304:495 mm. Signed at lower left: "Laur de Brunhoff". A charming, large-format watercolour showing Celesteville, the capital of "Le pays des Éléphants", Babar's Kingdom. The illustration was used as a double-page spread in "Babar à la fête de Célesteville" (1954) and thus bears a few pencilled marks by the printer in the blank margins. - The children’s classic, Babar, began as a bedtime story that Cécile de Brunhoff told her young sons, Laurent and Mathieu, in 1930, when they were five and four years old, respectively. They loved the story about the little elephant so much that they asked their father, who was an artist, to draw pictures for them of the elephant world their mother had described. He did and eventually created a book, Histoire de Babar: le petit éléphant (The Story of Babar), which was published by Jardin des Modes, a family-run publishing house. Jean de Brunhoff created six more Babar books. - De Brunhoff, who holds both French and American citizenship, was made an Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur. - Perfectly preserved.

Glanz probably assembled the present album on the occasion of a visit to the German artists' association "Ponte Molle Society" on 18 March 1843. The Society, a humorous artists' club based at the Palazzo Serlupi near the Pantheon, was a popular venue for German artists and Rome travellers, offering art exhibitions, events, and a well-stocked library. In 1845 it metamorphosed into the more serious-minded "Deutscher Künstlerverein". The most prominent contributor to this album is the Viennese painter and engraver Carl Rahl (1812-65), who had been living in Rome since 1836 and was closely involved with the Ponte Molle Society, serving as its "People's Tribune" in 1840/41. After his return to Vienna in 1850, Rahl became professor at the academy. A precursor to Makart, he championed a drastic and colourful eclecticism which exerted an enormous influence on the painters of Vienna's Ringstrasse era (cf. Thieme/Becker XXVII, 570). Geburtstag: "Mein teurer Freund! Wie soll ich Dir nur für Dein liebes Schreiben danken? Ich danke Dir allem voran für Deine liebe Anteilnahme an meinem 70er. Ich habe ihn gar nicht bemerkt, als er sich mir auf den Rücken gesetzt hat, und so merke ich ihn auch bisher nicht. Aber wofür ich Dir besonders danke, sind Deine gesunden Worte, die eben das widerspiegelten, was ich mir selbst gedacht habe: dass nämlich nun wieder ein Kapitel abgeschlossen ist. Das erste waren die Plakate. Das zweite: das dekorative Suchen und der Abbruch der alten Formen; das dritte die Konzentration im eigenen Ich und das Anerkennen der Notwendigkeit von Hilfe nach meinen bescheidenen [Versuchen?], und nichts ist ein besserer Lebensratgeber als die herausgerutschten Worte des Hasses der Feinde. Für das Kurhaus fertigte er aus Dankbarkeit ein Ölgemälde für den Speisesaal an, das oberhalb der Eingangstür angebracht und am 15. Mai 1932 enthüllt wurde. Das Gemälde mit dem Namen "Bleib gesund, gesegnete Quelle der Gesundheit" hat eine unkonventionelle fünfeckige Form.

8vo. 32 ff., including 15 pp. of poems and 32 pp. with 39 entries and 1 p. with contemporary contemplative entries by three writers. Contemporary limp vellum, using an old manuscript. All the entries in this early 17th century friendship album, which is also notable for its unusual format and binding, date from Zumler's sojourn at the Royal School of St Afra in Meissen in Saxony, where he was educated from September 1598 to August 1604. Hence, this is also an early and unusual example of a public school friendship album, rather than than of a university student. Apart from a number of later clerics - including an early relation of Georg Agricola - most contributors are boys or teachers who later achieved some renown as scholars, such as the humanist Gallus von Racknitz. The entries are prefixed by 15 handwritten pages of Latin poems, all copied from the works of Georg Fabricius (1516-71), who had been director of the St Afra's in 1546. - Noteworthy contributors include: 1) Gallus Baron Racknitz (1590-1658), poet and humanist. - 2) Moritz III Baron Racknitz (b. ca 1590, d. before 1658), cousin of Gallus v. Racknitz. - 3) Michael Fleischer (1580-1653), clergyman in Krakau in Saxony. - 4) Paul Werner (d. 1626) of Gottlau, deacon at Seyda near Schweinitz. - 5) Johannes Helbig (ca 1590-1646), administrator at St Afra's school from 1608 to 1645. - 6) Caspar von Hermsdorf (d. 1619). - 7) Bartolomäus Sättler (dates unknown), a son of Jacob Sättler (1540-1619), clergyman at St Nikolai in Freiberg. Friendship album of Johann Hotze, comprising 46 entries by Swiss and German scientists and scholars, including Daniel Bernoulli, Johann Jacob Breitinger, and Johann Ernst Hebenstreit. Tübingen, Leipzig, Frankfurt, Coburg, Erfurt, Erlangen, Halle, Jena, Basel, Zurich, Strasbourg, 1753-1757.
