Original Typed Letter Signed TLS from Senator and Presidential hopeful Howard Baker to a Mr. Bronx Sledge of Macon MS. Dated May 3 1979. In part: "With respect to the 1980 Presidential election I am flattered by your expression of encouragement and support. While I do intend to be a candidate next year I have not formally announced my candidacy as yet. I have however set up a committee with the FEC to receive contributions and finance the travel which I am undertaking to "test the waters" for a Presidential race in the next few months."<br /> <br /> On Official United States Senate letterhead. Boldly signed by Baker at the conclusion. In the end Baker well known for his involvement in the Watergate investigation did run for President in 1980. He went on to withdraw from the race after losing to Bush and to Reagan in the primaries. It was suspected that he would be chosen as the VP canididate under Reagan but Bush was eventually selected instead. A nice piece from the great election of 1980! Inscribed Jan. 3 1954 By Zeisl To His Friend Hugo Apparently A Close Friend Of The Schoenfeld Sisters Violinists. Erich Zeisl 1905 - 1959 Often Spelled Eric Was An Austrian-Born American Composer. Born To A Middle Class Jewish Family In Vienna Zeisl Was The Son Of Kamilla Feitler And Siegmund Zeisl. His Musical Precocity Enabled Him To Gain A Place At The Vienna State Academy Against The Wishes Of His Family When He Was 14 At Which Age His First Song Was Published. While There He Studied With Richard Stöhr Joseph Marx And Hugo Kauder. He Won A State Prize For A Setting Of The Requiem Mass In 1934 But His Jewish Background Made It Difficult To Obtain Work And Publication. After The Anschluss In 1938 He Fled First To Paris Where He Began Work On An Opera Based On Joseph Roth's Job And Then To New York City. Eventually He Went To Hollywood Where He Worked On Film Music But Increasingly Felt Isolated And Ill At Ease With The Production-Line Demands Of His Employers. Among The Films For Which He Wrote Music Were The Postman Always Rings Twice 1946 And Abbott And Costello Meet The Invisible Man 1951. Zeisl's Style Was Essentially Tonal And Conservative Compared To Contemporaries Such As Arnold Schoenberg And Thus Not Totally Unsuited To Film Music Composition. But His Heart Lay Elsewhere. At One Stage He Was Employed To Arrange The Music For A Highly Inaccurate Stage Show About The Life Of Tchaikovsky Song Without Words. His Anguish About His Reduction To Such Work Together With The Straits To Which Other Émigré Composers In America Were Reduced At The Time Is Evident In A Letter Written To A Friend In 1945: 'Even Milhaud Stravinsky Tansman Are Struggling. Béla Bartók Died In New York Of Hunger! . Last Year I Orchestrated A Tchaikowsky Operetta Which Provided A Living For 8 Months But Why Does Tchaikowsky Have To Be Put Into An Operetta . No Composer Is Important Here'. Nonetheless Zeisl Was Able Eventually To Find Academic Appointments And Time To Compose In His Own Style. These Works Included A Variety Of Chamber Music A Piano Concerto A Concerto For Cello Written For Gregor Piatigorsky And A Setting For Choir Soloists And Orchestra Of Psalm 92 In Hebrew Which He Titled Requiem Ebraico Hebrew Requiem Written In 1944-5 In Memory Of His Father. A Work Of Variations For Orchestra Was Based On The Christmas Carol "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear." His Opera Hiob Job Was Never Completed. Zeisl Was Married To Gertrud Susanne Jellinek. His Daughter Barbara Zeisl Schoenberg Married Ronald Schoenberg The Son Of The Composer Arnold Schoenberg. His Grandson Is Lawyer E. Randol Schoenberg. Zeisl's Status As A Proscribed Musician Under The Nazi Regime Has Been One Element In A Revival Of Interest In His Music Some Of Which Is Now Available On Cd. This letter is of particular interest as Tennessee Senator Cordell Hull expresses without disguise his view of America and the trouble her citizens are in. The Inscription Occurred Just Before Roosevelt Left Office. " In 1888 Loeb Was Elected Official Stenographer Of The Lower House Of The New York Legislature And Over The Years Gained Political Experience And Acquaintances Serving As Private Secretaries To The Lieutenant-Governor President Pro Tempore Of The State Senate Speaker Of The Assembly And To 1891 Candidate For Governor Jacob Sloat Fassett. When Theodore Roosevelt Became Governor