Oblong 8vo. ½ page. Cancelling his lecture due to an illness: "Je ne puis donner mon Cours aujourd'hui pour cause d'indisposition [...]". - Attribution in a former collector's hand on the reverse. Traces of mounting; presumably originally attached to the door of the lecture hall. - The scientist and philosopher Vogt published a number of notable works on zoology, geology and physiology. All his life he was engaged in politics, in the German Frankfurt Parliament of 1848-49 and during his emigration in Switzerland. Karl Marx scathingly replied to his attacks in his book "Herr Vogt" (1860). A proponent of scientific materialism and atheism, Vogt was also an early adherent to the theory of evolution, and Darwin mentions him in his introduction to "The Descent of Man".

Gern werde ich Ihnen die Indices meiner letzten Centurien zusenden [...] Die Angelegenheit mit den Pilzen der Novara empfehle ich Ihrem Wohlwollen [...]". - Heinrich Winter übernahm nach Gottlob Rabenhorst die Redaktion der Fachzeitschrift "Hedwigia", die sich der Kryptogamenkunde widmet, setzte Rabenhorsts Artikelreihe "'Fungi europaei exsiccati' fort und dehnte sie auch auf die außereuropäischen Pilze aus, so daß das Werk nunmehr den Titel führte: 'Rabenhorsti Fungi europaei et extraeuropaei'" (ADB XLIII, 468-470). - Leicht wasserfleckig mit leichten Stempel-Abklatschspuren.

Mit der Bitte um Unterstützung bei der Ergänzung von Wohlfarths Notizen zur Pflanzenart der "Kartäusernelke", zu einem Variantenfund des österreichischen Botanikers Anton Kerner und zu deren Systematisierung, welche im Beck'schen Werk "Flora von Hernstein" sich befunden hatten: "Eure Hochgeboren hatten vor einigen Jahren die Gewogenheit, hochderen Fl. v. Hernstein mir nach Fürstenberg i/M. zu senden. Von den daraus gemachten Excerpten ist beim Verzuge nach hier ein Teil mir verloren gegangen, namentlich [...] Dianthus Carthusianorum F. atrorubens Kern. nec. All. um Buchberg [...]". Bezüglich Schwierigkeiten, die Pflanzenart des "Kärntner Dunklen Mauerpfeffers" in der Literatur zu finden: "Würden Sie nicht hochgeneigtest mir mittheilen, wo Sedum atratum var. carinthiiacum Hoppe aufgestellt ist? Wir haben die hier vorhandene Litteratur nach allen Richtungen durchsucht, insbes. hat H. Prof. Dr. Gcke. [d. i. der Botaniker Christian Garcke] alles aufgeboten, doch umsonst [...]" (6. In Italian, to the Milanese gallery owner Vittorio Barbaroux, announcing that he will produce four new canvases ("quadri metafisici") inspired by the success of his metaphysical painting. De Chirico states that he has received all payments except one from Argentina, for which he asks his friend for help. In exchange, he offers him one of his works as a token of appreciation ("un mio ricordo in segno di riconoscenza"). He reassures him as to the quality and subject matter of the works with which he will soon entrust him for his Milan exhibition, giving their dimensions: "Ettore e Andromaca - mis. 100 x 70; Interno metafisico - 97 x 68; Trovatore - 63 x 50; Piazza d'Italia - 95 x 70", all of which are said to be very beautiful and which he is in no hurry to sell. He warns Barbaroux of the young painter Piero Zuffi, an adventurer who sent him the picture of a painting for authentication. He considers this "quadro metafisico con biscotti" a fake, and has given Zuffi a reply to this effect. Zuffi, having just returned penniless from a sojourn in France, would go on to enjoy a successful career as a theatre designer at Giorgio Strehler's Piccolo Teatro, then at La Scala in Milan. - Perforated. To Marcello Anchorena about his struggle to obtain a declaration from the president of an artistic society of the official Paris salons, a document he needs to show his work at a salon and to prove that the works exhibited were requested from the artist by invitation and not without his knowledge or through assembling the works from collectors or dealers: "Il faudrait une déclaration du Président d'une, ou de deux des plus anciennes Société artistiques des Salons officiels de Paris, dans laquelle déclaration le dit Président cite aussi l'article du