‎Purgstall, Gottfried Wenzel Graf, Staatsmann und Militär (1773-1812).‎

‎Schirmbrief mit eigenh. U. Hainfeld, 15. V. 1797.‎

‎Gedr. Formular, von Sekretärshand ausgefüllt. 1 S. Qu.-Folio. Schermbrief für "Michl Fritz und Theresia dessen Ehewirthin", denen einige zum Gut Hainfeld dienstbare Liegenschaften gegen jährlichen Zins zur Bewirtschaftung übergeben werden. - Der zum Kreis der österreichischen Kantianer zählende Purgstall hatte bereits in jungen Jahren Kant in Königsberg besucht; nach seiner Rückkehr nach Österreich trat er "zunächst als Volontär bei der niederösterreichischen Regierung in den Staatsdienst und sein Haus ward in Wien bald ein Vereinigungspunkt aller Elemente, welche höhere Bildung und vaterländisches Gefühl verbanden" (ADB XXVI, 716). 1809 wurde er Generalintendant des Heeres von Innerösterreich und von den Franzosen gefangengenommen. Obwohl bald freigelassen, hatte die Kerkerhaft in Mantua seine Gesundheit zerstört, und er starb noch nicht vierzigjährig in Florenz. Sein einziger Sohn Wenzel Raphael überlebte ihn nur um wenige Jahre. Da mit diesem die Linie der Grafen von Purgstall erloschen war, hinterließ die Witwe Gottfrieds dem befreundeten Orientalisten Joseph von Hammer das Gut Hainfeld und den Namen des Hauses Purgstall, welches er an 1836 führte.‎

Other discoveries include Purkinje images, reflections of objects from structures of the eye, and the Purkinje shift, the change in the brightness of red and blue colours as light intensity decreases gradually at dusk. Purkyne also introduced the scientific terms "plasma" and "protoplasm". During the last years of his life (from which thre present quotation dates), Purkinje "repeatedly stressed the importance of science and knowledge in practical life. His work [...] was of great importance in the Czech national revival and exerted a lasting effect on the subsequent development of science in his country" (DSB XI, 217).‎

(Mskpt.). 8vo. “Anliegend übersende ich Die Konvenienzheirath im Dorfe | Die Verbannung aus dem elterl[ichen] Hause | Die Muse v[on] ob d. ennsich[en] Dorfe | D[er] allein stehende Jüngling | D[as] wohl gerathene Süd Bier | Die Hausordonnanz | und bitte, nach gewonnener Abschrift die Originalien mir wieder zu schicken [...]”. - Das beiliegende Manuskript umfaßt nicht alle der genannten Gedichte in einer Abschrift von fremder Hand, allein ‘Die Hausordonnanz’, ‘Die Verbannung aus dem elterl[ichen] Hause’, ‘Die Konvenienzheirath im Dorfe’ und ‘Das wohl gerathene Süd Bier’ sind hier vorhanden. Auf vier Bll. finden sich rechts oben kurze Titel aus der Hand Purschkas. - Norbert Purschka war seit 1873 als Pfarrer in Waldneukirchen tätig und gilt neben Franz Stelzhamer - mit dem ihn eine innige Freundschaft verband - als einer der führenden oberösterreichischen Mundartdichter. ‎Savage Club Menu for the 1929 House Dinner signed by the Chairman Tom Purvis with original cartoon sketch‎

‎On the verso of the menu the Savage Club cartoonist evidently portrays Tom Purvis in his former guise as a member of the Artists' Rifles in action during WW1 with his paint brush and easel not his rifle. In the wide margin of the printed image Tom Purvis has added a humorous signed pencil sketch of a cursing British Tommy looking on in shock. Tom Purvis studied at the Camberwell School of Art he served with the Artists' Rifles in France during WW1. From 1923 he was heavily involved in the creation of art work advertising especially for LNER. By the late 1930s he was described as the " biggest name in British commercial design.". Very Good. An ein Fräulein aus Wien mit einem Eindruck aus Italien, das sich eben im Ersten Unabhängigkeitskrieg befand und wohin er im Januar des Jahres zu einer Kavaliersreise aufgebrochen war, und die Revolution: "[...] Meine Reise kürzte sich nun sehr. Rom verließ ich im Maerz, Neapel den 16ten May, tags nach der Revolution, deren blutiger Eindruck die letzten Stunden in diesem zauberischen Orte trübte. Wie anders fand ich mein Deutschland wieder, wie schmerzlich sah ich mich enttäuscht, und meine Begeisterung für die neue Zeit, wie voreilig. Alles das sah ich in Frankfurt ein, wo ein zweimonatlicher Aufenthalt mich in die deutschen Verhältnisse einweihte [...]". - Nach einem erfolgreichen Debut als Lustspielautor aus dem Regierungsdienst austretend, verfaßte der promovierte Jurist in Folge zahlreiche, an französischen Vorbildern (vor allem Eugène Scribe) orientierte Lustspiele und verschiedene Prosaarbeiten. Sein Märchenidyll "Was sich der Wald erzählt" (1850) erlebte bis zur Jahrhundertwende 50 Auflagen und zahlreiche Übersetzungen. Auch veröffentlichte Putlitz Autobiographisches sowie eine kommentierte Ausgabe der Briefe und Tagebuchaufzeichnungen Karl Immermanns; von 1863-67 war er Intendant des Hoftheaters in Schwerin, seit 1873 in der gleichen Funktion in Karlsruhe tätig.‎

