BARBER, Lidiah (1738-90)
Document Signed
The first English settlement in Connecticut in the early 17th century was Windsor and among their earliest prominent names was Barber or Barbur or Barbour. DS from a member of this noted family Lidiah Barber 1p 7" X 12¼" Windsor CT 1761 November 11. Very good. Mildly age toned. Barber sells fifteen acres of land to a David Barber relationship unknown for thirty-seven pounds ten shillings describing the location of the parcel. Lidiah variously spelled "Ledei" "Lydia" "Lidiah" married an Aaron Eaton born 1736 the following year which perhaps occasioned the sale of this land. This document is signed at lower right by two witnesses Captain Samuel Eno 1696-1778 and his son Eliphalet Eno 1740-1833 and is signed at lower right by Lidiah Barber with her "X. unknown

No one wrote more potboiling Westerns than this Ohio dentist turned novelist whose sales topped 13 million copies within his lifetime; "Riders of the Purple Sage" 1912 typifies his fiction at its best. Partly-printed ADS 1p 6¼" X 2½" Altadena CA 1928 April 23. Near fine. Pale green bank check from the Pacific-Southwest Trust & Savings Bank filled out entirely in Grey's hand to C.C. Markham for fifty dollars and boldly signed in his characteristic ink as purple as his prose. Normal cancellation perforations not affecting signature. An attractive example. unknown

This Maine-born Congregationalist minister made his mark in Iowa where he spearheaded educational reform and became the first president of Grinnell College then Iowa College from 1865 to 1885. Intriguing if frustratingly cryptic closing portion of an ALS -- as is a fragmentary ANS 1p irregular 5¼" X 1 3/4" tipped to slightly larger sheet n.p. n.y. "1855" penned minutely in another hand along right border. Very good. Bold and attractive the top two lines are partial -- whole reads: "ing it & robbing us / it will be a favor to the illegible / Yours truly Geo. F. This Football Hall of Famer elected 1986 was twice named All-America running back and won the Heisman Trophy in 1956; as a Green Bay Packers star 1957-66 he led the NFL in scoring three times. In 1999 "American Libraries" included this leading librarian it its list of "100 Most Important Leaders We Had in the 20th Century"; among other influential positions such as director of the United Nations Library he served 28 years as secretary of the American Library Association where his leadership earned him the nickname "Mr. ALA." TLS 1p 7½" X 11" Chicago IL 1931 December 14. Addressed to Mary B. Day librarian of Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. Near fine. Left margin slightly trimmed; staple holes at upper left. On "American Library Association" letterhead Milam invites Day "to serve on the Chicago Centennial Exposition Committee for the year 1931-32" and discusses this committee's duties -- this exposition much better known as the "Century of Progress Exposition." Bold full signature. Accompanied by an "ALA Bulletin" front cover for their May 1948 issue featuring Milam's portrait and an April 1945 one-page article from that same publication honoring his 25 years there. unknown