Of New York He Was Appointed As One Of His Official Stenographers. His Ability To Do Things Without Specific Instructions And His Familiarity With Public Officials And Affairs Attracted Roosevelt's Notice And Leob Became His Private Secretary In 1899. On September 14 1901 On The Night President William Mckinley Was Assassinated Loeb Met Vice President Roosevelt During His Dash To Buffalo At The North Creek New York Train Station Delivering The Telegram From Secretary Of State John Hay Announcing Mckinley's Death At 2:15 That Morning. In The White House He Served As Assistant Secretary To The President From 1901 To 1903 And Then Succeeded George B. Cortelyou As Secretary To The President In 1903 Where He Stayed By The President's Side For The Rest Of Roosevelt's Time In Office. Loeb Was A Very Intimate Aide To Roosevelt And Was One Of The Era's Most Powerful Figures. As Roosevelt's Principal Advisor He Participated In Shaping Policy And Solving Political Problems. Acting As The President's Public Alter-Ego He Unofficially Became The Nation's First Presidential Press Secretary As Loeb Was Empowered To Speak For The President And Reporters Were Able To Contact Him Twenty-Four Hours A Day. Known To Those In The Press As "Stonewall Loeb" He Controlled Access To The President In An Unprecedented Fashion Dealing With The Queries Of Most Of The President's Visitors Without Their Ever Having To Disturb Him. When Roosevelt Took To Learning Judo Then Known As Jiu-Jitsu From Yamashita Yoshiaki In March And April 1904 And Trained In The White House Loeb And The President's Japanese Naval Attaché Isamu Takeshita Were His Training Partners. Roosevelt Once Described Him As "The Best Secretary That Any President Ever Had". In Addition In His Own Autobiography Roosevelt Stated That Loeb Was Responsible For Starting The Investigations Into The Frauds Committed By The Sugar Trust In New York's Custom House. He Also Played A Part In Aligning The 1908 Republican National Convention Behind The Nomination Of William H. Taft. In January 1908 He Brought It To The President's Attention That There Was No Front-Runner For The Republican Nomination To Succeed Him And That Many Republican Leaders In The United States Congress Were Under The Suspicion That Roosevelt Had Every Intention Of Running For A Third Term. Leob Urged The President That He Would Only Be Able To Sustain The Credibility Of His Pledge Not To Run Again By Endorsing A Candidate. Loeb Told Roosevelt That Any Nominee Could Win If Only He Would Back Him. In Response Roosevelt Said That He Would Favor Elihu Root And Authorized Loeb At That Moment To Go To See Root And Make The Offer Of His Endorsement. Root Then Secretary Of State Was Astonished By The Endorsement But Did Not Accept It Because He Judged Himself To Be Unelectable. Loeb Reported Back To The President That Same Day To Report On His Meeting. Roosevelt Accepted Root's Decision And Told Loeb That His Choice Then Was William Howard Taft Saying That He Had The Experience To Run The Government. After His Return To The United States He Spent The Remainder Of His Active Career Working For Rko. Auric mentions a concert he must give at Mme Japy de Beaucourt's who held a salon in honor of the review directed by Ricciotto Canudo Montjoie ! : ""Je dois jouer - encore ! vendredi chez Mme J. de B. non point n'est ce pas Mme Jean de B mais Mme Canudo de Beaucourt"" ""I must play - again! Friday at Mme J. de B.'s not isn't it Mme Jean de B but Mme Canudo de Beaucourt"". He adds: ""Montjoie et Canudo gras et bête italboche."" ""Montjoie and Canudo fat and stupid Italian."" Having moved in artistic circles since her earliest childhood - she was the daughter of Alexandre and niece of Thadée Natanson creators of the famous Revue Blanche - Bolette Natanson 1892-1936 became friends with Jean Cocteau Raymond Radiguet Georges Auric Jean Hugo and Colette. Passionate about fashion she left Paris for the United States with Misia Sert close friend of Coco Chanel and was hired at Goodman. With her husband Jean-Charles Moreux they created the gallery Les Cadres on boulevard Saint-Honoré in 1929 and frequented numerous artists and intellectuals. Their success was immediate and they multiplied projects: creating the fireplace for Winnaretta de Polignac decorating the château de Maulny designing Baron de Rothschild's private mansion creating frames for industrialist Bernard Reichenbach and finally creating the storefront for Colette's beauty institute in 1932. Bolette Natanson also framed works by her prestigious painter friends: Bonnard Braque Picasso Vuillard Man Ray André Dunoyer de Segonzac etc. Despite this meteoric rise she took her own life in December 1936 a few months after her father's death. unknown‎