règlement (avec le numéro de l'article), pour que cela soit bien clair que d'après l'article numéro ... du règlement de la Société Nationale des Artistes Français (c'est, je crois, la plus ancienne), les oeuvres exposés sont demandés aux artistes par invitation etc. [...] sûrement il y'a un ou quelques articles (ou paragraphes) d'après lesquels il resulte que le Salon ne peut pas exposer les oeuvres d'un artiste français vivant sans rien lui dire, à son insu, et en allant chercher les oeuvres chez des collectionneurs ou des marchands [...] C'est incroyable combien c'est difficile d'avoir ce que je demande. Il y a quelques années j'ai aussi essayé d'avoir ces documents pour moi tellement nécessaires; mais je n'ai eu que des choses à côté. In English, to the painter Charles Soulier at the Hôtel de l'intendance du domaine extraordinaire in Paris, regretting his being unable to see him on Saturday, being otherwise engaged, and confessing his desire to improve his English skills, also mentioning his collaboration with the writer Horace Raisson and the painter Pierre-Narcisse Guérin: "I am very displeased to cannot to go Saturday to pass the night in your pleasant company: for I have promised another person to see her that day; it is not, as you shall imagine and Mester Horace also, without a great discontent; but I hope it will not be the last time, we shall have the opportunity of coming together. I thank you at your Italian-English-french and grateful letter: I conjure you to excuse my bad english language. I dare, a little time past, with your obligeant lessons, I will better speak and write in that fair tongue, in which I am so desiderous to be readily instructed. Should Mester Raisson, have the complaisance to go on Saturday in the morning at M. Guérin's house, or Sunday at my own, likewise in the morning, we could together so resolve, in what day we can to begin our undertaking of colorage, which I wish to see quickly terminated. Your sincere friend and thankful disciple [...]". - Soulier met Delacroix in 1816 through their friend Horace Raisson. To the writer Achille Piron at Hôtel des Postes in Paris, enjoying the good weather in Saint-Cyr, where he plans to stay for a few days to relax after a period of intensive work, likely referring to the painting "The Barque of Dante", and regretting his being unable to join Piron's riding party on Wednesday, as he wants to rest and suffers from a large scab on his buttocks, making it difficult for him to sit, hoping to make up for it on another day with good weather, a healthy bottom and enough money: "Le temps qui est beau me sollicite pour y rester quelques jours que je ne crois pas inutiles à ma santé après le travail auquel je me suis livré. C'est un des motifs qui me confirme quoiqu'à mon grand regret dans l'impossibilité de partager mercredi votre bonne partie de cheval dont je me promettais beaucoup de plaisir. Il y a encore un autre motif qui n'est pas sans influencer ma détermination. Ma fesse droite est hypothéquée par une croûte épaisse et noire et saillante qui me rend fort difficile de m'assoir; surtout sur les selles de Mr Dominique. L'année n'aura pas j'espère perdu encore tous ses beaux jours et ma croûte ne durera pas éternellement. To the painter Charles Soulier at the Duke of Noaille's home in Maintenon, glad that he found the metope he was looking for and that he is working hard. He mentions a letter by the painter Thales Fielding, which he did not take the time fully to understand and which his friend Jean-Baptiste Pierret mailed to Soulier, asking him to write to Fielding at once to inquire about his wishes, supposing he would like to return a watercolour via the publisher Ostervald. He concludes with asking him to return soon, as he is bored on his own: "Je suis bien content que tu aies retrouvé la métope, mon cher et bon, et aussi que tu travailles beaucoup. Pierret a pris soin de te renvoyer ce que tu lui demandais et en même temps un morceau de lettre de Fielding pour toi, que je n'ai pas pris le temps de comprendre. A collector's note in pencil dates the letter to 1839/40.

