Photogravure Of A Portrait Of William Loeb Jr. Inscribed In Ink "To Rudolph Forster In Memory Of Our Pleasant Association At The White House And With The Good Wishes W. Loeb Jr. March 4 1909." The Inscription Occurred Just Before Roosevelt Left Office. " In 1888 Loeb Was Elected Official Stenographer Of The Lower House Of The New York Legislature And Over The Years Gained Political Experience And Acquaintances Serving As Private Secretaries To The Lieutenant-Governor President Pro Tempore Of The State Senate Speaker Of The Assembly And To 1891 Candidate For Governor Jacob Sloat Fassett. When Theodore Roosevelt Became Governor Of New York He Was Appointed As One Of His Official Stenographers. His Ability To Do Things Without Specific Instructions And His Familiarity With Public Officials And Affairs Attracted Roosevelt's Notice And Leob Became His Private Secretary In 1899. On September 14 1901 On The Night President William Mckinley Was Assassinated Loeb Met Vice President Roosevelt During His Dash To Buffalo At The North Creek New York Train Station Delivering The Telegram From Secretary Of State John Hay Announcing Mckinley's Death At 2:15 That Morning. In The White House He Served As Assistant Secretary To The President From 1901 To 1903 And Then Succeeded George B. Cortelyou As Secretary To The President In 1903 Where He Stayed By The President's Side For The Rest Of Roosevelt's Time In Office. Loeb Was A Very Intimate Aide To Roosevelt And Was One Of The Era's Most Powerful Figures. As Roosevelt's Principal Advisor He Participated In Shaping Policy And Solving Political Problems. Acting As The President's Public Alter-Ego He Unofficially Became The Nation's First Presidential Press Secretary As Loeb Was Empowered To Speak For The President And Reporters Were Able To Contact Him Twenty-Four Hours A Day. Known To Those In The Press As "Stonewall Loeb" He Controlled Access To The President In An Unprecedented Fashion Dealing With The Queries Of Most Of The President's Visitors Without Their Ever Having To Disturb Him. When Roosevelt Took To Learning Judo Then Known As Jiu-Jitsu From Yamashita Yoshiaki In March And April 1904 And Trained In The White House Loeb And The President's Japanese Naval Attaché Isamu Takeshita Were His Training Partners. Roosevelt Once Described Him As "The Best Secretary That Any President Ever Had". In Addition In His Own Autobiography Roosevelt Stated That Loeb Was Responsible For Starting The Investigations Into The Frauds Committed By The Sugar Trust In New York's Custom House. He Also Played A Part In Aligning The 1908 Republican National Convention Behind The Nomination Of William H. Taft. In January 1908 He Brought It To The President's Attention That There Was No Front-Runner For The Republican Nomination To Succeed Him And That Many Republican Leaders In The United States Congress Were Under The Suspicion That Roosevelt Had Every Intention Of Running For A Third Term. Leob Urged The President That He Would Only Be Able To Sustain The Credibility Of His Pledge Not To Run Again By Endorsing A Candidate. Loeb Told Roosevelt That Any Nominee Could Win If Only He Would Back Him. In Response Roosevelt Said That He Would Favor Elihu Root And Authorized Loeb At That Moment To Go To See Root And Make The Offer Of His Endorsement. Root Then Secretary Of State Was Astonished By The Endorsement But Did Not Accept It Because He Judged Himself To Be Unelectable. Loeb Reported Back To The President That Same Day To Report On His Meeting. Roosevelt Accepted Root's Decision And Told Loeb That His Choice Then Was William Howard Taft Saying That He Had The Experience To Run The Government. Per Wikipedia Charles Wakefield Cadman 1881 - 1946 Was An American Composer. For 40 Years He Worked Closely With Nelle Richmond Eberhart Who Wrote Most Of The Texts To His Songs Including Four American Indian Songs. She Also Wrote The Librettos For His Five Operas Two Of Which Were Based On Indian Themes. He Composed In A Wide Variety Of Genres. He Was Greatly Influenced By American Indian Music Which He Had Been Studying Especially Through The Work Of Ethnologists Alice Fletcher And Francis La Flesche. Fletcher And La Flesche Had Studied The Omaha Tribe And Recorded Their Music And Stories. Having Published Several Articles On American Indian Music Cadman Became Regarded As One Of The Foremost Experts On The Subject. In 1908 He Began Touring To Present Lectures Known As The "Indian Talk" Or "Indian Music Tour" Accompanied By The Performance Of Native American Music And His Own Compositions. Tsianina Redfeather Muscogee / Cherokee Billed As "Princess Redfeather" Performed As A Singer On Some Of His Tours. Her Signature Song Was Cadman's "From The Land Of The Sky-Blue Water". Another Such Song Was "At Dawning" Which Became Widely Known In The 1920S. Cadman Toured Both The Us And Europe For 25 Years To Present This Lecture. Cadman Drew From Omaha And Iroquois Songs For His Four American Indian Songs Op. 45 Which Became His First Commercial Success In 1909. This Was Aided By Performances Of These Songs By Noted Soprano Lillian Nordica Who Was On A Concert Tour. In The Summer Of 1909 He Went To Nebraska To Study The Music And Traditional Instruments Of The Omaha And Winnebago Tribes. He Lived With The People On Their