Oblong 8vo. Title page and 97 ff. (46 of which are inscribed). Red morocco, spine and covers lavishly gilt. The album contains entries by many outstanding scientists and scholars of the time, including not only Bernoulli, Breitinger and Hebenstreit, but also Christian Augustus Crusius (Protestant theologian and philosopher, 1715-75), Johannes Gesner (physician and mathematician, 1709-90), Christian Gottlieb Ludwig (physician and botanist, 1709-73), Casimir Christoph Schmidel (naturalist, 1718-92), Heinrich Friedrich Delius (physician, 1720-91), Philipp Friedrich Gmelin (botanist, 1721-68), Christoph Jacob Trew (botanist, 1695-1769), Abraham Gotthelf Kästner (mathematician and teacher of Gauss, 1719-1800), Philipp Adolph Böhmer (physician, anatomist and personal physician to King Frederick William II of Prussia, 1711-89), and Andreas Elias Büchner (head of the Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, 1701-69). The album's owner, Johannes Hotze (1734-1801), was a Swiss physician of great international renown and the cousin of the pedagogue Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi. Born into a well-known family of surgeons, Hotze attended the Collegium Carolinum in Zurich and then studied at Strasbourg, Tübingen and Leipzig, from where date numerous entries. Goethe, who visited him twice, described him as a "most intelligent and benevolent man" ("Dichtung und Wahrheit" IV, 18).

[Bismarck - Dedicatory Gift].
"Die Frauen Leipzigs" - "Die deutschen Frauen dem grössten deutschen Manne". Gift to Bismarck by the women of Leipzig in congratulation of his 80th birthday. Leipzig, (1895).
Full-page painting in colours and gilt on vellum, signed by Julia Schily-Koppers, and 7 paper leaves with coloured borders by Amalie Rost (one signed) around the signatures of the dedicatees. Stored in a full leather portfolio over wooden boards (412 x 574 mm) crafted by Amalie Sarling (signed): upper cover with leather carving and 4 tooled brass corner fittings with glass bosses; green moirée silk pastedowns and gilt inner dentelles to both covers. Homage album for Otto von Bismarck (1815-98), who had been forced to resign as chancellor of the German Empire five years previously, on the occasion of his 80th birthday - a time at which the aged statesman was fighting to shape his image for posterity. After a vote to send him a congratulatory birthday telegram had fallen through in the Reichstag, where Bismarck enjoyed little support, some 400 German cities immediately declared him an honorary citizen - a prelude to the Bismarck mania that would seize Germany after his death three years later. The fine painting on vellum by the Westfalian artist Julia Schily-Koppers (1855-1944) depicts a young woman with four children before a bust of Bismark, the pedestal inscribed, "From the German women to the greatest German man", with the statue of Germania in the background. - Koppers, a native of Borken near the Dutch border and grandmother of the German politician Otto Schily, had studied at the Düsseldorf Academy and enjoyed an excellent reputation. The borders of the signatory sheets were painted by the Leipzig architectural painter Amalie Rost (1845-1920). They enclose more than 250 signatures by women of Leipzig, including both artists and the bookbinder. - Binding loose; some duststaining to outer margin of vellum leaf, some dampstaining to paper leaves. Portfolio shows very slight rubbing, more pronounced on lower cover, but in all very finely preserved.

