A handwritten signed quatrain by Mallarmé on a card is attached to this letter, the one that will be used for the chimney: Ici le feu pour renaître Tantôt durable ou charmant Comme l'amitié du maître Mêle du chêne au sarment Alidor Delzant was a lawyer, collector and bibliophile. Friend with the Goncourts brothers, he dedicated a book to them and was Edmond's secretary and testamentary beneficiary. A beautiful letter mentioning the creation of a quatrain to embellish Delzant's chimney: "I am infinitely touched, and this thought, like all of yours, is gracious. Here is a concise quatrain + I recommend the engraving in capitals?; tell me if you agree.++ But do you have vine branches?" We attach the original reproduction of the quatrain, likely produced by Mallarmé, destined to adorn the lintel of Alidor Delzant's library chimney in his Paraÿs home. We know Delzant's reply to this letter: "My dear friend / These verses are very beautiful, just what was suited to glorify the Paraÿs Chimney where the vine shoots sparkle around the oak logs. / I remain touched and grateful. / Alidor Delzant." 8vo and 12mo. Altogether 9 pp. on 5 ff. The most important letter in this collection, to his close friend Armand Renaud, was written on 5 Dec. 1869 towards the end of a creative blockage that had begun earlier that same year. Suffering from an old illness and studying for a humanities degree, Mallarmé wished to take a year's leave from his post as a teacher in Avignon. He informs Renaud about his request to the Ministry of Education and his financial worries: "I find myself with hardly enough to get by". Therefore, he asks Armand to inform M. Lebourgeois of his request, who should in turn use his influence at the Ministry to obtain a higher allowance for Mallarmé. He also hints at the abandonment of his first literary project since 1866, the philosophical poem "Igitur", because of his studies: "I worked on what I told you but a serious occupation, which must be that of my forced leisure (the humanities degree in view of the doctorate), will give my thoughts a different direction. To tell the truth, a year of Latin and Greek suddenly appearing is a fortunate and interesting perspective". The Ministry granted Mallarmés leave, and during the year 1870 he worked on a linguistic thesis and a Latin thesis on divinity, neither of which he completed. - Mallarmé did not return to Avignon but stayed in Paris where he tried to launch the magazine "Art décoratif" in 1872. In the undated second letter, addressed to a M. Prunère, he announces that the painter Claudius Popelin (1825-92) would contribute a frontispiece to the project, admitting that he did not dare ask for other illustrations: "I saw M. Popelin who was charming and eager to do me the favour. I thus have the promise for a frontispiece [...] Very happy and very proud of my success, I did not dare mention the little ornament that I would like to see at the head of the first page, a kind of title serving as a transition for the reader who browses between the beautiful frontispiece of the cover and the text columns of the first page where it would be placed at the head [...] Do I dare ask you to procure that, just chatting?". The project ultimately fell through, and the recipient of the letter has not been identified. In 1874 Mallarmé launched the avant-garde fashion magazine "La Dernière Mode" and published a few issues as its sole editor. - The last letter in the collection is written to the sculptor and painter Albert Bartholomé (1848-1928) on behalf of the painter Jacques-Émile Blanche (1861-1942), a former student of Mallarmé. Blanche was hoping that the École des Beaux-Arts would buy one of his paintings following the 1892 exhibition of the Société nationale des beaux-arts at the Palais du Champ de Mars. The painting can be identified with his famous portrait of Marcel Proust, today in the collection of the Musée d'Orsay: "I gathered some information and I communicate it to you so as not to exasperate the terrible man we love. It is necessary that M. Blanche immediately addresses the director of the Beaux-Arts with a request to 'include the no. of his painting in the acquisitions made at the Champ-de-Mars'. This formality is indispensable and it will be followed by a recommendation, which, I believe, will have its effect [...]" (10 May, postmarked 1892). - The letter to Armand Renaud on mourning stationery; the letter to Prunère with deep tears in the folds and some browning but no text loss.

