This Greek-born American artist was the youngest of that fabled group of abstract expressionist painters that included Jackson Pollock Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning active in New York in the 1940s and '50s. Wenzel created artwork for the Disney Company for 42 years including much of their poster art for such films as the 1964 "Mary Poppins." This U.S. Army officer wielded great influence while in charge of the Record and Pension Division of the Surgeon General's Office in the 1880s stremalining and modernizing it and later 1892-1904 as chief of the Record and Pension Office of the War Department; in 1899 he was promoted to brigadier general and in 1904 to major general; publication of the mammoth 100 volume "The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies 1880-1901" better known as the "O.R." was his responsibility. Rather cryptic and bureaucratic Record and Pension Office form enquiring about the whereabouts of one William E. Few of Company "K" of the 8th New York Volunteer Cavalry in the spring of 1865 followed by a finding that Few enrolled on 23 March 1865 and on 30 April 1865 was in Bladensburg Maryland and finally on 6 June 1865 was in Alexandria Virginia. The son of Declaration of Independence signer Lewis Morris 1726-98 and nephew of statesman Gouverneur Morris 1752-1816 was himself a soldier in the Revolutionary war -- aide-de-camp to General Charles Lee later on the staff of General Nathanael Greene and himself raised to the rank of general; postwar he helped found the village of Butternuts Otsego County in 1787 and served in the New York legislature; Morris New York is named in his honor. Born with the incredible name Albert Onesime Britannicus Gwathveoyd Louis Chevalier this English actor and comedian was a master of music hall entertainment and toured England and American with a music hall-style revue to great success -- especially his ever-popular sketch "My Old Dutch." AQS 1p 5�" X 7�" Philadelphia PA 1906 November 13. Good plus. Faintly age toned; tipped down to heavy green album leaf of same size; small triangular chip at upper left corner. On letterhead of Boston's "Parker House" Chevalier boldly pens in black ink: "'The dream ain't forgot tho' the / dreamin' is done.' / 'The Workhouse Man' / Musical monologue. / Albert Chevalier / Philadelphia. Nov. 13th / 06. / Guilbert-Chevalier Recital." Chevalier and French cabaret singer Yvette Guilbert premiered a new variety show at New York's Carnegie Hall on October 13th 1906 -- exactly one month before this little excerpt was penned. Opined the "New York Times" reviewer "Less familiar than most of the other characters presented by Mr. Chevalier. was his 'Workhouse Man' a sketch in the vein of that little masterpiece of his 'My Old Dutch'. This American author and poet penned popular verse collections such as "The Burning of Schenectady and Other Poems" 1842 "Drawings and Tintings" 1844 and "Fugitive Poems" 1846 as well as prose about the woodland life in early America such as "Woods and Waters" 1860 "The Indian Pass" 1969 "Lake and Mountain" 1870 and "Eagle Pine" 1871; of his verse Edgar Allan Poe wrote "Mr. Street has fine taste and a keen sense of the beautiful. He writes carefully elaborately and correctly" -- though he also found him imitative. AMS 2pp separate leaves 7 3/4" X 11�" n.p. n.y. Very good. Bit of mild edgewear but overall bold and quite handsome. Complete fair copy of Street's well-known seven stanza poem "The Flag of the Eagle" which begins: "The Flag of the Eagle will never be furled / Though battle-skies scowl with the wrath of a world! / Like the have hid its emblem the milder be cast: / The broader its storm-scorning folds will be cast: / Mighty Flag of the Eagle!" And ending: "Oh yes the signs brighten; the nemesis blow / His own sound shall plant in the heart of the foe / Down down shall he fall to his own battle-spear / That will turn to a staff with wild rapture to rear / Our land's Flag of the Eagle!" Boldly signed below the title at top of the first page. An unusually long and exceptionally attractive manuscript copy. Addressed to "My dear Sir" and the address panel in Palgrave's hand tells us this is "Dr. Roget" Peter Mark Roget 1779-1869 English physician best known for the 1852 "Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases" better known as "Roget's Thesaurus". Near fine. Neatly expertly inlaid. Nice personal content. In part: "I should have had very great pleasure in accepting your kind invitation but my father who is eighty six years of age has been suddenly attacked in such a manner as to give us hope to apprehend that I may not be able to go out a fortnight. and do not want to have you in uncertainty. With Mrs. Palgrave's best reports to Mrs. Roget." Francis's father was Meyer Cohen a member of the London Stock Exchange whose year of birth in unknown but who died in 1831 helping date this letter. Boldly penned in Palgrave's usual small abysmal script. Overall a quite attractive example. unknown

