Congratulating a "Radio Club" with an aphorism on the perils of French pacifism and the justified demands of France, probably in the wake of the Allied victory in World War I: "La France est sincèrement pacifique, mais elle n'entend pas que la paix tourne à la confusion des vainqueurs. Elle ne demande que son dû, mais dans l'intérêt même de la justice. Elle est resolue à ne rien céder de ses droits [...]". - During the negotiations for the Treaty of Versailles, president Poincaré was among the hardliners, especially concerning the future of the Rhineland. Poincaré considered his resignation, as he did not fully support the final terms of the treaty negiotiated by his prime minister Georges Clemenceau. - Signature and parts of the text slightly faded. J'espère que vous pouvez vous les procurer et qu'ils vous interessent. Pourriez-vous m'envoir l'adresse de Monsieur Lo Duca? [...]". - A few small tears to margins. To the French inventor Édouard Belin, expressing his satisfaction with and gratitude for the first radiotelegraphic transmission to bear a message to Pope Pius XI, broadcast by the newly-founded Vatican Radio on the occasion of the Paris Colonial Exhibition in 1931: "Le cardinal archevêque de Paris est profondément ému à la pensée que le premier document reproduit à la station Radio de la Cité du Vatican, pour l'inauguration des appareils radiotélégraphiques Belin, apporte au Pape des missions et de la Paix, avec son filial respect, un témoignage de la fraternité en notre seigneur Jésus Christ et de l'espérance dans le progrès de notre Foi qui amènent des millions des visiteurs à ce Pavillon des missions catoliques, où vibre l'âme généreuse de notre belle Exposition coloniale". - The Vatican Radio had been set up by Guglielmo Marconi and was inaugurated with the live broadcast of a call to prayer by Pope Pius XI on 12 February 1931. Édouard Belin (1876-1963) is the inventor of the Bélinograph, the first photograph transmission system. He successfully marketed his own teleprinter technology, which was apparently used in the Vatican. - Minimally creased due to the mounting.

Oblong 8vo. 1 p. Mounted on paper (oblong 4to). In Arabic. Yusef ben Hassan participated in the inauguration of the Grande Mosque of Paris alongside the French president Gaston Doumergue in 1926. He travelled to France with Théodore Steeg, the French first resident general of French Morocco, on the battleship "Paris", that had been employed in the Rif War (1921-26), fought between a coalition of Spanish and French colonial forces and Berber tribes of the Moroccan Rif mountains. - On stationery with printed letterhead of the "Cuirasse 'Paris'". With a rectangular strip clipped from the lower right corner (no text loss) and very lightly stained.

Deutsche Handschrift auf Papier. 95 Bll. mit 38 Einträgen. Mit 4 ganzseitigen Bleistiftzeichnungen, 1 gouachierten und lavierten Federzeichnung, 2 Vignetten in Blei sowie einer Notenzeile. Schweinslederkassette der Zeit mit blindgepr. Deckelbordüre und Supralibros aus Messing mit gekröntem Monogramm "RO" auf dunkelgrünem Samt und Eckbeschlägen. Die Bll. mit Goldschnitt, teils farbig. Charmantes Freundschaftsalbum des Wiener Juristen Rudolf Speil von Ostheim (geb. 1868), der anhand des Beitrags seines gleichnamigen Cousins vom 23. Jänner 1884 identifiziert werden kann. Das Album wurde noch zu Ostheims Schulzeit, wohl am Wiener Theresianum, angelegt. Der bekannteste Einträger ist der spätere Kirchenrechtsprofessor Max Hussarek von Heinlein (1865-1935), der von 1911 bis 1917 als Unterrichtsminister in drei Kabinetten diente und von Juli bis Oktober 1918 als vorletzter Ministerpräsident Kaiser Karls I. fungierte. Ein weiterer Schüler des Theresianums war der Jurist und Professor der Universität Wien Alfred Rt. von Wretschko (1869-1941), der seinen Beitrag von Mai 1883 um eine ganzseitige Ansicht von Schloss Maria-Loretto am Wörthersee in Blei bereicherte. Ebenfalls hervorzuheben ist der schöne, mit Bleistiftzeichnung verzierte Beitrag des polnisch-österreichischen Chemikers und Alpinisten Tadeusz Smoluchowski (1868-1936), älterer Bruder des bedeutenden Physikers Marian Smoluchowski. Beide Brüder waren begeisterte Bergsteiger, die gemeinsam 16 Erstbesteigungen und 24 neue Routen verzeichnen können. Rudolf Speil von Ostheim dürfte selbst als Bergsteiger aktiv gewesen sein, denn der späteste Beitrag, gezeichnet "Victor", ist ein dem "Genossen der Venedigerpartie zur freundlichen Erinnerung an den August 1888" gewidmetes Musikzitat. - Unter den weiteren Einträgern finden sich zahlreiche Verwandte von Ostheims, darunter seine Geschwister und sein Vater und die Cousinen Mitzi, Clementine und Johanna Schirnhofer, die je eine ganzseitige Bleistiftzeichnung anfertigten, wovon eine schöne Ansicht des Altausseer Sees hervorzuheben ist. Der bereits erwähnte Beitrag des gleichnamigen Cousins ist besonders aufwendig mit kalligraphierten Zitaten Schillers und Goethes sowie einem lavierten Doppelportrait der beiden Dichter in gouachiertem Lorbeerrahmen gestaltet. Ebenfalls Schiller zitiert Charlotte Reithoffer, Schwiegertochter des österreichischen Unternehmers Johann Nepomuk Reithoffer (1781-1872), aus dessen Gummi- und Guttaperchawarenfabrik in Wimpassing 1912 die Firma Semperit hervorging. Unter den vielen weiteren weiblichen Einträgerinnen ist ein Mitglied des alten deutschen Adelsgeschlechts von Schieben, aber auch eine "lustige Ella aus Berlin", die sich mit einem längeren Gedicht am 15. August 1885 in Bad Vöslau verewigte. - Vereinzelte Blätter minimal angeschmutzt. Die Bleistiftzeichnungen durch Transparentpapier geschützt.

