Fascinating lengthy explanation of how he came to write "Secrets of the Success of Great Musicians." In part: "Why was it for instance that some well educated intelligent person was not at all liked by the majority and indeed was a failure in life I soon discovered that lack of manners a repellant personality an easily recognizable egotism were responsible for this misfortune. Others again have been blessed with the divine spark of genius but they never reached prominence in life. Why In my investigations I found out that the reason for their lack of success was that they did not concentrate their efforts in that special branch for which they were gifted they lacked the 'stick to it' they were too erratic 'Jack of all trades master in none.' Others on the contrary although endowed with a very small amount of talent made for themselves an enviable name and obtained important and influential positions. Why Because they were indefatigable workers and compensated the lack of genius with their diligence and pertinacity." With original envelope. Accompanied by IP 4" X 6" New York NY 1925 n.d. "Ein Volk von so hohen geistigen Kräften schafft sich die Zukunft durch den Willen seines Wissens, durch die Macht seiner Ideen, durch die Waffen seines Denkens, durch die bezwingende Liebe seines Gefühls [...]". Die längere Sentenz wurde aufgenommen und bei der Veröffentlichung in Druckschrift wiedergegeben. - Emil Pirchan, zuerst Ausstattungsdirektor am Bayerischen Staatstheater, dann am Staatstheater in Berlin, wurde 1927 Dozent an der staatlichen Musikhochschule für darstellende Kunst in Berlin, wo er Bühnenbildkunst und Kostümlehre unterrichtete. - Mit gestemp. Piron, Alexis, French epigrammatist and dramatist (1689-1773).
Autograph letter signed ("Piron"). No place, 8. II. 1747.
Small 4to. 3 pp. Bifolium with address panel to verso. In French, to his brother Jean in Dijon, thanking him for having given him information about their "poor mother's" state of health and for looking after her. She is already an aged lady and so "it will be difficult for one springtime to mend the despair of 87 winters". Piron hopes that God will preserve their mother and keep his brother in good courage to support watching the sicknesses of body and spirit when being with her. Piron combines the comfort he gives to his brother with philosophical questions about God and finally talking about the state of Europe: "Nous avons attaqué la Reine d'Hongrie qui pour se venger y mangerà sa dernière chemise fut elle pleine de merde" ("We have attacked the Queen of Hungary who in order to take revenge would eat her last blouse even if it was full of shit"). - According to Piron, Europe is on fire and in the most terrible crisis. As his brother asked him for some news of Paris, Alexis Piron informs him about a big event which is going to take place the next day: Six chariots 30 feet long each that will ride through the streets of Paris. The first one represents love and marriage and will be equipped with beautiful instrumental music. The second one is in the shape of a ship. The third one will be chariot of Ceres loaded with bred that will be thrown to the people. The fourth one will be the chariot of Comus full of sausages, tongues and beef. The fifth one will be the chariot of Bacchus to serve drinkers. According to Piron, Panurge and Brother Jean would ask for another chariot of Venus full of "filles de joie" (daughters of joy). He describes luxurious life in Paris, sumptuous balls and ballets, a table to choose from 800 covers, all the gold and silver brocade in the stores of the city and all the jewels of the crown. Piron says that this is the misery of their time, an even greater misery than is to be found in the bourgeois garrisons with their weapons, lodgings and taxes. Piron ends his letter by assuring Jean that in times of war, plague and famine just as in times of peace and abundance he is and will remain his affectionate brother for all of his life. - Somewhat spotty and some damage to edges; some tears unprofessionally restored.

To the painter Claude Monet, thanking him for lending him 15,000 francs to pay a mortgage and announcing to write to his wife so she can let them know when the sum should be disbursed; also agreeing to lend Monet his painting "La cueillette des pois" in exchange, a work he planned to lend either to his friend or the Musée de Luxembourg, but the museum having taken too long to reply: "Je vous remercie de l'empressement que vous mettez à me rendre service. Moi non plus, je n'ai aucune idée sur les prêts sur Hypothèques et je crois en effet que ce serait plus simple de nous arranger ensemble. Cela me va parfaitement, je vais écrire à ma femme que vous tenez à Ma disposition 15 mille francs de vouloir bien nous dire pour quelle époque le versement, nous pourrons parfaire la somme facilement. Quant aux femmes qui ramassent des pois, c'est trop flatteur pour que je n'y sois pas sensible. J'étais du reste ennuyé de vous l'avoir refusé, je l'ai donné à ma femme avec la condition de le céder à un moment donné au Luxembourg si on me le demandait ou à vous. Certainement ma femme y consentira. Tant pis le Luxembourg a trop tardé, je serai enchanté que ce soit chez un ami. Voilà mon vieux camarade nous serons tous contents [...]". - In conclusion Pissarro considers his wife's idea to buy the house a curious one, but knows he would regret it to have refused her: "Enfin!! Drôle d'idée qu'a ma femme de vouloir acheter la maison, mais j'aurais des remords de la lui refuser [...]".

