American army general who served as a commander of the famed 9th Cavalry Regiment black soldiers known as "The Buffalo Soldiers"; as an Indian fighter Hutcheson participated with the 9th Cavalry in actions against the Oklahoma Indians the South Dakota Sioux and the Bannock Indians; co-authored a history of the regiment. Partly-printed ADS 1p 7½" X 3" Washington D.C. 1919 July 30. Very good. Handsome check drawn on The Riggs National Bank with a bank vignette at left made out in Hutcheson's hand to "Camp Quartermaster Laundry" for $9.88 and boldly signed. Colorful American adventurer and World War One "Chicago Tribune" war correspondent aviation adventurer writer editor radio commentator. Three items the first being a TLS 1p 8½" X 10 3/4" Chicago Tribune letterhead Paris France 1921 November 30. Addressed to Messrs. A.N. Marquis & Company. Very good. Minor edgewear. Encloses "a corrected personal sketch" of his "Who's Who" entry and orders a copy of the completed book. The second and third items consist of two partly-printed unsigned ADs 2pp 8½" X 11" Paris France 1921 November 30. Very good. Minor soiling. Updating form sent out by "Who's Who" for its 1922-23 edition on orange paper with Gibbons' 2½" X 3½" biographical entry from the previous edition affixed onto the blank center area. In heavy pencil Gibbons has made extensive minor corrections most notably adding the following: "While passenger on SS Laconia torpedoed and sunk night Feb 25 1917 200 miles off Irish coast after night in small boat rescued and cabled 4000 word account of disaster in which American lost lives." The third page is identical to the second but affixed to the center is the corrected entry with Gibbons' changes incorporated. A fascinating document recording the daring exploits of this legendary correspondent. Lastly also present is a printed condolence acknowledgment card sent out by Gibbons' family upon his death heavy stock 4 3/4" X 3½" n.p. n.y. 1939. Ornately printed: "The family of / Floyd Gibbons / appreciates and gratefully acknowledges / your kind expression of sympathy." Fine. unknown

Signed Commemorative Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled in Chicago Illinois on 7 April 1971 and bearing a special "USO / 30th Anniversary / 1941 - 1971" cancellation. Although Grover Cleveland had electric lights put on the White House Christmas tree in 1895 it was this 15-year-old Spanish immigrant who in New York in 1917 developed and popularized the modern concept of a string of small lights painted different colors to decorate trees and avoid the fires often caused by Christmas tree candles; his family firm NOMA Electric Company monopolized the industry for a time. Signed First Day Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled at Washington DC on November 5 1970 and with "First Day of Issue" noted. Eisenhower" stamp and 2-cent "Frank Lloyd Wright" stamp at right. In addition an appropriate 32-cent "Berlin Airlift delivers food and fuel in 1948-49 blockade" stamp added in later years -- cancelled appropriately at Berlin Station APO on 1998 June 26. No decorative cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address. At the center Clay signs large and bold in black fineline adding "Gen USA Ret." NOT a First Day Cover but an enterprising collector created this unique cover cancelled in appropriate places on appropriate dates. This influential American rabbi first served in Toronto where he joined the reform movement and founded the "Canadian Jewish Review"; in 1925 he became rabbi at Congregation Anshe Chesed in Cleveland serving until his death; among his many noteworthy activities such as debating Clarence Darrow in 1928 was supervising Jewish armed forces chaplains during World War Two; even touring the fronts at FDR's request to inspect and visit all chaplains -- making him the first rabbi ever awarded the Medal of Merit for his war efforts; author many books such as "The History of Jews in Cincinnati." Having died at age twenty-six Cartan's autograph is quite scarce and good music content letters rare. Mild bit of soiling; minor mounting trace on blank 4th leaf. On ornate "Executive Chamber" letterhead Lee replies to a cryptic request. In part: "Your favor to the Governor is received. I am directed to say that he cannot give you the desired information By applying to Genl. Meigs Q.M. General U.S. Army you can probably ascertain when the book can be found." An interesting figure in the history of the Jewish society known as B'nai B'rith was this San Francisco businessman who served as grand secretary of their San Francisco headquarters for many years; when his real estate dealings failed and the grand lodge appeared to be missing a large amount of funds he committed suicide. ADS 1p 8" X 3¼" San Francisco CA 1893 March 28. Very good. Moderately age toned. "Received of Mr. R.C. Hallowell Thirty-Eight dollars in payment of moneys collected for my account" -- apparently a payment on an I.O.U. Boldly signed in full. Dated two years prior to his suicide this might well relate to the financial difficulties that ultimately ended up in Blank "borrowing" from his lodge and taking his life in despair. Influential Congregational clergyman and author who co-edited "Christian Union" with Henry Ward Beecher and succeeded Beecher as pastor of Brooklyn's famed Plymouth Congregational Church. ANS 1p 5" X 8" Cornwall-on-Hudson NY n.y. 1878 November 25. Addressed to showman P.T. Barnum 1810-91. Very good. Lightly age toned. Intriguing if brief: "Your letter respecting Popular Amusements was received too late for this week's issue. It will go in next week & the papers shall be sent as requested." In Abbott's 1922 book "Silhouettes of My Contemporaries" he devotes a chapter to Barnum of whom he was a great admirer. In 1878 Abbott wrote Barnum requesting information about Tom Thumb and on 5 October 1878 received a cordial note in reply from Barnum. Meanwhile in the November 6th and 13th issues of "Christian Union" Reverend Samuel Scoville published a two-art article titled "The Christian View of Popular Amusements." Barnum took issue with some of this Congregationalist minister's views and in the December 4th issue his rebuttal titled simply "Popular Amusements" was published in "Christian Union." This letter then is the magazine's initial response to Barnum's reply to Scoville's criticisms. The article was republished a number of times in other publications and also found its way into Barnum's 1880 autobiography "Struggles and Triumphs; or Forty Years' Recollections. unknown

