To his friend, the theatre director Léon Cogniard, asking him to replace two orchestra pit tickets that he had asked for earlier by balcony or gallery tickets, as they were intended for ladies: "C'est par erreur que je t'ai demandé ce matin, 2 orchestre, les places sont pour dames; oblige moi donc de déchirer le 1r billet [...] et le remplacer par 2 galerie ou balcon [...]". - Jules Moinaux is best known today for his librettros for the Offenbach operettas "Pépito" (1853) and "Les Deux Aveugles" (1855). - Traces of folds. C'est vous dire que cela m'a réellement intéressé. Et c'est franchement gai [...]".

I regard it a valuable addition to my arctic library [...]". - Adolphus Greely had led the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition (1881-84), the first U.S. polar expedition, whose purpose was to establish a meteorological observation station as part of the First International Polar Year and to collect astronomical and magnetic data. Soon running into supply difficulties, the project ended in a fiasco. - On headed paper.

However I find it very hard to give you a negative answer if the dog belongs to you and you want to keep it. If this is the case, send your dog to the Institute Pasteur tomorrow and it will be vaccinated during the following three weeks." - An important letter in which Pasteur quotes the law on rabid dogs but shows a softer side when it comes to saving a beloved pet. On his personalized stationery; four punctures at left margin not affecting text.

Es ist erst wenige Monate her, daß ich es in gleicher Weise ablehnen mußte, meine Stimme in einer inner-österreichischen Angelegenheit hören zu lassen. Es wäre eine Selbstüberschätzung, wenn ich die allgemeine Wendung in Ihrem Schreiben, daß Sie auf die Stimme des Adressaten nicht verzichten könnten, auf mich beziehen wollte. So oft ich als Vertreter einer Vereinigung berufener Persönlichkeiten einen Toast auf den Kaiser Franz Joseph I auszubringen hatte, - in Wien oder in Innsbruck oder in Sarajevo, - habe ich die großen Verdienste, die auch für uns Ausländer der greise Herrscher um die heutige Entwicklung unseres Erdtheiles gehabt hat, mit dem Ausdruck tiefer Dankbarkeit hervorgehoben. "Gelassen aber unerschütterlich". - Rudolph Brestel war Professor der Physik in Olmütz und supplierender Professor der Mathematik in Wien, wurde aber nach der Niederschlagung der Revolution von 1848/1849 seiner Ämter enthoben; 1856 war er als Sekretär an der Gründung der Credit-Anstalt für Handel und Gewerbe beteiligt. 1861 wurde er in den nö. Landtag gewählt und wirkte von 1864 bis 1881 als Abgeordneter zum österreichischen Reichsrat. Von 1867 bis zu seinem Rücktritt 1870 war Brestel Finanzminister im sogenannten Bürgerministerium, dessen erster Ministerpräsident Auersperg war. - Mit zwei kleinen Stecknadeldurchstichen.

To a fellow diplomat and friend, bidding him farewell and expressing his hope for a swift return: "Rien ne me console de votre départ que la promesse que vous me faites de votre prompt retour. Recevez je vous supplie tous mes vœux pour le bonheur de votre voyage et faites-moi la justice de croire qu'il est impossible de rien ajouter à l'attachement infini avec lequel j'ai l'honneur d'être [...]". The recipient was probably leaving Copenhague for Stockholm, as Bernstorff included a letter for Carl Fredrik Scheffer and sent greetings to a Count of Esteblodt, as specified in a short postscript: "Aussi je vous supplie de faire tenir à S.E. le Baron de Scheffer l’incluse, et d’assurer de mes respects S. E. Mr. le C. d’Esteblodt en cas qu'il me fit l'honneur de se rappeler mon souvenir". - Count Bernstorff undoubtedly met Scheffer as his Swedish counterpart during his time as Danish ambassador in Paris (1744-50). In 1751, King Frederick V made Bernstorff his foreign minister, a position he retained until 1770. His biggest political success was the protection of Danish neutrality during the Seven Years' War (1756-63). - Carl Fredrik Scheffer (1715-86) had been Swedish ambassador in Paris from 1743 to 1746. After his return to Stockholm, he served as chancellor and financial advisor to the Swedish Kings. His most important position, however, was as preceptor to the future King Gustav III from 1756. - Traces of folds. Well preserved.

