Prolific" doesn't even begin to describe this English novelist editor and journalist who penned a staggering number of juvenile novels -- more than 160 according to one count -- as well as plays short stories biographies anthologies and other writings. Signature and inscription on a 4¼" X 3 3/4" slip n.y. Very good. Small mounting trace on verso. Bold and sloppy "With many apologies / for my long delay / GM Fenn / Syon Lodge / Isleworth / England." TMS on inner panel of a 6½" X 4½" heavy stock Christmas card n.p. n.y. Fine. Front glossy panel features color photograph of lit candles amidst sprigs of evergreen and poinsettias and "Season's Greetings" card against blue background; opening at top the lower inside panel displays a printed seasonal message in red while the blank upper panel features a greeting so carefully phrased it's not a stretch to consider it an unrhymed poem. Titled "For all the children in Mr. Bean's class" it reads: "Thank you thank you for your gifts -- the / Thanksgiving card and the Christmas card / the paperweight that you made and the stamps. / May Christmas bless you all. / With love" and boldly signed in black ballpoint. WALDEN, Walter (1870-?)
Autograph Manuscript Signed
This author specialized in spinning yarns for young adults in such books as "Boy Scouts Afloat; or Scouting on the Mississippi in a House Boat" 1918 "Boy Scouts Courageous: Stories of Scout Valor and Daring" 1918 and "The Hidden Islands" 1920. AMS 1p 8½" X 11" n.p. n.y. Near fine. On custom letterhead Walden neatly prints the name of his latest novel -- "The Voodoo Gold Trail / by / Walter Walden" -- plus title of the first chapter and a lengthy section of the first couple paragraphs signing a second time boldly at the conclusion. While the admirer who wrote him requested an actual working manuscript page Walden instead has neatly written out this passage -- though likely he copied it off of his original manuscript for it bears words and phrases which he's crossed out. From the collection of Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing his printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen accompanies this item. Also present is a copy of "The Voodoo Gold Trail" Boston: Small Maynard & Company 1922 a very good first edition of this small 8vo volume in blue cloth. unknown
