‎"MORRIS, WILLIAM.‎

‎Orig. handwritten and signed manuscript for ""Notes on Matters Parliamentary."" 4 pp. 4to. - [ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT]‎

‎N.d. Between 1882 (watermark-date in the paper) and 1886 (year of printing). This is an essay concerning parliamentary matters: ""Big as the passing days are with hopes of events/ to come, hard as times are now, and/ troublous as the outlook is, there has seldom passed/ a month in which there is so little/ to say about the proceedings of that ""representative""/ body called Parliament which according to the views/ of some worthy persons is the only instrument/ by means of which the construction of Society/ can be carried out..."" It is especially related to Chamberlin: ""There/ is Mr. Chamberlin's circular to the Boards of Guardians,/ which is as complete an exemplification of/ the helplessness of our present ggovernmental system/ as could be..."" and to Ireland: ""For after all the question England really is/ Shall Ireland separate with civil war or without it/ And for Ireland: ""Shall we be allowed to deal with the Land as we think good?"" Due to many handwritten corrections, there are many variations from the printed version.‎

‎Printed in April 1886 in ""The Organ of the Social Democracy."" Volume 2, Number 15.‎

‎IOVIUS, PAULUS - PAOLO GIOVIO - JOVIO.‎

‎De Romanis Piscibus libellus ad Ludouicum Borbonium Cardinalem amplissimum. - [GIOVIO'S FIRST WORK]‎

‎Basiliae (Basel), Froben, August 1531. Small 8vo. Very nice later (ab. 1700) full brown morocco, probably Italian, with gilt borders to boards, back richly gilt. Old library-label to lower back, scratch to front-board, white chalk-like staining to back-board. Internally a bit of brownspotting, but overall good condition. Contemporary marginal notes to three pp. Woodcut printer's device to t-p. and last leaf, a few woodcut initials. 144, (6) pp., 1 f. w. printer's device. With the ex-libris of Jeffrey Norton.‎

‎Very rare Froben-edition of the first work by the Renaissance-historian Paolo Giovio. All early editions of this work are very rare.Giovio was a gifted philosopher, medic and historian. He was born in 1483 in Come (Lombard) and was as controversial a person as he was an author. He died in 1552 in Florence, and this particular edition is thus printed in his lifetime. Three other editions appeared in his lifetime, all printed in Rome, in 1524, 1527, 1528, but the 1531-edition is the only one by as prominent a printer as Froben.Giovio was very strategic and succeeded in connecting himself with the Medici-family, especially Giulio Medici, who was later elected Pope (Clement VIII) when he became Pope, Giovio was assigned chambers in the Vatican and in 1528 he was announced Bishop of Nocera. Giovio wrote historical and biographical works and essays these works are said not to be taken as authorities, but in their entirety and with proper reservation they do have real value, especially because he gives a rich and lively picture of Italy in his own time. He gives indispensable accounts of the manners and lives of the people of Renaissance Italy. As a writer and clergy he played quite a big role in Renaissance Italy. This his first work is a rarity and plays a special part in his body of writing, as it is neither historical nor biographical. It deals with the types of fish that Romans eat and tells how to prepare them, it is thus of great importance to anyone interested in the lives and customs of the time, and it is sometimes counted among the earliest of cook books. It also provides names of the fish and details of where they can be found, and where the best of each species is most easily found, making it of real value to the ichthyologist" this work is also said to contain the first reference in history to American fish. The work was translated into Italian in 1560, eight years after the death of Giovio. Not in Simon. BMC (NH) only mentions the 1561 edition and the 1560 translation. Wood p. 359: ""a very early treatise on Roman ichthyology"" (""the rare"" 1524 first edition).‎

‎"HAMSUN, MARIE.‎

(1p. 4to. Written on paper w. letterhead from the publisher. The letter is a request from Dr. Knapp on behalf of a school-class in Louise, Germany, who wish for an autograph by Knut Hamsun on a photograph. Following the ab. 15 machine-written lines is a four lines handwritten notice in the hand of Dr. Knapp, stating that a photograph of Knut Hamsun for him to sign has not been sent with the letter after all, but a large poster.‎