Empfehlungsschreiben an den Kaufmann, Bankier und württembergischen Konsul in Rom Karl von Kolb für den Berliner Maler Wilhelm Wider: "Derselbe wird sich einige Zeit in Rom aufhalten und wünscht Ihre Bekanntschaft zu machen. Sie werden hochverehrter Herr in ihm auf alle Fälle einen neuen Verehrer gewinnen [...] Es ist schon sehr lange, daß ich auf directem Wege nicht das Vergnügen hatte, Neuigkeiten von Ihnen zu erfahren; alle hiesigen Bekannten von den allerhöchsten bis zu den niedrigsten gedenken Ihrer auf's Freundlichste [...]". - Das Adressblatt auf stümperhafte Art mit Trägerpapier verklebt, die Adresse daher nicht lesbar; dort auch einige kleinere Folgeschäden.

To a journalist at Le Figaro, reporting on the slow progress of writing the libretto for Massenet's opera "Manon" and asking his friend to publish a note by the fellow journalist Louis Ganderax: "Manon connait le dénouement qui l'attend et voilà pour qui sans doute elle n'avance qu'avec une certaine lenteur. Enfin l'important c'est qu'elle marche bien, ce n'est pas qu'elle marche vite. Ganderax (de la revue des 2 mondes) me demande si mon influence sur vous ira jusqu'à faire passer gratis et le plus tôt possible au Figaro la petite note ci jointe. Si vous le faites nous vous en aurons tous le deux la plus vive reconnaissance. Si c'est impossible ayez la bonté de me renvoyer la note". - Manon successfully premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on 19 January 1884 and remains Massenet's most popular opera. The libretto was co-authored by Henri Meilhac and Philippe Gille. The young Louis Ganderax (1855-1940) was Meilhac's co-editor for for literature at the "Revue de Paris". - Minimally stained.

Ackté, Aino, Finnish soprano (1876-1944).

Small 8vo. 3½ pp. on bifolium. To a domestic worker, giving instructions to prepare the house for a visit of her mother, the mezzo-soprano Emmy Achté, and informing her that a second person woould not accompany her mother to Paris after all: "Madame, je regrette infiniment d’être obligée de vous donner contre-ordre pour la location des chambres, ma mère pouvant trouver logis dans la maison que nous habitons et la dame, qui devait l'accompagner, ne venant pas du tout à Paris. Ce sera peut-être pour une autre fait!". - Aino Ackté had her debut at the Paris Opera in Gounod's "Faust" in 1897 and was immediately signed on for six years. From 1904 to 1906 she was engaged at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In 1907 and 1910 Ackté sang the title role in the local premieres of Richard Strauss's "Salome" in Leipzig and London. The 1910 premiere in London's Covent Garden was an enormous success; Strauss proclaimed Ackté the "one and only Salome" (Pajamo, p. 219). In 1911, Ackté was among the founders of the Kotimainen Ooppera in Helsinki, today's Finnish National Opera, and served as its director in 1938/39. Jean Sibelius dedicated his tone poem "Luonnotar" to Ackté, which she premiered on 10 September 1913 at the Three Choirs Festival in Gloucester, England. In 1914, Ackté permanently returned to Finland, where she gave her farewell performance in 1920. - With collector's note in pencil. Well preserved. R. To a "Cher Maître", possibly Jules Massenet, writing in support of his former professor at the Paris conservatory Auguste de Martini, who had applied for an unspecified position. Alvarez wrote the beautiful letter in the aftermath of an event with the recipient and Auguste de Martini, which he had missed: "J'ai beaucoup regretté n'avoir pu venir vous voir avec Monsieur de Martini hier. J'ai été prévenu trop dard de l'heure de sa visite. Mais ce que je n'ai pu faire de vive voix, hier, je me permets de vous l'écrire, vosu sachant très occupé en ce moment: Monsieur de Martini, vous ne l'ignorez pas, mon cher Maître, a été mon professeur. C'est dans sa direction que j'ai fait mes études vocales et musicales. Je lui dois beaucoup. Or, je serais heureux de le voir placé au poste qu'il sollocote et qui lui revient si bien par sa haute valeur et ses brillantes qualités artisitques. Je prends donc la liberté, mon cher Maître, de recommander à votre bienvaillante attention la candidature de mon professeur, heureux et fier si vous voulez bien faire cas et si elle peut être de quelque utilité à Monsieur de Martini [...]". - Albert Raymond Alverez made his operatic debut as Faust in Ghent in 1887. His Paris debut was again Faust in 1892. In 1894 he created the role of Nicias in Jules Massenet's "Thaïs". - The possible identification of the recipient with Massenet is based on a collector's note in pencil. With a deep tear to the fold slightly affecting the text.

