Near the bottom of a one sentence typed note dated 6 April 1966 sent him by noted Lincoln Scholar Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 on letterhead of "The Civil War Round Table of New York" Schary pens a bold reply in blue ballpoint. Gates had asked Schary "If you can make this one I would be very pleased to have you attend as my guest" referring no doubt to a Civil War Round Table guest lecture -- to which Schary replied "Dear Mr. Gates -- I would have enjoyed being there -- by some breakdown of U.S. Postal Service -- your invitation reached me on the 20th of April -- Perhaps next time -- Thanks -- Dore Schary." Most unusual in this form! Schary produced the 1955 documentary "The Battle of Gettysburg" hence his proven interest in the topic. unknown

The daughter of one of Abraham Lincoln's law partners and his presidential bodyguard Ward Hill Lamon 1828-93 she pieced together and edited her father's book "Recollections of Abraham Lincoln 1847-1865" Chicago 1895; a bawdy and not particularly popular companion to the president Lamon authored it was actually ghostwritten an 1872 "Life of Abraham Lincoln" that's considered the first debunking biography of the president. PS 8�" X 11" n.p. 1945 November 4. Very good. Small glue stain at upper right well away from image. This most unusual PS does not depict Teillard herself but rather is a thermofax copy of a 3�" X 3�" portrait of a young Ward Hill Lamon centered and with large margins. Early head-and-shoulders portrait showing a youthful Lamon with long curly hair and flowing goatee. On the ample lower margin his daughter inscribes it big and bold: "With regards of / Dorothy Lamon Teillard / November 4 1945." Though written while well into her 80s Teillard's script is fluid and attractive. A quite uncommon autograph in an unusual form. unknown

Most uncommon matte-finish IPS heavy stock 16" X 20" Chicago IL 1960 July 16. Near fine. Handsome well-known half-length portrait of a smiling Carpentier in his prime wearing wrestling trunks and a championship belt hands on hips; below this is the printed caption "Edouard Carpentier / World's Heavyweight Champion" and surrounding Carpentier are seven small inset images of him in action. Across his chest and down his torso he pens large and bold in blue ballpoint: "To My Good Wrestling Fan and Friend / Donald M. Burnell / Lots of Luck / From Edouard Carpentier / Chicage illinois sic / July 16 1960 / E. Carpentier." This quite nice and highly unusual item was likely created for some cryptic promotional purpose but it bears no photographer's credit or other identifications recto or verso.