This influential and powerful librarian served the Chicago Public Library for 64 years starting 1886 as a page boy and ending after 32 years as chief librarian in 1950. Great content TLS 1p 8½" X 11" Chicago IL 1932 March 4. Addressed "To the Members of the A.L.A. Committee on Chicago Centennial Exposition." Very good. On "Chicago Public Library" letterhead Roden sends this meaty letter regarding the CPL getting a booth at the famous Century of Progress Exposition. In part: "Space for commercial exhibits at the Exposition is quoted at $10. per square foot. At this rate the 3000 feet we are asking for would cost $30000. There seems however to be some chance that space for the Library Exhibit may be set aside without cost. Whether or not this proposition will be accepted remains to be seen. If not then what is our next move I estimate that a creditable exhibit would cost anywhere from $5000 to $15000 depending on how much of the equipment furniture books &c. might be arranged for as loans." He asks that a person be hired for this job as "it is both too important and too large a task for a Committee." Boldly signed in blue ink. Accompanied by a fine heavy stock 5½" X 8½" four-page program and menu "In Honor of / Carl B. Roden / Dinner / Tendered by the Citizens of Chicago" at Chicago's Palmer House. KEILY, Daniel J (1829-67)
Autograph Note Signed
This Union officer served on the staff of Brigadier General James Shields whose troops faced Stonewall Jackson's Confederate troops in the Shenandoah Valley in June 1862 and later commanded the Second Louisiana Regiment Cavalry; he was a good friend of famed Irish soldier Miles W. Keogh 1840-76 killed in the Battle of the Little Bighorn who served under him in the Papal Army during the Italian rebellion in 1860 and who fought with him in the Battle of Port Republic; he's reported to have become enamored with famed Southern spy "Belle" Boyd" at one point and to have unwittingly revealed military secrets to her. Outstanding pencilled ANS 2pp recto and verso heavy stock 4" X 2½" card "Conrad's Bridge" Virginia n.d. ca. early June 1862. Addressed to "General" probably James Shields. Very good. Lightly age toned.In this remarkable small report Keily reports in a small tight but fairly legible hand to his commander that "Col. Carroll moves his comm'd. at p.m. and will push on as rapidly as possible some cannonading heard this morning in the direction of Harrisonburg I would respectfully submit that if the Infantry did not move rapidly enough to carry out your views at Wainesborough before Jacksons arrival there a reconnaisance composed of cavalry conducted cautiously might attain the object with a good Guide which we have procured I would be glad to undertake it -- respectfully" and signs off adding his rank "Capt. A.D.C" beneath. A rather light challenging to transcribe postscript reads "P.S. Just received information from a reliable source that Jackson has --- --- --- Train on the --- Pt. Republic Road." It's difficult to precisely date Keily's note but General Shields did write General McDowell on June 4 1862 that "Colonel Carroll. after a forced night's march reached Conrad's Bridge this morning at 5 o'clock which bridge he found burned" -- which likely dates Keily's letter from this date or shortly after. Whether Shields took Keily up on his offer to lead a cavalry reconnaissance is unclear. Shields 1810-79 is perhaps best remembered as the Illinois politician who almost fought a duel with Abraham Lincoln in 1842; he's also the only person in American history to serve as U.S. senator from three different states Illinois Minnesota and Missouri; as a brigadier general of volunteers in the Civil War his lackluster performance as commander of the 2nd Division of the V Corps in the Army of the Potomac during the crucial Valley Campaign caused him to resign his commission. On June 9th the Battle of Port Republic took place a costly Confederate victory in which Jackson's 6000 troops faced off 3500 Union troops losing just over 800 men to the Union's loss of just over 1000 men -- a battle at which Keily himself was severely wounded in the face while leading a charge of Ohio cavalry up a hill into a barrage of Confederate artillery fire. The following year after painful recuperation Keily ended up on the staff of General Charles P. Stone in New Orleans recruiting cavalry troops in that occupied state. Late in the war he was court-martialed for "conduct unbecoming an officer" but the charges were shown false and by the end of the war he was brevetted a brigadier general. Keily died from yellow fever in Louisiana at age 38 shortly after the war's end making his autograph material quite scarce -- and a choice war-date item such as this most desirable. This remarkable war-date communication sheds interesting light on Shields as commander during the disastrous Valley Campaign. unknown

This British writer produced a wide variety of books ranging from literary "Thoughts in the Cloister and the Crowd" 1835 to biography "The Life of Columbus" 1869 to nonfiction "Essays Written in the interval of Business" 1841 and as a versatile civil servant was highly regarded by many including Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and served as dean of the Privy Council. ALS 3pp lettersheet 4½" X 7¼" n.p. 9 January 1872. Addressed to "Thornton" Thornton Leigh Hunt 1810-73 son of writer Leigh Hunt journalist and first editor of the influential "Daily Telegraph. Near fine. On letterhead bearing the blue-embossed "Privy Council Office" insignia Helps thanks hid friend for "a very pleasant review in the Daily Telegraph Today -- at least very pleasing to the author. There was a good point taken in it -- showing an opinion of mine -- which will be valuable to me hereafter. It was in that part where the critic comments upon my chapters relating to local & imperial government. It is quite true what he says that I should have noticed the new local bodies. I will not forget this." Boldly penned. Helps is certainly referring to his latest book the just-released "Thoughts upon Government. unknown