Charming note asking the ticket office of an unspecified opera house to extend two tickets for that evening's performance to the violinist and conductor Romeo Accursi: "Ayez, je vous prie la bonté de remettre au porteur du présent billet, deux places de pit, ou stalles d'enfithéâtre [!] pour ce soir, c'est un ami à M.r Mario et à moi, M.r Accursi - Mille compliments". - Romeo Accursi (1836-1919) met the famous Giulia Grisi early into his career. On 21 April 1858, he played a concert alongside Grisi and Enrico Tamberlik at Salle Herz in Paris. The young Accursi was one of Gioacchino Rossini's favourite performers. - Traces of former mounting. Somewhat stained.

Small 8vo and 12mo. Together 6½ pp. Collection of documents from the last decade of Gustave Nadaud's life, including the original manuscript of his chanson "Albion en Egypte". The fair copy was written in Cairo on 16 January 1883 and is a satirical take on the British occupation of Egypt from 1882, evoking the anti-British trope of "Perfidious Albion": "Egyptiens, combien s'envie | Le sort que vous font les Anglais, | Ils versent le miel de la vie | Dans les mailles de leurs filets. | Dormez sur l'une et l'autre oreille. | Ils sont puissants, ils sont nombreux. | Albion veille: | Egyptiens, soyez heureux!". It was published in Nadaud's "Nouvelles chansons à dire ou à chanter" (Paris, 1891). - In a letter to a M. Dubus, Nadaud announces a trip to Belgium via his native city of Roubaix, for which reason he will be unable to meet the recipient. An undated note presents Nadaud's apologies to a M. The note was probably delivered by a woman whom Nadaud had sent to take care of Lacroix's injury. - In the final letter from 28 October 1892, Nadaud thanks an unnamed friend for sending him his latest book: "Vous étes mille fois aimable de me donner un souvenir à moi [...]". - The manuscript shows some browning and minor stains. To the editor of an "Almanach des artistes", asking him to withdraw her profile from the forthcoming edition, as she was not able to communicate her corrections in time: "J'ai reçu à la campagne votre projet de me faire figurer dans votre almanach des artistes avec votre demande de corriger ce qui ne serait pas actuel. N'étant pas à Paris, j'avais chargé ma tante M.e Isabelle Degail de vous voir et de vous expliquer de vive voix ce que je désirais et de vous prier le nombre d'exemplaires de luxe [...]. Ne vous ayant pas vu, elle me dit ici, qu'elle n'a pas pu vous faire ma communion [?]. Veuillez donc pour cette année ne pas me faire figurer dans cette série [...]". - Louise Théo was on tour in Vienna when Jacques Offenbach discovered her. The master of the operetta engaged Théo at the Théâtre de la Renaissance to create the title roles in "Pomme d'api" and "La jolie parfumeuse", both in 1873. Ce soir, je voudrais la voir. Je viendrai au théâtre et je vous prie de me bien placer dans une loge. Je serai toute seule, car je ne veux pas voir le reste des spectacles et je n'inviterai personne à venir avec moi. - J'irai causer avec vous après [...]". - François-Joseph Talma discovered Louise Rosalie Allan-Despreaux in Brussels at the age of ten and engaged her to play children's parts at the Comédie-Française. In 1831, she joined the Gymnase theatre, where she performed for six years, delivering a series of successes. Following an equally successful ten-year engagement at the French Theatre in St Petersburg, Allan-Despréaux returned to the Comédie-Française in 1847. For her return, she personally selected Alfred de Musset's "Un Caprice", which she had played in St Petersburg. The premiere at the Comédie-Française laid the cornerstone of Musset's lasting fame as a playwright. - With collector's notes in ink and pencil. Traces of creases and a tear to the fold.