À "mon cher Hérold": "[...] Dites si ce n'est pas bien exigeant de vous demander de reprendre demain soir Mardi le chemin de la rue de Rome, parce que je voudrais prendre votre avis sur un rien tout en causant [...]". - En 1888, le tout jeune poète (Hérold est né en 1865) fait parvenir spontanément au Maître son premier recueil de poésie "L'Exil de Harini" que Dalou venait de publier. L'accueil de Mallarmé lui fut d'emblée favorable et Hérold allait devenir un des plus fervents affidés des célèbres Mardis de la rue de Rome, où se croisèrent entre 1880 et 1898, Verlaine, Gide, Louÿs, Régnier, Whistler, etc. autant de visiteurs illustres ou poètes inconnus qui participèrent à la légende mallarméenne des Mardis, ces réunions hebdomadaires où le Maître improvisait, debout, fumant la pipe, face à des disciples dévots de la génération post-symboliste. - A.-J. Ferdinand Hérold est le petit fils du compositeur Ferdinand Hérold (l'auteur du Pré-aux-Clercs). Entré à l'École des Chartes en 1885, il en sort trois ans plus tard pour se consacrer entièrement à la littérature qu'il servit au cours de sa vie avec beaucoup d'intelligence et de sensibilité poétique. Il s'immisce parmi les auteurs symbolistes, fréquente assidument les Mardis de Mallarmé, et noue une vive amitié avec son coreligionnaire le poète Pierre Louÿs dont il se séparera au moment de l'Affaire Dreyfus. Très lié au cercle des Heredia (les sœurs Heredia), Régnier, Gautier (par Judith Gautier, la fille de Théophile), Louÿs et Valéry, ami des musiciens Fauré et Ravel, il fut un contributeur avisé au Mercure de France d'Alfred Vallette. Poète, mais aussi auteur dramatique, traducteur d'Eschyle et d'Euripide, plusieurs de ses pièces furent représentées sur la scène du théâtre d'avant-garde de Lugné-Poë (L'Anneau de Çacuntala en 1895, ainsi que La Cloche engloutie, tirée du conte de G. Hauptmann, deux ans plus tard).

The namesake son of the Florida senator and Confederacy's Secretary of the Navy 1812-73 himself served in the Confederate Navy then was elected Florida representative 1891-95 and senator 1897-1907. Printed DS 1p 8" X 3 3/4" Pensacola Florida n.y. likely 1897. Near fine. Lightly age toned. Printed receipt noting "RECEIVED of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Park Commission one copy of its Atlas of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga battlefields" boldly signed by the new senator "Hon. S.R. Mallory" in thick brown ink also noting his address as "Pensacola Fla." Congress first printed this commemorative volume in 1897 thus dating this signature; it sold well enough that a second printing of 4000 sets appeared in 1901. An attractive piece. unknown

The lettering on the spine is faded. The text block is slightly slanted but the book easily stands upright on its own. A sound copy with secure inner hinges. Signed on the front pastedown by Thaddeus A. Abrams a lawyer from Charlotte North Carolina. The front flyleaf has biographical information about Dumas Malone copied from "Who's Who." Some foxing to the title page. The text shows some toning and occasional notations by Abrams. There are also some articles tipped in on various related topics. Tipped in at the rear of the books is the copy of a two page letter from Abrams to Malone dated June 26 1941 and a SIGNED typed letter from Dumas Malone to Abrams dated July 8 1941. The letter from Malone is on the stationary of "Harvard University Press - Cambridge - Massachusetts." Thaddeus Adams knew the subject of the biography UNC and UVA educator Edwin Anderson Alderman. Adams clearly read this book and made notations and his letter copied here on onion-skin paper with his own letterhead offers suggestions and observations on Alderman. Malone says in part "I daresay the book would have profited by some previous conversation or consultation with you. It was a great pleasure to work on it and i hope that I did a fair justice to the subject. "I was struck by the same thing that you were in the quotation which you partially reproduced. I did not have the faintest idea where El Ashar was but looked it up at the time and as best I remember found that it was in Cairo. It was quite characteristic of Alderman to make a reference like this and thus to impress his hearers. This sort of foilble those who knew him were quite ready to forgive and chuckle over." Adams notes in his own letter that he entered UNC-Chapel Hill in 1898 while Dr. Alderman was president. Edwin A. Alderman 1861-1931 graduated from UNC himself in 1882. He was president of UNC from 1896 to 1900. He was then the president of Tulane University in New Orleans from 1900 to 1904. August dieses Jahres zugesandten Exemplares des Karlsbader Gedenkbuches, welche ich nach einer vierwöchentlichen Abwesenheit von Weimar hier vorgefunden habe [...]". - Apollonius von Maltitz war im Diplomatischen Dienst in Rußland, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Wien, Berlin und Rio de Janeiro tätig, wurde 1836 Legationsrat und Gesandtschaftssekretär in München und vertrat Rußland von 1841 bis zu seiner Pensionierung 1865 als Geschäftsträger in Weimar. Sein Werk umfaßt Gedicht, Dramen und Romane.

Zur Zeit seiner Geburt schrieb sich die Familie Maltzahn u. nahm erst im J. 1846 die als älter u. richtiger erkannte, durch einen Lehnsproceß als rechtsgültig constatirte Schreibart Maltzan (welche bis zum Ende des 17ten Jahrhunderts vorgeherrscht hatte) wieder an. Sein Vater, Mecklenburger aus dem seit 1530 reichsfreyherrlichen Hause Penzlin, war im J. 1811 in bairische Militärdienste getreten, hatte 1817 seinen Abschied genommen, sich 1820 mit einer vermögenden Engländerin, Julie Poulet-Thomson [sic], Schwester des 1841 verstorbenen früheren Ministers Lord Sydenham, verheirathet u. lebte bis 1830 in Dresden, dann auf einem Landgut bei Lindau am Bodensee, war jedoch sehr viel auf Reisen, so daß es rathsam wirde, Heinrich schon 1833 in ein Erziehungsinstitut zu geben [...]".