To Louis François Sosthènes, vicomte de La Rochefoucauld, directeur des beaux-arts, reminding him of a request for an appointment from a few days earlier: "J'ai eu l'honneur de vous écrire il y a quelques jours pour solliciter un rendez vous après avoir été assez malheureuse pour ne pas vous rencontrer lorsque vous m'en aviez assigné un précédemment. Je prends la liberté de vous le rappeller [!] et vous prie d'agréer les assurances de la haute considération, avec laquelle j'ai l'honneur d'être [...]". - Trivial though this beautiful letter may seem, it is highly indicative of Délacroix's poor relationship with the ultraroyalist vicomte. As "directeur général des beaux-arts" to King Charles X between 1824 and 1830, de La Rochefoucauld wielded enormous influence over French artists. In 1825, Délacroix's monumental "Massacre at Chios" had been acquired for the Musée du Luxembourg, following its exhibition in 1824. This controversial purchase was made by Auguste de Forbin, director of the Louvre, without de La Rochefoucauld's approval. No further acquistions of Délacroix's works by the French state would follow during de La Rochefoucauld's directorate, and in 1828 he affronted Délacroix by suggesting he change his painting of "The Death of Sardanapalus", on display at the Salon, so that it might be acquired by the French state. Délacroix categorically opposed this interference, a possible topic of discussion in the appointment he sought from de La Rochefoucauld in this letter. The letter can be dated by Délacroix's address, as he resided in 15 Rue de Choiseul only in 1828. - Traces of folds and insignificant browning to the margins. Mit zus. 8 Aquarellen, Gouachen und Federzeichnungen (diese teilweise laviert), 4 Bordüren in aquarellierter Federzeichnung und ein montierter kolorierter Kupferstich. Ein Eintrag in Bleistift. Goldgepr. Lederband der Zeit mit Goldschnitt, goldgepr. Deckelmonogramm "G. E. F.", mit goldgepr. Rücken und die Einbanddeckel mit goldgepr. floralen Bordüren. Studentisches Album mit Einträgen aus Ost- und Westpreußen, dessen Einträger sich als Studenten der Chemie, Chirurgie, Pharmazie oder Theologie ausweisen und einige Widmungen in lateinischer Sprache verfassten. Neben Einträgen einiger Mitglieder der Familie Fahrenholtz finden sich Namen wie von Dziengel, Gerlach, Osterroht, Reuther, Thumsener, Thiele, von Treschen u. a. m. Die ersten drei Einträge führen in Federkalligraphie Bibelzitate an, jeweils umrahmt von figürlichen Bordüren in aquarellierter Federzeichnung; der erster ist mit dem Namen des Albumeigners versehen. - Gottfried Ernst Fahrenholtz scheint sein Stammbuch zu Beginn seines Theologiestudiums angelegt zu haben, da in einem späteren Beitrag neckisch als Thema dessen Berufswahl des Geistlichen aufgriffen wird: "Schöne Mädchen sind geschaffen, / Für Juristen nicht für Pfaffen [...]" (17. I. 1793). Unter den Beiträgen sticht ein mit dem hübschem Rundbild einer Stadtansicht illustriertes Gedicht hervor: "Der Thürme hohes Haupt ist Nachbahr von den Blitzen, / Und wer nach Cronen ringt, bleibt oft im Staube sitzen, / Man wünsche nicht zu sehr der Hoheit Überfluß / Weil dies, was alzu hoch steigt, auch hoch fallen muß [...]" (17. VI. 1762). Weitere Illustrationen zeigen die Personifizierung der Gerechtigkeit, ein Banner mit der Inschrift "Suum Cuique" haltend, die ovale Komposition einer Naturszene mit Bacchus, Cupido und der unter einem Rosenstrauch schlafenden Venus, außerdem eine Ansicht von Dirschau (heute Tczew) an der Weichsel, ein goldener Kelch als "Denkmahl der Freundschaft" und ein Liebespaar in einem Park. [Album amicorum - Pomerania].
Friendship album of Caroline von Pirch from Gluschen (Gluszyno). Bischofswerder, Bromberg, Bütow, Danzig, Dumröse, Elbing, Gluschen, Grumbkow, Lippehne, Stargard Stolp, and other places, 1786-1816, with a few later entries from 1832, 1893 and 1896.