As far as my own views are involved in it, you will find them indicated both in the April number of The Antiquary (p. 145, 1st col.), and in the May number (p. p. 201 and 202). What we now have of the 'Homeric' poems, are comparatively such late productions that we cannot wonder at finding in them, especially as regards art, descriptions of a rather anachronistic kind. The Phoenikians, consequently, may have been worked into the earlier rhapsodic ballads at a later date. A comparison between the Eddic Nibelung lays and our national Epic will make this procedure very clear. Folio (200 x 307 mm). 2 pp. German manuscript (brown ink) on paper (watermark: letter F in circle). An extensive, uncommonly well-preserved letter to Georg Buchholzer (1503-66), Provost of St Nikolai in Berlin, regarding the latter’s altercation with the Brandenburgian court preacher Johann Agricola from Eisleben (1492-1566, also known as “Magister Eisleben”) about the treatment of the local Jews. Prince Elector Joachim II, who in 1539 had introduced the Reformation to Brandenburg and whose tolerant politics toward Jews enraged the population, had long desired a reconciliation between Luther and his former disciple Agricola, and he must have suspected that Provost Buchholzer was poisoning Luther’s mind against his court preacher. Buchholzer therefore wrote to Luther requesting an interpretation of some Biblical verses by which Agricola justified his pro-Jewish stance, and in his answer Luther insists that Buchholzer has done well to preach against the Jews and shall continue to do so, ignoring the habitual liar Agricola: “Grace and Peace. My dear Provost! I must be brief with writing, for the sake of my weak head. You are aware that you have no previous association with me, nor I with you, other than that you recently wrote to me asking for an explanation regarding several statements. And even if you were to write me many things about M. Eisleben, how could I believe you alone? For whoever says that you or anyone in Berlin or in all of Brandenburg is inciting me against Eisleben, if he says so unwittingly, may God forgive him, but if he says it knowingly, then he is a roguish liar, as well as M. Eisleben himself has lied frequently, here in Wittenberg. M. Eisleben needs nobody to incite me against him; he himself is much better at that, much better than anyone whom he might suspect of such dealing. He knows that full well. [...] In my opinion, he will give up his life before he gives up his lying. – You have preached against the Jews and fought serious battles over that with the Margrave. [...] And you were quite right to do so. Stand fast and persevere! The words against you which you quoted to me, allegedly protecting the Jews, I will not hope to be true, nor shall I believe that M. Eisleben ever will preach or ever has preached such. I do not yet consider him so deeply fallen. May God prevent him! [...] For then M. Eisleben would not be the Elector’s preacher, but a true devil, letting his sayings be so shamefully misused to the damnation of all those who associate with Jews. For these Jews are not Jews, but devils incarnate who curse our Lord, who abuse His mother as a whore and Him as Hebel Vorik and a bastard, this is known for certain. And anyone who is capable of eating or drinking or associating with such a foul mouth is a Christian as well as the devil is a saint. [...] You may show this letter to whomever you wish. I do not know, nor do I care, who wrote the other three letters from Wittenberg to Berlin. You will undoubtedly confess this to be the first letter you ever received from me. For your name and person were previously unknown to me [...]” (translated). - Luther had apparently forgotten that several years previously, in late 1539, he had answered a letter of Buchholzer’s inquiring about Catholic rites still in use in Reformed Brandenburg. More notably, although Luther is writing to a fellow scholar, this letter is written in German so as that the recipient may show it “to whomever he wishes” – that is to say, to the Elector himself, thus providing Buchholzer with a writ of protection against any suspicion which Joachim may harbour against him. - The Hebrew words “Hebel Vorik” (vanity and emptiness) are taken from Isaiah 30:7. They were part of a Jewish prayer in which Jews thanked God for having made them different from those peoples who worshipped “Hebel Vorik”, though Luther construed the words as a code for Jesus Christ. - Luther’s anti-Judaism had not always been this rabid – as a young man he had