To the London barrister Frank Blandy, who had wanted to arrange a meeting with Mayne Reid, asking him what the request was about: "I owe you an apology for not having written to say that I was hindered by circumstances, from going up to London, as I had intended ere this. I am still uncertain as to when I may get to the metropolis, therefore if you will kindly give me some idea of the queries, upon which you desire to see me, […]“. - Thomas Mayne Reid emigrated to the U.S. in 1840, aged 22. After various employments in different parts of the country he started his literary career in 1842 as a journalist for the Pittsburgh Morning Chronicle. In 1843 he moved to Philadelpha for three years, working as a journalist. There he met Egar Allan Poe, who became a drinking companion. Mayne Reid joined the First New York Volunteer Infantry during the Mexican-American War (1846-48), also working as a correspondent. He was severely wounded at the Battle of Chapultepec on 13 September 1847. In 1850 he moved to London and started publishing his immensely popular adventure novels, mostly inspired by the American West. - Traces of folds. With rust stain from a removed staple. Die Bildseite zeigt den Passionsdarsteller im Rollenkostüm kniend bei dem Oberammergauer Passionsspiel, auf der Versoseite signiert. - "Für Ludwig II. leisteten sich die Oberammergauer, nach Münchner Beispiel, eine Sondervorstellung. Dafür empfing der Märchenkönig die Spieler in seinem nahebei im Graswangtal erstandenen Schloss Linderhof. Er schenkte jedem einen Silberlöffel (nur Judas bekam einen aus Blech), befreite den Christusdarsteller Joseph Mayer vom Kriegsdienst in Frankreich und spendete der Gemeinde die Kreuzigungsgruppe des Bildhauers Halbig, von der sich beim Transport am Ettaler Berg die 40 Zentner schwere Johannesfigur löste und zwei Steinmetze tötete. Immer wieder hatten die Oberammergauer ihr gewisses Kreuz mit der Passion, auch wenn sie alle zehn Jahre jubeln und Kasse machen konnten" (Karl Stankiewitz: Mir ging eine neue Welt auf. Die Ränder etwas wellig, unregelmäßig beschnitten bzw. lädiert. - Der Kammersänger Mayr glänzte 1911 bei der Uraufführung des "Rosenkavaliers" als "Ochs auf Lerchenau"; seine Wiederholung dieser Rolle an der Covent Garden Opera in London (1924) bildete den Auftakt für seine internationale Karriere. Von insgesamt 95 verschiedenen Opernrollen waren die Figuren des "Ochs" (149), des "Pogner" aus den Meistersingern (138), des "Landgraf Hermann" aus Tannhäuser (123) sowie des "König Marke" aus Tristan (101 Auftritte) die von ihm am häufigsten verkörperten Rollen.

This document is a death certificate which is notified to Turkish Gendarmerie Command of Bakirköy. Signed by Mazhar Osman Uzman as 'bastabip' [i.e. chief physician]. Mazhar Osman was a mental diseases specialist, physician who founded the first modern Turkish mental health hospital in Turkey. Bakirköy Psychiatric Hospital (Bakirköy Mazhar Osman Mental Health and Neurological Diseases Education and Research Hospital), is a mental health hospital of the Health Ministry located in Bakirköy district of Istanbul, Turkey. The hospital is named after Mazhar Osman, who is also considered as the founder of modern psychiatry in Turkey. It was established with the initiative of Dr. Mazhar Osman (1884-1951) and approval of Minister of Health Refik Saydam (1881-1942) in the premises of Resadiye Barracks at Bakirköy, Istanbul on October 15, 1924.

Small 8vo. Altogether 7 pp. on 4 double leaves. One letter to his sister (15. II. 1870), one to Sig. Nova, one to Stefano, and one to an unnamed "amici". - Accompanied by a lithographic portrait; mostly written on very thin paper with small damages to edges and traces of mounting. - Letter to the "amici" / friends from the end of the first page to the end of the letter: "Come dissi fin da quando ci vedevamo la / prima volta, non posso negare che mi sorge / spesso dentro il pensiero: 'Se vediamo che / il sorgere di Piac. presenti l'opportunità alle / città d'Italia, perché non lo potrà il sorgere di / Genova?' Non posso a meno di ripetere / questo pensiero; ma più in là non vedo. L'amico vi dirà dell'Ufficiale che lo / veduto questa mattina. Appena io abbia notizie, le avviso. Se per / caso credete di determinarvi a fare, avvertite-/mi senza indugio. Darò allora i proclami e vi / vedrò subito. Il Governo ha evidentemente paura. E non / osa appigliarsi a misure anteriormente repres-/sive. V' è agitazione, come sapete, anche nel / macinato. Il Governo nondimeno presente il moto da / parte nostra. E questo potrebbe forse modificare / il disegno e dare più importanza alla mia / idea d'assalire le ali, procacciare armi e / portar poi le forze concentrate ed eccitate da / una vittoria sul centro. 1 p., in-8. Belle lettre de 16 lignes à Charles Vincens de la belle écriture violette de Pierre Maël, peu de temps avant sa mort. "Bien que souffrant", Maël tient à remercier son correspondant pour ce qu'il a "fait en faveur de Rose Héré". En effet, Rose Héré a sauvé du naufrage 14 marins marseillais du navire Le Vesper le 1er novembre 1903, après être tombée à l'eau en voulant les diriger, tout cela au large d'Ouessant. L'académie de Marseille, en raison de l'origine des marins, lui donnera un prix qui mettra "cette pauvre fille […] jusqu'à la fin de ses jours à l'abri du besoin". Pierre Maël remercie aussi Charles Vincens pour l'article sur son roman Fleur des roses.