Oblong 8vo (ca. 215 x 120 mm). 246 pp. with 120 pp. of entries, occasionally two entries on a single page. With ca. 25 illustrations (of which 15 watercolour drawings, 4 embroideries, 6 silhouette portraits, 1 mounted copperplate size 145 x 85 mm). Contemporary sheepskin, front cover with gilt initials "C.v.P.", gilt floral borders to both covers, gilt spine on four raised bands. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. A fine friendship album compiled in the late 18th and early 19th century by a lady from the Pomeranian gentry, containing entries by numerous members of the Pomeranian and Prussian nobility. - Many contributors are from Caroline's immediate family, including the jurist Ewald Georg von Pirch. Others include the families v. Böhn, v. Brünneck, v. Keszkowsky, v. Knobloch, v. Lindenovsky, v. Mach, v. Manstein, v. Massow, v. Münchow, v. Unruh, v. Schlieben, and v. Zitzewitz, as well as Carl Ludwig v. Böse, Friederike von Coubiere, and Johann Karl Joseph von Schon. Most contributions are in German, others in French, one praising the owner's wisdom: "La Sagesse tient lien de tout / On ne voit point chez toi l'eclat, et la Richesse / et qui l'avare croit devoir tout immoler [...]" (15 May 1786). An emotional entry by Caroline's niece Ernestine von Grabowska compares their friendship to the immortality of the soul: "Deine Verehrung ist so unsterblich wie meine Seele, / Und meine besten Wünsche für Ihr Wohl, so gewiss / als die Dauer, der Freundschafltichsten Ergebenheit [...]" (13 April 1806). Occasionally, later entries are added to earlier ones, with notes relating to a dear deceased friend or family member there memorialised. - The album is illustrated with a wealth of floral watercolour borders and details of various sizes, including a trompe-l’oeil watercolour of sheet music and other papers, the drawing of an old tree, another of a lady mourning at a grave, and several more with painted and monogrammed memorial plates which give evidence of the artistic skills of Caroline's well-wishers. Two dried flowers are sewed onto the page. An engraving captioned, "Mir wird geleistet werden, was mir verheißen ist [...]" shows a female figure with winged temples, sitting in an arbour underneath signs of the zodiac (by C. Frosch after Schnorr v. Carolsfeld, apparently removed from C. Sintenis's "Das Buch für's Herz auf's ganze Jahr", Leipzig 1806). Bound at the front is an entry with embroidered text and illustration on silk, dated 1811; another text entry (by Sophie v. Schlieben, 1800) is entirely embroidered. - As shown by the first entry following the front flyleaf, the album was subsequently owned by another member of the family, also named Caroline von Pirch, from Schidlitz (now Siedlce) near Danzig: there, she states that she received the album on 12 August 1832 as a gift from her good friend, the wife of the district administrator Eduard von Zychlinski (1795-1858). An even later entry, from 1893, reveals that the album was later owned by Agnes v. Mach, another descendant of the family. - Binding somewhat rubbed, edges slightly wornm sewing slightly loosened in places, one leaf loose. Pages show light soiling, thumbing, and traces of old handling, but overall in good condition.

The draft is addressed to the French inventor Édouard Belin, accepting an invitation: "C'est avec la plus grande joie que j'ai l'occasion de visiter les merveilleuses inventions de Mr Bellin". - In the letter card, Carol thanks the recipient for condolences on the death of his father King Ferdinand I of Romania on 20 July 1927: "Bien qu'un peu tardivement, a cause du grand malheur qui m'a frappé, mais pas moins sincèrement je vous remercie pour les condoléances que vous m'avez envoyés". - Carol lived in exile in Paris from 1926 to 1930 due to his morganatic marriage to Magda Lupescu and his subsequent exclusion from the line of succession. Upon King Ferdinand's death, Carol's son Michael acceded to the throne at the age of five in a regency headed by Carol's younger brother Prince Nicolae. The regency was overthrown in 1930 and Carol was offered the crown of Romania. He ruled until 1940, when he was ousted by Marshal Ion Antonescu and succeeded by his son Michael. - Together with a portrait postcard depicting Carol II with an inscription to Belin by a Romanian captain (Paris, 22 Dec. 1927). - The telegram draft shows ink damage affecting the text and signature. He suggests a system of elementary and superior courses, alternating yearly, observing that this would be a suitable way to reform the training programme without having to address the Reichstag first: "J'ai l'honneur de vous faire savoir que le Conseil fédéral de la guerre entrant dans vos vues sur le développement à donner à l'instruction de la première Division, désire qu'il soit fait cette année un essai de second Cours profeté et à cet effet, il n'envoye à l'Ecole de Thun que des officiers qui doivent avoir les connaissances nécessaires. Ce sont Messieurs Fornaro Capit[aine] [...] Pourtales Gorgier Lieutenant et Naville S[ou]s Lieutenant. [Englisches und dänisches Königshaus].
Gästebuchblatt mit 11 Eintragungen und eigenh. Unterschriften. O. O., 1893-1895.