This Civil War officer served as lieutenant colonel later brevet brigadier general with the Second Corps where he was chief commissary of subsistence; he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his October 27 1864 service at Hatchers's Run Virginia where he led part of a brigade that captured Confederate soldiers and their flag and saved artillery. Clipped portion of a printed Document Signed 8½" X 2¼" n.p. n.y. Near fine. Below the printed line "therein expressed; that their services were rendered as stated and were necessary for the public service" Smith signs in full large and bold in brown ink on a dotted line at lower right. Below his signature his rank "Lt. Col. & Chief / 2nd Corps" is handsomely penned in another hand. Likely clipped from a routine military form of some sort. unknown

The rear admiral who served as commander-in-chief of the North Atlantic Fleet 1901-03 took part in the attack on Fort Sumter saw action aboard the Colorado as part of the Western Gulf Blockading Squadron in 1861-62 and the Judith in Pensacola Harbor and was executive officer on the Housatonic when she was destroyed by a torpedo off Charleston; from 1865-68 he served aboard the Hartford in the Asiatic Squadron. Partly-printed ADS 1p 7½" X 3" Washington DC 1903 July 3. Very good. Check drawn on The Riggs National Bank filled out in Higginson's hand for $25 to John T. Devine and boldly signed. Usual cancellation holes touch upon the signature in several spots but overall a very handsome piece. Vignette of bank at left. unknown

Perhaps a War of 1812 veteran. perhaps an attorney. perhaps a bureaucrat -- perhaps all of the above! ALS 2pp 8" X 10" Rutland VT 1818 May 16. Addressed to Robert Brent Pay Master General of the U.S. Army. Very good. Mild age toning. Good content appeal on behalf of the wife of a War of 1812 substitute soldier who died in battle. Reads in part: "There are in this vicinity two or three instances where persons served in the detached militia from this state in 1812 as substitutes whose names do not appear on the roll they having answered to the names of those who were drafted. These persons died in the service leaving widows. the widows claims for 5 years half pay is admissable as making proof of their services. permit me to remark in their behalf. it would be extremely unjust to exclude a claim merely because the officer should improperly suffer the name of the drafted man to remain upon the roll." Very interesting discussion of the dilemma of widows of substitute soldiers. unknown

Free-Franked Envelope
The first Baron Gambier was a noted naval commander; he was the first to break the French line in Howe's victory he led the bombardment of Copenhagen and the 1807 capture of the Danish fleet and he negotiated the 1814 peace with the U.S.; in 1830 he was named admiral of the fleet. Free-franked front portion of envelope irregular 4½" X 2½" tipped to slightly larger sheet Uxbridge England 1825 February 11. Very good. Faint red circular "Free" postal cancellation. Addressed in his hand to "The Revd. T.T. Becher / Southwell / Notts:e" and signed simply "Gambier" at lower left. A handsome piece. unknown

Signed Postal Cover
This American sailor who served during World War Two lays claim to fame as being one of very few living persons ever pictured on a U.S. stamp -- his smiling visage appears among a group of swabbies pictured on the U.S. three-cent stamp issued in 1945 titled "U.S. Navy" Signed Postal Cover 6½" X 3½" n.p. n.y. Fine. NOT a First Day Cover but simply an envelope bearing a mint copy of this stamp neither addressed nor mailed. Across the center large and bold Mullen signs in black medium-point marker. Original transmittal envelope cancelled in Des Moines Iowa on 13 February 1976 also present -- as is a small article from a philatelic newspaper undated but circa 1976 picturing this stamp and a "To the Editor" letter from three of Mullen's grandchildren pointing out that the Iwo Jima flagraisers were not the only living persons pictured on a U.S. stamp. Mullen appears at the upper right corner of the group of sailors captured on this stamp his cap cocked jauntily. Highly unusual -- a fun little piece of philatelic history. unknown