On "Treasury Chambers / Whitehall S.W." letterhead Niemeyer writes "Mr. McKenna wishes me to return to you the drawing with his autograph enclosed" boldly signed. "McKenna" would be Niemeyer's boss Reginald McKenna 1863-1943 British banker who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer 1915-16 when Niemeyer was still an underling there. This long-time University of Wyoming professor of English authored studies such as "The Necessary Earth: Nature and Solitude in America" 1964 and "The Rocky Mountain West in 1867" 1966 but also penned poetry "We Borne Along" 1949 "The Collected Poems of Wilson Clough" 1990 and was an accomplished amateur artist; killed when struck by a car while strolling a rural highway in New York. ANS 1p heavy stock 3½" X 5½" Laramie WY 1932 December. Addressed to John Leiser a Chicago musician and music school founder. Near fine. "We are all about as usual including the littlest now nearly a year old -- David Van Wormer Clough." And notes travels: "I was. in the Black Hills country last summer for branch school and took a short trip to Star Valley Western Wyoming. The obverse is a feeble attempt to catch a bit of the 'Wyoming Alps' or the Tetons." Nicely penned in brown ink. The verso is a fine print titled "The Tetons" a tiny woodblock image of grand mountains captioned "Christmas Greetings / Mr. and Mrs. Wilson O. Clough." On stationery with the blind-embossed log of Pall Mall's Athenaeum Club Hughes offers commentary onn autograph collection: "I used to collect myself but gave it up long ago partly from finding how many of my heroes dwindled sadly in my judgment as years went on. I fear the time will come when you will also weed your collection & amongst others will wonder how you could have made the present investment. This English naval commander took part in several engagement of the American Revolutionary War: hewent to the relief of Acre while plenipotentiary at Constantinople and compelled Napoleon to raise siege 1799; he destroyed the Turkish fleet off Abydos 1807; in 1810 he became vice admiral and in 1821 full admiral. Unsigned integral address portion 3 3/4" X 6" n.p. n.y. Very good. Two original faint folds visible. At center of this address portion Smith boldly addresses it to "Messrs. Eversfield & Horne / Smith Street / Westminster." Small illegible postal cancellation at right; fragments of red wax seal still present. Typed Manuscript Signed
This well-rounded California pastor railroad man actor playwright and lecturer was a popular short story writer and novelist "Those Who Have Come Back" 1914 "Tongues of Flame" 1924 and penned the scripts for the films "Guiles of Women" 1921 starring Will Rogers and "A Pair of Hellions" 1924. TMS 1p 8½" X 11" Pacific Grove CA 1923 March 8. Near fine. Actual working draft page p. 23 from a short story titled "Mercy" which was published in the May 1923 issue of "Cosmopolitan" magazine. Typed double spaced with numerous additions deletions and corrections. Along the wide right margin vertically Macfarlane signs large and bold in full in black ink adding date and place and noting "a page from the MS of / 'Mercy' Cosmopolitan for / May 1923." Content concerns a minister named Robert N. Mason confessing a sexual crime to a friend George Fawcett during a nighttime drive through what seems suspiciously like heading north from Macfarlane's home in Pacific Grove: In part "The city of E____ enjoys a climate that has bland moments. This was one of them. It was a black velvety all-enveloping sort of night -- the very night for confidences; and the car was turned north away from the city away from the lights away north endlessly north into the open country. The minister apparently suffering the greatest distress with something upon his heart that demanded expression seemed nevertheless quite unable to utter himself." Interestingly about a year after this was signed on June 9 1924 Macfarlane bought a gun at a local gun shop said goodbye to wife and children and drove north to San Francisco where he put a bullet in his head outside the San Francisco morgue. The reason for his suicide at age 53 Diabetes. From the collection of Professor Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Johannsen requested working draft pages from authors so it's possible this manuscript leaf predates its 1923 date by quite a bit. Also present is Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing his printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. unknown