In a charming letter to the actor Louis Péricault, Andrée expresses her wish to see his collection of photographic actors' portraits and related documents, as she was a collector herself, also asking for his and his wife's autograph: "Je sais que vous avez une superbe collection de photographies d'acteurs. J'en possède: Je sais que vous avez une superbe collection de photographies d'acteurs. J'en possède également de très curieux. Je désirais vivement avoir un rendez-vous chez vous pour vous demander à voir quelques documents, puis je désire également une signature de madame Honorine Péricault pour un album. Et je vous demanderai également votre autographe. Voilà bien des choses, n'est-ce pas cher monsieur [...]". - The second letter is probably written to an agent or impresario in hopes of more theatre roles. Andrée gives a detailed and humorous account of her engagements after her "representation of motherhood", when she no longer played along André Antoine. The most important role mentioned is in Henri Bernstein's "La Ravale" that had premiered in 1905: "Puis enfin je joue depuis 129 fois dans Rafale, à côté de Mme Lebargy, la rôle de la Marquese de Doullens, une femme du très grand monde. J'aime à varier mes plaisirs puisque même pendant la Rafale j'ai joué en représentations pendant un mois : Madame Nourrison de la Cousine Bette, une Vautrin femelle à moustache le masque de tous les vices et qu'enfin bien encore [...] j'ai joué en m'essayant dans les obsèques classiques le rôle de Mme Pernelle du Tartuffe et où le public m'accueillit le plus favorablement que je le puisse souhaiter". Je vous envoie le reçu, pour lequel vous verrez que vous devez quinze francs cinquante à l'adm.on. J'en ai fait l'avance pour ne pas changer l'époque du renouvellement. Je regrette bien de ne pas m'être trouvé à mon cabinet lorsque vous avez pris la peine de vous y présenter. Dorénavant, lorsque vous devrez venir, ayez le soin de me prévenir par un mot [...]". - Based on the handwriting, the letter can be dated to Antier's later years. The playwright is best known for the creation of the fictional character Robert Macaire in the 1823 melodrama "L'Auberge des Adrets". Due to its failure in the opening night, Frédérick Lemaître, the actor playing Macaire, changed the character of the play to a burlesque for the second performance. Violating all conventions of the genre, "L'Auberge des Adrets" became a comic success. The character of Macaire was soon adapted as an archetypical comic villain in French theatre and film. - Well preserved.

The earliest letter from 3 January 1901, on beautiful art nouveau stationery of the "Théatre Antoine", was to convey New Year's wishes to an unnamed "confrère" who had been present at a banquet that Antoine did not attend: "Nous avons renoncé à ce banquet; c'était beaucoup trop... mais j'ai vu votre aimable adhésion et je tiens à venir vous en remercier en vous présentant mes meilleurs vœux pour l'année qui s'ouvre". - On 18 September 1903, Antoine wrote Léon Marx, director of the Théâtre de Cluny, asking him for a box seat for a representation of Georges Courteline's "Bourbouroche" that same evening: "Je rentre et je me fais une fête d'aller voir notre Boubouroche ce soir. Est-il indiscret de vous demander une baignoire - Si oui, je la paierai et vous seriez bien aimable de me la faire réserver au contrôle". - The final letter, from a late period of Antoine's life, is addressed to Pierre Mortier, publisher of the weekly news magazine "Le Monde Illustré", wherein Antoine published criticisms. The letter suggests that there was an interruption for his "cronique" in the magazin, which might have been in connection with the Spanish Civil War that had started in July 1936. Antoine remarks that much would have been left to say "without taking sides yet" and refers to a Bidon, possibly the Spanish poet Luis Cernuda Bidón, who was "less prudent" and "went to war", closing with a possible reference to the conservative journalist Pierre Brisson: "Ma cronique chez vous m'a manqué ces jours-ci avec ces histoires du français. Il y avait tant de chose à dire sans prendre encore parti car il faut attendre les résultats de cette expérience - Bidon, moins prudent n'a pas hésité à partir en Guerre et j'attends le Brisson". - Well preserved.

J'ai à peine le temps de vous embrasser et de vous dire que mon mari et moi nous conservons bien bon souvenir des instants que nous avons passés près de vous et de M.r Chambéry". - The letter can be dated with respect to Arnould-Plessy's marriage to Auguste Arnould (1803-54), as she mentions her husband. This period was marked by her withdrawal from the Comédie-Française and her triumphant engagement at the Théâtre-Français in St. Petersburg, where she was a favourite of Emperor Nicholas I. In 1855, Arnould-Plessy returned to Paris and was re-admitted to the Comédie-Française as a pensionnaire, seamlessly continuing her career until her retirement from the stage in 1876. - Traces of folds. Les frais de voyage et d'hôtel seront à votre charge en dehors du cachet [...]". - At the time of the letter, Auguez was part of the ensemble of the Paris Opéra. From 1883 to 1884 he sang in Rome and Antwerp before returning to Paris and varying but quite successful engagements. From 1899 onwards, Auguez devoted himself to teaching at the Conservatory and at the École Niedermeyer. - Well preserved.