This U.S. Army general commanded the VII Corps Artillery 1944-45 the 82nd Airborne Division 1950 the 2nd Armored Division 1951 and the X Corps 1952; he served as vice chief of staff for the U.S. Army in 1955 deputy commander in chief of Europe in 1957 and director of military assistance for the Defense Department in 1960. Partly-printed ADS 1p 7 3/4" X 2 3/4" Washington DC 1921 February 9. Very good. Check made out to Geraldine Birkheimer for $40 drawn on the Riggs National Bank whose engraved image appears at left. This naval officer served as second in command of the ill-fated airship Shenandoah or ZR-I which broke into three parts over Ohio on September 3 1925 killing 14 of her crew of 43; filled with nonflammable helium most of the crew survived the disaster. Partly-printed ADS 1p 6½" X 2 3/4" Washington DC 1924 February 6. Very good. Check drawn on the Riggs National Bank with a handsome vignette of the bank at the left filled out to Wallace Brothers Machine Works for $49.90 and signed by Hancock. Normal cancellation perforations touching upon the recipient's name but not on Hancock's signature. Unusual. unknown

This American naval commander awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1933 gained fame in 1898 when he sunk the "Merrimac" during a naval maneuver in a channel at Santiago Cuba; from 1907 to 1915 he served as a representative from Alabama. Exceptionally bold and attractive "Compliments of / Richmond Pearson Hobson / with apologies for delay -- / Hong Kong April 21 1900" in brown ink heavy stock 3½" X 2½" card. Very good. Mild age toning; faint mounting traces at a couple corners. A choice example signed near the height of his fame. With original envelope cancelled in the Philippines on 22 May 1900. unknown

This career Army officer joined the Maine Volunteer Infantry at the outbreak of the Spanish-American War and was active with the 4th Army Corps in World War One; in 1935 he was promoted to brigadier general. TNS1p 7¼" X 10½" Fort Sheridan IL 1935 March 5. Addressed to Louis Thuringer. Near fine. On letterhead of "The Commanding General" Merrill offers a taut "Thank you for your good wishes" and signs boldly in full -- no doubt he was congratulated on his new rank of brigadier general. unknown

This Military Intelligence Hall of Fame inductee was an Army general who served throughout the Spanish-American War Philippine Insurrection and World War One before being chosen by Pershing to oversee the American Expeditionary Force's intelligence operations -- making him America's first G2; he helped organize the Corps of Intelligence Police the army's first counterintelligence organization. Large bold and sloppy "Very cordially yours / D.E. Nolan. / Maj Gen U.S.A." 5½" X 2 3/4" Columbus OH 1931 June 17. Very good. Name/address of Nolan's command from 1927 to 1931 Headquarters Fifth Corps Area purple inkstamped at top edge along with typed date. This 2nd lieutenant with the 10th Cavalry the famed "Buffalo Soldier's" participated in the charge up San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War and was wounded; he also served as aide to General Wood in Cuba and the Philippines and then to Major General Theodore Roosevelt; in 1917 he was named member of the General Staff of the American Expeditionary Forces and commanded the 63rd Infantry Brigade. This U.S. naval officer distinguished himself in the Mexican-American War commanding the bomb vessel "Vesuvius" in 1847; a captain in the Civil War he participated in the attack on Port Royal; named commodore in 1863 he commanded a portion of Admiral Porter's fleet in the bombardment of Fort Fisher; as rear admiral he served as commandant of the Brooklyn Navy Yard from 1868 to 1870. Signature on portion of a Printed Document 6" X 4" n.p. Brooklyn 1869 July 31. Near fine. Printed portion along top reads "for the month ending. 18. which" with printed "APPROVED:" at center left and printed "Commandant" at lower right. Godon signs boldly near the center while the date and his title "Rear Admiral" have been penned in another hand. Nice example signed while commandant of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. unknown

O'HAY, Patrick Irving (1870-1944)

This Irish soldier of fortune fought under General Gomez in Cuba in 1897 in the Spanish-American War as one of Roosevelt's "Rough Riders" in a Canadian cavalry regiment in the South African War in the Balkans in 1903 with the Princess Pat regiment in 1914 with the United States Army in 1917 and elsewhere; he called himself an "apostle of discontent" complaining it was hard to feed himself between wars; he tried his hand at acting in later years and even became a race horse trainer; at his death he owned a filling station in Taos New Mexico. Boldly pencilled "Yours for 'peace' / Patrick Irving O'Hay / Capt Inf. U.S.A ret" heavy stock 5" X 3" card n.p. n.y. Very good. Faintly age toned; minor mounting traces on verso which bears printed text of a poem "Worcester Town". Nice example. unknown

This U.S. Navy admiral was Chief of Naval Operations in charge of the U.S. blockade of Cuba during the Soviet missile crisis in 1962; denied appointment as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff because of friction with Secretary of Defense McNamara he was named U.S. Ambassador to Portugal. TNS 1p 5 3/4" X 7 3/4" n.p. 1962 August 31. Addressed to Gerald L. Arnholt. Near fine. Single faint horizontal fold. On "Chief of Naval Operations" letterhead featuring a 4-star blue flag the admiral complies with an autograph request.