This British naval officer commanded the fireship HMS Blaze in 1856 when he captured Calcutta and in 1857 at capture of Hoogly in West Bengal; he was knighted in 1782 for his service in India became rear admiral in 1787 and named commander-in-chief of The Downs in 1790 became a baronet and was named governor of Newfoundland in 1792 became vice-admiral in 1793 and became a member of Parliament -- among numerus other accomplishments. ALS 2pp recto and verso 7½" X 9¼" Albemarle England 1796 June 22. Addressed to "My Lord Duke." Very good. Minor mounting traces on verso of blank integral address leaf. Presumably on behalf of a constituent from his district King "begs leave to become a Solicitor to your Grace in behalf of a Person who was formerly clerk in the ordnance at upnor Castle which situation he left on account of ill Health and being now in indigent Circumstances humble implores the benefit of the Charter-House. He has many Years been a regular Voter in favour of Government at Rochester. Previous to my giving your Grace this trouble I applied to other Governours but finding their turn or nomination Engaged and being informed the King has two turns to one of the Governours and that His Majesty is not usually engaged before hand I am advised to humbly solicit His Majesty gracious favour through your Grace to Mr. James Burgis the Person above attended to." Upnor Castle on the coast of Kent in southeast England was an ancient fortress converted into the largest maritime magazine in the country at that time. Boldly handsomely penned in brown ink. Below his signature King adds the rank to which he was promoted the previous year -- "Admiral." A superb example. unknown

"Who's Who in America" notification for their "Sixtieth Anniversary Edition" printed in black and red with the participant's clipped 2¼" X 2" biographical entry neatly affixed near the center. Oldberg does not sign this but by way of approval that he had proofed it he boldly pens "A correct notice" at lower right in blue ballpoint. As an accompanying typed note "from the archives of WHO'S WHO notes Oldberg was one of only two Chicagoans who had appeared in every edition of this standard reference work since the publication of the first volume in 1896. Handsome front panel boldly addressed by the Archbishop in brown ink to the treasurer of the Ecclesiastical Commission barrister C.K. Murray at 5 Whitehall Place London. The first female sociologist" according to some and a feminist at a time when that word was unknown this versatile English writer penned nonfiction essays poetry novels short stories travelogues economics and more and was one of the few self-supporting women writers of her age. Autograph Quotation unsigned 1p 7 3/4" X 6 3/4" n.p. n.y. Very good. Mild age toning and old not weakened folds; tipped to similar-size sheet. Four 4-line stanzas from Martineau's 1866 poem "The Coming of Christ in Power" the first stanza reading: "Lord Jesus come! for still / Vice shouts her maniac mirth. / And famished thousands crave their fill / While teems the fruitful earth." And the last stanza reads: "Come as in days of old / With words of grace & power! / Gather us all within thy fold / And never leave us more." Interestingly the phraseology of these four stanzas differs considerably from some printed versions of it. Vertically along the right edge a different unknown hand notes "Composed and written by Harriet Martineau. / Given to me by Mrs. Follen." Eliza L. Follen 1787-1860 was an American abolitionist and wife of poet Charles Follen; in 1844 she wrote the introduction to the American edition of Martineau's book "Life in the Sick-Room: Essays." An intriguing Martineau text though not signed and with interesting provenance. unknown

Quite attractive and frustratingly cryptic unsigned Autograph Manuscript two-punched at top and string-tied with original pink ribbon. Fascinating firsthand recollections of the writer's early education in a New England country school house apparently penned for some kind of commemoration. All told a dense meaty manuscript that must be read in its entirety to be appreciated. Opens with: "It is a difficult thing to describe an old place which you have not seen for years to a company of friends who have never seen it; a ruler and a compass seem indispensable a rough sketch on paper to show its position and its various surroundings but who among us here can fail to describe most accurately and who can fail to comprehend without the aid of riveted compass and finely pencilled drawings a country school house a New England School house with its ragged walls and still raggeder urchins with its four windows with its one door with its rows of old desks long since hacked by the idlers of other days with its ink spots dropped years before with its benches all scratched over with school boy hieroglyphics and last and not least but first with that old that honorable that respected that indispensable institution to Every New England town the village 'School mom'." He then gives a few vague specifics: "In the years 1847 & 1848 there was a small white house in a village north that has since been torn down. If we were to measure off 200 feet in 27th Street on the lower side of the Street West of the Third Avenue should locate there the Old Academy where two short years we studied. Six young zebras sent from the turmoil of the city to the quiet country there by labor of mind and of body to blend beauty with intelligence alas it was a failure from lack of ingredients ." He describes their beloved "School mom" "She was a nice young lady a little above the medium height with light hair and very mild blue eyes her dress was always plain and becoming. and she was loved by us all young and old thought Miss B. was perfection and how could we help it we fresh from the Schools of Gotham." going at length into her benevolent teaching style and her mysterious personal life. He addresses the family who lived in the house Dominis the appearance of the school and its grounds the pupils' pastimes and pranks the owner of the house "an old Jesuit. always prowling round inserting his long lean crooked nose in the School house. the wealthiest & the meanest" etc. All very Dickensian very Norman Rockwell -- sentimental and charming viewed from perhaps a half century or more later. Penned in brown ink in a handsome easily legible small hand. Although some clues do crop up that may help identify this academy and perhaps the writer we have been unable to do so despite all efforts. unknown