Interesting manuscript written following the appointment of Adolphe Messimy to the post of Minister of War: ""Ce général ministre avait en somme très noblement répondu. Il faudra enfin décider un jour ou l'autre sans aucun mystère que la Défense Nationale est républicaine."" ""This general minister had in sum responded very nobly. We must finally decide one day or another without any mystery that National Defense is republican."" Indeed the newly elected minister sought to redefine relations between political power and military authorities. Alain reproaches the military world for its opacity ""Comment la France sera-t-elle défendue Nous n'en savons rien. . chez nous même les députés ne s'en font aucune idée."" ""How will France be defended We know nothing about it. . even our deputies have no idea."" before proposing solutions: ""Donc il faudrait qu'il soit bien entendu que chaque chef garde une large initiative dans l'exécution d'un programme déterminé. Et ce programme ne dépend pas seulement de la science militaire ; c'est aux ministres avec le conseil des grands chefs qu'il appartient de le déterminer."" Challenged because of his radical anti-Semitic positions Drumont addresses to an abbot a singular letter on the question of dueling: ""I understand everything a priest must think about dueling and I agree with you but it is a necessity in certain cases"" Far from renouncing his opinions ""All the Jews in the world send me challenges"" the author defends himself by adopting a sarcastic position regarding dueling: ""The best way to avoid them is to declare oneself ready to accept them"". The humor that closes the letter notably through the insertion of a fictional dialogue shows all the derision with which Drumont considers his situation: ""'ah you don't fight Are you sure - quite sure. - Well! Some of the pages are numbered by Céline at top left. The last folio numbered 159 is signed by the writer at the bottom. Two leaves contain previously unpublished passages: the first a few lines long refers to the Professeur. The second leaf numbered 136 features another full-page text on the verso which we did not find in the ‘Professeur Y' or in any of the published works of Céline. Céline refers in this unpublished passage to article 75 of the penal code condemning to the death penalty any French citizen found guilty of intelligence with the enemy. It also mentions a certain ""Me Johann Niels Borggensen"" no doubt a pseudonym for his lawyer Thorvald Mikkelsen: "".supposedly to protect me from police curiosity! holy cow! he was having a ball.when you've got the warrant up your arse crossed out: article 75 anyone can do what they like with you! what a joke! we can do what we like with you.it wouldn't have been Borggensen perhaps someone else would have been worse.give me article 75 and I'll put the whole of France in a Mouse hole for you! and Germany with it! and England such a nag and Europe with it! no bomb needed! H ! Y ! Z ! I'll make you fit the atom into a."" Important set of working manuscripts bearing witness to the writing of ‘Conversations with Professor Y' Céline's true Ars poetica. Since the first part of ‘Féerie pour une autre fois' Fable for Another Time was not as successful as expected Céline wanted to give the release of the second part - Normance - as much publicity as possible and restore his reputation after his years of exile in Germany and Denmark. Instead of writing the usual promotional note prière d'insérer – he suggested to publisher Gaston Gallimard this eulogy written in the style of an imaginary interview between himself and Professor Y alias Colonel Réséda a prostatic old man. This zany ""interviouwe"" was published in several parts in the Nouvelle Revue française in 1954 and the finished work through Éditions Gallimard the following year. Céline speaks fervently of his style and his conception of literature and vehemently criticizes the world of letters and public taste. Unlike Céline's other works the genesis of this text crucial to the understanding