1797. Fine. 30 fructidor 1797 An V 16 septembre 1897 18.50 x 21.30 cm 3 pages sur un double feuillet Extremely rare autograph letter signed «Restif Labretone» addressed to Citoyenne Fontaine. Three pages written in black ink on a double sheet of laid paper. Remains of a wax seal folds inherent to mailing. This letter was published with some inaccuracies in Lettres inédites de Restif de Labretone by V. Forest and É. Grimaud 1883. The Fontaine couple are merchants from Grenoble and Restif de la Bretonne began corresponding with them on March 15 1797. Important letter testifying to the completion of the publication of Restif's great autobiographical work: Monsieur Nicolas ou les Ressorts du Cœur Humain dévoilé. «I will have completed the Cœur humain Dévoilé within 15 days – I will prepare your package immediately to have it ready.» The first eight volumes of this great autobiographical work printed by Restif himself – a typesetter by trade – in his residence at 11 rue de la Bûcherie were entrusted to the «dishonest» bookseller Nicolas Bonneville who did not honor his debts to the writer. Besides health issues «I exchange my illnesses and do not cure them» Restif also shares with his correspondent his literary setbacks: «The Author of Nature will preserve a sincere friend for me to compensate for the scoundrels of the Institute and the perfidious Mercier». Indeed the previous year the author learned with bitterness that he was not admitted to the National Institute and Louis-Sébastien Mercier who had praised him in his Tableau de Paris and supported his candidacy then turned away from him. To this sum of misfortunes financial difficulties are added. Penniless and living on meager state pensions he maintains all his support for the Republic: «By what fatality do I never see the views of the rulers who welcome me; or how do they not see at once that I am attached to the Revolution to the point that I still love it even when it beats me.» Restif profoundly anti-royalist wrote several pamphlets to this effect and had just added to the end of Monsieur Nicolas an apology for the coup d'état of 18 Fructidor Year V. However this date marks the end of the allowance granted to him by Lazare Carnot after his failure at the Institute: «You know the events of 18 Fructidor; I will not speak to you about them. They have given me back my life; but by afflicting both my heart and my gratitude.»  But Restif's great sorrow is the loss of his daughter Filette born from his adventure with Louise Allan whose paternity was revealed to him only late: «I am writing to you from bed weeping over my Filette who died 11 months and ten days ago . Filette was my daughter and Louise's whose soul and beauty she had.»  Autograph letters signed by Restif de La Bretonne that have survived to this day are extremely rare. unknown

It is this mistrustful prudence, this wisdom that dictated, no doubt, the clear advice he gave to the beautiful Madelonne, insipid pecorist, and to Bayle, the old loner. Lettre en trois pages adressée à Henri Heugel concernant des "journaux" qui ne "sont pas d'accord au sujet de la Navarese et que vous ne saurez pas la vérité", il s'empresse donc de lui dire que la musique a triomphé et a fait forte impression même si l'exécution laissait à désirer. Il mentionne ensuite la mauvaise humeur du public contre la direction du théâtre, et bien qu'il était contact avec la direction du théâtre, cela ne s'est pas passer comme cela. Dimensions : 13.5 x 21 cm. 3 pages. Etat : Bon état de conservation. Déchirure partielle sur la pliure centrale. Nicolo Celega, né le 17 avril 1846 et mort le 17 juillet 1906, est un compositeur et musicien italien d'expression franco-italienne. Henri Heugel, né le 3 mai 1844 à Paris et mort le 11 mai 1916 dans la même ville, est l'auteur de plusieurs ouvrages littéraires estimés. Directeur de la maison d'éditions musicales le Ménestrel, il se retire en 1948, laissant les commandes à ses deux fils François et Philippe. En 1980, la maison Heugel est rachetée par les éditions Alphonse Leduc. Il fut nommé chevalier de la Légion d'honneur. Envoi soigné dans un emballage rigide et étanche. Satisfait ou remboursé. An einen Professor Walter, der augenscheinlich eine seiner Arbeiten begutachtet und manche Frage an ihn gestellt hatte, die hier nun beantwortet wird: "[...] Die abweichenden Jahreszahlen sind auch kein Druckfehler sondern gehen aus einer chronologischen Arbeit hervor die am Schluß des Bandes stehen wird: die Vorrede soll auf Sie verweisen [...] Um noch über die zugesandten Bogen eins zu bemerken: was bey dem agrarischen Rechte weggelassen ist [...] kommt als Beylage: es gehörte wohl nicht in den Körper des Werkes [...]". - Papierbedingt etwas gebräunt und mit einem kleinen Ausschnitt auf Bl. 2 durch Siegelbruch (dieses wohlerhalten).

Very rare letter by the great explorer, written (in German) to his publisher (possibly Nicolaus Möller in Copenhagen?), asking him to enlighten him as to the possible receipt of outstanding payments. Niebuhr writes that he would be interested to know whether "Messrs. van Ghelen, Brönner, and the Typographical Society in Berne [...] have paid. I do hope that it was not illness that prevented sending me an answer [...] I will, however, include here a list of what each and every gentleman is to pay. - Mr van Ghelen in Vienna owes, after having settled a bill, 54 Reichsthaler and 4 Groschen, and is instructed to pay me 2 Reichsthaler in Louisd'or on behalf of Professor [Maximilian] Hell [...] For 5 copies of the 'Reisebeschreibung nach Arabien', 1st volume, Mr Brönner in Frankfurt owes 5 Reichsthaler and 20 Groschen each [...] The Typographical Society in Berne owes payment for 4 copies of the 'Reisebeschreibung', part 1, at 5 Reichsthaler and 20 Groschen each, [...] and 4 Reichsthaler 4 Groschen for 1 copy of 'Beschreibung von Arabien'" (transl.). - Of the utmost rarity.

Wohl an einen Redakteur des "Kunstwart": "Gestatten Sie mir, daß ich mir erlaube, Ihnen eine Separatausgabe meiner unlängst in den 'Signalen' erschienenen, größeren Studie 'Die deutsche musikalische Renaissancebewegung des 19 Jhs.' zur gefl. Prüfung und Besprechung im KW ergebenst vorzulegen [...]". - Der Sohn des Komponisten Rudolph Niemann studierte in Leipzig Komposition bei Humperdinck und Reinecke und Musikwissenschaft bei Hugo Riemann. Nach seiner Promotion zunächst als Musikschriftsteller tätig, verfaßte er u. a. Biographien von Brahms und Sibelius und arbeitete als Musikkritiker für Leipziger Zeitungen. Später widmete er sich zunehmend - ab 1917 nahezu ausschließlich - der Komposition, wirkte aber auch als Pianist. - Mit schwarzem Trauerrand.

1 S. Qu.-8vo. Wohl für einen Autogrammsammler: “Hiermit erfülle ich Ihren Wunsch”. Schon als Kind am Theater ihrer Heimatstadt auftretend, begann ihre Bühnenlaufbahn 1859 am Hamburger Thalia-Theater. Nach Engagements am Wallnertheater in Berlin und am Wiener Burgtheater kam sie 1864 nach St. Petersburg. 1883 wurde die Gattin des Sängers Albert Niemann (1831-1917) Mitglied des Deutschen Theaters in Berlin, wo sie vorwiegend im Fach der Salondame und der Naiven eingesetzt war. - Montiert in alten Sammlungsumschlag.