spoken out judiciously against the traditional defamation of Jews and against all forms of forcible conversion – but he soon grew increasingly bitter, and by 1543 his attitude was one of undisguised loathing. His most notorious antisemitic pamphlet, “On the Jews and Their Lies”, was published only months before the present letter was written. With the same rhetorical skill with which he had previously ridiculed the papacy he now invoked a grotesque abhorrence of Judaism. As an embodiment of his sentiments in his later years, demonstrating how precisely the antisemitic church politics and discourse of the 1540s matched Luther’s instructions, the letter has been quoted or paraphrased by several important biographies of the Reformer (cf. M. Brecht, Luther, vol. 3 [1987], p. 344; most recently: L. Roper, Luther [2016], p. 532 n. 33). - Less than two years later, in a letter dated March 9, 1545, Luther would write to Elector Joachim II directly, warning him against the “tricks” of the Jews, in whom he is said to have too much confidence, adding that he is “glad that the Provost [Buchholzer] is so severe on those Jews, which is a proof of his loyalty to your Grace; and I encourage him to continue in the path he has chosen”. - Condition report: several corrections in the text by Luther’s own hand. Date of receipt noted by Buchholzer at the foot of the verso page: “Received by me in Berlin on Wednesday after St Egyd [5 September] anno etc. 43.” Slightly browned and brownstained throughout; traces of contemporary folds. Not noticeably wrinkled; no significant edge tears; a beautifully preserved specimen. - Provenance: before 1914 nothing more of the letter was known than the words branding Agricola an incorrigible liar (“will give up his life before he gives up his lying”), which Buchholzer had hurled at his adversary during a disputation as late as 1562, offering to show him the passage in Luther’s letter. In the early 19th century, the editors of Agricola’s writings confessed that such a letter could not be found (cf. B. Kordes, Agricola’s Schriften möglichst vollständig verzeichnet [Altona 1817], p. 393: “To my knowledge, this letter does not exist”). Only in 1914 was it discovered in the collection of Baron Heinrich von Hymmen (1880–1960), and in the same year the theologian G. Kawerau published it in the appendix to volume 15 of Luther’s letters. It was still in the Hymmen collection in 1947 when the critical Weimar edition published it, based on a photograph. The Hymmen family is known to have supported the Protestant cause: during the Nazi era, Heinrich placed his Unterbach castle at the disposal of the illegal Confessing Church; the theologian Johannes Hymmen was Vice President of the “Evangelischer Oberkirchenrat” from 1936. The letter first surfaced in the trade more than three decades ago (Stargardt 630 [1983], lot 1238: DM 172,270 including premium and taxes; remarkably, that same year a four-page Luther manuscript [Z&K 2/II, 1856] commanded no more than DM 10,000). Was die Marienburg betrifft, so trägt der Verleger des Blattes Bedenken, die Abbildung zu benützen, da er - wohl mit Recht - fürchtet, eine Kopie derselben könne als Nachdruck bezeichnet werden. - Was ferner die kleinen Notizen anlangt, so behalte ich mir deren Beschaffung gern hier am Orte vor, um dieselben möglichst frisch liefern zu können [...]". - Seit 1839 als freier Schriftsteller tätig, betätigte sich der aus Leipzig stammende Schriftsteller als Übersetzer und Verfasser belletristischer Literatur. "Doch fanden alle diese schönwissenschaftlichen Schriften Oelckers' wenig Beachtung. Mehr Erfolg hatten seine 'Gedichte' (1847), die einen tiefen poetischen Gehalt offenbaren und durch eine feine Ausdrucksweise der Gedanken erfreuen. Bei der politischen Bewegung des Jahres 1848 nahm Oelckers an dem Vereinsleben in seiner Vaterstadt regen Antheil, und bei seinem ausgeprägten Gefühl für Recht und Wahrheit konnte es nicht ausbleiben, daß er im Festhalten an der neuen Reichsverfassung auch in den Dresdener Maiaufstand (1849) verwickelt ward. Als Hochverräther zu lebenslänglicher Zuchthausstrafe in Eisen verurtheilt, büßte er dieselbe seit 1851 in Waldheim" (ADB XXIV, 238f.). Nach einem Aufenthalt in Porto Alegre in Brasilien 1861 kehrte Oelckers im Jahr darauf nach Deutschland zurück. "Hier wirkte er in der Stille, soweit seine Kräfte reichten, litterarisch weiter und schrieb noch seine 'Humoristischen Geschichten' (IV, 1864-65), die gut erfunden und lebhaft erzählt sind, und seinen Roman 'Der Allerletzte' (IV, 1865)" (ebd.).