The entire cast of seven listed on the front wrapper have each signed boldly in pencil: David Otto John Tyers 1914-07 Helen Van Loon Vera Weikel 1911-61 John McRae Allen Stewart and Gertrude Gibson along with pianist Max Walmer. Inside pages give a plot summary of "The Marriage of Figaro" page 2 and the history of this upstart opera company page 3 noting "the oldest member of the company is now thirty." White / Emporia / Kansas / January / 1935" in black ink on a buff heavy stock 5½" X 3¼" postal card. Verso addressed in type to Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar and cancelled in Emporia on 8 January 1935. Near fine. Accompanied by a superb glossy 8½" X 6½" black and white news agency photograph International News Photo depicting a large head-and-shoulders bust of White with three persons standing alongside. Original mimeographed paper label neatly affixed to verso dated 21 March 1947 titles this scene "Unveil Bust of Famed Editor" and describes it: "Shown beside the bronze bust of the late William Allen White famed editor of The Emporia Kansas Gazette as it was unveiled today at the French Galleries 210 East 57th St. are the Hon. Ora Rindon mayor of Emporia; Mrs. William Allen White the widow and Jo Davidson the sculptor. On typed "General Headquarters / American Exppeditionary Forces / First Section -- General Staff" stationery Andrews send this "personal and unofficial note in part to express my sincere appreciation of your work in painting my portrait this morning and partly to express also unofficially the hope that arrangements may be made for the reproduction in suitable form of all the portraits which you may paint of officers of the A.E.F." Boldly signed in brown ink. Chase had been commissioned by the A.E.F. to paint portraits of commanding generals and hero doughboys -- and they were indeed reproduced in suitable form in the 1920 book "Soldiers All: Portraits and Sketches of the Men of the A.E.F." This celebrated English naval officer joined as a volunteer in 1672 and retired as Admiral of the Fleet in 1705 distinguishing himself with many commands in wars ranging from the Third Anglo-Dutch War in the 1670s to the War of the Spanish Succession in the early 18th century; he is often remembered for destroying the Spanish treasure fleet in the Battle of Vigo Bay in 1702 and for commanding the naval forces that captured Gibraltar in 1704. ALS 2pp lettersheet 5 3/4" X 7" Canterbury England n.y. September 29. Addressed to "Dear Madm." Near fine. Faintly age toned. Flowery words of condolence presumably to a daughter of a deceased friend reading: "As I can never forget the obligations I hv to the Dutchess of Roxborough nor think off her without the uttmost concern so give me Leave to condole with you in the sincerest manner for the Loss off her that was not only Valluable to her owne family butt to every one that knew her and though her Death was what we had all reason to feare yett I must confess I had flattered my self with the thought off seeing her again she seamed so chearfull when I saw her Last butt her Lite had always been such that I believe the thought off her Death was more Terrible to her friends then to her self. I will not trouble yr. Ladyship with any more news then to beg you would not so far give way to this affliction but think if she were capable of conveying her thoughts to you she would desire you to be easy and hapy and as yr. Ladyship is very young so may the remaindr. of yr. Life be as hapy as I wish it." In a postscript he also mentions his life "Lady Mary" and "my mother" but since his first and second wives were both named Mary this only dates this undated letter to the 1684 to 1702 period likely the latter period. Docket on verso indicates this letter was later returned to the third Mrs. Rooke Catherine Knatchbull who the admiral married in 1706: "Lady Rooke / Receiv'd Oct.r ye 2d / 1718." This scarce letter is accompanied by a superb 5¼" X 7¼" stipple-point engraving of Rooke a head-and-shoulders portrait of him later in life wearing armor published by Edward Harding in London in 1799. Also present is a handwritten page of biographical notes about Rooke and two other 17th century English notables penned by an unknown 19th century collector. unknown

