John, Alois, Schriftsteller (1860-1935).
Eigenh. Brief mit U. Eger, 30. XII. 1894.
4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo.

Printed Document Signed
Secretary of War Harry H. Woodring's Assistant Secretary of War 1937-40 felt betrayed when President Roosevelt didn't appoint him to the cabinet after Woodring's resignation in 1940 -- but when President Truman's first Secretary of Defense James V. Forrestal resigned in 1948 he became this country's second Secretary of Defense in 1949 only serving until 1950 when he resigned and paved the way for the illustrious George C. Marshall. Printed DS 3pp rectos only 8" X 12" n.p. 1937. Very good. Lightly edgeworn with faint single horizontal fold at center; stapled at upper left. Marked "FUTURE RELEASE / Please Note Date" in red at top of first page the War Department press release is summarized at top: 'This address of The Honorable Louis Johnson The Assistant Secretary of War to be made at the Armistice Day Ceremonies at the National Memorial Amphitheater Arlington National Cemetery Virginia on November 11 1937." Johnson's speech begins "Another year has passed. Again we have stood in devout silence before the tomb of our Unknown Soldier. Again we have held communion with his immortal soul" and is a touching patriotic address that discusses at some length the U.S.'s military readiness in the face of turmoil in Europe. In a blank portion at upper right of the first page he boldly pens "Louis Johnson / The Assistant Sec of War" in blue ink. Very attractive and highly unusual in this form. unknown

JOHNSTON Sir Harry . 1858 1927
Explorer and administrator who adventured alone into the Congo basin winning Stanley's friendship 1883
Two page Als Mar 26th 1906 on 'Station Hotel Newcastle' headed notepaper making arrangements to be at the Geographical Institute for his lecture bringing slides. Partly laid down on paper. WITH . One folio page TLs Nov 20th 1902 27 Chester Terrace Regent's Park N. W. to Thomas making possible arrangements to give a lecture to the Society of Arts. Mostly amusingly he resists 'Africa' as his eternal subject of which ' I am just a wee bit sick'. He talks about Ireland of Beauty or even an attack on certain aspects of Christianity or advocation of Paganism 'with limited human sacrifices'. In one of two written footnotes he admits to an awful frivolous inclination to include a song and a dance. Very Good. Manuscript. unknown

Johst, Hanns, Schriftsteller (1890-1978).
"Deutschland? . . . Keiner weiß, wo es anfängt, keiner, wo es aufhört. Es hat keine Grenzen in dieser Welt . . . Man hat es im Herzen . . oder man findet es nirgends und nie . . . / Frundsberg in 'Propheten' [...]". Koslowsky 34.

Unpublished manuscript of the piano cycle comprising three compositions titled "Défilé" (marked "Modéré, mais bien cadencé"), "Soir" (marked "Lent"), and "Poursuite" (marked "Vif"). The first two went on to be arranged for harmonic orchestra in 1935 and 1936, and were subsequently published under the title "Soir et Défilé" in 1937 (Éditions Sociales Internationales). Jolivet had already orchestrated "Soir" for the small orchestra of Marius-François Gaillard in 1935. The cycle premiered at the Société Nationale on 25 February 1933, performed by the pianist Monique Haas. - The first two "croquis" bear numerous annotations for orchestration in crayon and pencil; "Défilé" is crossed out in blue crayon. Following the 11 pages of the "croquis" is a revised version of "Défilé" (3 pp.) as well as a pencil draft for an orchestration of the same for small orchestra (title-page and 2 numbered pages). - With 5 stamps of the "Société des auteurs, compositeurs & éditeurs de musique", dated 18 July 1932, as well as one stamp of the "Commission d'examen des bulletins". Jolivet, André, French composer (1905-1974).
"Sonate pour piano et violon" (K 57). Autograph musical manuscript signed. Paris, spring 1932.
Folio (ca. 275 x 327 mm). 12, 5, 13-37, 15 pp. Ink on staved paper by Néocopie Musicale with 3 systems of 4 staves, as well as 10 staves respectively. In contemporary red wrappers with handwritten cover-title. One of Jolivet's first major works, which remained unpublished until 1989 (Salabert), described by the French violinist and leading interpreter of Jolivet's works, Devy Elrih (1928-2012), as "embracing a new musical language, and a reinvention of notation for violin and piano, as well as the relation of the two". Elrih goes on to characterize the composer's intention to "express himself free of any references to earlier works in this domain [...] as a 27-year-old man, full of life, lyricism and determination". - The sonata, with a duration of 13 to 15 minutes (as noted by Jolivet at the head of the manuscript), comprises three movements: "Ramassé", "Librement", and "Bousculé". The first movement also appears in the prelude of the 1930 work "Prélude et Grave pour violon et piano", revised in 1932 (K 44). Following the first movement (pp. 1-12), the second movement (pp. 13-17) was crossed out in crayon, page 13 bearing the note: "Refait: voir ondes, no. 1 des 3 poèmes pour ondes", referring to the 1935 composition "Trois Poèmes pour ondes Martenot et piano". The revised version of the second movement (paginated 1-5) is inserted between the first movement and the crossed-out second movement. The third movement comprises pp. 18-37. In the 15-page part for violin adjacent to the piano score, the second movment (pp. 6-7) is also crossed out. The violin part includes fingerings added in a different hand. - Analyzing the piece, the musicologist Lucie Kayas concludes that "the whole sonata produces a feeling of heterogeneity of the consecutive tonal, modal and dodecaphonic keys, as if, in contrast with the manner shown by the polytonal works of Jolivet's early youth, an idea of collage prevailed, now through juxtaposition rather than mere simultaneity". - The first movement was performed at the Société Nationale on 2 December 1933 by Gisèle Kuhn and Raoul Visa, while the complete sonata premiered at the Société Nationale on 9 February 1935 with André Huot (violin) and Olivier Messiaen (piano). - With three stamps of the "Societé des auteurs, compositeurs & éditeurs de musique", dated 26 June 1934 (one rather faded), as well as one stamp of the "Commission d'examen des bulletins". Several corrections and annotations in crayon and pencil. Wrappers with several small flaws; spine rebacked with tape. Kayas, André Jolivet (Paris, 2005), pp. 115-117.