8vo. 1½ pp. on bifolium. Followed by 1½ pp. by his wife Louise-Nicole-Charlotte. To Henri Bertrand, father of Henri-Gatien Bertrand (1773-1844), relaying news about his son in Egypt from Napoleon Bonaparte's younger brother Louis. Malus writes that he just left from visiting Louis Bonaparte who instructed him to tell Bertrand that his son, who would eventually become Aide-de-camp to Napoleon Bonaparte, was promoted commander of the fortifications in Cairo. On his own behalf Malus expresses great satisfaction to know of his son's friendship with such a distinguished officer. Louis Napoleon had offered to forward Betrand's letters to Egypt therefore Malus sends him Napoleon's and his own address in Paris. - In an attachment to the letter written in Chantilly and dated to the 12 Germinal, Malus's wife Louise-Nicole-Charlotte adds that Louis Bonaparte's offer to forward letters via his brother is very valuable to her, since all previous attempts to communicate with her son had failed. She promises to pass on any information about Henri-Gatien Bertrand that might reach her and expresses her hope that the recipient would do the same regarding her son. - Since the decisive Battle of the Nile from the 1st to the 3rd of August 1798 the British Royal Navy had reestablished its dominance in the Mediterranean. The French "Armée d'orient" in Egypt was subsequently cut off from supply and most communication. The letter is a testimony to the dramatic effects of the loss of the French Mediterranean fleet on Napoleon's Egyptian campaign. - Anne-Louis Malus Dumitry's son Étienne-Louis Malus was trained to become a military engineer at the École royale du génie de Mézières and the École Polytechnique in Paris. In 1796 he joined the Engineers Corps of the revolutionary army and quickly ascended the ranks. His scientific career started during the Egyptian campaign when he became a member of the newly founded Institut d'Égypte. Malus's mathematical work was almost entirely concerned with the study of light; he is known for Malus's law, giving the resultant intensity, when a polariser is placed in the path of an incident beam. - With five miniscule holes; otherwise very good condition.

Folio. 1 p. and four lines on bifolium. List of expenses for extensive fortification works executed in June, 1800 on Roda island ("isle de Raouda") located on the Nile in Cairo. The total costs, including the wages of a water carrier and a cameleer, amouted to 72,848 francs that were comfortably within the budget of 84,000 francs. - After the assassination on 14 June 1800 of General Jean-Baptiste Kléber, who had been in command of the "Armée d'orient" since Napoleon's departure, the collapse of the French occupation of Egypt was imminent. The Anglo-Ottoman offensive started in March 1801 and reached Cairo by May. On 22 June the French garrison under Augustin Daniel Belliard surrendered and withdrew to Alexandria. The siege of Alexandria from 17 August to 2 September put an end to the Egyptian campaign with the remaining French troops, including Malus, being repatriated to France on British ships according to the terms of the capitulation agreement. - Étienne-Louis Malus was trained to become a military engineer at the École royale du génie de Mézières and the École Polytechnique in Paris. In 1796 he joined the Engineers Corps of the revolutionary army and quickly ascended the ranks. His scientific career started during the Egyptian campaign when he became a member of the newly founded Institut d'Égypte. 4to. 1 p. Beautiful and content-rich letter to an unnamed philosopher and theologian who was working on a not further specified theological book. Mamiani apologizes for a delayed response due to an ailment of his eyes and congratulates the recipient on his choice of topic, lauding his erudition extensively: "In voi ho sempre ammirato una perfetta armonia dell'ingegno e dell'animo ne conosco scrittore che ponga negli studi quella intenzione pura del bene e quella religione del vero che si scorge ad ogni pagina de' vostri libri. Io mi rallegro pertanto con voi e con la, filosofia sulla scelta che fatta avete del tema della nuova opera vostra. Voi la compirete del sicuro con gran coscienza e recherà gran lume ad ogni ragion di persone." - Originally attached was a brief outline "of the main strands of religious thought as it is cultivated today in Italy by its few philosophers" and a small publication by Mamiani, "which has some relation to the subject and which has produced a lively impression in Rome itself" (transl.). - As a leading participant in the unrest in Bologna following the election of Pope Gregory XVI in 1831, Mamiani went to exile in Paris until 1848, when the revolutionaries forced Pope Pius IX to allow the Count to return to Rome and become Minister of the Interior in the newly formed government. In the wake of the proclamation of the short-lived Roman Republic in 1849, Mamiani went to Genova, where he committed himself to the project of Italian unification. In 1860, he became minister of education of the Kingdom of Sardinia under Cavour. For the newly established Kingdom of Italy, Mamiani took on diplomatic duties, first in Greece from 1863 and then in Switzerland from 1865 until his retirement in 1867.
