Blue crayon note by a former collector about rediscovering the letter in the Tuilleries five years after it was written: "trouvé le 24 Fevr. 1848 au jardin des Tuilleries". - Small tear above first line, not affecting text. 8vo and 12mo. 5½ pp. on 20 ff. Together with 5 portraits. The earliest and most important piece of the collection is a letter to Victor Hugo that can be dated to the first half of 1836. After inquiring whether Hugo is still in Paris, Girardin asks him to join a dinner with several supporters ahead of the launch of "La Presse" on 15 June 1836. Girardin stresses the importance of the occasion and of Hugo's role: "Il faut que votre voix m'aide a mettre sur pied toute notre phalange". The supporters mentioned are the poet and author Alphonse de Lamartine (1790-1869), the politician and journalist Jean-Pierre Pagès (1784-1866), and the journalist Adolphe Granier de Cassagnac (1806-80). The first publication of "La Presse" can be described as a pre-launch prospectus, laying down Girardin's journalistic principles and expectations, the scope of "La Presse" and its price. The first article was entitled "Esprit de la rédaction" and opened with a quote by Victor Hugo, connecting the values of the French Revolution with the ongoing struggle for civilizing progress, that was written for the occasion. Quotes by Lamartine and commentaries on the "Present and the future of France" by Hugo and Lamartine were also included. The official launch of "La Presse" as a daily newspaper followed on 1 July 1836 and was an immediate success due to its low price and the collaboration with important authors such as Honoré de Balzac, Alexandre Dumas, Victor Hugo, and Eugène Scribe. - The second dated letter of the collection highlights Émile de Girardin's bitter conflict with the competing newspaper "Le National". This conflict had culminated in a duel between Girardin and Armand Carrel, the co-founder and editor of "Le National", on 21 July 1836, which left both men severely injured. Carrel succumbed to his injuries three days later, and Girardin decided not to agree to any more duels. - Nevertheless, the feud between the two newspapers continued. In a letter to the editor-in-chief of "Le National", dated 23 October 1843, Girardin insists on the publication of his reply to a letter by a magistrate that has been published by "Le National" in connection with a local affair in Bourganeuf (Creuse departement) that personally involved Girardin. The letter had originally been published in 1839 but was republished in reaction to an article in "La Presse" from 11 May 1843, upon the election of the new mayor of Bourganeuf, that alludes to the affair and hostilities towards Girardin. It is this certainly minor affair that incited Girardin's acrimonious letter, which very formally addressed the editor-in-chief Jules Bastide as "Monsieur le Gérant du National". - The collection also includes two undated letters. One to the publisher Michel Levy concerning letters of the painter Charles Latoison-Duval, which Girardin recommends for publication: "Cette lettre vous sera remis par M. Latoison-Duval qui a écrit des lettres dont j'ai lu la première. Elle m'a paru saillante. [...]". - The second undated letter was written to apologize to a an unnamed recipient for not having been able to meet her. In another letter of apology, dated 14 May 1861, Girardin cancels a promenade with the recipient because of an urgent appointment at the prefecture. - The final letter in the collection is a beautiful testimony to Girardin's enthusiasm for the theatre. In 1864 Girardin had collaborated with Alexandre Dumas fils on his only play, "Le supplice d'une femme". As the Comédie Française picked up the play, Girardin contacted the actor Henri Lafontaine, who was considered for the male lead, requesting a meeting: "Monsieur, vous avez été informé, je le crois, que je vous destinais l'un des deux rôles du drame que la Comédie Française a reçu et qui est intitulé: Le supplice d'une femme. Ce rôle vif sera distribué, mais avant qu'il le soit, si cela vous plaisait, nous en pourrions causer" (Paris, 31 Dec. 1864). The play premiered on 29 April 1865 with Lafontaine and Zélia Ponsin, following which she was elected a Sociétaire of the Comédie Française. - Together with 3 portrait photographs, 1 Woodburytype, and 1 lithograph of Émile de Girardin. The Woodburytype was produced for the "Galerie Contemporaine" by the Parisian studio G. Fontaine and can be dated to ca. 1876. - Well preserved. The letter to Victor Hugo with traces of folds and autograph address; the letter to Lévy somewhat smudged. Collector's notes in pencil (mostly numbering) and traces of former mounting on all pieces.