1 S. 4to. Mit gedr. Spalten "Date", "Name" und "Address". Seltenes, illustres Blatt, herausgelöst aus einem Gästebuch, signiert von Mitgliedern der englischen und dänischen Königshäuser. Der früheste Eintrag lautet auf König Edward VII. von England (1841-1910) und seine Gemahlin Alexandra von Dänemark (1844-1925) mit ihren bereits erwachsenen Kindern George V. (1865-1936) und Victoria Mary (1868-1935) und erfolgte am 25. VII. 1893. Als Adresse vermerkt Edward die Londoner Stadtvilla "Marlborough House". Alexandra fügt den herrschaftlichen Landsitz "Sandringham" in der Grafschaft Norfolk hinzu, der sich zu einem sozialen Mittelpunkt der britischen High Society entwickelte und wo auch amerikanische Millionäre willkommen waren. - Die zweite Besuchergruppe bestand aus König Christian IX. von Dänemark (1818-1906), seiner Gemahlin Louise (1817-98) und ihrem Sohn Prinz Waldemar (1858-1939) mit Wohnsitz in "Copenhagen" und wird ins Jahr 1893 datiert. Hinzu kommen am 9. XII. 1983 die Witwe des 1884 verstorbenen Herzogs von Albany Leopold und vierte Tochter von Queen Victoria, Helene zu Waldeck (1861-1922), sowie am 13. IX. 1895 ihre beiden einzigen Kinder Alice d'Albany (1883-1981) und Charles Edouard (1884-1954), als Wohnort ist jeweils "Clarmont" angeführt. Elisabeth zu Waldeck und Pyrmont (1873-1961), Gemahlin des Prinzen Alexander von Erbach-Schönberg und Helenes Schwester, wohnhaft in "Arolsen", verewigte sich als abschließender Seiteneintrag, am 13. IX. 1895. - George V. hatte kurz zuvor im selben Monat Maria von Teck geehelicht. Prinzessin Victoria Mary blieb zwar zeitlebens unverehelicht und ihrer Mutter und ihrem Bruder eng verbunden, dennoch könnte dieses Dokument womöglich erste Gespräche zur Anbahnung einer ehelichen Verbindung der Königshäuser belegen, da wenige Jahre später ihre Schwester Prinzessin Maud, die jüngste Tochter Eduards VII., und Haakon VII., ein Enkel Christians IX., verheiratet werden sollten. Alice d'Albany ging 1904 mit Maria von Tecks Bruder, Prinz Alexander, die Ehe ein. - Etwas finger- und braunfleckig.

Fr. Pr., dass Ihr mir von Ihnen bereits angekündigter Rücktritt zur Chefsache geworden ist. So sehr ich letzteres auch bedauere, da ich jedem Manne von altem Schrott [!] und Korn nachweinen möchte, so lebhaft freut mich die Auszeichnung, deren Sie teilhaft geworden sind. Sie können, auch bei einem, wie ich vermuthe, geringen Sinne für äußerlichen Aufputz die [...] Anerkennung mit Genugthuung begrüßen, da Sie sie in langen Jahren mühevoller Dienstleistung vollauf verdient haben. Gallieni, Joseph, French general (1849-1916).

