Fine. Color picture postcard issued by the Vatican never addressed never mailed with the picture side showing a blueprint shape of the Vatican at left and the Vatican crest in color at the right. Small scotch tape stain at upper left and upper right corner the former touching the "T" the latter touching the last "l" in "Burnell". Accompanied by a choice vintage 10" X 8" sepia-tone glossy photograph a scene from the 1944 Western "Swing in the Saddle" depicting him front and center with singer Jane Frazee the "Hoosier Hotshots" band behind them. Addressed to George May Powell. Very good. Powell a photographer had sent Cuyler a print of a large photo montage he was marketing "Being a group of Portraits of all those members of Congress who voted for the AMENDMENT of the CONSTITUTION PROHIBITING SLAVERY with those of President LINCOLN and Vice-President HAMLIN added." Cuyler's response is the "blurb" Powell had requested for use in a leaflet he was preparing advertising this photograph: "The likenesses are excellent; the idea is happy -- and the engraving ought to be on every loyal citizens' wall. 'Honor to whom honor is due'. And on that roll who deserve better from a grateful country than the Congress which put slavery into its charnel-house. It deserves a place beside my 'Emancipation Proclamation' of dear departed Lincoln." On the blank fourth leaf Cuyler adds and initials a sentiment: "Our temperance cause brightens. Influential Congregational clergyman and author who co-edited "Christian Union" with Henry Ward Beecher and succeeded Beecher as pastor of Brooklyn's famed Plymouth Congregational Church. Exceptional content TMsS 2pp 6" X 9" Cornwall-on-Hudson NY 1881 December 7. Very good. Original typescript of Abbott's contribution to Osborn H. Oldroyd's 1882 book "The Lincoln Memorial: Album-Immortelles" a collection of reminiscences and sentiments about Lincoln by notables of the day. Abbott carefully and neatly inks in words and phrases and crosses out others signing at the close unusually small and neat knowing this would be the actual signaturee reproduced in the book and adding the date and place. A fine philosophical statement reading in part: ".It was the peculiar genius of Abraham Lincoln that he was able by his sympathetic insight to perceive the change in public sentiment without waiting for it to be formulated in any legislative action; to keep pace with it to lead and direct it to quicken laggard spirits to hold in the too ardent too impetuous and too hasty ones and thus when he signed the emancipation proclamation to make his signature not the act of an individual man the edict of a military imperator but the representative act of a great nation." Accompanying this typescript is an actual page from Oldroyd's book bearing Abbott's statement pp. 81-82 and this reproduced signature. Accompanied by a Typed Letter Signed bearing his usual charismatic ebullient signature 1p 5½" X 8½" Cornwall-on-Hudson NY 1881 December 7. Addressed to Osborn H. Oldroyd. Near fine. Transmits this manuscript although "I have no faith that anything which I can say in respect to Abraham Lincoln would be worthy a place in your collection." A most intriguing pair. unknown

The younger brother of poet William Cullen Bryant was an Illinois poet farmer politician and newspaper editor; his books of verse include "Poems Written from Youth to Old Age 1824-1884" 1885 and "The Life and Poems of John Howard Bryant" 1894. AQS 1p 5" X 8" Princeton Illinois 1895 May 20. Very good. Faint bit of age toning. Stanza from a poem handsomely penned in brown ink in old age: "There is no breath of common air / No ray of light from Star or Sun / No Shade of beauty anywhere; / But whispers of the Almighty One" nicely signed in full. Bryant does not identify it but this is the penultimate stanza from his poem "The Streams of Life" which appears on pages 227-28 of the "Life and Poems" volume published the year before he penned this excerpt. From the collection of University of Chicago geology professor Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work on the subject. This German-born composer and conductor wrote pieces for piano and violin songs a cantata two operas and more. AMuQS heavy stock 3¼" X 2½" card n.p. Chicago n.d. 1905. Very good. Light even age toning; mounting traces on verso. On a 3¼" X 1" slip neatly tipped to the center of this heavy card Fielitz boldly pens a couple of measures of music adding "Eliland" just above it and "Eine kleine Zelle" below it. Below this slip on the heavy card he signs boldly in full. "Eliland" was Fielitz's most popular song cycle in the United States. This unusual piece was penned just after Fielitz emigrated to America in 1905 whereupon he settled in Chicago and became an instructor at the Chicago Musical College. Very uncommon. unknown