This prominent New York physician a close friend of William Jennings Bryan was brought in as a consultant after the assassination attempt on President Garfield and was the last survivor of the four physicians brought in to attend the president; he took part in Alexander Graham Bell's disastrous attempt to use metal detection to pinpoint and extract the bullet causing a fatal infection; later he developed the Girdner telephonic bullet probe supposedly plagiarizing the concept from Bell; in 1869 he was the first physician to use cadaver skin to cover a burn wound on a 10-year-old child. TLS 1p 8�" X 11" New York NY 1912 March 22. Addressed to Charles White of the New York Hall of Records later a noted Abraham Lincoln scholar. Very good. Moderately age toned. Chatty note to the tax commissioner on his medical office letterhead reading in part: "I regret as much as you can that we do not see more of each other but I have got an endless job on my hands which requires all my time sleeping and waking." Of his profession Girdner remarks: "You remember I used to want to reform other people and things: well one day I looked myself over and I have been a busy man ever since and the end of the job is not in sight. You call me a 'rich physician' and so I am but my wealth is not of the kind your office recognises as taxable fortunately for me. I think you do yourself an injustice when you speak of having 'slipped back'. You know the old Methodist doctrine that one 'cannot fall from grace' and I am certain that when I knew you you were so well grounded in the faith that not even the temptations etc. of your present occupation and environment can drag you down." Pleine basane brune, dos à nerfs orné de compartiments dorés, tranches mouchetées, reliure de l'époque, ex-libris manuscrit "Ant Debargues" et bel ex-libris armorié D Laus de Boissy appliqué sur le contreplat. Petit travail de vers (environ 3cm) au bas du mors du 2e plat, brunissure dans les fonds de 9 feuillets et brunissure angulaire sur 8 feuillets. Bel exemplaire. Manuscrit en langue latine, rédigé par une seule personne, bien représentatif de la graphie de l'époque et contenant de nombreuses abréviations conventionnelles. Copie du traité théologique du verbe incarné du Jésuite Jean Gisbert né à Cahors en 1699, décédé en 1711. Ce grand érudit enseigna la rhétorique à Tours, puis la théologie à Toulouse, il devint ensuite Provincial du Languedoc. Exemplaire de la bibliothèque de Louis de Laus de Boissy, homme de Lettres né et mort à Paris (1743-1799). Grand admirateur de Voltaire, il entretint avec celui-ci une correspondance. Il fut Juge au Tribunal Civil de la Seine pendant la Révolution.

Gish and Meredith performed this popular piece in 1937-38. A printed text along the blank lower margin features a few lines of the characters' dialogue and on this margin the actress boldly pens "In remembrance Lillian Gish: / 1985" in black ballpoint. An Cajetan von Felder, Bürgermeister von Wien: "Beiliegend erlaube ich mir Ihnen Alles zu übermachen, was der gestern erwähnte Mann mir zur Unterstützung seines Anliegens selbst geschickt hat u. bitte die Behelligung nicht übel zu nehmen [...]". - Giskra gehörte 1848 zu den Wortführern der "Sturmpetition" und wurde als Abgeordneter in das Frankfurter Parlament entsandt. Als Bürgermeister von Brünn wurde er von Bismarck mit einer Friedensmission nach Wien betraut; als Innenminister (1867-70) führte er die Trennung von Verwaltung und Rechtsprechung durch und setzte sich für die Dezemberverfassung von 1867 sowie für die Auflösung des Konkordats von 1855 ein. - Mit Stempel der Handschriftensammlung J. This Italian-Swiss designer illustrator and sculptor co-designed the Swiss Pavilion at the 1939 New York World's Fair but it's for major magazine front covers -- "Time" "Fortune" etc. -- that he's often remembered. Signed First Day Cover 6�" X 3�" cancelled in Milwaukee Wisconsin on 21 August 1971 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Fine. No cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address. Preprinted red Giusti-designed "Bowling U.S. 8c" stamp at upper right; at lower left Giusti signs large and bold in black fineline. Small portion of original transmittal envelope present.