Nous voilà à la fin du mois, et mes dépenses vont être doublées le mois prochain. Je sais bien que ce moment est difficile, mais que faire? Je comptais recevoir 500F car par suite du loyer, nous avons eu peu de choses pour les dépenses de la maison [...]".

Juste au moment où je me dispose à faire mes malles, vous seriez bien aimable de venir me voir, j'ai pu éviter l'accident tous ces jours-ci car cela menacait plus ou moins enfin! Cette fois ça y est!! Je vous serre les mains". - Under his signature, Pissarro adds a brief postscript, giving the reason for the urgency of the matter: "Il faut cependant que je parte! Les fleurs vont disparaître!!!". - In very good condition; with central horizontal and vertical fold, a bit of mild toning, rusty paperclip mark along top edge, adhesive residue along left edge, and show-through from postmarks and printing on reverse.

Ich habe ein Buch geschrieben mit dem Titel: 'Das Lachen im Recht'. Es handelt sich hier um eine kulturhistorische Betrachtung über das Thema, das Otto von Gierke 1870 unter dem Titel: 'Der Humor im deutschen Recht' eingeführt hat. Von Gierke hat in der betreffenden Broschüre eine Betrachtung angestellt, aus welcher hervorgehen sollte, dass die alten Germanen so sehr mit ihrem Recht vertraut waren, dass sie in dem Recht ihr Gemüt und auch ihr Lachen äusserten. Von Gierke hat eine Reihe Nachfolger gefunden. Der Begriff: 'Der Humor im Recht' ist demzufolge gleichsam ein feststehender Begriff für den Rechtshistoriker geworden [...] In der Publikation, die vor ein paar Monaten unter dem Titel 'Das Lachen im Recht' erschien, habe ich meiner Meinung nach nachgewiesen, dass dieser Humor in der alten Gesetzgebung sich bei nähere[r] Betrachtung als niemals vorhanden gewesen erweist [...] Die Frage, die ich nun Ihrem geschätzten Urteil vorlege, ist, ob für diese Arbeit in Deutschland Interesse bestehen würde [...]" (a. d. 8vo. 1½ pp. Charming letter to the young historian Alberto Lumbroso, announcing that Lumbroso's manuscript "Un riscontro" will be published soon and encouraging him to continue with his folkloristic studies. Giuseppe Pitrè was apparently a close friend of the Lumbroso-family, as he mentions Alberto's better-known father Giacomo Lumbroso (1844-1925), intimately calling him "Papà", contrasting Giacomo's classical studies with Alberto's interest in folklore, "which, after all, is always ancient". The manuscript in question was probably published in Pitrè's Archivio per lo studio delle tradizioni popolari. He also thanks Alberto for a book on behalf of "Maria and Totò," probably two of his children. In closing, Pitrè expresses his hope that Giacomo Lumbroso will also contribute to the journal, as he is "rich in precious materials" and they are "poor workers of the Archivio", and exchanges family greetings. The beautiful letter in full: "Ho ricevuto e passato al tipografo il tuo ms. Un riscatto, e spero di mandartene presto le stampe. Vedi bene che io son contento di quello che fai pe[r] i nostri studi, e che seguo con amore ogni nuovo frutto del tuo bello ingegno. Coraggio e avanti! Pensa frattanto che come Papà studia il folklore antico di Roma, così tu potresti ricercare il folklore moderno, il quale, del resto, è sempre antico. Le novelle, gli esempi, le ciarpe non le ha raccolte nessuno ancora, altro che una signorina inglese e tu potrai non dico 'pigolare' ma mietere. Maria e Totò ricevettero il bel libro che tu hai loro regalato, e m'incaricano di ringraziartene tanto tanto. [...] Da un pezzo non leggo nulla di Papà. Oh perché non regala qualche cosa all'Archivio? In rund 500 wissenschaftlichen Publikationen beschäftigte er sich insbesondere mit der Erforschung des frühgeschichtlichen österreichischen Bergbaus und veröffentlichte u. a ‘Allgemeine Urgeschichte und Urgeschichte Österreichs’. Pittioni war Wirkliches Mitglied der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und redigierte die von ihm begründete Zeitschrift ‘Archaeologia Austriaca’ (1948-76). Vgl. Öst. Lex. II, 199.