This well-known French poet novelist and playwright was elected member of the Académie française in 1909; his home at La Garde on the French Riviera is now a museum. AMS 20pp rectos only. 8" X 10 3/4" n.p. n.y. ca. 1890. Very good to near fine. Custom bound in half grey cloth with gilt spine lettering and marbled paper over boards. Binding is very good showing mild edgewear. Holograph manuscript for "La Noel du petit Jean" penned boldly in black ink on heavy stock leaves and boldly signed at the conclusion. Clearly a working draft for it contains crossouts insertions and corrections throughout. Apparently this was a novel for the journal "Bulletin Bibliographique" and other scholarly sources of 1890-91 list an Aicard work by this title one even noting 754 pages -- though perhaps these are lists of works in progress for no published novel by this title can be found. To confuse matters further the gilt title of this bound manuscript notes "1909" although this could be an error or simply the year this was bound. After the closing signature on the final leaf Aicard pens the address of the "journal le Figaro" in Paris. An intriguing manuscript worthy of further research. unknown

This prominent Boston businessman and partner in the import/export firm Sullivan and Barbour may have been the son of the Revolutionary War general John Sullivan according to some sources though other evidence suggests not; he was also secretary of the United States Land Company and other similar concerns; his wife Marian Dix 1802-60 was sister of General John A. Dix and a noted composer best known for her hit song "The Blue Juniata"; together the Sullivans were well-known Boston socialites. ALS 1p integral address leaf 7 3/4" X 9 3/4" Washington DC 1865 March 13. Addressed to Brigadier General Edward A. Wild 1825-91 commander of the famed black infantry brigade popularly known as "Wild's African Brigade." Near fine. Wild married Sullivan's daughter Frances Ellen in 1855. Sullivan writes to his son-in-law in part: "I commend to your acquaintance & regard my friend Geo. May Powell Esq of the Internal Revenue Department; who is the son of an excellent and lamented friend of mine. Mr P. has attracted attention and favor in the highest quarters by his very able writings upon finance & taxation -- and for his superior genius as an inventor of note and his many excellencies as a gentleman a christian." Powell 1835-1905 was a statistician with the U.S. Treasury Department during the Civil War after which he became a noted social reformer philanthropist publisher "Bible geographer" involving his travels through Egypt and Palestine and inventor. An intriguing item from this Boston noteworthy to his famed son-in-law regarding a renowned Renaissance man of the day. Interestingly Sullivan writes just after the end of the Civil War and about one month after Abraham Lincoln's famed visit to Richmond shortly before his assassination -- Wild's men were among those troops who witnessed this event. Since this letter was given to Powell who could have read it rather than sent my mail it's not cancelled it's formal with the father-in-law addressing his son-in-law as "My dear General.". unknown

