Although her health is failing Colette wishes to continue their epistolary exchanges: ""Ne m'interdis pas le plaisir de te répondre grand Claude ! Je vis alitée arthrite jambes Je suis sortie - une fois en voiture - une fois en 80 jours. Evidemment je préfèrerais ne pas souffrir ou souffrir moins."" ""Don't forbid me the pleasure of responding to you dear Claude! I live bedridden arthritis legs I went out - once by car - once in 80 days. Obviously I would prefer not to suffer or to suffer less."" and still attempts to show herself optimistic and pragmatic: ""Mais ma fenêtre est tournée vers le sud sur le Jardin sur le soleil ai-je le droit de me plaindre Et puis j'ai épousé un saint. ‎1883-1916. Autograph hunting among British high society A fine assemblage of around 250 signatures of the luminaries of the Victorian and Edwardian age including a signed portrait of Ernest Shackleton the signatures of Prime Ministers Arthur Balfour and H. H. Asquith and the writers George Trevelyan John Morley and George Augustus Sala. Most of the signatures are clipped and mounted alongside their letterhead. The rest are tipped-in letters many of which are made out to Samuel Holliday 1846-1912 who worked as a superintendent for the North Eastern Railway for 48 years and consequently encountered many notable travellers - some are letters of thanks for his service. His obituary noted "he was one of the best known figures in railway circles at York and Newcastle and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him either in his official or private capacity" North Mail Newcastle Daily Chronicle 20 August 1912. Other letters are addressed to different people and acquired elsewhere. Where dated the letters range from 1883 to 1916. Also included are loose signed photographic portraits of William Booth Liza Lehmann and Harry Lauder and a signed sketch of Harry Furniss. Provenance: Anon. Sale: Sotheby Parke Bernet & Co. London May 9 1983 Lot 356; sold to Steve Forbes chairman of Forbes Magazine and presidential candidate in the 1996 and 2000 US elections; his book label is loosely inserted. Contemporary half morocco album 283 x 229 mm brown cloth sides silk moiré endpapers cloth inner hinge supports. Together with five loose portraits of which four signed see note. Chateaubriand writes to the husband of his goddaughter Atala Stamaty-Varcollier the first to bear the name of the heroine of his famous novel that propelled him onto the literary scene in 1801. Head of the Fine Arts Division of the Seine Prefecture Michel-Augustin Varcollier acted as Chateaubriand's intermediary in the development of the grounds of l'Infirmerie Marie-Thérèse his wife Céleste's grand project to house elderly priests and nobles widowed by the French Revolution. Here Monsieur is a bill from Madame de Chateaubriand to M. de Chabrol inviting him to attend Marie-Thérèse's council meeting which will take place next Wednesday the 21st at 2 a.m."". M. de Chabrol was kind enough to suggest Friday of this week but it has been impossible to gather MM. the Counselors for that day. Kindly explain this to Monsieur de Chabrol. . Fine. s. d. 1948 21 x 27 cm quatre feuillets Signed autograph manuscript entitled ""A Compiègne et au Palais Bourbon"" by Léon Blum 3 and a half pages in blue ink on the verso of four sheets with letterhead from the newspaper Le Populaire Central Organ of the Socialist Party S.F.I.O. Numerous passages crossed out and rewritten in black ink. Horizontal fold mark on each sheet notes from a previous bibliographer in pencil at the head of the first sheet. The article appeared in the daily newspaper Le Populaire on March 9 1948. Fine and virulent diatribe by Léon Blum following General De Gaulle's Compiègne speech denouncing his maneuvers toward a ""strong State."" He paints a hopeful picture of German reconciliation European construction as well as the Marshall Plan soon to be ratified - of which he had been the great negotiator. On March 7 1948 the general who had just founded the Rally of the French People was invited by the new mayor Jean Legendre who had rallied to the RPF. At a pivotal moment of international tensions before several tens of thousands of people gathered at the château square De Gaulle called on the French to unite to refound the Fourth Republic and free countries to unite against communism following the ""Prague coup."" Remaining excluded from power he then began his crossing of the desert until his return in 1958 thanks to the Algerian crisis which brought down the weak Fourth Republic. Having established the foundations of this same Republic Blum disapproves in these pages of De Gaulle's challenge to parliamentary institutions - even as his own Gaullists deputies obstruct debates in the assembly. He opposes the general's catastrophist discourse with an optimistic vision of European and international reconstruction convinced of the great resilience of the French nation and confident in its institutions. « Chose curieuse c'est la presse gaulliste qui attendait le discours de Compiègne avec la curiosité et l'impatience la plus marquées. . Et là on voyait la coalition du parti gaulliste avec ces mêmes « séparatistes » que le discours de Compiègne dénonçait comme des traîtres s'étaler avec une impudence plus scandaleuse de jamais . Certes la situation intérieure est sérieuse et la situation internationale ne l'est pas moins. Mais le redoutable hiver s'achève le ravitaillement s'améliore. La tendance s'améliore vers la baisse des produits alimentaires s'accentue et s'accentuera dès que le courant parti des Etats-Unis aura atteint l'Europe. Usual trace of horizontal fold. ""My darling love Do you think of me Won't you save your evening for me tomorrow . we'll go to the show in any case come as an Arlaisienne sic. I'll write to you tomorrow to tell you again that I love you. My daughter could not have been more touched by your outburst towards her. She adores you - or rather we adore you. Love me."" Nothing is known of this affair with Marie Richon except through a few of Dumas' very impassioned letters. She was