Pour commencer une collection ça me parait plus 'grand public' et facile à faire etant donné mes collections et celles de 2 ou 3 personnes de mes amis. A envisager aussi: 'Les plus belles images de la bande dessinée'. Pas une anthologie d'episodes ou de planches, mais des images détachées. Separées de l'ensemble, elles sont encore plus chic. To an unnamed recipient, affirming her interest in proposed projects, although they may be "too vast", and offering to make her plans known in Bucharest: "J'ai lu avec intérêt l'exposé des projets vastes, trop vastes peut-être, mais très intéressante que vous avez bien voulu me faire connaître. Il est certain que leur réalisation serait précieuse au désir de nos Étudiants de se tenir en contact avec tous les événements civilisées et civilisateurs des pays auxquels les attachent leurs traditions et leurs amitiés. Je serai donc prête à signaler à Bucarest votre effort, lorsque vous m'aurez donné les possibilités et les noms auxquels s'appuierait votre projet". - After Elena Vacaresco's romantic relationship with the Romanian prince and later king Ferdinand I of Romania, she went into exile in France in 1889. Vacaresco had a prestigious salon in Paris, was twice laureate of the Académie française, member of the Romanian Academy, and, from 1925 to 1926, permanent Romanian delegate to the League of Nations. She is the only woman in the history of the League of Nations to have served with the rank of ambassador. - Traces of folds.

Adam expresses his gratitude and excitement, since the cantata was supposed to be performed by the tenor Gilbert Duprez in the presence of the French King, probably Louis-Philippe. As he expects to be introduced to the King, he inquires after the proper formal attire: "Je doute que la lettre puisse vous arriver avant midi, mais la votre m'est venue trop tard pour que j'aie pu y répondre plutôt. Je soutiens [?] un bal projetté [!] avec d'autant plus d'empressement que je suis chargé de composer une cantate pour y être chanté par Duprez devant le Roi. Je me réjouis fort que l'honneur que l'on m'en fait de me choisir régullier [?] sur la 4me Légion à la quelle je suis fier d'appartenir. Comme il est probable que je serai présenté au Roi, veuillez bien me dire quel est le costume rigoureux. Est-ce le pantalon blanc et les bottes ou bien la culotte courte et les bas de soie? en tout cas le chapeau à cornes est de rigueur, je pense". - Somewhat creased and minimally stained. Ravina, Jean-Henri, French pianist and composer (1818-1909).

Culhat de Coreil. - Jean-Henri Ravina was born into a family of musicians and had his first public appearance at the age of 8. He studied at the musical school of Charles-Valentin Alkan's father and later entered the piano class of Pierre-Joseph-Guillaume Zimmermann at the Paris Conservatory. At 17 years of age he became assistant to a professor at the Conservatory. Ravina resigned two years later in order to pursue his career as a virtuoso pianist. His tours of France, Spain, and Russia were highly acclaimed, and his compositions proved immensely popular. - Trimmed along the lower margin, slightly affecting the signature. With traces of folds, minor tears, some foxing and browning. Traces of former mounting and collector's notes on verso.