Nous répéterons lundi, je vous ferai connître l'heure [...]". - While Adrien Dupin Aurèle is largely forgotten, the recipient Louis Péricaud (1835-1909) was one of the great French comic actors of his time. In 1872, Péricaud established himself in Paris after touring in the French province for many years. He was engaged at the Folies-Dramatiques, then at the Théâtre de Cluny, and at the famous Théâtre de l'Ambigu, where Adrien Dupin Aurèle had played before. From 1891, Péricaud was a close collaborator of Coquelin aîné, first at the Porte Saint-Martin and subsequently at the Gaîté-Lyrique. - With two minor tears and bent corners.

[...]". - The lettercard is an invitation to her friend Marguerite Amillet: "Si vous pouvez ma chère migonne venez demain Jeudi à 5½". As Bertet uses the same nickname "Mignonne" on the visiting card to thank her for flowers, it is likely that Marguerite Amillet was the recipient. - In a short letter dated "Lundi 19", Bertet asks a Mr Picard, possibly the dramatist André Picard, for a box seat in the theatre for that night: "Je voudrais bien avoir pour ce soir une loge n'importe laquelle mais comme je ne puis aller au théâtre, voulez vous avoir l'obligéance de la demander pour moi, de la glisser dans l'enveloppe ci jointe et de la faire porter immédiatement". - Minimal browning and stains. Nègre with an order of "six litres of lavender water. 3 litres of very good rose water. 4° a small tinplate pot with good jasmin-pomade. 5° a larger flacon of jasmine essence" and an apology for charging Nègre "always with a thousand annoyances" (transl.). Agar apparently knew this perfume merchant well, as the letter is very personal in nature: "I do not know if I will have the pleasure to see you this winter, my return to the Comédie-Française will most likely keep me from going so far. Voilà, my regrets because I had so much sympathy for your admirable country that it is not without sadness that I have to renounce it". In closing, she invites the recipient to dinner in Paris and sends greetings to his wife. - The second letter probably dates to 1877/78, as it bears a reference to the role of Agrippina in Racine's "Britannicus", which Agar successfully performed at the Comédie-Française upon her return in 1878. The short letter was written to her "Cher et Illustre Maître", possibly the director of the Comédie, with an ultimatum for her return to the stage: "Alas! I cannot see it coming!! and I will not leave you alone so that you torment them, because time passes and we do not rehearse and we will play in the heat and we will not make money and we will be kicked out and and and... I would have committed [?] to the 4 volumes. Our minister is too good [...], finally I want to play, arrange yourself as you wish. This is my ultimatum!! - I am forever devoted and grateful to you. Your Agrippina that dies from not dying every evening". - Agar was ostracized from the stage of the Comédie for over six years because of her participation in a concert that had been organized by the government of the Paris Commune on 6 May 1871. Her return was triumphant; however, when she was not named Sociétaire by the end of 1878, Agar turned her back on the Comédie-Française until 1885. The not entirely clear reference to a minister in the letter might be in connection with the political aspect of the affair. - The letter to Nègre on stationery of a theatre or theatre school "Représentations du répertoire classique - (5e année)". In Folge seiner darin getätigten Äußerungen wurde er zu zwei Jahren Haft in der Festung Wesel verurteilt, konnte allerdings während der Revolution nach Brüssel fliehen, wo er Friedrich Engels und Karl Marx kennenlernte. Together 10 pp. Interesting collection of documents that connect Théodore Botrel to the nationalist politician Paul Déroulède and to the large trial before the French Senate against Déroulède and other anti-Dreyfusard activists following the failed coup of 23 February 1899. - In a letter concerning the organisation of a concert with a recipient referred to as "Mon Père", Botrel remarks that he will "go to the high court as a witness", in "great Breton costume, vest, bragoù bras, and gaiters", in order to represent "loyal Brittany that protests with my voice against the ignominies of the present hour!" (transl.). The letter can thus be dated to the 1899 trial against Paul Déroulède and his co-conspirators. Apparently, Botrel had been called to appear as a witness by the accused journalist and militant royalist Raoul de Fréchencourt who was eventually acquitted. In an undated letter to a prisoner named Raoul, very likely Fréchencourt, Botrel encourages him to call him to the stand, even though Déroulède had asked Botrel not to support him in public: "Do not hesitate to make me appear as a witness in the Déroulède affair. You know that I want to sing for him, that I want to make him even more popular through the Chanson du Peuple [...]. At the same time, Déroulède himself made me promise not to appear by his side, never to recite my verses, to sing my works, especially in Breton costume [...] out of fear that it would compromise him in his popular republican reunions. Nevertheless, Déroulède loves me, he told me so, he much values me (and this is a great honour for me) as a poet!" In this letter, Botrel also mentions the second conviction of Alfred Dreyfus on 9 September 1899, expressing his antisemitic views: "The judgment of Rennes is not the solution to the terrible crisis in which our poor country finds itself, but it is a triumph for the army, a blow to the stateless, to the cosmopolitans, and to the Jews". - The manuscript in the collection is Botrel's "Ballade de L'Ankou", which explores a theme of Breton mythology. Underneath the title, Botrel quotes Anatole Le Braz's "La Légende de la mort en Basse-Bretagne": "The Ankou is, in Brittany, the masculine personification of death". A single correction suggests that the manuscript at hand was the final draft of the poem that was published in "Contes du Lit-Clos" (Paris, 1900, p. 63). - On 27 June 1897, Botrel congratulates an unnamed recipient "on the occasion of the great honour given to our service in the person of its chef [...]". The undated postcard was written to the organizer of a charity concert with Botrel and his wife Léna. The two identical concert programmes with a photograph of Botrel in uniform point to his patriotic concerts in support of the French troops during World War I. - The manuscript is taped, with minor browning, and very slightly creased. Bataille, Nicolas, French comedian and director (1926-2008).

