Although the unnamed role is "in itself insignificant", Gheusi had the recipient's name placed next to that of the soprano Marthe Chenal, who created a leading role, so that the public and professionals would immediately notice her: "Le rôle des 4 Journées est insignifiant en soi ; mais j'ai tenu à faire inscrire votre nom auprès de celui de Mlle Chenal, dans une grande création. Ainsi, vous serez tout de suite signalée aux musiciens et au public". - Pierre-Barthélemy Gheusi was director of the Opéra-Comique from 1914 to 1918 and again from 1932 to 1936. - On stationery with embossed letterhead of the Opéra-Comique. To impresario Josef Pellet in Graz, discussing some details for a "dernier concert" on Monday, because Ghys stays until the following Tuesday or Wednesday and is persuaded to think that there will be as many people visiting this concert as on the day before. Ghys is nevertheless offering to limit himself to 80 florim this time: "Ne partant que le mardi au mercredi prochain, je viens vous demander s'il peut vous êtes agréable que je donne un dernier concert Lundi. Je suis intimement persuadé que vous aurez autant de monde que hier, néanmoins je me borner pour cette foi à 80 florim Münze [...]". - Somewhat browned; fol. 2 with small tear. Leaves uniformly shaded traces of former pasted mounts on verso. A photographic reproduction of the famous composer's portrait is enclosed. Puccini responds to a patron's request to have La Bohème performed at a charity event: ""Io non ho niente in contrario che la Bohème venga eseguita per una sera corta a scopo benefico."" I have no problem with La Bohème being performed for a charity event. ""Credo pero che sarebbe bene avere anche la adesione della Casa Ricordi proprietaria dello spartito."" I believe however that it would be good to have the authorization of Casa Ricordi Puccini's publishing house owner of the score. Despite the failure of the first performance on February 1 1896 La Bohème subsequently enjoyed worldwide success rapidly becoming one of the finest operas in the Romantic repertoire. A fine tribute to the triumph of one of the greatest composers of the late 19th-century. unknown

"Zur freundlichen Erinnerung". - Seit 1886 als jugendlicher Held und Liebhaber am Deutschen Theater in Budapest tätig, stand Giampietro anschließend in Bozen, Meran, Salzburg und Karlsbad auf der Bühne und folgte 1888 einem Ruf an das neu gegründete Deutsche Volkstheater in seiner Heimatstadt. Später wechselte er zur Operette, sang am Theater an der Wien, wurde 1900 an das Deutsche Schauspielhaus in Hamburg verpflichtet, trat seit 1901 am Neuen Theater in Berlin auf und feierte später am Metropol-Theater große Erfolge.

Colorful American adventurer and World War One "Chicago Tribune" war correspondent aviation adventurer writer editor radio commentator. Three items the first being a TLS 1p 8½" X 10 3/4" Chicago Tribune letterhead Paris France 1921 November 30. Addressed to Messrs. A.N. Marquis & Company. Very good. Minor edgewear. Encloses "a corrected personal sketch" of his "Who's Who" entry and orders a copy of the completed book. The second and third items consist of two partly-printed unsigned ADs 2pp 8½" X 11" Paris France 1921 November 30. Very good. Minor soiling. Updating form sent out by "Who's Who" for its 1922-23 edition on orange paper with Gibbons' 2½" X 3½" biographical entry from the previous edition affixed onto the blank center area. In heavy pencil Gibbons has made extensive minor corrections most notably adding the following: "While passenger on SS Laconia torpedoed and sunk night Feb 25 1917 200 miles off Irish coast after night in small boat rescued and cabled 4000 word account of disaster in which American lost lives." The third page is identical to the second but affixed to the center is the corrected entry with Gibbons' changes incorporated. A fascinating document recording the daring exploits of this legendary correspondent. Lastly also present is a printed condolence acknowledgment card sent out by Gibbons' family upon his death heavy stock 4 3/4" X 3½" n.p. n.y. 1939. Ornately printed: "The family of / Floyd Gibbons / appreciates and gratefully acknowledges / your kind expression of sympathy." Fine. unknown

Signature and Salutation
Known as "Vinegar" Gibbs for his sour rhetoric this knighted 1805 English jurisprudence figure was a barrister member of Parliament for Great Bedwyn attorney general and privy counsellor. Signature and salutation presumably from the close of an ALS 4½" X 3" n.p. n.y. Very good. Laid to a heavy album leaf of same size. "with great respect / Sir / yr most obedt / humble servt / V. Gibbs." Below this another hand identifies Gibbs and dates this to 1809. Attractive. unknown
