8vo. 6 pp. on 3 ff. With autograph envelope. In Italian, to Carlo Clausetti at Ricordi's, Naples, on Tosca and La Bohème. Master Pacchierotti, he writes, was bamboozled by Riccordi with the greatest deference, and had many words of encouragement for Ricordi. Puccini's work on Tosca will be ready in the year 2000, and performed at the Royal Theatre of Crete ("Io lavoro a Tosca chi sarà pronta il 2000 ce si darà alr R° teatro di Creta perche tutti i teatri sono di creta" [play on the name of the island Creta, and the word creta, clay]), a building worthy of a water-closet or a domestic theatre, depending on its size. Carlo is a very nice person, and not made of clay, although all the sons of Adam are descended from the same woman. He is always his tireless thurifer! And Puccini loves it. He writes to him with various little glasses of liquor in front of him; if they were together, he would give him a drink. He instructs him to greet Lombardi and tell him that Vanso will soon be going to Cuba. Carlo has to go to Bari to protect La Boheme, which seems to be in danger: his support will be needed to guide his beloved daughter to the port. Let him beware of baroque attacks ("assalti baresi")! - Small pinholes, otherwise in fine condition.

He was not very well and on the evening of the premiere he was exhausted, and forgot everything, and everyone. The show went very well: great ovation, especially in the second act. He is a little better now, and asks for forgiveness for his forgetfulness. But he is not well, he is too sad and the life he leads weighs on him.

With Puccini's autograph inscription to the Italian politician Settimio Costantini (1839-99), mayor of Teramo and a representative in the Chamber of Deputies. Puccini inscribed this copy of "La Bohème" - considered his masterpiece by many - a mere week after its first performance on 1 February 1896 at the Teatro Regio in Turin under the direction of the young Arturo Toscanini. - Some slight staining throughout, more pronounced in first leaves. Binding rubbed at extremeties. Spine professionally repaired using the original binding. From the collection of Pierre Bergé with his bookplate on the front pastedown.

8vo and oblong 12mo. Altogether 12 pages on 8 ff. 4 items written in violet ink, Paris, Grand Hôtel de Londres, 23 October to 12 December 1906 where dated. Stamp removed from one postcard with loss of text; two letters apparently incomplete. Five unpublished letters to Sybil Seligman, Puccini’s closest female friend and his most important advisor after Giulio Ricordi, and one to her husband David, reporting his arrival in Paris, the first rehearsal at the Opéra-Comique, and his expectation that the opera will be staged within about a month, which will leave too little time before his departure for New York, expressing his anguish at matters going from bad to worse with the soprano Marguerite Carré, for whom the title role is too demanding, admitting he is constrained from stating his position openly, for fear of ruining the forthcoming production of La Bohème, and that he is leaving it until as late as possible to give his blessing to the production, hoping his fears are not realized. He also discusses the book by Oscar Wilde (A Florentine Tragedy) that Sybil was going to send him, meetings with Maurice Vaucaire about Conchita, and his travel plans to Milan, Torre de Lago and New York, and writes to David Seligman, asking for Sybil to be allowed to attend the production in Paris ("Cara Sybil, angustie sopra angustie! Qui si va di male in peggio, passo indietro esigenze ridicole tutte a causa di Mme Carré la quale a mio parere ha un rôle troppo forte. Temo che non andremo in scena o mai o forse molto tardi. Dico mai perché m’aspetto all’ultimo momento quando si eseguirà l’opera [...] Figuratevi dunque in che stato d’animo io sia! E mia salute tanto male! [...]"). - The letters to Sybil are unpublished. Puccini clearly expresses his frustration with Marguerite Carré, who sang the title role in the French premiere of Madama Butterfly; it was staged at the Opéra-Comique on 28 December 1906 and established the opera in the definitive form in which it is usually performed today. Mme. Carré was the wife of the Director of the theatre, Albert Carré (who staged and produced the opera), but was clearly out of her depth. The letter to David Seligman is published, not quite complete, in V. Seligman, Puccini Among Friends, (1938), p. 3.