obviously sensitive to belles-lettres ""Make me some good verses for my return"" he asked her in antoher letter. Whether she was an actress a woman of the world or a scholar the mystery surrounding this character who inspired a torrid correspondence remains unsolved. In particular he would meet his mysterious conquest at his home on Boulevard Haussmann where he had settled from 1865 onwards. One of Dumas's sentences tells us that she even met Dumas's daughter who lived with her father and endured visits from his lovers "" My daughter could not have been more touched by your outburst towards her. She adores you - or rather we adore you "". We can place this missive probably in the course of 1866 during the preparations for the theatrical adaptation of his novel 'Gabriel Lambert' - he mentions in another letter a reading of the play at the Ambigu-Comique where it premiered on March 16 1866. The last years of Dumas' life did not quench his immeasurable love of women; during this adventurous period he also shared his nights with the feminist and gerontophile Olympe Audouard as well as the famous Adah Isaacs Menken whose portraits at the writer's side were leaked by their indiscreet photographer. Aesthetic and overflowing declaration of love from the great writer addressed to a mysterious lover still unknown to biographers. unknown‎

Four pages written in black on a bifolium with ""Island Mill"" watermark and framed in black. Usual traces of folds. Published in Kolb VIII no. 32 p. 74-75. Superb letter extolling the merits of literary pastiche by one of the greatest writers of the genre: Marcel Proust. The writing of this letter may coincide with the publication of Proust's series of pastiches on the Lemoine Affair a scam set up by a French engineer of that name who claimed to be able to make genuine diamonds. The articles were printed on the front page of the literary supplement of 'Le Figaro' between 1908 and 1909 or date from its publication in volume under the title 'Pastiches et mélanges' in 1919. The autograph letter is presented in a midnight blue half morocco chemise with marbled paper boards beige suede lined pastedowns and a slipcase edged with the same morocco. Proust warmly thanks his correspondent Maurice de Fleury whom he describes as a ""scholar and writer"" for his favorable reception of his ""little pastiches"": ""Your double merit should make you doubly severe: and you excuse pastiche that inferior genre!"" Votre double mérite devrait vous rendre doublement sévère : et vous excusez le pastiche ce genre inférieur ! acknowledging with irony the still precarious place of this unusual genre although popular during Proust's lifetime. ‎Charenton 1801. Fine. Charenton 1801 15 x 22.80 cm un feuillet composé deux papiers encollés Original autograph letter by the Marquis de Sade consists of 27 lines of relatively tight handwriting. Most likely written to his wife as evidenced by the letter's origin from Sade's family. The letter is physically composed of two glued pieces of paper. On the verso the Marquis wrote 19 lines and scrupulously crossed them out - a few words and letters are still quite visible. Cited in Maurice Lever's biography 'Donatien Alphonse François marquis de Sade' Paris Fayard 1991 p. 631. On March 7 1801 Armand de Sade the Marquis's son received a letter from the Minister of Police Joseph Fouché notifying him that his father had been arrested yesterday and that handwritten pages from the novel 'La nouvelle Justine' Justine or the Misfortunes of Virtue had been found on his person: “Nevertheless sensitive to your request for leniency and concerned to preserve the honor of your name I have decided to have your father transferred to the Charenton nursing home.”. It should be noted that for Fouché Charenton an insane asylum was nothing more than a nursing home a prison. It should not be forgotten that a large proportion of the population of these asylums did not fit into the social and moral field and psychiatry has long had no other aim than to normalize to make them fit for social life. Contrary to what has been said Sade fits in perfectly. However as soon as he entered Charenton Sade's attitude led to his expulsion to Bicêtre the Bastille of scoundrels but his family succeeded in getting him back into the Charenton asylum. Charenton was not only the Marquis de Sade's last incarceration but also the last place he lived in where he died in 1814. The 19 lines scrupulously crossed out on the back of the leaf reveal a few words or letters; in this respect we can conjecture that it's a coded message which Sade was quite fond of for if censorship had been behind these erasures absolutely everything would have been yet the message clearly shows that almost everything has been conscientiously crossed out apart from a few words or letters. We can still make out a few of them: 'Nécessaire' 'à tous' 'ger' 'ue' 'quel' 'je trouve' 'de'. As for the letter itself it is remarkable for the homogeneity of its message. It is a lengthy complaint describing the physical ailments Sade has suffered. It is an account of the sum total of the symptoms that overwhelm the writer. In a hyperbolic style using among other figures of speech adverbs of intensity si tel très. Sade methodically spells out the violent pains his body is suffering with the whole of this violence constituting a system a structure in which all the parts are linked. In the writer's correspondence it can be said that each time he found himself incarcerated his letters mention uncontrollable physical attacks although we know of no other letter so uniform and systematic.The pain originates in the pit of the stomach radiating out to the periphery: head eyes legs all converging on vertigo loss of balance. .because that's what it's all about: Sade isn't suffering from any illness he's besieged by anguish whose ultimate meaning is vertigo the wavering of a reality from which his freedom to live as he pleases his freedom of movement and his name have been taken away. The loss of these fundamental elements of his existence sends Sade in turmoil.