of his oeuvre is poorly documented and its manuscripts are rare. The Pléiade edition of Celinian novels contains only a few pages of an earlier version very close to the published text. This set of pages covering every passage of the text contains both heavily crossed-out sheets and neatly rewritten notes. It bears witness to the different stages of the writer's work: drafting an initial sheet crossing out and rewriting on the same page then transcribing short passages on separate notes. The last page of the text is extensively crossed out and rewritten resulting in a slightly different version of the published version. The manuscript also contains the famous metaphor of the metro typical of the writer's emotive style compared here to the ""dry language"" of his peers: ""Did you see Have you noticed All caught up in my metro!. what do I leave on the surface. the worst rubbish in cinema!. foreign languages then!. translations!. retranslations of our worst rubbish that they use for their ""parlants"" talking pictures superb foreign languages!. in addition to the psychology! the psychological mumbo jumbo!. all the crap. . The recipient and date have been determined by Proust scholar Jean-Yves Tadié. Three pages in black ink on a double leaf edged in black. A fold inherent to the mailing. A sombre and admirable letter steeped in Proustian melancholy. The future author of In Search of Lost Time feels more than ever the loss of his mother during the New Year period. The famously generous Proust also asks his faithful confidante Madame Catusse to buy a gift for the Straus couple whose wife inspired the character of the Comtesse de Guermantes.   The end of 1907 apparent date of this letter alluding to the approaching New Year marks the second holiday season spent without Madame Proust who had died two years earlier: ""New Year's Day is only an occasion for me - as if occasions were needed! -- to reminisce and weep"". Proust had also expressed this sentiment in a letter to Anna de Noailles the year before ""New Year's Day had a terrible evocative power over me. It suddenly gave me back the memories of Maman that I had lost the memory of her voice"" February 1906. This fateful moment acted on Proust like a pernicious madeleine at once a sensory reminiscence and an acute awareness of his loss. He would soon begin writing In Search of Lost Time to conjure up this mother figure whose absence would remain unbearable. For the time being Proust is busy writing a series of Pastiches for Le Figaro ""which were in reality only a penultimate detour before writing La Recherche"" George D. Painter. One of these Pastiches dealt with the swindle perpetrated on the president of De Beers in which Proust had invested. Imagining himself already ruined he mentions these unfortunate circumstances in capital letters: ""HAVE I REPORTED MY FINANCIAL DESASTERS TO YOU OVER THE TELEPHONE ."" Overwhelmed by ailments he is also plagued by one of his many asthma attacks ""provoked or exasperated by these terrible fogs"" forcing him into reclusion and even silence: ""telephoning is very dangerous for me. And I'm also very tired when it comes to writing"".   The recipient Mme Catusse was a friend of Proust's mother and became an invaluable support to the writer. Proust's prolific correspondence with the woman Ghislain de Diesbach had dubbed the writer's Notre-Dame-des-Corvées represents an inexhaustible resource of insights into his secret life and fears. Proust had called her in a panic during an aphasia attack suffered by his mother shortly before her death. As he became increasingly isolated after moving into 102 boulevard Haussmann the previous year Proust sought her help in many matters including the purchase of numerous gifts: ""I would have liked to ask you if you had by any chance seen anything suitable for the Straus although I always dislike coinciding with New Year's Day"". This sentiment would inspire a passage in The Captive castigating those same ""New Year's Day presents"" given to Madame Verdurin: ""those singular and superfluous objects which still appear to have been just taken from the box in which they were offered and remain for ever what they were at first"" The Captive C.K. Known for his frenzied displays of prodigality Proust overcomes his aversion to these occasional gifts. The smallest favor to the writer gave rise to extravagant expenses.