‎Dated ""20.8.43"". 2 pages 8vo. Written on blue paper w. the letterhead ""Wedellsborg/ Ejby."" The letter is a polite refusal to an invitation to give a lecture. It translates as thus: ""I am very sorry/ that that you have not/ received an answer to your letter/ sooner. ‎The legendary Danish writer, Karen Blixen-Finecke (pseudonym: Isak Dinesen) (1885-1962), was a Danish baroness, who married her cousin, the Swedish Baron Bror Blixen-Finecke, in 1914. They soon moved to Africa, where they ran a coffee-farm near Nairobi, and the happiest years of Blixen's life were spent here (she used to say that ""Africa made me""). The farm in the Ngong Hills is the centre of her world famous novel, ""Out of Africa"". She divorced her husband, who was cheating on her and gave her syphilis, in 1922, and in 1932 she moved back to Denmark after the farm had gone bankrupt and her lover, Denys Finch-Hatton, had died in a plane-crash. She spent the remaining 30 years of her life in Denmark, and died a legendary writer. She greatly influenced writers and cultural personas of the generations to come, and many authors recognize the direct impact she has had on their writings. Several of her novels have been filmatized, most famously ""out of Africa"" with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, she was nominated for the Nobel Prize twice, she was elected honorary member of ""The American Academy of Arts and Letters"" (1957), and her portrait is printed on the Danish 50 kr. notes. She is the absolutely most famous of all modern Danish writers, and the only one of international fame.‎

‎"SARTRE, JEAN-PAUL.‎

‎La mort dans l'âme, roman. Les chemins de la liberté III. + manuscript-fragment for the novel. - [ONE OF THREE COPIES OUT OF COMMERCE & FRAGMENT OF THE ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT]‎

‎(Paris), Gallimard, (1949). Uncut and unopened in the orig. printed wrappers, excellent copy + original handwritten manuscript-leaf in ink, 2pp., 4to, for the pages 134-138 in the first edition, containing numerous corrections and emendations as well as a burnt hole from one of Sartre's cigarettes. The paper is watermarked ""Herakles"". Both items are placed in a very beautiful custom-made red full-morocco box, internally broadened to fit both items, w. single gilt line-borders to boards and back, beatifully gilt titles on back. The manuscript-fragment is placed in a red morocco-backed plastic-folder.‎

‎First edition of this splendid and important novel, without doubt the best of the novel-cycle, one of three copies out of commerce printed on ""vergé antique blanc"", numbered ""C"". The manuscript-fragment greatly varies from the printed leaves, and is probably part of Sartre's very first notes to the manuscript, which were written several years before the publication of the work. The work was announced already in 1945 under the title ""La Dernière Chance"", and was supposed to appear in ""Les Temps modernes"" in November 1947, but because the work grew to great, Sartre let it become part three of the novel-cycle ""Les chemins de la liberté"", instead of setting free the characters in the already printed novels (I and II) and casting them as main characters in new independent novels. This work represents one of Sartre's best literary works, and in it he presents us with the existentialist moral sentiments that were philosophically outlined in his main philosophical work, L'être et le néant, but this time in literary form.""Le volume - qui est sans doute le meilleur de la série - fut écrit en 1947-1948 en même temps, notons-le que l'ébauche de la morale de l'existentialisme promise à la fin de L'ÊTRE ET LE NÉANT. (Contat & Rybalka, p. 207).The first edition of the work appeared in 2163 copies , out of which 8 were on ""vergé antique blanc"", numbered I-V and A-C (the last three being ""hors commerce""), 105 were on ""vélin pur fil Lafuma Navarre"", numbered VI-CV and D-H (the last five being ""hors commerce""), and 2.050 on ""alfa Navarre"", numbered 1-2050 (the last 50 being ""hors commerce""). First edition of Oersted's main work in natural philosophy. Presentation-copy with the inscription ""Herr Professor og Dr i Theologien/ Scharling/ venskabeligst/ fra/ Forfatteren."" (Mr. Professor and Doctor of Theology/ Scharling/ with the kindest regards/ The Author""). Underneath the presentation-inscription a handwritten quotation from a letter from Sophie Oersted (born Oehlenschläger) (from Adam Oehlenschläger's Memoires) in cont. hand (probably that of Scharling). The presentation-inscription is for professor Carl Emil Scharling (1803-77), theologist, who was the brother of Oersted's daughter's (Karen) husband.Oersted is universally known for his discovery of Electro-Magnetism in 1820. Afterwards he went on to write a number of important philosophical works on natural philosophy and empiricism, of which ""Aanden i Naturen"" he himself considered his main work. The work is found printed on 2 sorts of paper, common- and vellum-paper. This copy is on vellum-paper. Both H.C. Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard admit to having been influenced by the writings of Oersted. ""He was an enthusiastic follower of the ""Naturphilosophie"" school in Germany, whose main object was the unification of physical forces, thus producing a monistic theory of the universe. It was to further this purpose that Oersted sought in actual phenomena the electro-magnetic identity of which he had already convinced himself on metaphysical grounds"" (Percy H. Muir in Printing and The Mind of Man).‎