Corrected proofs for an article by Dumas, couched as an open letter addressed to the deputy Gustave Rivet, who had proposed legislation requiring investigations into the paternity of illegitimate children. An interesting document about the history of French social legislation at the end of the 19th century, containing substantive corrections and the author's signature; several pages are entirely handwritten. - With his bill, Rivet had pushed for inquiries into paternity and for parents' shared legal responsibility for children born out of wedlock, as the fact that the biological father faced no legal consequences whatever resulted in shockingly high numbers of infant deaths and abandonments. In his article, Dumas reviews the relevant arguments for and against such legislation produced by various figures of society such as the former President of the Court of Appeals, M. Larombière, and derides the suggestion that novelists are to blame for having in their stories aroused an excess of pity for the fates of "seduced women". Dumas goes on to describe the case of a sixteen-year-old housemaid who gave birth to two illegitimate children and sued the father, her relative and guardian, for support. Not only did the court deny any obligation on the father's part to provide for his illegitimate children, but the father was even able to file a counter-suit against the mother for the inconveniences to which the trial had exposed him. - Dumas's article ends with a defence of the women faced with such an ordeal, and of all writers and playwrights who choose to write about these facts and indict this social injustice. He gives examples of various constellations and aspects of relevant cases and discusses serious social wrongs such as incest, endorsing an improvement of the lot of innocent children and their mothers through a law for the investigation of paternity. - Addenda: Two printed speeches at the Académie française by Raymond Poincaré (1909) and Henri-Robert (1924) and three printed poems by Élie Fourès, Fabre des Essarts and Maurice Boniface on the occasion of the inauguration of a monument for Dumas on the Place Malesherbes on 4 November 1883.

Vielleicht wären Sie in der Lage, es der Direktion zur Aufführung zu empfehlen [...]”. - Der in Wien geborene Nachkomme mehrerer Geschlechter von Seidenwebern und Seidenfabrikanten auf dem alten Wiener "Schottenfeld" war bis 1922 Direktor der Technischen Hochschul-Bibliothek in Graz (vgl. Kosch I, 460). Sein "schriftstellerisches Jugendwerk reicht von romantischer Märchenseligkeit bis zu herber Zeitkritik und Mitleidsethik. Die Freundschaft mit Peter Rosegger brachte ihn zur Synthese von naturalistische Milieuschilderung und gemütvollem Humor" (DBE). Nach Annahme einer Resolution gegen das nationalsozialistische Deutschland durch den österr. PEN-Club erklärte der Träger des Grillparzer-Preises des Jahres 1930 seinen Austritt aus dem Schriftstellerverband (1933). - Der Adressat des Briefes war seit 1910 Dramaturg des Deutschen Volkstheaters in Wien, später auch Professor an der Wiener Schauspielschule. Ebenso als Herausgeber tätig (u. a. die freimaurerische Zeitschrift ‘Der Zirkel’ und von 1919-23 die ‘Wiener Freimaurer-Zeitung), emigrierte der Vater des Dramaturgen und Regisseurs Joseph Glücksmann (1900-1963) 1938 nach Argentinien, wo er bis zu seinem Tod leben sollte.