Redaction der Musikzeitschrift" [bis hierher durchstrichen] "Herrn Dr. Victor Joss" in Prag, Krakauergasse 18, d. i. der Komponist, Pianist und Schriftsteller Victor Joss (geb. 1869). - Heinrich Pudor studierte an dem von seinem Vater Friedrich geleiteten "Königlichen Landeskonservatorium für Musik" in Dresden später in Leipzig Psychologie, Philosophie und Kunstgeschichte. Anfangs als Musiker tätig, wandte er sich später der Schriftstellerei und Publizistik zu. In den 1890er Jahren veröffentlichte er unter seinem Pseudonym "Heinrich Scham" zahlreiche Aufsätze über Freikörperkultur und über Sexualität, seit 1905 auch antisemitische Schriften. In seinen lebensreformatorischen Schriften stark von K. W. Diefenbach beeinflusst, propagierte er Reform- statt Kulturkleidung, wurde Mitarbeiter von Georg v. Schönerers Zeitschrift "Unverfälschte deutsche Worte" und gab seit 1906 die Zeitschrift "Kultur der Familie. Illustrierte Monatsschrift für die wirtschaftlichen, sozialen, geistigen und künstlerischen Interessen der Familie" heraus. Obgleich Sympathisant der NS-Ideologie, geriet Pudor in Konflikt mit der NSDAP und der deutschen Reichsschrifttumskammer, die seine Schriften in den 1930er Jahren als unerwünscht beschlagnahmen ließ.

Je suis de ceux qui croient que l'art n'a pas de patrie, mais je suis aussi de ceux qui savent bien que l'art en Allemand ne peut être nationalisé en France [...]". - With a short note in a former collector's hand giving the name of the recipient: "M. This American industrialist and engineer is famed for the luxurious Pullman sleeping car for the Chicago-area town he built around his company Pullman "The World's Most Perfect Town" -- and for the disastrous 1894 Pullman strike. On a 4 3/4" X 2 3/4" slip on which is penned a large "Autograph Signature of / New York Nov. 6th 1872" in brown ink Pullman adds his huge signature between those two lines. Very good. Faintly age toned; mounting traces on verso. An attractive example of this scarce signature. unknown

Zechen | Trinke Du sie gar | Dankbar daß in Deinem Becher | Oben Lautres war. | Nur dem Werthesten der Gäste | Schenkt's der Wirth bei diesem Feste | Bis zum Grundeklar". - Gewidmet "meinem alten geehrten Freund Castelli" [d. i. der Schriftsteller Ignaz Franz Castelli (1781-1862)]. - Therese Pulszky, die Tochter eines Wiener Bankiers, hatte zusammen mit ihrem Gatten, dem Schriftsteller und Politiker Ferenc Pulszky (1814-1897), Lajos Kossuth - der seit 1849 im Londoner Exil lebte - auf dessen Rundreise durch Amerika begleitet und gemeinsam mit ihrem Gatten den Reisebericht ""White, red, black" (London 1852, 3 Bde.; deutsch, Kassel 1853, 5 Bde.) darüber verfaßt; sie selbst veröffentlichte "Aus dem Tagebuche einer ungarischen Dame" (Leipzig 1850) und "Sagen und Erzählungen aus Ungarn" (Berlin 1851). 1866 begab sie sich in Begleitung ihrer Tochter nach Ungarn, "um die Zurücknahme ihrer Vermögenskonfiskation zu betreiben", und erkrankte zu Ofen an der Cholera. Als ihr Mann Ferenc im September 1866 von der österreichischen Regierung die Erlaubnis zu einer Reise nach Ofen erhielt, fand er aber "Frau wie Tochter bei seiner Ankunft bereits gestorben" (Meyers Konversationslexikon, 4. Auflage, 1885-1892, Bd. XIII., S. 459).

(1833-1870): "In Beantwortung Ihrer so freundlichen Zeilen [...] muß ich vor Allem betonen, daß die, in meinem Aufsa[t]ze über Ihr Werk ausgesprochene Ansicht, der Ausdruck meiner wahrsten Überzeugung ist, und es freut mich zufällig jetzt in der Lage zu sein, dies dem Autor wiederholen zu können [...]". - Pundschu war seit seiner Promotion als Regimentsarzt tätig; ein Jahr vor seinem Tod wurde er zum Stabsarzt befördert. "Lungenleidend erreichte er seine Versetzung in das mildere Klima von Trient, wo er nach halbjährigem Aufenthalte starb. In weiteren Kreisen ist der ungewöhnlich thätige Arzt durch die mehrjährige Herausgabe des Jahrbuchs der Militärärzte bekannt geworden" (ADB XXVI, 710). - Rudolf Rt. von Vivenot jun., der älteste Sohn aus der ersten Ehe des weithin gerühmten Wiener Mediziners selben Namens (1807-84) mit Josefine Baronin Metzburg (1810-38) und Bruder des Historikers Alfred (1836-74) aus Rudolf sen. zweiter Ehe mit Antonie von Bergenthal (1820-46), zählt zu den Pionieren der "experimentell-physiologischen Richtung der Klimatologie" in Wien. Gedr. Formular, von Sekretärshand ausgefüllt. 1 S. Qu.-Folio. Schermbrief für "Michl Fritz und Theresia dessen Ehewirthin", denen einige zum Gut Hainfeld dienstbare Liegenschaften gegen jährlichen Zins zur Bewirtschaftung übergeben werden. - Der zum Kreis der österreichischen Kantianer zählende Purgstall hatte bereits in jungen Jahren Kant in Königsberg besucht; nach seiner Rückkehr nach Österreich trat er "zunächst als Volontär bei der niederösterreichischen Regierung in den Staatsdienst und sein Haus ward in Wien bald ein Vereinigungspunkt aller Elemente, welche höhere Bildung und vaterländisches Gefühl verbanden" (ADB XXVI, 716). 1809 wurde er Generalintendant des Heeres von Innerösterreich und von den Franzosen gefangengenommen. Obwohl bald freigelassen, hatte die Kerkerhaft in Mantua seine Gesundheit zerstört, und er starb noch nicht vierzigjährig in Florenz. Sein einziger Sohn Wenzel Raphael überlebte ihn nur um wenige Jahre. Da mit diesem die Linie der Grafen von Purgstall erloschen war, hinterließ die Witwe Gottfrieds dem befreundeten Orientalisten Joseph von Hammer das Gut Hainfeld und den Namen des Hauses Purgstall, welches er an 1836 führte.