‎ADORNO, THEODOR W.‎

‎Zur Metakritik der Erkenntnistheorie. Studien über Husserl und die Phänomenologischen Antinomien. - [FIGHTING EPISTEMOLOGY - PRESENTATION-COPY]‎

‎Stuttgart, (1956). 8vo. Orig. fulll brown cloth w. gilt lettering to spine and front board" original red dust-jacket w. a bit of sunning to spine, otherwise near perfect condition. A very nice, clean, and fresh copy. 251, (1) pp.‎

‎First edition, presentation-copy, of one of Adorno's most interesting and important works. With a five lines long presentation-inscription signed ""Th. W. Adorno"", dated ""Frankfurt, 16. November 1956.""Most of text was written between 1934 and 1937, when Adorno was not allowed to teach in Frankfurt, but parts of the book were written shortly before the first printing of the book, in 1956. The important and influential German philosopher and sociologist, Theodor Ludwig Wiesengrund Adorno (1903 - 1969), was a leading member of the Frankfurt School, together with e.g. Horkheimer, Benjamin, and Habermas. He taught philosophy at the university of Frankfurt, but as a Jew, his teaching position was taken from him in 1933. He went to Oxford to teach, and in 1938 he emigrated to America, where he was the leader of several sociological projects in both New York and Los Angeles. Together with Horkheimer he wrote the theoretical manifest of the Frankfurt School, the ""Dialektik der Aufklärung"". I 1949 he returned to Frankfurt, where he became professor of philosophy and sociology. ""Theodor W. Adorno was one of the most important philosophers and social critics in Germany after World War II. Although less well known among anglophone philosophers than his contemporary Hans-Georg Gadamer, Adorno had even greater influence on scholars and intellectuals in postwar Germany. In the 1960s he was the most prominent challenger to both Sir Karl Popper's philosophy of science and Martin Heidegger's philosophy of existence. Jürgen Habermas, Germany's foremost social philosopher after 1970, was Adorno's student and assistant. The scope of Adorno's influence stems from the interdisciplinary character of his research and of the Frankfurt School to which he belonged. It also stems from the thoroughness with which he examined Western philosophical traditions, especially from Kant onward, and the radicalness to his critique of contemporary Western society. He was a seminal social philosopher and a leading member of the first generation of Critical Theory."" (SEP).In this anti-epistemological work, Adorno deals with the more general question of the possibility of truth and of epistemology in principle (""die Frage nach Möglichkeit und Wahrheit von Erkenntnistheorie prinzipiell"", Vorrede, p. 9), although the outer structure of the work is that of the philosophy of Husserl. Adorno comes to the conclusion that all epistemology is misguided, because it is based on some sort of ""prima philosophia"", an original or first principle, which cannot in reality be an absolutely first, because it is a concept, which is mediated. Adorno's work became hugely influential throughout philosophical and sociological circles, and his ""Zur Metakritik der Erkenntnistheorie"" (translated as ""Against Epistemology"") counts as one of his most important works. ""It inspired Habermas and Marcuse and continues to influence other eminent thinkers in philosophy and the social sciences today."" (From the English language translation by Willis Domingo).‎