Calling card format. 1½ pp. To the inventor Édouard Belin, promising to forward a letter, possibly to the military governor of Paris: "Certainem[en]t, mon cher Monsieur Belin, vous pourrez rendre les Etat-Major jovial. Meilleurs [...] et je m'empresse de transmettre votre lettre au Gouv. [?] de Paris, en disant qui vous étes et ce que vous voulez". - Only a few weeks after Gallieni wrote this message, he was reactivated from retirement and was made military governor of Paris. In this function he organized the defense of Paris and contributed to the French victory in the First Battle of the Marne in September 1914. To send reinforcements to the Marne front, Gallieni famously requisitioned all Parisian cabs, although the majority of the troops was moved by train. From 29 October 1915 Gallieni served as Minister of War in the cabinet of Aristide Briand. His dismissal from the government in March 1916 was provoked by his public criticism of the performance of general Joseph Joffre at the Battle of Verdun. - With traces of former mounting. To a general with congratulations for his commission as division commander, advising him to check whether all necessary supplies are provided in sufficient amounts, including books, maps and forms, mentioning the battles of Lauter and Sarre, of whose course he is not entirely certain, as well as his increasing weariness of service, and his wish to take the waters at Eaux de Heustrich or Eaux d'Allevard, concluding with a note on his recent struggle to finish a book, a copy of which he mailed to the princes of Orléans: "Toutes mes félicitations de votre rentrée en ligne. Cette fois elle paraît bien officielle puisque je lis dans les journaux que vous venez d'être assermenté comme divisionnaire de la III […] J'en suis fort charmé pour cette belle division [...] Si j'osais me permettre de vous donner un petit avis, basé sur mes dernières expériences, ce serait celui de faire venir d'avance votre caisse-bureau reglementaire [...] de division et celles des brigades et de vérifier si tout ce qu'il vous faut y est bien, livres, cartes, forumulaires surtout [...] Je ne suis pas [...] parfaitement au clair sur les batailles de la Lauter et la Sarre [...] Je commence à être très fatigué de mon service, qui […] est un gros écart de regime. The Emperor lifts duties and tolls illegally introduced during the Thirty Years' War, aiming to "galvanise trade into its former prosperity": "Wir [sind] durch Unsern [...] Reichs Convent Gevollmächtigten Kayserlichen Principal Commissarium dem hochwürdig Guidobaldum Ertzbischofen zu Salzburg [...] underthänigst ersucht worden, daß wir allergnädigste Verordnung zu thun geruheten, damit die [...] hin und wider im Reich ermelte Commercien und gemeinen Nuzen zu Nachtheil mit gelegenheith des Kriegs wider die Rechten, Freyheit, und ohne Bewilligung eines Römischen Kaysers und der Churfürsten newerlich aigenes gewaltes eingeführte und erhöherte Zöll, Mauthen, auch alle andere ungewöhnliche Auflagen, beschwerten und Hindernussen, wie die auch nahmen haben mögen, durch welche die Treibung mehrgedachter Commercien und der Schifffarth deteriorirt worden, gänzlich aufgehöbt, abgethan, cassirt und respective reducirt und solchem nach denen Landtschaften, anländung und allen Strömen Ihre vorige Sicherheit, Jurisdiction und Gebrauch, wie dieselbe vor dem lezten Teutschen Krieg viel iahr zuvor gewest, wiederumb gegeben [...]". - Several similar mandates (though not this very one) are quoted by the jurist Franz von Schrötter in his "Patriotische Bemerkungen" (1770). - Counter-signed by the civil servant Wilhelm Schröder and by the cleric Wilderich Baron Walderdorff (1617-80, later bishop of Vienna). [Monighetti, Ippolit, Russian artist and architect (1819-1878)]. - Album amicorum.
Friendship album for Princess Elizabeth of Prussia. Baden, Bad Kissingen, Darmstadt, Hohenschwangau, Homburg, Karlsruhe, Munich, Osborne House, Peterhof, St Petersburg, Wiesbaden and other places, 1855-1880.
4to (259 x 182 mm). 4 vols. Altogether 369 ff. with 145 entries. With 13 full-page gouaches and ornamental frames on each leaf, all heightend in gold. Contemporary red velvet with gilt-stamped spines and moiré silk endpapers. All edges gilt. Stored in custom-made slipcase. Exceedingly prestigious and luxurious friendship album with the signatures of Alexander II and Alexander III of Russia, the German Emperor Wilhelm I, Queen Victoria, seven kings including Frederick William IV of Prussia, Ludwig I, Maximilian II, and Ludwig II of Bavaria, five empresses including Alexandra Feodorovna, Maria Alexandrovna, and Elizabeth of Austria, seven queens consort, and several ruling princes. - The album is beautifully illuminated by the eminent Russian architect and designer Ippolit Monighetti, who was also responsible for the sumptuous book decorations of the famous imperial coronation album of Alexander II and Maria Alexandrovna published in 1856. It is organized as a calendar, each volume comprising three months and each month being represented by a title gouache with biblical quotes and illustrations and one decorated page for each day. An additional title gouache in the first volume shows the calendar year 1855 and the arms of the Grand Duchy of Hesse, as Elisabeth of Prussia (1815-85) was by marriage a Princess of Hesse and by Rhine. The Hessian Lion reappears in the illustration for November, whereas the illustration for June includes