Typed Letter Signed
This prominent New York physician a close friend of William Jennings Bryan was brought in as a consultant after the assassination attempt on President Garfield and was the last survivor of the four physicians brought in to attend the president; he took part in Alexander Graham Bell's disastrous attempt to use metal detection to pinpoint and extract the bullet causing a fatal infection; later he developed the Girdner telephonic bullet probe supposedly plagiarizing the concept from Bell; in 1869 he was the first physician to use cadaver skin to cover a burn wound on a 10-year-old child. TLS 1p 8½" X 11" New York NY 1912 March 22. Addressed to Charles White of the New York Hall of Records later a noted Abraham Lincoln scholar. Very good. Moderately age toned. Chatty note to the tax commissioner on his medical office letterhead reading in part: "I regret as much as you can that we do not see more of each other but I have got an endless job on my hands which requires all my time sleeping and waking." Of his profession Girdner remarks: "You remember I used to want to reform other people and things: well one day I looked myself over and I have been a busy man ever since and the end of the job is not in sight. You call me a 'rich physician' and so I am but my wealth is not of the kind your office recognises as taxable fortunately for me. I think you do yourself an injustice when you speak of having 'slipped back'. You know the old Methodist doctrine that one 'cannot fall from grace' and I am certain that when I knew you you were so well grounded in the faith that not even the temptations etc. of your present occupation and environment can drag you down." In französischer Sprache an eine Graphologin, der sie diese in Eile verfasste Schriftprobe zukommen lasse, betonend, dass sie weder etwas gegen Graphologen habe noch diese fürchte, jedoch bereits wisse, wie ihre Handschrift interpretiert werden werde, und mit der Beobachtung, dass die Mehrheit der Graphologen nicht allzu viel von ihrem Beruf verstünden und ihre Ergebnisse oft nicht gültig seien: "Je ne sais si ce petit mot écrit à la hâte vous sera d'une quelconque utilité. Je n'ai rien contre les graphologues et je les redoute nullement, connaissant hélas fort bien ce qu'ils peuvent déceler dans mon écriture. Tolosa anno Dei 1692-1693. In-16 1 feuillet titre, 163 feuillets non chiffrés (soit 326pp) 12 feuillets blancs. Pleine basane brune, dos à nerfs orné de compartiments dorés, tranches mouchetées, reliure de l'époque, ex-libris manuscrit "Ant Debargues" et bel ex-libris armorié D Laus de Boissy appliqué sur le contreplat. Petit travail de vers (environ 3cm) au bas du mors du 2e plat, brunissure dans les fonds de 9 feuillets et brunissure angulaire sur 8 feuillets. Bel exemplaire. Manuscrit en langue latine, rédigé par une seule personne, bien représentatif de la graphie de l'époque et contenant de nombreuses abréviations conventionnelles. Copie du traité théologique du verbe incarné du Jésuite Jean Gisbert né à Cahors en 1699, décédé en 1711. Ce grand érudit enseigna la rhétorique à Tours, puis la théologie à Toulouse, il devint ensuite Provincial du Languedoc. Exemplaire de la bibliothèque de Louis de Laus de Boissy, homme de Lettres né et mort à Paris (1743-1799). Grand admirateur de Voltaire, il entretint avec celui-ci une correspondance. Il fut Juge au Tribunal Civil de la Seine pendant la Révolution.

Srpsko lekarsko društvo), 1873 wurde er Leibarzt des Fürsten Milan Obrenovic und 1876 gehörte er zu den Mitbegründern des serbischen Roten Kreuzes. Seit 1877 war er Oberkommandierender des gesamten Sanitätswesens der serbischen Armee. In dieser Funktion leitete Gjorgjevic nach dem Krieg weitgehende Reformen der medizinischen Versorgung im Heer ein. 1885/86 nahm er am Serbisch-Bulgarischen Krieg teil. Seit 1888 war er korrespondierendes, seit 1892 ordentliches Mitglied der Serbischen Akademie der Wissenschaften.

I hope however the main pressure will soon be over+ in any case I hope to visit the Club soon [...]" (5 Jan. 1915, on headed paper of the War Refugees Committee). - "[...] I will come to you in time tomorrow. But I cannot take the speech, though not from want of faith. I am now on the shelf + outside active party politics , + am engaged in other things [...] so please get some one else [...]" (18 Nov. 1920). Includes a fragment of an envelope with Gladstone's autograph signature.