‎8vo (104), oblong 8vo (2), oblong 12mo (1), 136 x 33 mm (1). A total of 239 pp. on 50 bifolia and 59 single leaves. One letter with autograph address on verso. Remarkable political correspondence from the exile to Maurice Lachâtre. Pyat, sentenced to death by the 3rd War Council on 28 March 1873, took refuge in London. Lachâtre, to be deported to a fortified compound, fled to Spain in December 1873. Following the amnesty (11 July 1880), the two outlaws, returned in France, co-directed "La Commune", a socialist newspaper (45 issues, 21 Sept.-4 Nov. 1880). - 1872: Pyat recounts his flight from Paris to London and deplores France's state of despondency. - He advises against a return from Spain and attests to horrors committed during the fall of the Commune. Pyat notes the desired conditions for publishing a history of the Commune, combining a newspaper, collaborating with the printer Juste Vernouillet, pros and cons of publishing in Paris or Brussels. Under the pseudonym "Solange" he considers the lifting of the state of siege, weighs the interest of a rapid or deferred publication of the history and the newspaper, and underlines risks to the country. He speaks of help for the outlaws, urges Lachâtre to keep away from the rigors of Thiers, shows interest in other Lachâtre authors (including Karl Marx and Eugène Sue), and makes political predictions: the monarchists, he says, would rally around Thiers, and political opinion would become more radical. - 1873: Pyat promises to provide souvenirs for Lachâtre's biography of Sue, is alarmed at Lachâtre's idea of returning home to Thiers' "orgy of blood", and reacts with ironic pride to his condemnation by the Council of War. He worries about Lachâtre due to the conditions in Spain. Pyat mentions how Thiers' fall corresponds to the laws of political science and invokes quarrels among the international (Vésinier, Landeck, Vaillant, Arnault, etc.). - 1874: Pyat sets out his observations on Castelar's fall and the Spanish Bourbon restoration, as well as on Lachâtre's setbacks in Belgium. - 1875: Pyat communicates a letter by Garibaldi (two ms. copies attached) for the press "for French propaganda". He considers a newspaper proposal. The justice of Paris turns out to be the triumph of the murderers. He debates the project of an exile newspaper, mentioning "La Voix du procrit" of Ledru and "Le Nouveau Monde" of Louis Blanc. - 1876: the amnesty was spoiled. He fights Lachâtre's hesitations to invest in a French newspaper, recalls the success of "Le Combat", and comments on the clumsiness of human rights. - 1877: his friend Gambon has told him about Lachâtre's plan of moving to Naples. Pyat would only agree to direct Duportal's "La Marseillaise" under a different title and with an adopted focus, criticizing the paper's unclear policies. - 1878: Pyat discusses their newspaper "La Commune", finances, seizure of the first issues, a guarantee for the citizen Castelnau, a friend and collaborator of Delescluze, summonses by the correctional police for non-payment of a fine, complaints about Dr Lux and the administrator Avenant. Several times he refers to Lachâtre's safe conduct to Paris. - 1879: New reflections on the amnesty. Versailles had no right to punish, no right to pardon; the outlaw's duty is to return only if he can win his cause and make the others return. Pyat urged Lachâtre to return to launch the newspaper; he was not mistaken: no amnesty. Pyat considers "Le Travail", in regard to declaration, title, administration, drafting (Rogeard, Gambon, Cluseret, Reclus, Protot, etc.). He hopes that General de Wimpffen will pardon Lachâtre. He gives advice in case of Lachâtre's reprieve and return, and receives emotionally the portrait of a martyr who redeems mankind. He warns of an agreement with Blanqui, whose "La Patrie" in danger proves that he is not the best journalist, and advises for caution until after the vote of the Senate. - Includes 2 ms. (copy): Pyat's Speech (Faubourg St.-Antoine, 14 Nov. 1869), declaration of the 1869 amnesty, which is sworn to the people, not to the Emperor; "Felix Pyat and the Tuileries" (London, 25 Jan. 1877), addressed to the editor of the "Standard", on Pyat's role in the Commune. An einen nicht namentlich genannten Adressaten aus dem Umfeld Maria Theresias, einen Einsatz der Pontoniers in Bratislava betreffend: "Encore une conjuration de ne pas repondre a celle cy, car je n'ai voulu que vous infomer que ma lettre derniere estoit deja ecrite et cacheté, lorsque sa Majs. m'envoya les paquets de gratifications a distribuer aux Officiers Pontoniers. Mais le gracieux Billet que j'eus en meme tems, vous n'en savez donc rien? Je supose que Sa Majte. vous l'aura bien dit. Si je devez vous en parler selon mon enthousiasme, je ne finirois point a m'entendre sur sa Clemence, sur ma consolation. Cela m'a penetré et me ravi encore, ce qui fairoit que vous devriez suspendre votre travail dans les affaires interessantes de Notre Adorable Souveraine, pour lire tout cela d'un bout a l'autre. [...]". - Offenbar mussten die Pontoniers infolge eines Donauhochwassers eine Brücke errichten oder andere Pionierarbeiten durchführen, wofür sie Gratifikationen der Kaiserin erhalten sollten. Der namentlich genannte Offizier kann mit Ludwig Rudolph Freiherr Ripke (1723-96) identifiziert werden, der 1763 zum Kommandanten des Pontonier-Regiments ernannt worden war. Von dem ansonsten unbekannten Wasserbauingenieur S. Hubert zeugen dessen Berichte zum Zustand der Donau von 1768 bis 1771 im Hofkammerarchiv (F 325) und ein Plan zur Regulierung des Wienflusses 1769/70 in der Ungarischen Nationalbibliothek (TK 373, Terkeptar, ST, 66). - Mit Empfängernotizen in Tinte, u. a.: "Rapporté le 19. à S. M.té l'Imperatrice et Reine". Auf Briefpapier mit Goldschnitt und dem Wasserzeichen einer Iglauer Papiermühle, datiert 1764. Gefaltet.‎