1 S. Qu.-8vo. Anfangs Sängerin, trat die Schauspielerin später in Sprechrollen am Theater an der Wien, am Fürsttheater sowie am Wiener Stadttheater auf. Vgl. DBA I 986, 429. - Heinrich Laube war von 1849 bis 1867 Direktor des Wiener Burgtheaters, "das unter ihm eine Glanzzeit erlebte" (Öst. Lex. I, 684). 1867 aus dem Amt wegen Kompetenzstreitigkeiten mit dem neuen Intendanten ausscheidend, gründete er 1872 das neue Wiener Stadttheater, das er mit einer kurzen Unterbrechung bis 1880 leitete. - In altem Sammlungsumschlag.

"Gang- und gäbe Phrasen unseres constitutionellen Zeitalters. || Das Princip - ist die Theorie, die Moral, das Sollen - die Tugend | Praxis, Op[p]ortunität, führen zum fait accomplit. | Führen gar oft zur Sünde, zum Unglück, zu grausem Verbrechen, | Doch des Frommen Sinn sieht nur das Gute darin. | Wenn das Meer im Frieden dahinwallt, glaubst du, der Sturm wars | Welcher die Flotte verschlang, der nun den Frieden gebracht? | Doch ists wahr: die Menschheit erhebt sich stets jung aus dem Tode, | Und wer das Leben gewann freut sich des goldenen Lichts [...]". - Purkinje is known for his discovery of Purkinje fibres, the fibrous tissue that conducts electrical impulses to all parts of the ventricles of the heart. Other discoveries include Purkinje images, reflections of objects from structures of the eye, and the Purkinje shift, the change in the brightness of red and blue colours as light intensity decreases gradually at dusk. Purkyne also introduced the scientific terms "plasma" and "protoplasm". During the last years of his life (from which thre present quotation dates), Purkinje "repeatedly stressed the importance of science and knowledge in practical life. His work [...] was of great importance in the Czech national revival and exerted a lasting effect on the subsequent development of science in his country" (DSB XI, 217).

Oblong 8vo (postcard). 1 page. Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Mit einem freundlichen Gruße hier mein Autogramm! [...]". - A student and friend of Henri Matisse, Purrmann co-founded the Paris painting school "Académie Matisse" and operated the German art foundation at the Villa Romana in Florence from 1935, his oeuvre comprising still lifes, nudes, portraits and light-flooded southern landscapes. - Some traces of folds, most prominent near lower left corner; a few small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.

(Mskpt.). 8vo. “Anliegend übersende ich Die Konvenienzheirath im Dorfe | Die Verbannung aus dem elterl[ichen] Hause | Die Muse v[on] ob d. ennsich[en] Dorfe | D[er] allein stehende Jüngling | D[as] wohl gerathene Süd Bier | Die Hausordonnanz | und bitte, nach gewonnener Abschrift die Originalien mir wieder zu schicken [...]”. - Das beiliegende Manuskript umfaßt nicht alle der genannten Gedichte in einer Abschrift von fremder Hand, allein ‘Die Hausordonnanz’, ‘Die Verbannung aus dem elterl[ichen] Hause’, ‘Die Konvenienzheirath im Dorfe’ und ‘Das wohl gerathene Süd Bier’ sind hier vorhanden. Auf vier Bll. finden sich rechts oben kurze Titel aus der Hand Purschkas. - Norbert Purschka war seit 1873 als Pfarrer in Waldneukirchen tätig und gilt neben Franz Stelzhamer - mit dem ihn eine innige Freundschaft verband - als einer der führenden oberösterreichischen Mundartdichter.