English statesman Hampden son of famed statesman Henry from King Charles I's reign was named privy councillor in 1689 commissioner of the Treasury in 1690 and from 1690 to 1694 also served as chancellor of the Exchequer; politician Fox served as commissioner of the Treasury for 23 years from 1679 to 1702; and statesman Pelham the 1st Baron Pelham of Laughton is well known as father of two prime ministers Henry and the Duke of Newcastle himself served as Lord Commissioner of the Treasury 1690-92 1697-99 1701-02. Signatures clipped from printed document 3" X 7�" n.p. London England 1691 January 12. Very good. Slight bit of age toning; minor mounting trace on verso. Likely clipped from a routine Treasury document this item bears a slim row of printed down the top 3�" of the left margin only about 3/4" wide -- boilerplate text in a large typeface but not enough to make sense of it. Hampden Fox and Pelham each sign in rich brown ink one above the other all as commissioners of the Treasury. A partial handwritten text in another hand runs across the lower 3" signed at the close by one "Howard" as yet unidentified. Various noted Howards of the period have been considered -- Edward Charles Robert -- and ruled out but this is probably a high Treasury official. Cordial letter reading in part: "Dear Parents of a fortunate boy aged two named George: One of the finest things that can happen to a child is to have parents who are vitally interested in his future. It is a pleasure to meet such people. After the pleasant compliment you have paid me it is indeed fitting that I comply with your request for a photograph. This leading man of crime and drama left the Chicago stage to appear in more than 300 films mostly silents starting at the Essanay Studios in 1913 right when they switched from their Chicago base to a California location; he often appeared in supporting roles in talkies finally retiring in 1947. IPS 3�" X 5" n.p. 1913. Near fine. Superb sepia-tone oval-shaped head-and-shoulders portrait of a handsome young Washburn in suit and tie. Across his chest he boldly inscribes and signs in a dark ink: "Very Sincerely / Bryant Washburn / 'Essanay' / 1913." Washburn had just signed on with the up-and-coming Chicago firm -- he was local talent -- which was founded in 1907 and made its name largely with Charlie Chaplin and Ben Turpin comedies. In a light portion at upper left she signs and inscribes boldly in blue ink: "To Eddie Kesner / a real live booster / Best of luck / Maurice and Fifi-Hill / Jan. 1935." D'Orsay married Hill in 1933 and divorced him in 1938 so photographs signed with this married name are uncommon. A delightful vintage image beautifully signed. unknown

Bit of wear; minor tape stains on verso. Delightful note to an admirer: "While I hope you live as long as I have and longer I hope you won't get as beat-up looking and feeling. There must be some way of avoiding it if you begin young. some 20 years ago a magazine editor friend of mine asked me for a photo to run with some advertising. I sent him the best I had. Then he wrote back. asking me if I didn't have one with hair on. Since I was bald before I ever met him I decided to really surprise him. So I went to a photographer and had a picture made with hair on my head. Around the Saturday Evening Post editorial rooms this was considered rather funny. here is one of them. Like the girl who wasn't named Miss America I wish I were better looking." Bold full signature. Accompanied by the aforementioned photograph: IPS 10" X 8" n.p. n.y. Very good. Absolutely delightful closeup of a very bald Brooks in pullover sweater and tie at the right facing left and looking into a small wall mirror which faces the photo's viewer -- in which Brooks' reflection WITH A FULL HEAD OF HAIR gazes out! A superb example of dark room trickery. In a light area of his sweater at the photo's lower right he boldly inscribes and signs in black ink: "For / George Gianetti / with my best wishes / Geo S Brooks." The most fun and unusual signed photograph we've ever handled -- and we've handled a great many. unknown

"The scarlet woman of Wall Street" was the nickname of the four-times bankrupt Erie Railroad Company when in 1939 this able executive was named as a court-appointed trustee; within two years he had got company out of receivership and in 1941 was named its president serving in that capacity until 1949 finally leaving the company in a profitable state in 1956. On "Erie Railroad Company" letterhead Woodruff replies stiffly: "This will acknowledge receipt of your cards with the understanding that this signature will not be used for any purpose other than your collection." On October 4 1929 a bit of aviation history took place in Punxsutawney Pennsylvania when the Grube Airport officially opened and the first airmail from that airport was flown; Transcontinental Air Mail Service Datin flew 2200 letters to Pittsburgh 300 of them signed by him; two days later he died in a biplane crash during a stunt exhibition at Ebensberg Pennsylvania. Signed Postal Card heavy stock 9�" X 5" Punxsatawney PA 1929 October 4. Addressed to George W. Kessler. Very good. Mild bit of wear. One side of this large picture postcard depicts a typical airplane of the day likely a Transcontinental Air Mail Service plane soaring amidst a cloudy sky. The message side bears the 5-cent "Air Mail" stamp and a McKeesport Pennsylvania cancellation of 1929 October 8. The message portion bears a finely printed note: "Dear Sir: -- It was my privilege to carry your Air Mail yesterday. Thanks very kindly for your patronage. My reward will be your continued use of the Air Mail." Above the closing word "Pilot" Datin signs boldly in black ink. At center of this side is a large square special cancellation honoring the dedication of the Grube Airport and indicating "Friday October 4 1929 / Punxsatawney - Pennsylvania." A handsome and decorative piece with a two large blue and red stripes running horizontally across the top with "VIA AIR MAIL" printed between. The record shows that special airmail envelopes were selling well on that day at the dedication -- presumably this very type of commemorative card bearing this special one-day-only cancellation. This would have been one of the 300 items signed by Datin flown on that very day. Ironically by the time this was further cancelled in McKeesport Datin had been dead for two days. A most unusual and scarce aviation and philatelic item. unknown

Half-length portrait in dress as Charley Weaver signed and inscribed in blue ballpoint across his chest: "To my pal / Donald Burnell / one of my people / from that wild old man / Charley Weaver / & / Cliff Arquette." Most of this runs on top of his white shirt making for good contrast but a few words appear on top of his patterned tie where contrast is poor.