8vo and 4to. Together 3 pp. With an autograph envelope. In French. Two humorous letters to the American professor of French literature and film, Bruce Morrissette. In the letter from 1956, Bataille praises Morrissette's book "La Bataille Rimbaud : l'affaire de la Chasse spirituelle", an investigation of the literary scandal surrounding Nicolas Bataille's and Akakia-Viala's forgery of the prose poem "La Chasse spirituelle" attributed to Rimbaud. The poem was originally mentioned by Paul Verlaine, who claimed to have forgotten its manuscript in Paris when leaving the capital for Brussels to reunite with Rimbaud in 1873. It is disputed among scholars whether "La Chasse spirituelle" ever existed, but it soon gained legendary status as Rimbaud's lost masterpiece. On 19 May 1949, the journalist and forger Pascal Pia published excerpts of the supposed text of "La Chasse spirituelle". André Breton exposed the forgery in July 1949, naming Bataille and Akakia as its probable authors, who admitted to having concocted a pastiche. In this charming letter, Bataille jokingly offers forgeries of "Claudel, Faulkner, or perhaps a faux Dostoyevsky" for Morrissette's future academic work and inquires when he will return to Montmartre: "FORMIDABLE ! Merci, cher Bruce c'est vraiment un très beau livre et quel travail ! Maintenant que voulez-vous ? Un faux Claudel, Faulkner, ou peut-être un faux Dostoievski ? Quand revenez-vous à Montmartre que nous puissions comploter quelque chose d'amusant. En attendant, je vais aller voir Nizet - s'il ne veut pas éditer 'the great Bruce Forgery' [...]". - In the typed letter that was supposedly written from Panama, Bataille announces a trip to Arizona together with Akakia, for research on the Apache tribe. He asks Morrissette for literature on the Apaches and their reservations, as it is easier in Paris and the American libraries to obtain a book "on the fabrication of Lucky Strikes than on the method of scalping Mr Pascal Pia!". This is another referece to the Rimbaud scandal; while Bataille probably did research on Apache customs and crafts for a project, asking Morrissette specifically for books "with many photos or illustrated plates because we also need such documents for decorations and costumes", it is unlikely that he actually went to Arizona.