This colorful and legendary steamboat captain pioneered steamboating on the upper Mississippi River in the mid-19th century; he was first president of the Galena Dubuque and Minnesota Packet Company and founded the city of Winona Minnesota. Partly-printed DS 1p 8" X 10" Chicago IL 1871 January 1. Very good. Faint age toning; paper loss approx. 3½" X 2" at upper left corner affecting portion of printed text but not holograph portion. Printed "Judgment Note" promissory note acknowledging that Smith owes Nathan Corwith five thousand dollars at ten percent annual interest. Signed boldly twice by Smith. Verso bears docket penned and signed WILLIAM R. ROWLEY 1824-86 one of Galena's famous nine generals and at this date the circuit clerk; this native New Yorker enlisted as a first lieutenant in Company D of the 45th Illinois Volunteers in 1861 promoted to captain in 1862 and lieutenant colonel in 1864 and finally named brevet general; he fought at Fort Donelson Shiloh and Vicksburg; in 1864 he was named military secretary on General Grant's staff. Accompanied by a second larger 8½" X 14" Partly-printed Document Signed Chicago IL 1871 n.d. Very good. Printed "Narr. and Cognovit" literally Complaint and Confession legal document in which the top two-thirds the Narration portion consists of plaintiff Nathan Corwith referring to the promissory note just described of defendant Orrin Smith and demanding payment signed by Corwith's attorney M.M. Miller and the lower third the Cognovit portion consists of Smith's attorney Edward A. Small acknowledging same -- all couched in delightfully archaic and convoluted legalese of course. Verso of this document too bears a docket penned and signed by William R. Rowley. M.M. MILLER - was a noted Galena Illinois attorney who left Yale University to return home and join the famous Washburne Lead Mine Regiment during the Civil War; he was made commander of a colored regiment the 9th Louisiana Regiment in which every man was wounded or killed in the famous June 7 1863 Battle of Milliken's Bend part of the Vicksburg Campaign. EDWARD A. SMALL 1829-82 was another noted Galena attorney though in 1869 he relocated to Chicago. Plaintiff NATHAN CORWITH 1819-89 was a noted Galena pig lead broker clothier and then head of a prominent banking family that founded the Bank of Galena which he served as president. Why Captain Smith borrowed $5000 a huge sum of money in 1871 from Corwith is unknown though it's a reasonable assumption that it involved river commerce in some way -- perhaps purchase of another packet boat An intriguing and scarce pair in any case involving and signed by a number of prominent northwest Illinoisans. Documents signed by Captain Smith are rarely encountered. unknown

On heavy stock lined music notation paper Schira pens large and bold several lines of words and music from an unidentified religious composition with different parts "Sopra" "Contr" "Tenore" "Basso" labeled. FELLER, Bob (1918-2010)

Bullet Bob" "Rapid Robert" "The Heater from Van Meter" -- this Iowa-born American baseball star was one of the greatest pitchers of all time pitching three no-hitters playing eight All-Star games and winning baseball's Triple Crown in 1940; he debuted with the Cleveland Indians in 1936 and retired from that team in 1956 at which time his number #19 was likewise retired; in 1962 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on his first ballot which rarely happens. Oversize printed PS 11" X 14" n.p. n.y. Very good. Some barely-visible wrinkles. Printed entirely in sepia this modern reproduction is a full-length portrait of Feller in uniform at the height of his fame throwing a pitch. His printed signature appears in a light area at lower right and above this he signs boldly in black fineline. unknown

This famed Hungarian conductor was also a composer of orchestral works cantatas and choral works. IPS Hungarian heavy stock 7½" X 10" n.p. 1937. Fine. A striking and dramatic closeup portrait of a brooding young Viktor handsomely signed and inscribed to "Mr. Copley" -- Richard Copley 1876-1939 a well-known New York concert manager in Hungarian in a light area at lower right in bold black ink. HALLAM, Henry (1777-1859)
Autograph Letter Signed
This renowned English historian is remembered for "The View of the State of Europe during the Middle Ages" 1818 "The Constitutional History of England" 1827 and "Introduction to the Literature of Europe in the 15th 16th and 17th Centuries" 1838-39; his son Arthur died in 1833 at age 22 and is immortalized in Tennyson's book-length 1850 poem "In Memoriam A.H.H." ALS 2pp recto and verso 4½" X 7¼" London "24 Wilton Crescent" 1842 February 5. Addressed to "My dear Sir." Very good. Faint mounting trace. Interesting content almost certainly concerning Matthew Arnold's father Thomas Arnold 1795-1842 and his just-published "Sermons: Christian Life Its Hopes Fears and Close." Writes Hallam in part: "I return you Dr Arnold's Sermons with many thanks. They show all that characteristic independence of mind which almost amounts to originality & perhaps does produce an original component in the Dr himself though no one idea may be absolutely novel. It appears to me he has taken very good ground in his arguments against the school but not the most popular ground." Four months after Hallam wrote this Arnold died at the age of 46. Boldly penned in Hallam's usual less-than-legible scrawl. An excellent content example. unknown
