This Scottish portrait and landscape painter friend of Walter Scott and Robert Burns is often called the "father of Scottish landscape painting; as an architect he designed Edinburgh's Dean Bridge and part of St. Bernard's Well; his many children were all artists of note as well. Autograph Fragment unsigned 3�" X 1" irregular tipped to contemporary 6" X 4" sheet n.p. n.y. Curious and comical note perhaps a postscript clipped from a letter reading in full: "the sooner the Better / a Bad pen and worse / Ink." This lesser-known member of the Hal Roach "Our Gang" comedy shorts "the kind of Our Ganger" says one critic "who never had a story built around her but who could steal a scene from a more seasoned member with a perfectly executed popeyed look or scowl"; a tiny brunette always wearing a large bow in her hair she appeared in a number of episodes between 1930 and 1933; ironically her last film appearance was as an autograph collector in the 1933 Jean Harlow film "Bombshell." Brief bizarre note concerning fellow dime novelist "Oil" or "Oll" Coomes 1858-1920: "Consult some cyclopedia or / undertaker. / T.C. Harbaugh / Oll Coomes was Killed last / summer." Coomes was one of the best known of the Texas dime novelists and was killed in a car crash in Iowa in 1920. Interesting snide and rather morbid! The twins each sign large and bold in black fineline Ann on top Abby below near the lower left. Not a First Day Cover but the enterprising collector used this stamp because it depicts newspapers being pulled off a colonial hand-pull press and this cancellation as relevant to the coincidental nature of twin sisters in identical professions. This philanthropist and patron of the arts was heiress to the Filene department store fortune and in 1968 gave land in Virginia and two million dollars to the federal government to create Wolf Trap Farm Park the first national park dedicated to the performing arts; she was the first woman to receive a M.Ed. degree from Harvard University and the first woman appointed chairman of the Federal Women's Prisons for the Rehabilitation and Education of Women named by President Coolidge. Noted British playwright best remembered for "Peg o' My Heart" 1913 a smash hit featuring his wife Laurette Taylor; he also wrote and produced the film version which starred Marion Davies. AQS 1p 8" X 10" n.p. May 1923. Near fine. Handsome quotation of a brief dialogue speech given by the character Arthur Carlton on page 28 of the 1922 first edition of "The National Anthem: A Drama." Reads: "Listen to that damned senseless barbaric discord. The kind of sound you'd expect Indians or negroes to beat out when they're frenzied with rum. --- Listen! You can hear their brains rattling in their skulls. God! It's become like a National Anthem! Whenever a band strike up a jazz I feel like standing up and taking my hat off. It's our national anthem." Nicely accomplished in black fountain pen signed and dated at the conclusion. From the collection of University of Chicago geology professor Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Having died at age twenty-six Cartan's autograph is quite scarce and good music content letters rare. Comes with a TLS in French from what may have been Cartan's agent dated 21 April 1932 just after Cartan's death presenting this Cartan letter to music critic Irving Schwerke 1893-1975. unknown

The handsome leading man is best remembered for television's "The Sheriff of Cochise" 1956-60 retitled "U.S. Marshal" though he also appeared in some Westerns and the 3D horror film "Revenge of the Creature." PS 9" X 5�" n.p. n.y. Very good. Small tape stains at couple of corners not affecting image or signature. Nifty printed photograph mat finish showing Bromfield seated on the hood of a white station wagon with whitewall tires waving his ten-gallon hat at the viewer. Printed across the driver's door and passenger door behind it is: "JOHN BROMFIELD TV STAR / U.S. MARSHAL SHERIFF OF COCHISE." Above the vehicle Bromfield adds his huge 6" signature boldly in blue ballpoint. Although not so indicated this was signed at an appearance Bromfield made at Chicago's Amphitheatre in March 1961 and a copy of the newspaper advertisement accompanies this item. unknown

German-born American photographer; in 1933 he served as still photographer for the 1933 Arnold Fanck mountaineering film "SOS Eisberg" which featured Leni Riefenstahl. Signed Postal Cover 6�" X 3�" n.p. n.y. Single 4-cent "George W. Norris" stamp at upper right. At lower left in blue ballpoint Vogel signs boldly. NOT a First Day Cover but a choice example of this 1961 stamp subtitled "'Gentle Knight of. Progressive Ideals'" featuring Vogel's portrait of the long-time Nebraska senator 1861-1944. Also an ANS 1p heavy stock 6�" X 3�" card n.p. New York NY 1971 July 23. Addressed to Paul Johnston. Fine. Gracious note to an admirer returning the postal card and apologizing for delay.