8vo. Together 3½ pp. on bifolia. Both letters are addressed to a M. Kahn, probably the poet and critic Gustave Kahn. In a brief letter, De Max announces his departure for Monte Carlo together with his stage partner Sarah Bernhardt, with apologies to the recipient: "Je pars avec Sarah pour Monte-Carlo Lundi et nous ne rentrons que le 12. Croyez bien à tout mon vrai regret". - The longer letter concerns a forthcoming poetry recital organized by a M. Mendès, very likely the author and playwright Catull Mendès. De Max asks Kahn to relate to Mendès that he agrees to "La misère humaine" but would prefer to recite Victor Hugo's "Les Djinns" over Lord Byron's "Mazeppa": "Voulez vous avoir la bonté de dire à Mr Mendès que c'est entendu pour 'La misère humaine' mais qu'a la place de 'Mazeppa' je désirais dire 'Les Djinns' trouvant ce dernier poème plus dans mes cordes. À mon grand regret je ne puis rester à la répétition. Envoyez-moi un mot et le poème des 'Djinns'. Merci mon ami grand. Votre vieux dévoué". - While there is no established link between Édouard de Max and either Gustave Kahn or Catull Mendès, the two authors were indeed friends, making the identification plausible. - The letter concerning Mendès minimally creased.

To the son of the linguist and dramatist Louis Poinsinet de Sivry (1733-1804), concerning a complaint by the recipient who had been erroneously struck from the "liste des entrées gratuites" at the Comédie-Française. Lafon relates that he immediately brought Sivry's complaint before the "assemblée du répertoire", which univocally decided to "repair the error that had been commited by the ushers". A letter of complaint by Sivry was "read out and heard with the greatest interest", which, according to Lafon, determined the success of his cause. The interesting letter in full: "Aussitôt votre lettre reçue je me suis rendu à l'assemblée du répertoire pour lui faire part de votre juste réclamation. Toutes les voix s'étaient réunies pour faire réparer promptement l'erreur que les contrôleurs avaient commis et lorsque les semainiers sont arrivés portant de différentes lettres adressées au théâtre français. La votre, Monsieur, a été lue et entendue avec le plus vif intérêt. Si votre cause avait pu être douteuse dans son succès, assurément, Monsieur, vous l'auriez déterminé par la manière dont vous avez rédigé votre requête. La comédie s'est rendue à l'évidence de votre droit, et je l'ai vue enchantée de prouver son estime au fils de Monsieur de Sivry. J'avais réclamé l'honneur d'être immédiatement auprès de vous l'interprète de ses sentiments ; mais elle a pensé qu'elle vous devait elle-même sa réparation, et notre secrétaire doit vous avoir annoncé que vous êtes rétabli sur la liste des entrées". - Pierre Lafon was one of the most popular actors of tragic roles at the Comédie-Française in the years following his debut in 1800, even outshining his rival François-Joseph Talma. Nicknamed "Le beau Lafon", he is also known for a liaison with Pauline Bonaparte. - Traces of folds. Minimally stained. With collector's notes in pencil and a minor tear due to breaking the seal.

Davon habe ich in diesen Tagen eine Menge Beweise erhalten. Es ist nur eine Stimme, daß, solange Sie und Häpe keine finanziellen Opfer bringen (und das ist doch noch nicht der Fall), man die Flinte nicht ins Korn werfen darf. Die Gegenparthei jubelt darüber, und fängt, wenn der Wächter fortläuft, das alte Leben wieder an [...]". - "Die Fackel. Arbario di Gattinara, Luigi Giuseppe, Marquese di Breme, Italian diplomat and politician (1754-1828).

To the author of an unidentified treatise on military education entitled "Trésor fécond de principes, de vues, de sentimens incontestables", praising it in the highest terms and commenting on the text: "Je Vous restitue Monsieur, avec regrét, n'ayant put m'en pouvoir ici, et reconnaissance Votre incomparable Ouvrage [...], ou tout ce qui était à dire est exposé avec une sagacité, une propriété de termes, une facilité qui le met à la portée d'un chacun et électrise en même tems la raison et le cœur de quiconque le lit [...]". - Luigi Giuseppe Arbario di Gattinara originally envisaged an army career, having reached the rank of a captain of the infantry when he was convinced by the Sardinian minister of external affairs to accept a diplomatic mission to Naples in 1782. In 1786 he was named ambassador to the Imperial court in Vienna, where he served until 1794. After his return to Turin, the Marquess served as councillor to the Sardinian King and took public office in the Napoleonic Italian Republic in 1802. He assisted in the coronation of Napoleon as King of Italy in 1805, whose state council he joined. In 1809 Napoleon named Arbario di Gattinara senator of the Kingdom of Italy. During the restoration, the Marquess withdrew to private life, dedicating his time to political and economical studies. - On stationery with engraved letterhead "Le Senteur Comte de Breme, Grand Dignitaire de l'Ordre de la Couronne de Fer". With recipient's or collector's note in ink. Well preserved.