Intimate letter to Cécile Marianne Dollfus, wife of the journalist Armand Bertin, inquiring after the well-being of her husband and describing a disastrous visit of president Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, the later Emperor Napoleon III, to Mulhouse. Reber had recently returned to live with his family in Mulhouse, leading a "very monotonous life" and working "as much as he can". He confides a lack of self-confidence with respect to his work that has "crept over" him "for some time" and that he still experiences when he imagines that the audience rejects his music. He then discusses the president, who (he says with ironic understatement) had been "moderately satisfied with the reception he received" in Mulhouse. Apart from the "hostile disposition" of a part of the population, there was also "gaucheness" committed by those who "had the best intentions". In an almost comical manner, Reber describes how the national guard arrived too late and played the Marseillaise, at the time considered an oppositional hymn, and that a speech by an industrialist, who believed "to be making the most flattering compliments", was "full of impertinences". As a result, the "unfortunate president was so unhappy with his reception that he departed earlier", cancelling visits to industrial establishments. In turn, the industrialists, including a mutual friend "who expected to be decorated", were furious at the president. In closing, Reber mentions that he has started to read Armand Bertin's "Journal des débats", not so much for an "interest in political affairs" but in order to "find a reflection of something" that reminds him of his friends. - Reber returned to Paris sooner than he might had expected, as he was made professor of harmony at the Paris Conservatory in 1851. Wir, wahrhaft Alten, glauben nur an eine Freundschaft unter uns Zeitgenoßen und so will ich mir denn einreden, Sie wären ein 70 jähriges Mütterchen und wir kennten uns schon seit Menschengedenken [...] Eigentlich ist es nie wahr, wen[n] die Menschen glauben, daß man sich von früh an kennen müße, um sich so ganz treu zu bleiben. Truffaut is hesitant to compose anything without further information regarding the project and the possible cooperation of Moreau, who should choose the contributor herself. He emphasizes that he would never write a preface without having first read the book, and mentions that he will be busy filming until 10 January: "Ta lettre du 16 novembre me fait bien plaisir. Elle me parvient en plein tournage d'un nouveau film à Hyères. J'hésite à donner une réponse positive à ta demande d'une préface pour un livre sur Jeanne Moreau car je voudrais en savoir davantage. Tout d'abord, je suppose qu'un tel livre ne se fait pas sans l'accord et la participation de l'actrice elle-même. Si c'est le cas, il me semble qu'elle devrait choisir elle-même le préfacier. De toute manière, je ne fais jamais de préface sans lire d'abord le livre! Enfin, mon tournage m'immobilise jusqu'au 10 janvier 1983, ce qui signifie que je ne peux pas écrire quoi que ce soit d'ici là [...]".

To the inventor Édouard Belin, thanking him for respecting his wish not to reproduce an earlier letter to Belin on election posters for the 1932 French legislative election: "En vous remettant ma lettre du 15 février je vous ai dit que je ne voulais pas la voir afficher sur les panneaux-electoraux mais que naturellement vous pouviez la publier ailleurs. - Vous avez respecté ma volonté et de ce fait, votre probité est hors de cause. - Bien qu'ayant des opinions plus ou moins différentes on a le droit d'estimer un homme et d'en dire les raisons au public appelé à le juger. Je vous redis donc que j'ai la plus grande estime non seulement pour vos remarquables travaux mais aussi pour votre caractère libéral et indépendant de tout esprit sectaire [...]". In a short postscript, d'Arsonval authorizes Belin to publish the letter at hand. Édouard Belin's bid for the Chamber of Deputies ultimately failed. - On stationery of the "Laboratoire de Physique Biologique - Hautes Études". The second leaf bent at the right margin.

Hofkabinett (now the Natural History Museum) in Vienna, thanking him for the final three parts of his "Flora von Südbosnien und der angrenzenden Hercegovina", a series of articles that was published in the Annals of the Natural History Museum in Vienna: "Ella ha avuto la squisita cortesia di mandarmi le iltime tre parti della sua flora della Bosnia del sud e dell’Erzegovina ed io mi affretto a dirle che il suo lavoro mi è riuscito oltremodo gradito [...]". - Baldacci also mentions the Swedish botanist Svante Samuel Murbeck who had published on the flora of southern Bosnia in 1892. Beck's work on the topic was later published in three volumes and translated into Serbo-Croatian and Latin. - Well preserved.

On 5 December 1907 Barrois informs the recipient that he will gladly introduce him as a new member to the Société géologique de France, referring to Bohemia as the second home of Joachim Barrande and to a recent trip to Prague. In the later letter, Barrois thanks the recipient for the bestowal of an honorary doctorate at the University of Prague. Barrois also promises that he will try to attend the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Czech branch of the university: "Je ferai tout mon possible pour assister au 25e anniversaire de la naissance de l'Université tchèque, qui s'est détaché après 5 siècles du vieux tronc universitaire, prouvant par ses 4000 étudiants de sa vitalité et de son avenir, pour le développement de la Bohème et de la science [...]". - On stationery with lithographed letterhead of the university of Lille. With collector's note in pencil. Well preserved.

[...]". Apparently, Beck obliged Dangeard, as the latter thanks him in the second letter for a package and promises to send some brochures in return. - With minor tears and browning.

Krankheitsbedingt hatte Paulitschke von dieser erst verspätet erfahren, und auch seine Arbeiten über die Reise nach Harar würden sich verzögern: "In Folge meiner Bronchitis u. Halsentzündung ans Bett gefesselt gewesen, erfahre ich erst heute von der Dir zu Theil gewordenen Allerhöchsten Auszeichnung [...]". Bezüglich Korrekturen in einem Werk Becks: "Eben erhielt ich die Korrekturen zu Deinem werten Bericht, und sende Dir dieselben sofort unter Kreuzband zu [...] Dein Latein ist ganz ausgezeichnet, darüber herrscht kein Zweifel; nur an zwei Stellen habe ich einen Ciceronianischen Sprachgebrauch dem allgemein-lateinischen vorgezogen u. demgemäß corrigirt [...]". - Mit einigen kleinen Randein- und Randausrissen.