a beautiful veduta of St Petersburg. Monighetti signed the title gouache as well as those for January and February; the latter is additionally dated to 1853, which indicates the time and effort invested in this exceptional work of art. - The 145 entries - mostly from members of the aristocracy, of which 131 could be identified - are unrelated to the calendar. The final entry was written by Empress Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. - Ippolit Monighetti studied design at the Stroganov Art School in Moscow and later architecture at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St Petersburg. He started his career as an architect with several villas for the Russian nobility in Tsarkoye Selo (Pushkin). These early successes led to his discovery by Emperor Nicholas I, who commissioned Monighetti with the design of the Turkish Bath in Catherine Park in 1850. Many prestigious commissions followed, both for architecture and design, by members of the Romanov family including Emperor Alexander II. The commission of the friendship album for Elizabeth of Prussia was certainly facilitated by Elizabeth's close family ties to the Russian imperial family: Empress Alexandra Feodorovna was Elizabeth's cousin, whereas Alexandra's daughter-in-law Empress Maria Alexandrovna, who left three entries in the album, was a sister of Elizabeth's husband Prince Charles of Hesse and by Rhine. Although it is the only book known to have been illuminated by Monighetti, the intricate ornaments closely resemble his book decorations for the lithographed coronation album of Alexander II and Maria Alexandrovna. Thus, the friendship album of Princess Elizabeth of Prussia is not only unique in the scope of its signatories but also closely connected to one of the most famous illustrated books of the 19th century. - Insignificant chafing to the title illustration for October. Overall very well preserved. Provenance: removed from the library of the Barons de Bassus at Schloss Sandersdorf.

4to. 2 pp. Autograph copy of his letter to the Swiss students' societies Zofingue and Paedagogia, whom he mails a gift as a memento of the September banquet he recently attended, thanking them for their hospitality. Munier recalls a solemn toast to Switzerland proposed during the party, and gives another toast to the academic youth of Geneva and all of Switzerland, encouraging them to be eager to serve their country and ready to defend it on the battlefield. He concludes with the promise to renew this toast continuously until the end of his career, and later to take it to his grave: "Vous ne refuserez pas au Recteur de l'Académie le plaisir de fixer, au milieu de vous, par un signe durable le souvenir de nos Fêtes à Septembre. Acceptez le, comme un faible gage de ma gratitude pour l'accueil sympathique et presque filial que je reçus de vous au banquet de la Brassérie. Veuillez le garder long-tem[p]s en témoignage de notre sainte émotion, a l'heure où, la tête découverte, avec le pays entier debout comme nous nous porterons le toast à la Suisse, notre patrie bien-aimée [...] Et je voudrais aussi qu'alors l'un de vous et de vos successeurs s'en servit pour porter, en mon nom, un autre toast à la jeunesse Académique de Genève et de la Suisse entière! aux jeunes travailleurs de la pensée! Curious letter addressed to the Chancellor of Austria, probably Rudolf Ramek, expressing his joy over a "new link" forged between the Republic of Austria and the French Republic by "the invention of Mr Belin". - Édouard Belin (1876-1933), who had studied photography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, is today best known as the inventor of the Bélinograph, an ancestor of the fax machine. Painlevé's message either refers to the Bélinograph or to Belin's brand of teleprinters that had been successfully established in 1925, although Belin was not the inventor of this technology. It is very likely that the letter was written during Painlevé's brief second term as Prime Minister of the French Republic (17 April - 22 November 1925). His Austrian homologue at the time was the conservative politician Rudolf Ramek. - Insignificant smudging.

Legal documents of the Pazzini family. Castel Corno, Isera, Rovereto, and other places, 1667-1717.
Small folio (ca. 230 x 315 mm). Italian, Latin, and German manuscript on paper. Ca. (254) pp. Sewn in contemporary carta rustica binding. An interesting collection of legal documents, compiled c. 1720, that sheds light on the legal bearings of an Italian family of the lesser nobility from Isera near Rovereto during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The mostly notarized copies of over 60 legal proceedings and some original documents comprise financial records of a parish, last wills of relatives, various kinds contracts, and court documents.The most prominent co-contractor of the Pazzini is count Paris Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn (d. after 1693), lord of Castel Corno near Isera. A contract with an otherwise unknown Moritz Ritter von Faboc zu Altessen is written in German, highlighting the proximity of the German and Italian speaking worlds in the Trentino region. The documents were issued by notaries in Isera, Rovereto, and surrounding villages. - Spine broken; some leaves brittle or loose. Occasional water damage, stains, and fading. Minor tears are frequent but rarely affect the text. Generally well preserved.