Popular and prolific American playwright. Nice archive of five TLsS each 1p three 8½" X 11" and two 8½" X 7" Shoreham NY 1942 June 3 to December 11. Addressed to poet Joseph Auslander 1897-1965 at the Library of Congress. Very good to fine. All concern the donation of Pollock's manuscripts to the Library of Congress although he protests "I don't want to crowd you with Pollockiana.". ".nothing would give me greater pleasure" writes Pollock "and particularly because. the inspiration for my most successful play 'THE FOOL' came of an afternoon's reading in that Library." Regarding the manuscript of his just-completed autobiography "Harvest of My Years" Pollock sheds some light on his work methods: ".all but the first two chapters of this are written in pencil. The first two were dictated and typed and if you desire with the combination I will include a note of explanation. The pencilled manuscript is voluminous of course and should you prefer I could substitute a typed script with pen and ink corrections in my handwriting but I think you will agree that if it can be preserved the original pencilled script is more interesting." Two items: First a TQS 1p 8½" X 11" n.p. n.y. Near fine. Faint original mailing folds. Brief two-stanza poem titled "Beyond" which goes as follows: "When all my little worldly tasks are done / And life is through / Shall I my love lie down in sleep at last / To dream with you / Or shall I find when you and I shall rest / In peace supreme / That death is Life but of a larger plan / And Life the dream" Boldly signed at the conclusion. Second a TNS 1p 7¼" X 10¼" New York NY 1923 February 2. Addressed to Dr. Albert Johannsen. Near fine. On "Popular Radio" letterhead listing him as editor Banning thanks this University of Chicago professor for "my unpardonable delay in responding more promptly to your flattering suggestion of over a month ago" and transmits this typed poem. Boldly signed. Johannsen authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. His original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen accompanies this attractive pair. unknown

Near fine. A striking head-and-shoulders closeup in flapperish bobbed hair boldly signed and inscribed in black ink in a light portion at upper left: "To John G. American pianist and composer "To a Messenger" "I Came with a Song" "Like a Rosebud" who studied under Leschetizsky in Vienna; he toured as accompanist with Marcella Sembrich and Frances Alda and was much sought after as a voice teacher for the likes of Marian Anderson and Lawrence Tibbett. TLS 1p 5½" X 8½" New York NY 1925 November 10. Addressed to John G. Leiser a Chicago music school founder. Fine. On letterhead of the "La Forge-Berumen Studios" La Forge sends this friendly note to an admirer: "It is always most gratifying to know that one's efforts are enjoyed and appreciated. I enclose an article that I think you will find of interest. I was born at 303 South Court St. Rockford Ill." Original envelope present. The photograph he mentions sending under separate cover is not present but the front portion of the oversize envelope 11" X 8¼" is addressed in La Forge's hand and also signed by him. unknown

American playwright whose many works include "The Fabulous Mrs. Fair" 1920. TLS 1p 7¼" X 10½" Santa Barbara CA 1920 June 25. Addressed to noted playwright Augustus Thomas 1857-1934. Very good. Bit of edgewear. In part: "I am very happy that you liked 'MRS. FAIR' and regret that I was not there to hear you say so. I am out here watching my nine year old who went rather to the bad physically becoming an expert on a horse and in the water and in consequence am very happy. I didn't think anything could add much to my feeling of content until I received the wire. It added not a little to the general joy." Thomas may have attended the premiere of "The Fabulous Mrs. Fair" which debuted about this time. Forbes' pleasure and relief at Thomas's congratulatory telegram can well be imagined for Thomas was a theatre heavyweight whose opinion could affect a new play's success. unknown