Reservations Learning To Play Their Instruments. During His Trip To The West He Met Francis La Flesche An Omaha Ethnologist Who Was Working With The Smithsonian Institution On Studies Of The Omaha And Osage Peoples. Cadman Assisted Him In Making Recordings On Wax Cylinders Of Traditional Songs. These Works Are Now Held By The Library Of Congress And Some 60 Songs Are Available Online. Cadman Drew From La Flesche's Recordings And He Was Also Interested In His Stories Collected From These Peoples. They Began Work That Year On An Opera; Cadman Had Already Started To Pull Melodies From Three Printed Collections Of Omaha And Pawnee Music Published By Ethnologist Alice Cunningham Fletcher Who Also Was With The Smithsonian. The Songs Were Transcribed Or Harmonized By Others. Cadman And Eberhart Worked Closely With La Flesche By Mail And He Continued To Provide Cadman With Omaha Melodies For The Opera. They Were Not Permitted To Use Melodies Which La Flesche Had Collected For An As Yet Unpublished Report For The Smithsonian. Together With Librettist Nelle Richmond Eberhart Cadman And La Flesche Worked Together For About Three More Years To Create An Opera Based On Omaha Stories And Music. Cadman Made Occasional Indian Music Tours To Raise Money For The Project. He Moved To Denver In 1911. Cadman Completed The Music For Da O Ma 1912 And Sought A Venue For It But It Was Never Produced Or Published. It Was Rejected By The Boston Opera Company The White-Smith Music Publishing Company Which Had Published Numerous Songs By Cadman; And The Metropolitan Opera. In The Course Of Their Work The Team Had Changed The Opera From An Omaha To Sioux Lakota/Dakota Setting. Cadman Did Gain Some Distribution For This Music: Selections From The Opera Were Published By White-Smith In 1917 As A Piano Suite And By Boosey In 1920 As An Orchestral Suite. <br/> <br/> White-Smith Music Publishing Co. paperback

A small group of autograph and typed letters signed by or relating to Walter de la Mare all but 2 addressed to Miss Vivien Barton some time with James P. Pinker London Literary Agents. All with usual folds; in good condition.
The first a T.L.S. "W.J. de la Mare" Hill House Taplow Buckinghamshire 4th. Oct. 1939. He writes that he is "indeed sorry you have felt compelled to give up your work with Mr. Pinker.you have always been so kind to me and I shall hate to think of your not being there. I should of course be interested to hear what the actual difficulties were but that no doubt is a personal thing.". The second letter is dated Oct. 31 1939 also signed "W.J. de la Mare" typed with autograph correction and addition. He writes that he hopes her application to work at the Admiralty will be successful and adds "I am glad you have given me such scope in that 'wholly imciompetent'.". The third T.L.S. dated May the 17th & signed "W.J.dlm" he writes regarding a cheque he has received from Albert Bonnier "in respect to the English Continental Zephyr of Miss M." and with autograph postscript "I hope you havn't been 'Casting any Clouts' - these Winds!". Together with 3 A.L's S from his son Richard to Miss Barton In all 4-sides 8vo. Much Haddam Hall Hertfordshire 20th July 1956 4 Sept. 1957 & 10 April 1959. He sending cheques for "your commission & expenses" and other matters e.g. ".as to Mr. Lockley - in the circumstances I think we had better agree to his using the poems he asked for for a reduced fee of ten guineas" etc. Also an A.L.S. from his daughter Florence Thompson 2-sides 8vo Dykes Henfield Sussex June 17th n.y. ".at the moment we are trying to compile a list of people who have letters from my father & are willing to lend them.I know how much my father appreciated all you did for him & we too know how much this work involved.".WHISTLER THERESA 1927-2007. Biographer of Walter de la Mare. Original space-flown flag 5½" X 4¼" and cloth patch 4¼" X 4 3/4" presented on a 12 3/4" X 16 3/4" cream colored heavy stock in turn mounted to a 16" X 20" pale blue mat board. Very good. Bit of slight soiling. The cream colored stock bears glossy photographs on the upper left takeoff and lower right landing corners. At lower left is a circular flute-edged NASA gold foil seal and the space-flown flag is mounted at upper right -- consisting of the State Seal of Illinois with the word "ILLINOIS" below against a white background. This is my next film the one with Tony Quinn" that it took three years of fighting to get the movie rights and asking Diane and Mike for collaboration on the film. The film was released in 1978 staring Anthony Quinn and titled the same as the book. The movie was nominated for both a Golden Globe and at the Moscow International Film Festival in 1979 IMDB and Golden Globes. The late Hall Bartlett 1912-1993 started his film production company in 1952 and made other movies with actors Bob Hope The Paleface - 1948 Robert Stack Joan Crawford The Caretakers - 1963 and Sidney Poitier All the Young Men -1960. Oscar Lewis 1914-1970 was an American anthropologist who studied "the culture of poverty" who was professor of anthropology at Washington University in St. Louis 1946-48 later at the University Of Illinois. Lewis also worked for Human Relations Area Files Interamerican Indian Institute and the U. S. Department of Agriculture Columbia Encyclopedia.
